1955

The idea of a humanities program for the university is initiated by Dean Tomas Fonacier.

Humanities I, “Introduction to the Arts,” is first taught by Dr. Albert Hayes, from the University of Chicago. Apprenticing with him are Virginia R. Moreno, Leticia Ramos, Ester Madrid, Ricaredo Demetillo, and Aurelio Estanislao.

1960

The English Department splits into three and the Department of Humanities and Philippine Institutions is one of the new departments formed, with Prof. Leopoldo Yabes as its first chair.

The College of Liberal Arts is restructured into the College of Arts and Sciences and the departments are abolished but retained as “disciplines.” Dr. Dionisia Rola is the first chair of the Discipline of Humanities.

1963

Under Prof. Ricaredo Demetillo, three syllabi are instituted: two for the visual arts and one for music.

The CAS departments are restored. Under Prof. Virginia Moreno, the first Five-Year Development Plan for the department is drawn up.

1966

The A.B. Humanities degree is instituted. It is an art history program offering three areas of concentration: Western Art, Eastern Art, and Music.

The Department of Humanities and Philippine Institutions is reorganized into two separate units: the Department of Humanities and the Department of Filipino and Philippine Literature. The first chair of the Department of Humanities, Dr. Eliseo Pajaro, is followed by Prof. Francisco Arcellana.

1974

A new Humanities program is instituted—A.B. Humanities (Type B) which allows students to choose from four disciplines: Humanities, History, Comparative Literature, and Philosophy.

The M.A. Art History degree is instituted, as well as fourteen new courses in Philippine Art.

1978

Mr. Felipe de Leon Jr. is elected chair. The years that follow show a gradual shift away from the emphasis on a Euro-American artistic experience to that of other peoples of the world especially the Asian and Filipino orientation.

The Humanities Major’s Club changes its name to “Sangkamalayan.”

1985

Prof. Frances F. Morillo is elected chair. During her term, core courses from the department and electives are increased.

Prof. Brenda V. Fajardo is elected chair. During her tenure, the department’s name is changed from Department of Humanities to Department of Art Studies.

The department publishes Art, Man & Society.

1990

1991

The M.A. Art Studies (Art Theory and Criticism) degree program is approved. New courses in the areas of museology, museum studies, and gender studies are instituted.

Prof. Alice G. Guillermo is elected chair. The goal of the department is the systematization of studies in Philippine art and foregrounding the arts’ powerful influence in the shaping and transformation of society towards human goals.

The Art Studies Journal containing faculty research and scholarly writings comes out.

1992

1994

Ang Sining sa Kasaysayang Filipino is published.

Prof. Norma A. Respicio is elected chair. The undergraduate programs undergo substantial revisions, with core courses made uniform and geared towards a firmer grounding in the art studies discipline.

Two new graduate courses in Museum Studies are instituted in preparation for the proposed Diploma in Museum Studies. Asian Art is also strengthened as an area of faculty expertise.

1997 Art and Society is launched. It includes new chapters devoted to photography, dance, theater and film, thus expanding the range of art forms and theoretical approaches to the study of art.

Prof. Patrick D. Flores is elected chair. The proposal for a Diploma in Museum Studies is revised into another area of specialization in the M.A. Art Studies program. From national conferences to international publications, the department faculty participates in the shaping of policies, ideas, and prospects.

1998 The department launches Sining at Lipunan, a new Filipino textbook on the humanities, an affirmation of the department’s commitment to propagate knowledge of the Humanities using the national language.

The faculty administers the Training Workshop for Trainors of Teachers of the Humanities (Arts). This is followed by the publication of Humanities: Art & Society Handbook, and the preparation of an Instructional Kit.

UP President Emil Javier approves the institution of Museum Studies as a new area of concentration in the M.A. Art Studies Program (major in Museum Studies).

2006

The department offers Art Studies 1 (Art and Society) and Art Studies 2 (Art Around Us), the department’s approved courses under the Revitalized General Education Program (RGEP).

Prof. Elena R. Mirano—now Dean of the College of Arts and Letters—is elected chair. Major revisions are undertaken in three academic programs in the undergraduate level.
