THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
NEWSLETTER “Serve, Teach, and Love As We Grow In Faith”
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SEPTEMBER 2014
I wrote the following article shortly after I arrived at Black River Falls UMC, over eight years ago. I chose to resurrect it here for two reasons; 1) the message to the church, to this church, is timeless, and 2) it is a good re-
minder of not only who we are as the body of Christ in this place but how we are to be the body of Christ as well.
Practice, Practice, Practice!
In the book of Acts, we learn that the members of the early Christian Church were known for their enthusiasm for gathering together as community often, for sharing their possessions in common, for their faithful obedience to the teachings of the apostles, for fellowship (as if they
were truly a family), and for praying together and sharing communion. They were truly “practicing” Christians; they were committed to their faith and, as a result, to each other. They loved to be together, and they cele-brated their community with joyful, generous hearts. (Acts 2:42-47) What a wonderful picture of the church functioning as the body of Christ. But can we be that church? Can we:
Be devoted to our relationship as a community? Sincerely desire to have our lives guided by the instruction of God’s Word? Share deeply in each other’s needs and carry one another’s burdens? Seek to be the Body of Christ in our world by caring for the poor and seeking justice for the op-
pressed? Spend time in prayer for one another and for the needs of our world? Share our resources for the good of the church and others with less than we have? Meet regularly in God’s house for worship and to share meals and fellowship? Recognize and experience God’s amazing presence among us?
This may seem like a challenging list but truth is, we are already practicing each to some degree. Are we the church in Acts? No, but we can be. All we need do to truly become the Body of Christ we are called to be is to practice our commitment to God and to Jesus Christ. How?
1. Be devoted to your relationship to the BRFUMC community. 2. Allow God’s Word to guide your life—seek God’s guidance through prayer, worship, and study. (This
fall the church will be offering four small group experiences. This is a good time and a good opportu-nity to get to know God, yourself and other members of your church family.)
3. When you learn that someone in the church has a need, actively participate in filling that need, whether the need is physical, emotional or spiritual.
4. Open your eyes and your heart to the poor and the oppressed. 5. Pray ~ for others in the church ~ for yourself ~ for your church ~ for this community. 6. Share what you have for God’s good remembering that all that you have has been given you by a
generous, gracious God. 7. Go to church regularly. Not just for worship but to support the ministries of your church, to deepen
your understanding of the ministries of the church, and to fellowship with your church family. (September 9th and 10th you will have the opportunity to learn more about the ministries of your church and to fellowship when Doug Anderson is with us to take us Beyond the Barrier, and to show us how to grow in discipleship.)
Commitment is not something we are born with; it takes practice. And isn’t commitment to your faith and church a commitment worth practicing? You have nothing to lose and your life and the life of your church to gain.
May God Bless Us as we Continue the Journey ~
Pastor Kathy

United Methodist Women News Faith * Hope *Love in Action
Coming Events September 8th 6:00 p.m. General Meeting with guest speaker, Jan Bruder; Devotions, Amy Willette; Book Re-
view, Carol Anderson; Hostess, Luane Meyer and Karen Pennekamp.
September 20th is the Heartland District Annual Gathering at the Spencer UMC from 9-3. Registration is due 9-
15-14 and will be $12. I have posted some registration forms on the kiosk. Plan to turn in your registration at the
general meeting on the 8th. Let’s have several car loads of ladies attend this event as it may be the last Heartland
District Annual Gathering due to redistricting by the UMC.
October 17-18 Wisconsin Annual Gathering at Asbury UMC in Madison. More about this later.
October 26th—Breakfast Sweets Fundraiser.
Everyone is welcome to our meeting on September 8th, and I encourage our UMW members to invite a guest too. Jan
Bruder of Brighter Tomorrows in Sparta is a very interesting young woman who will speak about domestic violence.
Carol Anderson and Carol Hornby attended the Overview Day of Mission u. This would have been a great year to attend
the 4 day Mission u as the study leaders were really amazing. There really is nothing comparable to a day of learning,
worship, fellowship, and communion with other United Methodist Women.
Response: Once again the September issue of Response is full of wonderful articles. Read the Bible on page 8 and
study Harriet Jane Olson’s article “Responsively Yours” will challenge you to think about what our responsibility is to
society as Christian women through her equation Love = Charity and Justice. BrightLights shares what other UMW
groups across the nation do to raise money, serve others, mission projects, and much more. Other articles that would
well worth your time to read are: “A Cornerstone of Mission in Tampa”, p. 19; “Rebuilding Liberia”, p. 24; “A Safety
Net for Homeless Teens”; and “ Ministries of Hospitality on the U.S. Border” p. 37. A copy of Response can be found
on the bookshelves by the Reading Program books in the former choir room.
Listen: PROCLAIM THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR: “Why does United Methodist Women take posi-
tions on social justice issues? Homelessness, hunger, poverty, racism, illiteracy, economic justice, war and peace, health
care for children, international conflicts—the list of national and global issues with which United Methodist Women has
been involved over the years seems endless.
“In the New Testament, because ‘God so loved the world, ‘God sent Jesus Christ. Jesus’ mission was undoubt-
edly a controversial one. It was a challenge to the social order, proclaiming God’s reign as the establishment of a new
set of human relationships. Jesus aligned himself with the captive, the blind, the oppressed, the poor, the widowed and
the weak. Jesus came to proclaim the ‘year of the Lord’s favor’ (Luke 4:16-19). The year of the Lord’s favor, or the
year of the Jubilee, that Jesus was proclaiming is nothing less than a call for social justice, a challenge to social struc-
tures, and a call for liberation. ” From “Why Should I Get Involved in Social Issues?”

September 7 marks the first day of Sunday School!!!!! Our church will be filled with the sounds of CHILDREN … laughing, crying, eating, praying, singing …are you ready? I AM!!!!! Matthew 19:14: But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” Take a minute and read this Bible verse . . . I mean really read it. What does it mean to you? How would you explain it to someone? I chose this Bible verse to represent what our Sunday School program is about. Some kiddos are just learning about Jesus’ love and His stories, whereas others want to learn more about Jesus in depth. That’s where our Sunday School Team comes in — to reinforce what you are teaching your kiddo at home about Jesus. Looking forward to a great year!
Parent letters and Sunday School registrations have been mailed out. If you received one, please fill it out
and bring it with you to Sunday School. If you did not receive one, please contact Beth Bue at 715-284-7494
Check your calendars to see if you are available for our awesome Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, September 7, at 10:00 a.m.!! Parents are welcome and needed for this event! If you have a Facebook account, go to BRFUMC Sunday School page and “like” it. Then, wait patiently ‘til the hunt day!

growth.

Backpack Project
The UMC Mission Outreach Committee held its second Back-pack Project event on Saturday, August 16th, in the Fellowship Hall. This year the committee decided to double the number of students receiving assistance with backpacks and school sup-plies from last year’s 50 to 100. The committee held a brat sale at Burnstad’s Brat Barn and also applied for and received a Community Grant from Wal-Mart to raise money for the pro-ject. Working with Jackson County Human Services to reach the neediest elementary children in our community, we hosted children and families for the event. Besides receiving a back-
pack and school supplies, children also received a Christian story or activity book, a schedule of our church’s activities, and families received a snack and had a chance to visit with church members helping with the event. What we hadn’t counted on was the need for assistance for middle and high school students. On Sunday, Au-gust 17th, I spoke to the congregation asking for help in serving students at this age. The committee received almost $1400 in donations allowing our committee to provide backpacks and school supplies for those stu-dents, as well as to provide some other supplies to the elementary schools that we had chosen not to buy be-fore because of the cost. The committee wants to thank you so much for your kindness, your generosity, and your passion to help oth-ers so that the children of this community can feel loved and supported by us all. Thank you again.

Van Etta Library
BOOK REVIEW
Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler
The author of this book, Nickolas Butler, was raised in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as was his wife,
and they lived in Minneapolis for a while before moving back to the Eau Claire area. Butler richly and
accurately portrays the American heartland by making the beauty of the Wisconsin farmland a character
in this story. Four male friends-all born and raised in a small Wisconsin town Butler calls Little Wing-are
now men, coming into their own or struggling to do so. They are all brought together again for a wedding
and the lifelong bonds are still strong, but there are stresses among the friends and between husband and
wives. There is heartbreak, but also hope healing and heroism as these memorable people learn the true
meaning of adult friendship and love.
Butler had me loving this book after the first chapter and I certainly hope he is working on an-
other fiction story! You will recognize landmarks in the Eau Claire area that he refers to—remember
Wagner’s 40 Lanes, London Square Mall? The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Osseo and Altoona are all
mentioned in this story, too. I wonder if Little Wing is really Fall Creek, Altoona, Osseo or Elk Mound.
He does refer to the Coffee Cup Café that is in Little Wing—does anyone know if that really existed in
one of these small towns?
This book was purchased with memorial monies to the Van Etta Library from Jean Lovlien in
memory of Debra (Peterson) Behr.

Online
Shoppers!!!
Just a reminder about a program that is just like the scrip card program, where each retailer will give back to the church a percentage of each sale they make. And, just like the scrip program, there is no cost to those who shop through www.umcmarket.org. All you have to do is go to the website, sign up, then download the “browser app.” Then every time you shop online at one of the 1000 retailers in the program, our church will receive from 1.5% to 41% of the sale, depending on the store. What a great way to help our church meet its budget! If all of us in church who shop online sign up with um-cmarket.org, our church would not have to run another stewardship campaign!!
