RESEARCH STATEMENT
Since I completed my PhD in 1982, my research has consistently focused on developing and
testing theoretical models that explain the effectiveness of health care organizations. To that
end, I have been the Principal Investigator on 5 multidisciplinary R01 grants – 3 from the
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and 2 from the National Institute of
Nursing Research (NINR). My research teams have introduced both conceptual and
methodological innovations to nursing and health services research. After completing work on
my last AHRQ grant (which evaluated the impact of California’s minimum nurse staffing
legislation on quality of care, hospital financial performance and the delivery of uncompensated
care), I submitted an unsuccessful competitive continuation of that grant, which stimulated a
reassessment of my research goals for the rest of my career. Although I had always had a
significant research mentoring role, it was balanced with my role as a Principal Investigator. I
then decided that I would no longer pursue active funding as a Principal Investigator, but rather
that the major thrust of my research activities would be in promoting the development of others’
research, primarily (although not exclusively) junior tenure-track faculty not only at UNC-CH
SON but at other universities as well.
TEACHING STATEMENT
My content expertise in teaching is in organization theory and the understanding, both
conceptually and methodologically, of how to evaluate macro-level quality of care in the United
States health system. Students’ understanding of organization theory, as a discipline, is
imperative if they are to place their research in the appropriate context to improve health care
organizations and systems. Similarly, students need to be familiar with macro-level quality issues
affecting the US health care system, such as access to care, value, efficiency and cost
effectiveness, racial disparities and emerging delivery methods. As well, students need
substantial grounding in advanced research methods that are necessary to untangle the
complicated causal connections underlying the relationships contributing to health care quality.
Thus, it has been my pleasure, since I came to UNC-CH to be able to offer N928: Organization
37
Theory and N933: Health Care Quality and Patient Outcomes: Conceptual and Empirical
Approaches.
My approach to pedagogy is one of challenge and support: Challenge students to go beyond
their comfort level in thinking deeply and creatively to answer the underlying questions of “why”
and “how” while simultaneously providing a supportive atmosphere in the classroom where
students can focus on thinking and not on the need to be “right.”
SERVICE STATEMENT
I believe that “giving back” is not only a responsibility of the engaged scholar, but also an
opportunity to participate in activities that have the potential to improve the organization of
which one is a member. With my appointment in July 2015 as Director of PhD and PostDoctoral
programs, I am in an ideal position in that leadership role to work with both faculty and students
to bring program enhancements to those programs.
