Pakistan Science Foundation arranged Water Expo (Water at the Heart of Science) in the Department of Water Management, UAP during May 25-31, 2014. Main objective of the Expo was promotion and popularization of science among young students. Prof. Dr. Zahoor A. Swati, Vice Chancellor, UAP inaugurated the event.

Prof. Dr. M. Jamal Khan, Chairman Department of Water Management delivered a presentation on “Water Issues and Prospects” on this occasion.

Achievements/Activities

The Minister for Agriculture, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mr. Ikramullah Khan Gandapur inaugurated the Livestock Business Facilitation Desk of the Dairy Science Park at the KP Chamber of Commerce & Industries, Peshawar on June 21, 2014. Besides others, the event was attended by Mr. Zahidullah Shinwari, President KPCCI and Prof. Dr. M. Subhan Qureshi, Dean, Faculty of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences, UAP.

The Minister appreciated the progress made under the Qureshi highlighted the importance of the Desk as a Dairy Science Park and assured full cooperation. Prof. model for supporting the provincial economy.

Wheat varieties "Atta Habib" and "Siran-2010" released by the University of Agriculture, Peshawar in 2010 maintained their supremacy as disease resistant and high yielding varieties again in crop season 2013-14.

Prof. Dr. Zahoor A. Swati, Vice Chancellor UAP has provided leadership in development of genetically diversified wheat germplasm. In an attempt to develop improved wheat varieties with durable resistance against leaf and stripe rusts, development and release of wheat varieties, "Siran-2010" and "Atta-Habib" are his significant achievements. These varieties are now occupying a major part of the wheat growing areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A special meeting of the management committee of Livestock Business Facilitation Desk of Dairy Science Park, chaired by Mr. Arif Yousaf, Special Assistant to Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was held at Peshawar on June 07, 2014.

Besides others, the meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. M. Subhan Qureshi, Dean, Faculty of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences, UAP; Mr. Kamran Khan, CEO, LBF Desk and Mr. Zafar Paracha, University Feed Mill partner. Prof. Qureshi briefed the committee on the background of Dairy Science Park.

A field inspection day was organized by the Society of Young Agronomists (SOYA), Department of Agronomy, the University of Agriculture, Peshawar on April 10, 2014. Dean, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal and Chairman, Department of Agronomy, Prof. Dr. Bashir Ahmad inaugurated the event. Faculty and students attended the event.

Agriculture, Peshawar alongwith a group of Ph.D and M.Sc (Hons) students of the department visited a model site on farmer farm constructed by NARC in Fateh Jang during their study tour on May 29, 2014.

The Accreditation Inspection Committee of Higher Education Commission headed by Mr. Naseer Alam, Secretary, National Agriculture Education Accreditation Council carried out on-site visit to the Departments of Agronomy, Horticulture and Soil & Environmental Sciences of UAP Amir Muhammad Khan Campus, Mardan on April 24, 2014 for accreditation of their degree programmes.

The Committee did holistic review of the resources, and financial resources earmarked for the degree facilities and critically reviewed the human, physical programmes.

Dr. Asad Jan, Associate Professor, Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (IBGE), UAP attended a three week international training course on “Contemporary Approaches to Genetic Resources Conservation and Use” during April 7-25, 2014 in Wageningen, the Netherlands. The course covered the areas of current perspectives, concepts and strategies regarding conservation and use of genetic resources, the history and contents of international agreements.

stPacific Weed Science Society Conference in Bandung, Indonesia and 1 African International Allelopathy Congress in Sousse, Tunisia in February 2014. These visits were sponsored by HEC, PSF and partially by the UK government.

Dr. Khan is working on his 3-year research project on Allelopathy of weeds funded by HEC.

Mr. Rizwan Ahmad, Director Planning & Development, the University of Agriculture, Peshawar attended a 5-day Leadership Training Programme held at Nottingham University, UK during March 10-15, 2014 jointly sponsored by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and British Council for a group of 19 senior administrators of different universities of the country. During his stay in UK, he initiated an MoU with the University of Nottingham. On his return, Mr. Rizwan organized a cascading session on April 4, 2014 for the administrative staff of UAP and shared his experiences with them.
