My granddad always used to say that we were living in interesting times. That was 27 years ago and I wonder what he would have thought about the times that we are living in today. Gramps was an old school kinda guy, with old school values, and was probably one of the last of the generation of old fashioned “gentlemen”. He had many quirks, but those that I remember best were that he firmly believed in a family sitting around the table at dinner time, that you should always wear a shirt to the table (I learnt that the hard way) and that Christmas time wasn’t about the presents, but about the chance to connect as a family.

Gramps was a smart guy. The old school values that he lived by are more needed by families today than ever before — and I find that they’ve become harder to instil into our lives today, even though they are so simple.

It’s interesting to see that in the world that we live in, as daunting to us as the one that Gramps lived in was to him, with a mountain of complexity and tons of challenges, there is a strong and growing move back to compassionate, connected communities who support each other more and more each day. When I run through this year’s editions of our magazine, I see dozens of stories about the great achievements, astonishing people and outstanding places that all make up the community of Umhlanga. There are brave people doing great things in the community and this time of year allows us to celebrate them both as part of our community and our larger family. Our Umhlanga community (for which read “world”) is a great place and its people are doing extraordinary things!

I hope that many of you who are reading our magazine are able to do so whilst being surrounded by those that are most important to you. I pray you have finished your year strong, or stronger, for the lessons it has served up to you and that you are able share a meal, or many, with your family around a table laughing, smiling and sharing stories. I think that Gramps was right about this time of year and I hope that you get to experience the joy of connecting, despite the stress of shopping for presents.

We are glad to have been a part of your journey this year as you made us a part of your home by bringing “your” magazine into it and we look forward to doing it again during the year ahead.

Until we meet again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!Justin Scott and the FabMags team

These days, it is almost mandatory to see to it that your smartphone or tablet has a screen protector to ensure that your gadget reaches its guaranteed maximum lifespan.

A bunch of local guys have tapped into this and started producing their own range of screen protectors with a uniquely South African name, Smaak.

The awesome thing about the Smaak range of screen protectors is that for every screen protector sold, R5 will be donated to the “Stop Rhino Poaching” fund. The Smaak team have already raised R100,000 towards this fantastic initiative.

Eat brunch: Breakfast IS Brunch, so WIMPY is an all time favourite, otherwise Tasha’s at Gateway or Remo’s in the Village.

Best cup of coffee: VIDA Cappucino @ SMG Rocks, they make it just the way I like it!

Relax when the weathers good: We are fortunate to have some great beaches in Umhlanga so if the sun is shining any beach will do!

Work out: Does Ushaka with my son count? 15 000 steps, 5km run, 5km swim.

Fav activity to do on the weekend: Apart from working? The usual South African pastime, braai around the pool, or Ushaka with my son! Fav Shopping centre: Has to be Gateway,

everything I need under one roof, and valet parking for the win!

Grab drinks with the

guys: Usually The

George after work, or

for the few BIG GAMES

of the weekend. It’s an

awesome little pub.

With a passion for life and all things fun, our man about town and local socialite tells us about what he likes to do in the town he calls home. Shane is a man with deep family roots, a young man who lives life to the full... who works extremely hard and is passionate about sales ... but work hard, play harder is his motto. Umhlanga is now Shane’s playground and this is his town.

JAMES Pierpont's 1857 song Jingle Bells was first called One Horse Open Sleigh and was written for Thanksgiving.

Come Christmastime every year the same traditional ideas are drummed into our skulls, but I have discovered that there is actually a lot about Christmas that most of us don’t know — some of us even seem to have forgotten that the birth of Jesus is actually why we celebrate Christmas!

ChristmasThe Xmas rebuttal Ever have someone reprimand you for saying or writing the word “Xmas” instead of Christmas? Their so-called reason for this is that by doing so you are removing “Christ” and that therefore you are a heathen. False! For hundreds of years “X” represented “Christ” in religious writings. “X" is the Greek letter “chi”, the first letter of the Greek Chritos or Christ. So in reality Christmas and Xmas stand for exactly the same thing.

25 December Did you know that the Bible never actually says when Jesus was born? It was only in the 4th century that the Catholic Church decided to recognize Jesus’ birth with the Feast of the Nativity on December 25.

How did the Christmas elves come into it all?OK, so we know where Santa Clause is derived from — for those of you that don’t, it was St Nicholas, a fourth century pastor who was very generous — but have you ever wondered where the idea of Christmas elves (weird-eared small people) sprang from? Could it be St Nick’s cover-up for a child sweat factory? Happily not! In 1850, Louisa May Alcott completed (but never published) a book entitled Christmas Elves. It is believed that it is from this that the idea of elves working for Santa started circulating. In 1873 elves appeared on the cover of Godey’s Lady’s Book and became a mainstream idea.

Why do we hang funny thingamajigs on our Christmas trees?Until the early 1800s, people put nuts and fruit on their trees to signify that the winter season would not last forever. But, one year a sprightly German glassblower decided to blow glass bulbs and hang them on his tree. All of his friends and family thought they were the best thing since sliced-bread (if they had had sliced bread, of course) and started putting in their orders. And, as with every new invention, copycats were soon selling them everywhere and using them became a tradition around the world. Sadly, what had been a quality glass ornament is often now only colourful cardboard.

MANY parts of the Christmas tree can actually be eaten, with the needles being a good source of Vitamin C.

LONDON sweet-maker, Tom Smith, created the first Christmas crackers in 1847.

SANTA has different names around the world — Kriss Kringle in Germany, Le Befana in Italy, Pere Noël in France and Deushka Moroz (Grandfather Frost) in Russia.

SANTA Claus comes from a Dutch folk tale about Saint Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, who gave gifts on December 6.

from our usual

interview with a local

businessperson, this

month we profile and

pay tribute to three

people in Umhlanga

who, we believe, have

stood out and made a

difference in the past

year. All three of our

profiled stars exude

their own sort of magic

and energy, which at

this time of the year is

synonymous with the

Christmas spirit and

the joys of the festive

season.

What does your daily job entail? My position entails innovating and growing the media company that is East Coast Radio, together with the highly-talented ECR team.

What would you say is your greatest achievement this year?It has been a big year on all fronts, both personally and professionally — running the Comrades and staging some of Durban’s biggest events, including the Big Walk, which attracted 35 000 people. The station also took a big leap into the TV arena — watch this space! What are you passionate about? I am passionate about innovation in business and changing the rules of the game whilst also making a difference in the lives of the less-fortunate. I am an endurance athlete, so I am also passionate about health and fitness.

Best advice you’ve ever been given?“If you are not scared a lot of the time, you are not working hard enough.” This came from a talk by Robin Sharma. Innovating, experimenting and transforming take us out of our comfort zones, where fear of failure is ever-present. But that’s how we grow and discover new ways of doing things.

What does your community mean to you and in what way do you give back to it?I think community gives one a sense of belonging. I give back through my work at East Coast Radio, from major initiatives like Toy Story to weekly programmes like The Big Favour. I am a public speaker and I aim at empowering women in the workplace.

What inspires you?I’m inspired by people who challenge themselves beyond their perceived capacity.

How do you unwind in this amazing place? A run on the promenade or sundowners with friends at the Oyster Box!

Your vision needs to be stronger than your memory to succeed in all areasProf Nick Binedell

Mike LambertcAreer: CEO OF THE THREE CiTiES GROUP

What does your daily job entail?Strategic and operational management of both our hotel and education divisions. Every day is varied and different, challenging all aspects of one’s cognitive abilities.

What would you say is your greatest achievement this year?Achieving our best financial year performance since 2007.

What are you passionate about? Developing and adding value to people’s lives — those I work with and my family — and, of course, travel, food and fly-fishing!

Best advice you’ve ever been given?Find what makes your heart sing and stick to it. Life is not a dress rehearsal — you are always on stage.

What does your community mean to you and in what way do you give back to it?To me, there is no better community than that in Umhlanga. It is small enough for everyone to know your name, but big enough to be influential within its local context. It also has a number of local influencers who contribute to those less privileged than ourselves on a daily basis and do not claim kudos for their efforts. I personally applaud these people. I contribute by sitting as Captain of Industry for the Reach for a Dream Foundation for KZN. I find it emotionally moving to see the innocent smiles of delight of these children as they have the chance to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime dream — literally.

What inspires you?Sunrise on the promenade at Umhlanga and happy, laughing, healthy children playing on the beach.

How do you unwind in this amazing place?I run on the promenade, swim in the ocean, dine in the Village (what a cool place!) and spend as much time with my wife and three wonderful children as I can.

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fearNelson Mandela (This hangs in my office.)

Renzo ScribantecAreer: reSTAurAnTeur, reMo’S frATellI

What does your daily job entail? The day starts early at one of the stores. I am there before anyone else to ensure that any problems are resolved before the doors open. After a thorough walk-through of the store and meeting with the team, I then either start my day with a breakfast meeting or head to the office. Time management is critical, as my focus needs to shift day by day, from the running of the stores to our new builds and distribution business. This can involve several meetings with “expert” partners, as well as flights and trips not only in South Africa but also abroad.

What would you say is your greatest achievement this year? The growth and personal development of my staff — for example, key members who have risen from being a waiter to a very successful and competent store manager. I feel a huge sense of achievement when I see one of the team flourish when given the opportunity to grow. For me personally, it’s securing new brands that we will launch into the South African market as part of our newly-established distribution business.

What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about Remo’s and its core values — the people I work with, the customers we have become friends with and the history that we are creating.

Best advice you’ve ever been given? To be consistent and loyal to your core values.

What does your community mean to you and in what way do you give back to it?This means two things for me. Firstly, there are the loyal and supportive customers that make up the Remo’s community. I believe that this is a mutually beneficial relationship as they are honest with us and tell us when we get it right or wrong and, in return, we listen and show commitment to remaining consistent in all we do. Secondly, there is the community in the broader sense of the word, where we can get involved by sponsoring charity events or our Movember campaign. We are aware that enough is never enough, so we keep on trying to drive initiatives and support our community where we can.

What inspires you?The love of food and wine is part of my make-up. The Italian way of life will always inspire me and is something I truly believe in — La Dolce Vita, as they say. Also, the desire for good, healthy, tasty food, the love of a good woman, children who keep it real, wine that is the very best, coupled with an espresso and a grappa — the perfect combination.

How do you unwind in this amazing place? At this moment in my life, it’s not so easy to unwind. However, a day off at home with family and Sunday lunch certainly aids the relaxation process.

You don’t build a business, you build people. And then the people build the business

Tell us a little bit about yourself?I was born and bred in Durban and, although I travel the world in the course of my career, my home base for now is still here. I’m married to an amazing woman and we have two wonderful boys, Ethan (13) and Benjamin (10).

I’m honoured to have been recognised by Nikon as one of the world’s most influential photographers and I have been a Nikon Ambassador for the past five years. My other sponsors include Lowepro, Manfrotto, Adobe, Elinchrom and Lexar.

What or who got you started in photography and did you study? I’ve been at this profession for 21 years, starting my career in 1992 while I was fulfilling my national service

obligations in the police’s riot unit. A photographic unit was formed to document political changes, politically motivated crimes and township violence and I was first in line to join. With no photographic experience prior to that, I seized the opportunity and learnt as fast as I could on my own and, through trial and error, quickly mastered the technical knowledge required. I soon found myself in the midst of dramatic newsworthy events and I photographed images that found a ready market — in newspapers and other media — and were published all over the world.

What gives you ideas or inspires you to create your imagery?I’m very inspired by high fashion and I find most of my inspiration in the pages of high-end magazines such as Vogue,

Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair. I keep up with these photographic trends and poses and translate them into my own photographs.

Why did you choose to specialise in this photographic genre?I originally became a wedding photographer because it was one of the easiest markets to get into at a time when I had virtually no experience with paying clients.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?I’ve always been faithful to Nikon as a brand and have had the whole gamut of their cameras. I am shooting with the Nikon D4, which is an unbelievable camera — its capabilities are so excellent that sometimes it feels as if I’m cheating!

How important is Photoshop in your final images?I use Photoshop to sparingly enhance the image, not to manipulate it.

Who is your idol in the industry? The great master and fashion photographer, Patrick Demarchelier, is my idol. I am a great admirer of his lighting, which is generally quite simple. I really love the way he portrays women — he makes them appear powerful while retaining their femininity.

destination you’ve always wanted to shoot at?I’ve been fortunate enough to shoot in many exotic and interesting locations around the world, from tropical islands and bustling first world metropolises to old, tired cities such as Budapest. I’ve been asked to lecture at the University of Nepal and, having done some Internet research, that looks like a fascinating country to shoot in.

What separates a good photographer from a great photographer?A great photographer has the innate ability to make his subjects feel completely at ease in front of the camera, without compromising on quality.

Fave place to shoot in Umhlanga and why?My favourite place to shoot in Umhlanga is the Oyster Box Hotel. The staff are efficient and friendly and the setting itself is breathtaking. There are hundreds of exquisite backdrops to choose from in this one location.

The long beautiful table was set up in front of the Cosmopolitan’s pool area this allowed us our own private dining area which just made the ambience unquestionably perfect.

Around the table we had a varied bunch ... Sean Temple our local fitness guru from Flux, his training buddy Tera Mtembu, who was not even allowed to have dessert (Sean won’t budge on his diet even for an event) Krystle and Nikolai from Umhlanga Centre Management, Chantelle from E&Y, Justin from Canon, Shane Botha from SMG, Aaron McIlroy and his beautiful sister Clare, Aaron was also a contributor to our mag in the past and, which was to be expected, the life of the party! And then finally some staff from the Fabmags team, our designer Daniel and our sales lady, Kubashni.

Cosmopolitan restaurant at the Urban Park hotel decorated the table with Christmas goodies, supplied a scrumptious buffet and made sure the wine flowed seamlessly. We are extremely impressed with the Cosmopolitan team, they handled our festive table of 15 expertly, The team were stars at looking after us. The mood was festive and everyone had a really good time, with so many stories and a lot of good laughs, a great evening was had by all. The food was the highlight of the evening and our biggest problem was deciding what not to try ... tough decision, so I must admit I, like most, tried a bit of everything !!

McDonald's South Africa has produced several stories of triumph and success even in the most difficult of times. The story of brothers, Prakash and Sanjay nathoo is a true portrayal of the entrepreneurial spirit of the organisation. They share their secrets to success and what it means to create a long-lasting legacy.

"It seems that we were born with entrepreneurship in our blood," Prakash said as he spoke of his father Dhiroo, who passed away in 2010. Dhiroo Nathoo's interest in owning a McDonald’s franchise started in the 1970s. He was already a well-known business man in Durban at the time, who owned clothing stores, and wholesale outlets in the region but, his interest and respect for the McDonald's brand caused him to contact McDonald's in the US for the opportunity to open a franchise in South Africa. When McDonald's announced their expansion to Africa in 1994 he decided to pursue the opportunity.

Dhiroo succeeded and opened McDonald's Old Fort Road in Durban in 1998. Sanjay worked with his father for a short while and later decided to branch off and start his own web design and retail businesses. Prakash, who was in the US at the time, worked as the corporate director of one of the largest hotel chains in America. Both brothers were

doing well for themselves in their chosen career paths, but in 2010 tragedy struck - their father Dhiroo passed away suddenly.

The brothers were left with a difficult choice to make. They both wanted to honour their father’s hard work over the years in the best way possible. The two MBA graduates then decided the best way to do this would be by taking over their father's McDonald's business – but this would be no simple task. "The McDonald's standard is very high, you must know exactly how the business works before you can run it," Prakash emphasized.

The brothers would have to go through the entire process of becoming registered McDonald’s franchisees. “Unlike any other business, we couldn’t inherit the franchise from our father without having the necessary knowledge to run the business, so it was a big learning experience for the both of us,” Prakash said. The two brothers completed their training and fully focused

their efforts on growing the business their father had left behind.

They feel that the greatest lesson they learnt from their father was the ability to take risks stating that, “If you don’t try, you will never know”. This lesson guided the brothers in expanding their business to great heights. By the end of 2012 the brothers had expanded their McDonald’s business and jointly owned six McDonald’s restaurants, including Old Fort Road, Pavilion, West Street, Field Street, Umhlanga, and McDonald’s Gateway. The brothers took the goal post further and undertook a further two restaurants which they added to their repertoire – Mount Edgecombe and Bridge City in Kwa Mashu.

Expanding the McDonald’s brand has always been a priority for both brothers since they took over their father’s business. Dhiroo taught them that as an entrepreneur and leader of any venture you have to “respect your employees and take care of the people who take care of you.” Applying this philosophy, amongst others, has helped the brothers to honour their father’s legacy, and build upon the knowledge he passed on to them.

Entrepreneurship is an important element of job creation and improving the economic climate of South Africa, and that’s why franchising is such an important part of the McDonald’s business. Sanjay and Prakash believe that in order to be successful entrepreneurs, individuals should “persevere, do their homework on the business they’re entering into, learn to take risks and be willing to work hard.” The Nathoo brothers are an example of the family values of McDonald’s and are a testament to the fact that resilience and hard work can lead to the creation of a long-lasting legacy.

Good advertising agencies help to enhance a company's brand or product image, but great

advertising agencies carry those campaigns across several media, providing brand consistency and an undiluted message, from billboards through to publications Coffee Creative Studio is one of these great advertising agencies! Let me introduce you to Chelsea Micklewood, Warrick Shannon

and Scott Smith, the young, but tremendously talented and highly caffeinated founders of Coffee Creative Studio, an Umhlanga based through-the-line advertising agency. Their company may be small, but their creative abilities know no bounds.

After opening their company in a garage in Westville a mere two years ago, they merged with online advertising agency, 20Four Creative

Solutions, and opened up shop in La Lucia as a fully-fledged agency minus the suit and tie. Since then, the company and its people have gone from strength to strength, progressively becoming one of the top small agencies on the coast and a much talked about brand! We speak to the creative gurus behind Coffee Creative Studio and find out how their journey from seed to tree began and where to from here!

From college graduates to business owners — how did that come about? We went to the Vega School of Brand Communications where we developed and honed our skills in our various specialisations. I (Chelsea) studied copywriting, Warrick went into visual communications and Scott focused on multimedia. During that time we got to know each other and formed a lasting friendship. After graduating and completing our internships at various agencies and companies, and with our holidays turning into actual unemployment, we met up for coffee to chat about our future careers. We decided that, while our CVs were circulating and we weren’t doing anything, we should join forces and do some freelance work. After working with a few clients the amazing power of word-of-mouth took over and things just snowballed from there.

What’s the story behind the name? The name has had a few meanings. It started because we all met for coffee, but as we grew, so did the meaning behind the name. As interns, we made a lot of coffee for people and we would often find ourselves asking “how do you like your coffee” and realising the

BUSinESS inTERViEW

unique likes and tastes of each person in the office— everyone has their personal preference, whether it’s a cappuccino or a latte, sugar no sugar. And this is the same for advertising. Every client wants something different. They want the perfect “coffee”, the right amount of sugar, just enough milk and the perfect hit of caffeine. At the end of the day, that is what we are offering our clients, that perfect cup of “coffee”; the perfect marketing strategy that suits them and their brand. It is about tailor making a package that works for them and that satisfies each brief.

We aren’t boardroom, suit-and-tie kind of people and a lot of our meetings take place over a cup of coffee. We pride ourselves on trying to get to know our clients really well, which extends to the coffee culture of sitting down over a cup and getting to know each other.

Tell us a bit about the company’s philosophy?Because we are a small company and are all very close, we have a great understanding of the company as a whole. We make a point of not divorcing

ourselves from the different projects that are going on. In that way we all have a personal relationship with all our clients and are able to service them to the best of our abilities as a creative team.

What have been some of the challenges you’ve faced so far?Definitely our age — people tend to be a bit apprehensive with giving young creatives the reigns to run with their brand. They would rather go with companies that have years and years of experience in the industry, which we can’t discredit, but it definitely made it a tough sealing some of those contracts.

In the initial stages people tended to think that what we did was just a hobby and that we didn’t want to make a living out of it, so justifying our pricing was challenging. We started the business knowing that the work that we did was good enough to compete with other agencies, but at the same time we understood that it was going to take people some time to realise our potential and we had to ensure that our service offering and pricing were competitive so that we could slowly build a great portfolio of clients. We had to put in the hard work and start at the bottom, sometimes working for free. It was never going to happen overnight. A lot of small companies can’t afford to spend big on their marketing, we have been able to create the same quality of work but

Page 51: The umhlanga 11th edition

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o. z a | 51

umhlanga

at very competitive prices — with low overheads come lower prices.

For a small and growing business, you offer a wide range of in-house expertise. does this set you apart from other advertising/marketing agencies in the area? Absolutely! Being a company with so many specialised services and abilities has made the limitations on what we can offer clients non-existent! We offer 360-degree marketing, from things like web development, to copy, to design, photography and then some. Plus, our no-fear attitude allows us to take on any project that we are tasked with. We don’t limit ourselves in what we can do, because we can do pretty much anything. And, while that might sound arrogant, it’s actually not — in this day and age, with technology and the Internet, you can pretty much learn anything that you need to… if you don’t know, ask Google!

Who have been some of your big clients?Fidelity Security Group, iGO Travel, Shave Paint and Décor, Wakaberry, PEG, South African Rugby Legends, Investec International Rugby Academy, Leather Gallery and Rotary Durban are just some of the awesome clients that we have been lucky enough to work with.

What are the biggest challenges facing advertising agencies today?Budget! I don’t think that companies have the budgets for advertising that they used to have.

Relevancy! Everyone has to adapt and evolve, and a lot of companies have fallen by the wayside because they couldn’t offer the wide scope of services demanded by clients. Our diversity has allowed us the opportunity to provide traditional and non-traditional media options to our clients.

As advertising is such a demanding industry, especially since you’re a new company do you have time for a life after work?We still have a social life, but I think that the biggest thing is that your brain never switches off. You always find yourself talking or strategizing about work at home or when you are out. At the end of the day, this is our passion. It’s not a means to an end. We love this field and that is why we are in it.

In your mind, what does the future of the agency look like?I think that it’s every creative’s dream to do creative stuff and get paid for it. So for now that’s awesome! We are definitely going to keep it small, maintaining the essence of our company, which is knowing the company through and through and keeping it personal. But, in saying that, our goals are continually changing because we are still growing and, as the industry, culture and needs of society change, so we will have to change and adapt. But we will forever remain true to our specialisations and continue to create great work.

Any life/career advice to creative’s who have just started out?Don’t be scared to take a risk. Going out on your own can be quite daunting, but I think that when you are young and fresh out of college, and while you have no responsibilities, you have nothing to lose, so go for it. As an individual, you will learn and grow so much from it and not just in your chosen field as a creative. You learn to step outside your specialization and comfort zone, thus growing and pushing yourself as a person.

Tell us something that people don’t know about you.Hopefully, after this article, people will stop thinking that we are a coffee shop, although we do make great coffee!

I was recently invited to come and experience Pure Skincare and Beauty Clinic, a brand new salon that has opened in Durban North. Samantha,

the vibrant owner of the beauty clinic, and her two staff members greeted me with a flute of iced tea to sip while getting all the essential details down. The salon is beautiful and is ideally situated downstairs inside the gym area at the DHS old boys building.

The first thing that you become aware of once you step into Pure, is the calmness of the salon. Whilst chatting to Sam, I discover that this young woman has been ready for this salon for a very long time, having been totally obsessed with all things beauty from a young age. Having studied beauty and skincare, she is well experienced and has an in-depth knowledge of the human skin, her products, and so on.

We started with a microdermabrasion, which really is one of my favourite skin

treatments. Nothing beats how good your skin feels after that. Samantha has thought of everything and her salon reflects the Pure passion she has for this industry. I LOVE that she uses steamed cleaning cloths during all her treatments — no water bowls — which is a nice touch. My skin felt great and again I was thoroughly impressed with Sam’s expertise. She also has a passion for wanting to give everyone the opportunity to have good skin and she has worked hard at making sure that she has the right advanced technology. This has enabled her to offer her clients the benefits of it at an affordable price, so that she can offer all her clients the luxury of perfect skin.

I then moved on to another quiet room to have my facial done. From the minute you walk in, you are aware of the sheer luxury offered at this spa. You are covered in a gorgeous, thick blanket before your facial, which is a nice change from the usual towels. I was quite intrigued that

SPA REViEW

Pure Luxury

my facial started with a back massage which was actually just the perfect way to start. Sam explained that they have adopted a number of the old ways of doing their treatments. I then rolled over to start the facial and again was totally enthralled by the fact that my feet were wiped first — it was almost a spiritual washing of the feet experience. Nana then thoroughly pampered me. The salon uses an SA product called SIX that is very popular in Johannesburg. It is an internationally formulated product that is packaged locally to make it affordable without compromising on quality. SIX’s philosophy is to provide a product that delivers results while making you feel good by appealing to your six senses. It feels nice on your skin and I was really impressed by it. It smells amazing and every product also has a different highlighted smell (citrus, watermelon). It is a totally unique and incredible treatment that will leave your skin looking like new!

This salon offers too much to mention it all, but it is very active online (Facebook), with bookings made online or through your smartphone and everything you need to know all in one place.

Walking into the Umhlanga Hair and Beauty Salon at the Umhlanga Centre was truly exciting — I

immediately felt both refreshed and welcomed!

I was greeted by Louise who is really energetic, passionate about hair and has been a hair stylist for 30 years! Don has been running the salon at the Umhlanga Centre for 3 years. He is a live-wire, who is determined to maintain the high standard of professionalism that he has set. The salon uses Wella products, an established brand that attracts a large clientele.

Ula, my stylist, began my appointment by sitting and chatting to me as she studied my hair and asked questions.

HAiR REViEW

She suggested rich brown foil highlights, a look which is subtle but will separate my layers and also enhance my style to match my personality. I was a bit nervous about the highlights, as I am not one for drastic colours, but after Ula’s in-depth explanation of the process, I was excited and looked forward to the change!

Whilst my colour was being applied, I relaxed and enjoyed a strong cup of tea accompanied by a delicious rusk.

Ula, is originally from Poland and has been with Umhlanga Hair for a while now. She has also owned and managed

a hair salon in the past, so is very experienced in this field.

Okay, back to my hair... after my colour had set, it was off to the washbasin where I was handed over to Priscilla, the shampooist. I was given a glossing treatment, which took approximately 30 minutes, to tone down the highlights, then a post-colour treatment, followed by a MUCH-anticipated head massage (always my favourite part) — amazing.

I was then handed back to Ula to finish off. I had a cut which left the length and added a side fringe. This was followed by a movement blow wave.

Wow! I was really impressed with my new hair-do. It looked and felt amazing…

Well done to the fabulous team Louise, Symon and Ula.

What an ULA-la-la experience!

J ack Salmon is an eatery that should be on your list of the top five places to eat out at. This delightful restaurant blends

personal service, a relaxed ambience, good fun and great food into a dining experience that has you smiling broadly when you leave.

We visited on a vibey Friday night and found our host, Jason, to be on his usual top form. We started out with some fresh sushi, which is a recent addition to the menu. It was a great starter and the Rainbow Reload can only be described as a sushi sensation. The crunch of the tempura prawn played off against the taste of the sweet soy adds a special zing to this specific sushi dish and it is worth a special visit for this alone.

In between courses we found the service prompt and friendly and our waiter, Ricky, was knowledgeable about the menu, recommending what might work for us, depending on our individual tastes. The service puts you at ease as you let your waiter talk you through the menu and help you make choices.

The prawns are a top dish and are recommended by the team at Jack Salmon. If you haven’t had them, we agree — they really do come highly-recommended, especially with the special Jack’s Sauce.

We tried the steak on its own for the young guy at our table and the kitchen made sure that he was happy by making a special order of it. My Surf and Turf proved that Jack Salmon does as well with its meat dishes as it does with its seafood — the steak literally melts in your mouth.

If you’re still struggling to choose, the combos and platters are favourites, giving patrons a variety of flavours. The catch of the day also serves up a tasty line fish option.

With little room left for dessert after such great food, served in extremely generous portions, we decided to tough it out anyway and go for it... good call. J’s Death by Chocolate Brownie is a deep-fried brownie with ice cream, with coarse salt and chilli on the side — it is truly the best way to top off a great dining experience.

All in all, it was a great night out for us and we all agreed that from now on, Jack Salmon would be on our list of top restaurants to visit. We suggest that you call Jason and make a booking — you’ll be glad that you did.

When did you know dJ-ing was your calling in life? Growing up, my goal was always to become a doctor. But that’s what makes life so beautiful — you never know what the future really has in store for you or what obstacles can pave the way for new and exciting challenges. It all started when I was 15 and used to go to the Natal University Campus for maths tutoring. On my visits, I noticed that there was a campus radio station. I was intrigued by this so, before my dad picked me up, I would go there every day and hang out with the radio hosts. They, like my teachers, commented on how well I spoke and eventually gave me a chance to go on air. I tried it and, the bug bit — from that moment on I knew that this was something I wanted to pursue.

So what happened after the bug bit you?I remember going home all pumped and excited and I tried to make my own mixing centre at home. I ended up breaking a few tape recorders and, needless to say, got the hiding of my life, but my parents caught on pretty quickly that I had developed a really keen interest in radio. Being the supportive parents that they are, they encouraged me and helped me to make my dreams come true. In my matric year, I joined the college radio station full-time and started to toy with the idea of getting into in this line of work. After matric, I received a bursary to study at medical school and also a position at Red Cap Radio as a DJ. I had to decide which path I wanted to follow — either to carry on studying or go to radio full-time. I chose where my true passion lay. Growing up we didn’t have much, so I had to use my feet as my mode of transport to get from A to B, but even in those times I never lost sight of my goals and enjoyed every minute of it.

How did you get the job at East Coast Radio?Red Cap Radio has been a good platform for many Dj’s who have spring boarded to FM radio - mostly East Coast Radio! I was one of those lucky people and I will never forget how in 2007 Navin Singh called me up and offered me the opportunity of a lifetime, a position as a host on the Weekend Breakfast show. My dream had come true and my career just skyrocketed from then on. During 2011, I made the move to Highveld but never really felt as at home as I did at ECR. Also, our province is just phenomenal on every level. When I got back I started the Deon Govender Three-day Weekend show and I have never been happier.

during your career you’ve interviewed some top names — drop a name or two?Yes, I have been extremely blessed and fortunate to have met and interviewed some amazing national and international artists, amongst them some of the biggest names in the music industry! Some of my

favourites have been Pitbull, T-Pain, Busta Rhymes, Jay Sean, Akon, Edward Maya, Kelly Clarkson, Snoopdog, Fatman Scoop, Kerry Hilson and Chris Brown. I truly love what I get to do and the amazing people that I get to meet.

As well as being a radio dJ and presenter, you also MC and dJ at some great local events. Tell us about some memorable ones?We have some of the best events here in KZN and the audiences are always phenomenal, so it’s quite a privilege for us DJs to be involved in them. Colour Fest Durban was an awesome event to DJ at. Aquafest is a dream event for any DJ to attend. Wave House 2011, East Coast Party Cruise, Durban Day 2011, Rock the Beach, which was hands-down the best beach event Durban’s ever seen as well as the first-ever multiracial beach party.

Who would you say your audience is?Friday is fun Deon, Saturday is party Deon, where I do a whole show live at Suncoast,

and Sunday is chilled Deon. Because I run a three-day show, each day is different and appeals to different ages, but I think my comfort zone is with the younger generation. I believe that if you gain their loyalty from a young age they will stay with you forever, but for the most part I try to keep my choice of music quite flexible.

Your Facebook following is impressive! Is being interactive with your audience important to you?I believe that your Facebook fans are your family, the growth of your brand directly correlates with how they feel about you! If you don’t have time for them, then they don’t have time for you! Simple... I also think that my Facebook following is so large because I talk about stuff that is relevant, things that people can relate to, so this makes them actually want to interact. To all my followers on FB, Twitter, etc, you guys are awesome and it’s because of you that I am here today!

Most touching story you’ve ever heard during your radio career? Recently an avid listener’s son emailed to thank me for helping his mom, saying that she was suffering from cancer of the tongue and had been in ICU for going on six months and that I had helped make her recover. In the email was a scanned letter that the mom had written. After reading, it I was so flattered and blessed that I wanted to find out more. I phoned the son whilst on air and asked him to tell me his story and read out his mom’s letter. He told me that while his mom had been really sick and unable to speak for six months, all that she had done was listen to my show and that he believed that listening to me was what had made her better. This was truly the most heart-warming moment I have ever had. At the end of the day, if you can leave this life knowing that you have helped at least one person, your time on earth was well spent.

You were voted durban’s best dJ for 2013. Tell us about the competition? The competition was run by the Durban Municipality and the I love Durban website to find Durban’s best DJ. After numerous polls, the top four were Black Coffee, Tira, Sox and me. When I heard this, I immediately thought that there was no way that I could beat Black Coffee — he’s huge! We were each given two weeks to get as many people to vote for us as we could. By the end, Black Coffee and I were neck-and-neck but, after a little help from all my friends — yes, all you fans — I came out on top and what

an honour it is! I was nominated by the people and voted in by them, which is a great feeling and shows me that I’m doing something right!

So what does the future hold?I am currently working on opening an academy offering DJ courses where I hope to empower young kids who have the dream and want to further their careers in music and/or media. So watch this space!

however, the coffee culture in Umhlanga is booming and

we are showcasing four of our town’s best coffee shops — places that are as unique as they are great. We also chat to Deon Erwee, a well-known and knowledgeable coffee merchant, to find out just what makes for truly mind-blowing coffee.

Deon started off with Pfizer in the pharmaceutical industry but, after a

midlife corporate meltdown, realised that the best legal drug to be had was coffee, so here is Deon’s expert advice on coffee!

What’s the most important thing when roasting coffee beans?Coffee is an extremely labour-intensive relationship and, as a commodity, passes through many, many hard-working hands before it arrives at the roaster, which has to turn the green beans into something new and special — not only to bring out the best characteristics of the beans, but to represent the culmination of all

the efforts from seedling to green bean! Roasting is a very “hands-on” experience that embraces artisan know-how and skill!

What is the best type of coffee bean? There are more than 70 different coffee species worldwide. Commercially available are Arabica and Robusta. Most artisan roasters love to work with Arabica as these coffee beans possess the greatest flavour potential, without a bitter aftertaste. Arabica also has great aromatic characteristics.

do you believe that coffee culture in KZN and, in particular, in Umhlanga is becoming more popular? For sure — great things are happening on our coffee scene! More and more coffee lovers are supporting coffee establishments where skilled Baristas can make a quality espresso-based drink. Also more establishments, and the general public, are supporting local coffee roasters because they want to know the quality and the origin of the beans, the blend dynamics, the style of roasting/roast profile, the freshness factor, etc. Increased media coverage and competitions, like Cafe Society, regional and national Barista competitions, coffee blogs and social media, coffee clubs, etc also make people more aware of coffee culture.

What is the most important element when making a perfect cappuccino?Perfect espresso extraction balanced with micro-textured milk.

What do you think is the best coffee drink?Espresso and Ristretto — that’s real coffee!

Any interesting facts about coffee?• Coffee is the second-largest legally

traded commodity in the world.• Most farmers have never tasted their

own coffee.• In moderation, Arabica coffee beans

have positive health benefits.

Three must-haves at your café or at home to make the perfect cup?Good-quality equipment, understanding the brewing principles of your equipment and having the skill necessary to work it. Source freshly roasted coffee.

Roasting is a very “hands-on” experience that embraces artisan know-how and skill!

This is an unpretentious coffee shop for bikers and coffee-lovers alike. Everything about it breathes energy and old school, classic American charm and I love the vintage ambiance of the old bikes and biker-lifestyle imagery splashed on the walls. The space is light and the smell of coffee wafts through the room. The menu is very small, but it features good, easy food that appeals to everyone from young to old. Although there is only inside seating at present, it is planned to introduce outside seating in the new year. But on to the most important part — the coffee! Barista Ernest Droes is meticulous and quite obsessive about

coffee, which is never a bad thing, so you are always guaranteed a perfect cup. I tried out their signature cup, the Cortado, for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The flavour is bold but not overpowering and the fact that you are not supposed to add sugar actually didn’t bother me because the way the milk is textured brings out the sweetness in it. The way in which it was served, in a short glass, was very different but made me feel like a pro coffee drinker. I just love the vibey atmosphere of this place, including the owners’ die-hard passion for both bikes and coffee.

The buzz around town is that the new coffee shop, I Want My Coffee, is fast becoming the place to grab a cuppa and a quick breakfast before work and also to get your noon fix of a great health sarmie and another cuppa. The vibe is super-relaxed, which makes it a great space to catch up on some work with the free WiFi. I love the look and feel of the top-to-bottom chalkboard walls, which are sprinkled with humorous quotes and specials. Having a radio station and recording studio in the back adds to its uniqueness and provides great classic rock music throughout the day — songs that you have probably never heard before. There is both inside and outside seating, which offer a different ambiance

for every occasion. Almost everything on the menu is fresh and organic and I especially loved the adventurous coffees created by Ard. The Orange Cappuccino is my fave — I’ve never ever had such a refreshing cuppa, plus it’s sweetened with xylitol so you feel absolutely no guilt in drinking it. Sam, Ard’s right-hand man and Barista, has some serious coffee making skills, plus a friendly and sociable personality! All in all, it’s a superb coffee shop, with lots of character and an awesome ambiance. There’s even a library of books on offer for customers who just want to chill out for the day and read a good book!

Vovo Telo is an awesome, lively spot and, even at the start of the lunch hour on a Wednesday, the place was full! The atmosphere is relaxed, yet just quirky enough to feel cool. It is both a coffee shop and bakery, with fresh goodies on display every day. The menu is vast and the food is top quality, with everything from sauces to food made in-house from scratch. The restaurant is spacious, with lots of inside seating, plus plenty of outside seating in a fenced-off verge, which is really nice for summer days. The ambiance is very homely and comfortable — I can definitely see myself coming here for breakfast or lunch with the family, or to

grab a lazy lunch with the girls. Kids can sit in the bakery corner and make their own breads, which I think is very cool and gets them out of mom’s hair whilst she catches up on gossip. The interior and decor is natural and earthy, which I love. It exudes vintage chic and the bunnies that are placed around the café add character to the place. The signature cuppa is their cappuccino, of which they make over 500 a day, so you can be sure that it’s better than great! Add a fresh pastry and you’ve got a winning combo right there.

Ducati is the longest-running café on our list of best cafés, clocking in at eight years of continuous good service, great food and even better coffee. The café has a great, low-key vibe which invites people to come together in a tranquil space to share in their passion for the Ducati lifestyle. It’s a very quaint little place, doubling as the Ducati bikes and apparel showroom. The menu is simple, with some Italian favourites, and appeals to most people

looking for a quick bite to eat. The coffee is great, with bold flavours and an almost creamy texture. Seating is mainly outside and the ambiance reminds me of a little Italian trattoria. It’s a firm fave with locals looking for something simple, yet effective. M The festive season is approaching and now is the time to start to think about long, lazy summer days, family, entertaining, the delicious

Christmas spread that you need to put together and, of course, your table décor. Christmas is a time for giving and receiving. It’s also the time for abundance of spirit and a time when wonderful memories are made. But, for some, it can also be a time that can be immensely stressful — ensuring that your home looks fabulous, making sure that your holiday visitors are comfortable, what to buy for whom, planning that distinct but original Christmas table setting, and much more.

Well, thank goodness, Schanè Anderson of O làlà Interiors at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito, has some simple but effective tips for Christmas. Shop early and don’t leave things to the last minute — whether that’s gifts or groceries. Plan carefully when shopping and know what type of gifts you’re looking for, be it for the special person in your life, your children’s teachers, or that eccentric aunt that you haven’t seen for years. By doing this, you will avoid that random, aimless shopping drift that results in poorly-chosen gifts, that

“What was I thinking?” moment, or breaking the bank because you had no other option.

In terms of menu and table settings, this is not the time to skimp. Think brave, bold and beautiful. Christmas is certainly the time to trot out your finest. Opulent tablecloths and place-mats. Your best crystal glasses. The finest porcelain. Choose a colour scheme, add serviettes and include plenty of freshly cut flowers or leafy African greenery, candles or objets d’art. Try and reflect your own style, rather than going for the predictable European Christmas décor. If you want to include some sparkle, now is the time to bring out the bling-bling!

“In terms of décor, we are reliving the trends from about 10 years ago — hot colours, pinks, aubergines, yellow and turquoises. Colour and innovative lighting are played off against one another and designs are bolder and more graphic, with plenty of mood lighting and fireplaces to enhance rooms.” Says Schanè

Specialists in interior design and decorating services, Schanè, Jeanine, Penny and the installation teams at O làlà are able to tackle

interior design and decorating projects, including large-scale residential projects, renovations and refurbishments. They have also successfully handled commercial and retail projects, having done work for Vodacom, Bernina, Pam Golding, Kitchen Classics, Medscheme and various game lodges around the country. Schanè believes that the success of O làlà lies in her 20 years of owning and running the business with passion, an eye for detail and creating spaces that reflect the homeowner’s personal style.

O làlà stocks premium products at market related prices. The store at Lifestyle provides an experience in unusual, adaptable and functional art and gifts — ideal for gifting. One is sure to find stylish novelties, potential heirlooms, sophisticated collections, or articles that exude elegant simplicity. Brands include Alessi, Carrol Boyes, Le Creuset, Zak, Manneki, LunaC, Greenleaf, Charlotte Rhys and Yankee Candle, amongst others. O làlà is also a stockist for numerous lighting companies, including KLight, Spazio, LumiArt and others. Denise manages the retail boutique together with her friendly team, Nellie, Slie, Gugu and Robyn.

“To give real service,

you must add something

which cannot be bought or

measured with money, and

that is sincerity and integrity.”

BUSinESS FEATURE

How many times have you arrived home from work and the first thing you do — before you even kiss your family hello — is kick off your shoes and revel in the sweet

relief of painless comfort in your natural state! Don’t you find it odd that for the last 50 or so years people have been complaining more and more about back, knee and this-and-that pain — about the same time since the shoe with a heel-to-toe gradient was invented? Coincidence? Science says not!

I recently had an interesting chat with Chris Le Clos, the national supplier of the remarkable and not-so-new product, Vivobarefoot, the original Barefoot shoe and the first of its kind (before the copycats came along, of course). The brand was launched in 2003 by the Clark brothers, who are from a family with seven generations of shoemaking behind them. After the brothers had undertaken extensive research into feet and how they work best, the magnificent science behind Vivobarefoot was discovered!

This science is very simple. As Chris explains, when we start to walk, we walk barefoot. This is when we are in the best possible posture for our body. We have on average 200 000 receptors in our feet that are all connected to various parts of our body, be it an arm or leg, etc, and the influence of these receptors on the overall functioning of our bodies is quite remarkable — the Chinese have even found ways to heal people through their feet.

So, what happens when you put on your padded footwear is that you start to decrease the sensory feedback from your feet to the various parts of your body — and this happens from the time we start walking, progressively altering our movements and taking our posture out of alignment. Given enough time, we slowly start to generate injuries like back and joint pain. In a research study by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Harvard University, it was found that by wearing padded shoes with a heel-to-toe difference, we are actually wearing down our muscles and bones. Think what it would be like if you had to have your arm wrapped in plaster-of-paris for a couple of months — your muscles would eventually deteriorate because you didn’t use them and this is exactly what happens when you wear shoes.

Now, unlike regular shoes, the Vivobarefoot shoe has what is called an anatomic toe box, which allows your foot to do what it does naturally and move with surface changes. Think about when you run — in your average takkie you end up striking with your heel first instead of with the forefoot because there is such a heavy, uneven sole. According to Chris, this is like driving down a hill and slamming on the brake every two seconds — eventually your brakes would start to wear out! You might well think that striking with your forefoot sounds wrong. I know that I did, but it’s not — the correct technique for running is to run as you would if you ran barefoot, taking

short strides with your back up straight and striking on your forefoot.

The power and benefits of these “barefoot” shoes is truly incredible. Before Chris moved back to S.A, he played rugby overseas and during this time he was injured numerous times, until he eventually had to retire. Getting fit again was tough as his old injuries continually flared up. After changing to Vivobarefoot, these injuries have not only healed, but new injuries have been prevented and his muscle tone, sensory perception and core strength have increased.

These days everyone is obsessed with living a healthy lifestyle, so why would you not want to increase the longevity of your muscles and bones by wearing the right shoe? After all, the foundation of our bodies is our feet and they are therefore something that we should be looking after. If that hasn’t convinced you, then maybe the green aspect of the shoes will! All Vivobarefoot shoes are produced sustainably, using recycled, locally-sourced materials, with efficient and eco-friendly production techniques.

The range of shoes is extensive and specifically designed for varying elements, terrains, and activities. The range features everything from fashionable lifestyle shoes for both adults and kids to high-performance off-road and trail-running shoes and all are patent-protected and impenetrable — there is literally nothing like them on the market at the moment.

By now you should be jumping up and down and saying, “Where on earth can I get these awesome shoes?” Well, Freespool at Gateway and Flux Motion in Umhlanga stock some of their products and Chris is currently in the midst of opening a concept store in Hillcrest, with another in La Lucia, where one can visit and learn about the shoes and have a walk- and running-test done, or you can buy online at www.vivobarefootkzn.com.

After an hour with Chris, I was sold, so do yourself a favour and speak to someone who’s made the transition and they will tell you how life-changing the shoes really are! No one sells Vivobarefoot like someone who owns them...

ADVERTORiAL

For many who set out in business there are dreams of impressive, well-furnished offices with amazing floor to ceiling windows where you

stand with cappuccino in hand staring out at the world yonder that you have conquered. The dreams include reception areas that warmly greet the adoring clients who meet with you in your modern board rooms with all the latest razzle and dazzle. Those aspirations of success are as much about the office space we desire as it is about the products or services that will change the world. The journey to a national footprint with offices in all major cities across the country seems way off for many but it’s not as difficult as you might think. The traditional challenges which include searching for prime space, onerous lease agreements and setting up empty spaces with modern offices with all the ‘razzle and dazzle’ are what keep many of us stuck dreaming of how having an office in Cape Town or Jo’burg would take our business to a whole new level.

So what is the answer? We believe it’s a company called The Business Centre, a network of serviced offices with a national footprint which include the well-known building here on Umhlanga’s Ridge. The Business Centre has modelled an office solution to cater for startups all the way through to the established businesses. They have combined the best of business locations, professional office staff and leading edge technology to provide the perfect space for your national expansion, irrespective of your size. Their solution has also considered the stress associated with long term commitment and allows for shorter, more manageable periods of 3, 6 or 12 months - which also means you can get set up far quicker. From the bustling suburbs of Jo’burgs Broadacres, Fourways, Rivonia and Bryanston to Durban’s Umhlanga and Cape Town’s Century City you’ll be able to get those dream offices with unique, trendy interiors in an open, contemporary design with a natural look and feel. They’ve even thought of the stuff you wouldn’t

like framed artwork and extraordinary wallpapers to add those finishing touches. If you’re a slightly smaller business and don’t need the actual space but would prefer to have a virtual office, The Business Centre allows you to get that professional edge for your business image without taking up office space full time. With their virtual office solution you are able to run your business from anywhere. The professional receptionists at the regional offices answer your business calls and take messages in your company name – presto, just like that you’ve got offices in all cities across the country. When you do head off to another city to sign that life changing deal you’ll be able to do so from your ‘offices’ right there because the virtual office solution allows you to book meeting rooms for that all important meetings. So if you believe you’re ready to go national – without the stress – check out The Business Centre and give them a call.

Red Frogs, a support network that aims to be a positive presence in party environments, started in South Africa when a group of

friends realised that there was a great need for a support network for Matrics on their year-end holiday. The friends piled into a clapped-out VW Kombi and began giving lifts to Matrics who were wandering the streets. Coincidentally, during their third year in Ballito, they heard about an organisation in Australia, the Red Frogs, at the same time as the Red Frogs heard about what they were doing in SA. It was evident that both groups had the same desire to safeguard a generation of young people and so, in 2009, Red Frogs South Africa was launched as an initiative of the Grace Family Church.

In South Africa the team started in Ballito over the Matric holiday and, as volunteer numbers grew, Red Frogs has been able to expand to Umhlanga, Plettenberg Bay, and Margate for the first time this year. With continued support from communities and individuals, the Red Frogs have been able to expand their activities into areas other than the annual Matric break and now offer their support at festivals and universities around the country as well. The Red Frogs currently provide support and a positive presence at UCT, Stellies, Wits and festivals such as Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, Fun in the Sun, and Umhlanga’s monthly Party in the Park.

The Red Frogs make it their mission to provide a positive peer presence in alcohol-fuelled environments where young

people gather, to educate young people on safe partying, and to promote and provide non-alcoholic and/or diversionary activities that engage young people in these environments. Too many times it is under the influence of alcohol or drugs that young people make life-altering decisions and it is the Red Frogs’ hope that, by being a positive presence, they will help to safeguard this generation.

Every year the team visits schools around the country, presenting the topic of How to Party Safely. The main message that the Red Frogs try to convey is to be aware and to be yourself, because it’s not good to start changing your behaviour or trying new things for the first time in a party environment.

“Because we are practical, available and consistent in serving, we are placed in a position of trust by young people, thereby enabling us to walk with them through some of the most challenging times of their lives. We take every opportunity to engage in acts of generosity that foster relationships and display genuine care and concern for the lives of others.” Simple acts, like making free pancakes and handing out water and Red Frog sweets, allows the teams to connect with party-goers and build friendships and trust. It is because of this trust that party-goers will call on the Red Frogs if they get into a situation where they feel uncomfortable. At events like Party in the Park, the Red Frogs can be found both on the streets and inside the park. The Red Frog crew primarily act as an intermediary

between the party-goers and other service providers, like security personnel and first aiders, referring anyone in need to the appropriate services. At festivals and other events, the Red Frog crew is able to manage the hydration of party-goers by providing volunteers to man water stations at the venue and hand out free bottles of water to those in need of hydration.

The Red Frogs have again expressed their gratitude for the continued support they receive in funding and backing this initiative. It is the hope of this team that the Red Frogs Support Network will continue to empower young people to make positive life choices and become a voice of change within their cultures.

Be a kid for a day!!

Remember the days when

you were young and carefree

and a weekend when the sun

didn’t shine was spent in the

entertainment centre at your local mall?

Until a recent visit to Electric Avenue

at Gateway, I had totally forgotten how

much fun this was/is!

As a sort of end-of-the-year-team-

building-experience, we decided to

do something completely different,

something that could ignite the kid

inside us and spur our competitive

spirits to full throttle! So, when we were

offered a day at Electric Avenue, it was

as if our wishes had come true!

That Friday afternoon our eight-man

team arrived at Electric Avenue, roaring

and ready for some laughter and

carefree fun. We met with the manager

who led us to our first activity of the day

— Action Karting. As you can imagine,

the men turned their testosterone to

“turbo”, thinking that they had this in

the bag — but think again! To start, we

watched an introductory movie showing

us the do’s and don’ts and then we

were split up into two teams. I was in

the first team, which saw me coming a

dismal third as two of our petrol-head

staff lapped our accounts lady and

me — TWICE! It’s quite an exhilarating

feeling to be on the track, pedal to

the metal, negotiating sharp corners

whilst trying not to crash into the

barriers! Team Two saw the Boss Man

and our Designer Lady taking 1st and

2nd places. Then it was on to the final,

with two men against two women — a

defining moment if there ever was one.

It was a proud moment for all women

when our Designer Lady, the youngest

in our team, took the title of Ultimate

Action Karter and stood at the top of the

podium!

With our adrenaline pumping, we moved

on to the 4D simulator. (Caution, women

— tighten those bra straps ’coz it’s

gonna be a bumpy ride!) It really does

take your viewing experience to a whole

new level of unreal. There was a lot of high-pitched screaming from some of the girls and plenty of shocked faces. After the scare tactics, we were on to the Formula Dodgems / bumper cars — what better way to vent some grudges! (Cue in naughty laugh.) Apparently there were a lot of suppressed grudges because at every move someone was bumping you, and then other bumping into them until eventually we were all

bunched together and no one could move. It’s amazing how simple things like this can infuse so much pleasure into a group of deadline stressed people!

After we had all had enough of getting bumped to hell and gone, we were onto our next competitive game, the Hammer, where the objective is to see how hard you can hit.

The result? Well, with my skinny arms I really tried my best and put all my might into it, which resulted in a fairly good score and a ricochet hammer into the nose. But, hey, I didn’t come last! At this point Designer Man showed his true dark-horse colours by taking the record hit and bringing home a no.1! Straight after the Hammer, we were on to the Boxer, which again saw a man win but, on the plus side, my nose was safe from any ricocheting items.

But enough of brute strength versus brain — it was time to test our skills on the Super Bike Challenge and the Dead Heat Challenge! Don’t underestimate these simulator machines — they are damn hard, especially if you’re vying for that much-wanted first place. Remember, this is a competition, so all sense of humour goes out of the window — especially if there are prizes at the end, so get your game face on! At the end Boss Man and Designer Lady took first place in the Superbikes and then on to the cars. It was a dismal day for me, but my hopes were high. We still had bowling ahead and after a quick bite to eat and a drink, I was sure that my A game would come out. The snacks and drinks provided

by Electric Avenue were awesome and enough to get our clocks ticking again. With our seriously gorgeous bowling shoes on, we entered the lumo-lit room, where the atmosphere and music was just enthralling, getting all of us dancing as if we were at nightclub — a nightclub were everyone wears funny shoes!

After a team talk, we were ready to win this game! In the first round everyone performed outstandingly. Team Two looked as if they had never held a bowling ball in their life before. Team One was super-happy about this. Long story short, however — never get complacent or underestimate your opponents. We lost miserably and Team Two played like hustlers… they like to call themselves

the legendary Comeback Kids! It made for a fantastic end to the competition. So who, you may ask, took home the first, second and third prizes? Boss Man, with a whopping number of points, took 1st prize, which was a Red Square bag filled with Red Square goodies — caps, jerseys, jackets, beanie, T-shirts, etc. In 2nd place was Sales Lady one, who took home a voucher for Electric Avenue, and in 3rd place was Designer Lady Kate. who received a few boxes of chocolate!

To end the day off, we sipped on cocktails at Manhattans Action Bar and let the chilled vibes roll over us. The cocktail bar offers great cocktails and a vibey atmosphere, as well as a plethora of pool tables, but at this point we were

BRoNZE BEACHThis is the quieter and more relaxed beach that locals like to go to. There’s no restaurant but there are food stalls. It is also an official swimming area with a lifeguard tower. The beach is very open and unsheltered, so the waves are quite strong. In my opinion, it’s a good beach if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the often overcrowded main beach and just have a relaxed tanning session.

(CABANA BEACH) MAIN BEACH Voted overall best beach is Main Beach, also known as Cabana Beach. This is where it’s all happening! It offers beachgoers a plethora of restaurants and other great activities. The surf is good and the water is great for swimming. The locals regard it as a tourist beach as it is lined by many hotels and resorts but, in terms of an entertaining day out, it wins hands down! There is a lifeguard tower on the beach so you know that you are always in safe hands and there is plenty of space for “bronzing”. Visitors can also hire beach accessories, should they wish to do so.

Being able to live on the coast means that we have an awesome lifestyle and, with the holidays right around the corner

and summer in full swing, what better way to spend time than down on the beach in your bikini — guys, strictly

baggies ONLY! But if you’re a visitor, how do you know what beach best suits you and your needs? The answer is that

you don’t — until now that is! We recently got people to vote on the I love Durban website for their favourite beaches in

Umhanga, over 90 people responded and, according to them, these are the three best beaches and what they are suitable for!

LIGHTHoUSE BEACHThis beach is strictly a “no swimming” area because of all the rocks but it is great for people with young kids, as the rocks provide quiet pools for kids to frolic in. You can see miniature sea-life in the pools and the beach is quite small. It is also one of the few beaches that you can fish from. Another one of its draw cards is the fact that it is in the shadow of the fabulous Oyster Box Hotel.

W ith the Christmas holidays already here, you can be certain that South Africans are heading to the shops to

spoil themselves with the latest gadgets, fashions, clothing and toys. It’s how we’ve been doing it for generations and there’s nothing wrong with it — well, almost nothing. The dreaded lost receipt is part of the holiday scenario and, apart from too much sun, it is one of the most painful post-holiday experiences.

South Africans are not great at keeping their receipts and that’s a fact. With a false sense of security, many shoppers believe that the Consumer Protection Act will protect them this year, but this is not the case and not having a copy of your receipt could end up in goods not being accepted for return or replaced. Even worse, consumers could find themselves with a repair bill, after the holidays are over, when budgets are stretched or empty.

And if you think that you can use the “cooling-off period”, you’re mistaken — unless you made your purchase through direct marketing — but we can probably assume that you’re not going to be doing the majority of your Christmas shopping like that. So what is the term for unwanted presents? They’re known as “change-of-heart purchases” and what that means is that if there isn’t anything wrong with the tablet you received when you actually wanted an iPad, the store is not legally obliged to take it back at all — that’s a change-of-heart purchase and you now have to operate according to the retailer’s returns policy and that is when the dreaded receipt or slip is needed. Remember… that slip that you threw away or lost?

That said, most of the large retailers will consider taking stuff back as a customer-value-add as long as it isn’t broken, but it isn’t a legal obligation on their part. This is where that copy of your till slip is

needed. No matter what it is that you’re buying, especially at this time of year, we recommend that you keep the slip in a safe, secure place or consider using an online service, such as the South African-developed app, MySlips, which allows you to quickly and easily upload a copy of your slip so that it is easily accessible, any time and any place. The process of getting a copy saved and stored is extremely easy, taking only a few seconds with MySlips, and will save you hours or frustration and possibly thousands of Rands.

No matter how you decide to keep your slips safe, remember that retailers aren’t obliged to take items back, so you would be smart to figure out their return policies if you’re worried about the gift you buying. Safest bet for Christmas? Sign up for a MySlips account at R48.00 a year (Yes, for the whole year!) and put those lost receipts woes behind you!

WoRdS RICHARD WEBB

Very few new cars are bad anymore, says Richard Webb, as he looks at ten recently launched cars that are all vying for your cash.

The Chevrolet Spark is amongst one of the least expensive small cars on the market today. It’s always difficult to design a pretty, tiny little car, but the Spark has packed enough personality and features in it to be a subcompact well worth looking at. Inside, it’s all very clean and simple, with sculpted flourishes that forgive the low rent plastics used. It’s not a sporty drive, but the limited grip makes it a real hoot to thrash about in urban environments. Range starts R103 300.

Some cars just have that cheeky “go on, try me” look about them and the Renault Clio is one of them. This five-door hatch oozes more Gallic charm than warm Camembert. The famous Renault logo takes centre stage on the radiator grille, behind which lays its thrumming heart - a tiny but lusty 898cc turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, returning 4.4l/100km on the combined cycle. She handles responsively and feels more than capable. It doesn’t come cheap, but there’s so much to like. Range starts R149,900.

The Toyota Auris HSD Xs is mostly for numerologists. It’s about the numbers, you see. Power comes from a 1798cc petrol engine, which produces 73kW and adds to that the 60kW from its electric motor. Torque of 207Nm from the electric engine adds to the petrol’s 142Nm. So where are we going with this number-fest? How about fuel consumption of 3.8l/100km on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 85g/km? Now the car starts making some sense. Range starts R198 000.

Bakkies are still massive business in South Africa and that’s reflected in Isuzu assembling more than 20 derivatives at its Port Elizabeth plant. Is the Isuzu KB 240 LE 4x4 Double Cab any good? Inside, it’s updated and roomier than before. Ride quality and comfort has also been massively improved over the old model. It feels tougher than an anvil but is a bit outclassed by rivals but is still an honest to goodness bakkie worth a look. Range starts R218 900.

CAR REViEW

Page 87: The umhlanga 11th edition

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o. z a | 87

umhlangaCAR REViEW

The Ford Kuga Titanium model has a raft of clever tech, including wizardry that enables me to shout at the radio to turn it on. It manages to look good and it drives impressively once you work out how to start it. It’s a perfectly smooth and predictable car to drive and the diesel motor seems willing. No one takes them off-road, but it’s nice to know it can. The Kuga cossets its occupants – leaving you feeling unstressed after a long drive. Worthy spend this one. Range starts R262 193.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. Except when it’s an Audi A3 Sportback. Gone is the filling-loosening ride and nose-heavy handling, but it’s barely noticeably different to the model it replaced, but that doesn’t really matter, because the A3 is brilliant. Like a precious jewel wrapped in utilitarian drab, it’s a tour de force of quality engineering and dynamic handling. The interior is about as blingy as a monks’ wardrobe, but oh so beautifully made. Range starts R283 000.

The CR-V Comfort FWD (Front Wheel Drive) has a willing 2.0 i-VTEC petrol engine with a 6-Speed Manual transmission. Before you write it off because it’s only has two driven wheels, very few will buy this car for its off road ability. It’s about functional family motoring. Comfortable and easy to drive, there is an immense boot and loads of cabin space. The standard six-speed manual gearbox has a sweet shift and gives it long legs for comfortable driving. Range starts R306 800.

In an earlier editorial, I called the Suzuki Grand Vitara I tested a competent soft-roader. Suzuki South Africa PR begged to differ and suggested I take the car back to mete out serious off-road treatment to discover how competent the car was in the rough stuff. Off-road ability was surprisingly good - thick power-sapping sand couldn’t bog the car down and ground-clearance was impressive. What it may lack in terms of on-road manners is compensated by its good build quality and willing 2.4-litre VVT petrol engine. Range starts R307 900.

Many buyers of ‘crossovers’ want economy combined with the SUV look, which is why the imposing Chevrolet Trailblazer 4x4 is here. Inside, there are chunky Tonka Toy shapes and curves everywhere, but some of the plastics are a bit hard and scratchy. It’s huge inside, with plenty of room for a big family. The smooth six-speed automatic is responsive and relaxing, but don’t hustle it around corners too aggressively and it will give you balanced handling.. Range starts R373 200.

The Lexus IS 350 gets the 3.5 litre and the maddest version of the ‘corporate face’. The profile is all aggressive origami and is generally well resolved. The rear-wheels are driven through an eight-speed automatic gearbox with Eco, Sport and Normal drive modes. Smooth and composed, it absorbs bumps well and remains taught when pushed hard – with the steering feel better than any previous Lexus. It will soon start becoming a bit of a nuisance for its German rivals. Range starts R449 000.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:• An empty soda can• Blown-up balloon• A head of hair

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Place the can on its side on a flat smooth surface like a table or a smooth floor. 2. Rub the blown up balloon back and forth through your hair really fast.3. Now the fun part - Hold the balloon close to the can without actually touching the can. The can will start to roll towards the balloon without you even touching it!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?This works a lot like our bending water experiment. When you rub the balloon through your hair, invisible electrons (with a negative charge) build up on the surface of the balloon. This is called static electricity, which means "non-moving electricity" The electrons have the power to pull very light objects (with a positive charge) toward them - like the soda can. tel : 032 946 2096 | fax: 032 946 2104

summer!

HEALTH

the 10 things I hate about

1. The sun comes up way too early and goes down way too late. I mean, who would want to wake up and hit the surf, go for a run, take the dog for a walk and even go and pump some iron? The extra hours just make for so much more to do in a day!

2. The choices in fruit and vegetable make more sense. You can eat at a braai as many times a week as you want — you get to eat “clean” food and drink as much water as you want.

3. The suntan just looks good! Obviously the roasted lobster look won’t be cool, but if you hate summer you will be fine. Stick to the early mornings and evenings and watch that happy hue grow!

4. Summer means holidays and that means time-off for you and the family.

5. The beach is available and ready for your visit.

6. The afternoon summer storm and the fact everything cools down — the evenings are fresh and you are ready to take on the world.

7. Sports events abound! Take a trip to try these out.

8. Summer clothing ranges are always new and fresh.

9. Holidays — did I mention Holidays!?

10. Summer means a new year and a new you!

After checking this list out, I really cannot deny that we are incredibly lucky and that we live in one of the most temperate climates in the world. Now is the ideal time for change. Make sure, however, that you stick to it all year round. We have a habit of setting our goals based on fickle designs and aims. Make a choice based on what you need and require. Be aware that setting a goal by starting next Monday, or in the New Year, is a convenient excuse and that starting now could be the best way for you. Winter is just a season that in KZN- or even SA-terms is relative. I have great mates in Europe and North America that train all year round.

Set a goal like running a half-marathon, enter a warrior challenge, do a fun bike ride, surf-ski, join an authentic fitness challenge or even a company-wide competition. Make that sure you have something that is fun and enjoyable for all the family or friends. Find out where great organic eateries are and embrace the idea that healthy eating is no longer boring! JUST MAKE THAT CHOICE!

I love Sage, Barry the Baker and Salt to name but a few fantastic places for delicious, but healthy eating.

Look out for our New Year challenges coming to a Flux near you!
