be served to you including salad, vegetables, rolls, a holiday dessert, and coffee or tea. The two main
meal selections are either Chicken Normandy (breast with apple & cranberry stuffing) or Beef Tender-
loin with mushroom burgundy sauce. We will need to know which meal selection (chicken or beef) that
you prefer when you sign up.
To sign up for the luncheon, please fill out the reservation form included in this newsletter and send it
with your payment to Bev Brockett. We have held the cost of the meal to $25.00 per person. Bev must
receive your completed form & payment by Wednesday December 3rd in order to give O’Neil House a
final count of the meal selections. O’Neil House can only seat a maximum of 50 people, so be sure to
send in your form as soon as possible to help ensure your place at the festivities.
After lunch, the Bridge players are encouraged to stay to play cards until 5PM. If you intend to play
Bridge, please check the last line on the reservation form so we have a count.
Parking & Directions: Complimentary valet service is provided. Pull into the front courtyard at O’Neil
House off W Exchange Street and wait for the valet. There is no parking at the house, so please do not
park your car yourself.
The O’Neil House is a few blocks west of Our Lady of the

Women’s Club News and Notes
Former UAWC Carolyn Frye Ryan passed away on October 13, 2014. Carolyn graduated
from The University of Cincinnati and was a Registered Nurse for many years. She was an
avid musical lover and vocalist, and a member of Tuesday Musical Association. Carolyn
served as president of our club from 1988-90 and again in 1995-96. She was very active in
book review and gourmet dinners, and a vital force in Akron musical and arts organizations.
She will be sadly missed.
Note: If you have any news regarding our members such as illnesses, births, or deaths,
please call our Corresponding Secretary, Barbara Clark, at (330) 794-1129 or e-mail

it’s so pleasant and we don’t have to move—we can discuss the book right there. Lunch selec-

Our November meeting is being held on December 2nd, the first Tuesday in December, due

We are discussing The Monuments Men by Robert M. Edsel: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and
the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. Should be interesting—it received almost five full stars on
the Amazon.com reviews.

Hiking
Chair: Leslie Bain (330) 658-1965 / (330) 819-2846 [email protected]
Our 2014 organized hiking season has come to a close. I want to
thank all who came and participated in this year’s walks. There really
is no good way to summarize all the varied experiences we had. We
are truly blessed with wonderful places to walk, and you all gave so
much from gourmet treats to nature insights. Keep walking during
the winter and next spring we’ll reunite for another great season.
I’ve included below three favorite selections that you might enjoy.
Leslie Bain, Hiking Group Chair
Hiking pictures submitted by Carolyn Cox.
“ For someone who walks regularly, their body is better
able to deliver oxygen to all systems, including the brain,
because they’ve improved their cardiovascular function.
Not surprisingly, regular walkers report better mental
clarity and ability to focus. Creativity is enhanced because
walkers have the ability to relax their mind and let it wan-
der around while they’re walking. Outdoor strollers can
have the benefit of beautiful scenery as well as just seeing
things from a different perspective, which stimulates crea-
tive thought and the imagination. Whether you want to
improve your body, your mind or both, the benefits of
walking should encourage you to make the time to do it."
- Mental Benefits of Walking, Creating a Good Life
"“People need wild places. Whether or not we think
we do, we do. We need to be able to taste grace and
know again that we desire it. We need to experience
a landscape that is timeless, whose agenda moves at
the pace of speciation and glaciers. To be surround-
ed by a singing, mating, howling commotion of other
species, all of which love their lives as much as we do
ours, and none of which could possibly care less
about us in our place. It reminds us that our plans
are small and somewhat absurd. It reminds us why,
in those cases in which our plans might influence
many future generations, we ought to choose careful-
ly. Looking out on a clean plank of planet earth, we
can get shaken right down to the bone by the bronze-
eyed possibility of lives that are not our own."
- Barbara Klingsolver
“As I went walking
That ribbon of highway
I saw above me
The endless skyway
I saw below me
The lonesome valley
This land was made for you and me."
- Woody Guthrie, This Land is Your Land
