TheUniversity’scommitmenttotheliberalarts,tothecom-plementarynatureoffaithandreason,andtothefunda-mentalimportanceofintegrityandhonorisgroundedinitsmottofromPsalm133:Ecce quam bonum et quam iucundum habitare fratres in unum(“Beholdhowgoodandpleasantitiswhenkindredlivetogetherinunity”).Anditfindsfullexpression
inthequalityandpassionofthefaculty.Theyarelead-ingscholarsandresearchersintheirfieldswithanabidingcommitmenttoteaching,andintheclosecommunitythatisSewaneetheydevelopextraordinarilyrichandenduringrelationshipswiththeirstudentsthattranscendbothplaceandtime.
Theserelationships—persontoperson,aswellastothespecialplacethatisSewanee—havesustainedtheUniversi-tyoftheSouthsinceitsfoundingin1857.Theyhavegivenrisetouniqueandcherishedtraditionsthatcontinuefromgenerationtogeneration,linkingstudentsandalumniincommonaffectionfortheUniversity.Mostimportantly,theyhaveprovidedawellspringofinstitutionalachievementfromwhichSewaneelooksconfidentlytoitsfuture.

History
TheUniversityoftheSouthhastakentheopportunityoverthepastdozenyearstolookbackonadistinctive
historyoftrialandtriumph,includingmarkingboththe150thanniversaryofitsoriginalfoundingin1857andthatofitssuccessfulsecondfoundingadecadelateraftertheCivilWarwhentheoriginalresourcesoftheUniversityhadbeenlost.ThesecondfoundersovercamemanychallengestofinallyopentheUniversi-ty’sdoorsin1868.
Inthemidstof–andinresponseto–thesocial,cultural,andpoliticalcrisispromptedbytheimpassionedandincreasinglyviolentconflictoverthefutureofslaveryintheUnit-edStates,thefirstfoundingoftheUniversitywasledbyEpiscopalclergyandlaydelegatesfromAlabama,Arkansas,Florida,Georgia,Louisiana,Mississippi,NorthCarolina,SouthCarolina,Tennessee,andTexas.OnJuly4,1857,theymetatLookoutMountainnearChattanooga,Tennessee,tonametheUniversity’sfirstBoardofTrustees.OnJan.6,1858,auniversitycharterwasgranted

bytheStateofTennessee.TheTrusteesselectedasiteinSewanee,atoptheCumberlandPlateaubetweenChatta-noogaandNashville,andlocallandownersandtheSewaneeMiningCompanydonatednearly10,000acresfortheenterprise.TheseearlyeffortsledtotheceremoniallayingofthecornerstoneinSewaneeonOct.10,1860.

ThesecondfoundingwaslaunchedintheaftermathoftheCivilWar,thepoliticalandmilitarydestructionoftheConfederacy,thecollapseoftheslaveholdingsocietyandliberationofnearlyfourmillionenslavedAfricanAmer-icans.In1866,theRt.Rev.CharlesToddQuintard,thesecondbishopofTennesseeandtheUniversity’scom-missionerofbuildingsandlands,returnedtothecampusandformallyre-establishedtheUniversity.WithfinancialhelpfromEpiscopalsupportersinAmericaandAnglicanparishesinEngland,andwithbooksdonatedbyOxfordandCambridgeuniversities,theUniversityoftheSouthre-emerged.ThefirstOpeningConvocationonSept.18,1868,wasattendedbyninestudentsandfourfacultymembers.
RecoveringfromReconstructionfollowingtheCivilWar,theUniversityexperiencedsteadygrowthandofferedprofessionaleducationinareasincludingengineering,law,andmedicineuntil1909,whenthosedepartmentswereclosed.RemainingweretheUniversity’sbasicdepartments:apreparatoryschool,acollege,andaseminary.
Successfulathleticteamsandathrivingculturallifeattheturnofthe20thcenturytestifiedtoSewanee’semergence
amongmainstreamcollegesanduniversities.In1891,royalpurplewasadoptedastheschoolcolor,andSewaneeplayeditsfirstintercollegiatefootballgame.The1899footballteamwasundefeated,winning12straightgames—includingfivegamesduringasix-day,3,000-mileroadtrip.
TheUniversityshoredupitsailingfinances,undertookmuch-neededrenovations,andemergedfromtheerasoftheGreatDepressionandWorldWarIIwell-equippedandpreparedtoenteritsgreatestperiodofgrowth.From1950to1970,theendowmentincreased,oldbuildingsunder-wentmajorrenovations,andmorenewbuildingswereconstructedineachofthesetwodecadesthaninpreviousUniversityhistory.
AfricanAmericanmenwereallowedtoapplytotheCollegein1961(thoughnoneenrolleduntil1963),andwom-enwereadmittedasfull-timestudentsin1969.Today’sfreshmanclassesareabouthalfwomenandincludediversestudentsfromaroundtheworld.In2019-20,Sewaneeismarkingthe50thanniversaryofthefirstclassofwomentomatriculateattheUniversitywithayearlongcelebration.

The Roberson Project on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation
LaunchedinJuly2016,theRobersonProjectonSlav-
ery,Race,andReconciliationattheUniversityoftheSouthisasix-yearinitiativewhosepurposesaretoinvestigatetheUniversity’sdeephistoricalentanglementswithslaveryandslavery’slegaciesandtoassistitscommunityindis-cerninghowitshouldrespondtothathistory.Ourproject’snamememorializesthelateProfessorofHistoryHoustonBryanRoberson(1958-2016),whowasthefirsttenuredAfricanAmericanfacultymemberatSewaneeandthefirsttomakeAfricanAmericanhistoryandculturethefocusofhisteach-ingandscholarship.TheRobersonProjectseekstohonorhisinspiringlegaciesatSewanee:thedevotion
torigorousteaching,thepursuitofscholarship,thededicationtosocialjustice,andthepersonalexampleofhighmoralcharacter.Indoingso,theRobersonProjectaimstohelpSewaneeconfrontourhistoryinordertoseekamorejustandequitablefutureforourbroadanddiversecommunity.
Nowinitsthirdyear,theRobersonProjecthaspursuedanexpan-siveagendaofarchivalresearch,curriculardevelopment,publicprogramming,andcivicengage-ment.Fromthestart,though,ithasapproacheditsworkasabranchofSewanee’scoreidentityandmissionasateaching-focusedinstitutionforundergraduateandseminaryeduca-tion.StudentsfromtheCollegeandtheSchoolofTheologyhavebeencentralparticipantsinitsresearch,
administrative,andprogrammingwork.Ourgeneralattitudetowardthesubjectofourinvestigationsandouroutreachalsohasbeenfun-damentallyeducationalinnature,seekingtoengageourcommunityofstudents,facultyandstaff,localresidents,andalumniinactiveconsiderationofthemostdifficultsubjectsandquestionsraisedbyourUniversity’shistory.
Amorecompleteunderstandingandrecognitionofthathistoryanditslegacieswillenabletheinsti-tutiontomeetitsobligationstoeducatestudentsandmembersofthiscommunitypastandfutureandtorealizeSewanee’spledgetobeaninclusiveuniversityofandforthediversecitizenryofthe21st-centurySouth.

UndercurrentVice-ChancellorJohnMcCardell,Sewaneehasstrengtheneditspositionamongthenation’sliberalartsuniversitiesandEpiscopalseminaries.Duringhistenure,SewaneehasenjoyedrecordapplicationstotheCollege,andundergraduateenrollmenthasgrownfromabout1,500tomorethan1,700students.Newacademicinitiatives,includingmajorsinneuroscienceandfinanceandacom-prehensiveOfficeofGlobalCitizenship,haveenhancedthecurriculum,extendedSewanee’sreach,andprovidedexpandedopportunitiesforresearchandinternships.
Inaddition,theUniversityhasreaffirmeditsgoalofmakinganexcellentcollegeeducationmoreaccessiblefor
moreofthenation’sbeststudents.InSeptember2019,theUniversityannouncedthatitwillmeetthefulldemonstrat-edneedofadmittedstudentswhoqualifyforfinancialaid,startingwiththefirst-yearstudentswhoarriveinfall2020.TheUniversity’sBoardofRegentshasmadeacommitmentthatbynolaterthanfall2026,theUniversitywillreturntomeetingthefullneedofallofitsundergraduatestudents.PreviouseffortsincludetheUniversity,in2011,reducingthecostofaSewaneeeducationby10percent;forseveralyearsafterthat,afour-yeartuitionfreezeappliedtoeachincomingclass.Togethertheseactionsrepresentastrongcommitmenttokeepingthecostofatop-qualitycollegeeducationasaffordableandpredictableaspossible.

The Domain of the University
TheUniversityoftheSouthcampuscomprises13,000acresknownastheDomain.Largelyundevelopedand
richinbiodiversity,thelandisintrinsictotheidentityandpurposeoftheUniversity,adistinctiveassetofferinganunparalleledoutdoorlaboratoryandboundlessrecre-ationalopportunities.Today,theUniversity’slandholdingsarethesecondlargestamonginstitutionsofhighereducationintheUnitedStates.OftheUniversity’s13,000acres,approximatelyone-third,alsoknownasthe“innerDo-main,”iscomposedofthecampus,businesses,residentialareas,andstudenthousing.Theremainingtwo-thirds,“thegreaterDomain,”ismanagedforresearch,teaching,recreation,andecosystemservicesbytheOfficeofEnvi-ronmentalStewardshipandSustainabilityforusebyallpartieswithintheUniversitycommunityandoutside.
TheDomainislocatedontheedgeofthesouthernCum-berlandPlateau,aregionknownforbothitsbiodiversityanditsoutdoorrecreationalofferings.Morethan1,100speciesofvascularplantshavebeendocumentedontheDomain,andclassofferingsallowstudentstoparticipate
inresearchandactivemanagementfocusedonbiologicalconservation.TheOfficeofEnvironmentalStewardshipandSustainabilitymaintainsanoutdoorrecreationalsystemthatisunparalleledamongU.Scampuses.ThePerime-terTrailisthesignaturetrailoftheDomain,a22-mileloopthatcirclesmuchofthecampusandprovideshiking
andmountainbikingexperiencesthatareunmatchedintheregion.Sixteenlakesand10developedcampingareasgivestudentsam-pleopportunitiestoexplorethefurthestreachesoftheproperty,androckclimbingandboulderingopportunitiesaboundforstudentsandstaffalike.Thetrailnetworkspassthroughbothprotectedold-growthremnantforestaswellastheSewaneeDemonstrationForest,an
activelymanagedareawhereinnovativeforestmanagementandprescribedfireprogramscreateandenhancewildlifeandplantcommunities.
ThevillageofSewaneeisontheDomainandishometoapproximately2,500people;itisnotincorporatedbutismanagedbytheUniversity,whichprovidespoliceandfireprotection,andemergencymedicalservices.

TheSewaneeVillageisacriticalcomponenttothehealthandlongevityoftheUniversity.Avibrantvillage
willhelpusattractandretainhighqualityemployeesandstudents,willpromotetourism,andwillsupportahealthylocaleconomy.TheSewaneeVillageprojectisacollabora-tionbetweentheUniversityandtheSewaneecommunitytoreposition,redevelop,andrevitalizedowntown.
Traditions and Ethos
Sewaneeisaseriousacademicinstitutionandaclose-knitcommunitythathasevolvedtomeetthechanging
demandsofitsstudentsandtheworldaroundit.Italsoisaplacethatgathersstrengthfromitstraditions,fromthewearingoftheacademicgownand“tappingtheroof”tothequintessentialsmall-townFourthofJulycelebration.Thesecustoms,whichenrichtheexperienceatSewanee,emergefromitspastand,fromtimetotime,throughstudentandfacultyingenuity.
TheHonorCode,inexistenceinformallysincethe1870sandformallysince1913,definesSewanee’scommunityof
respect,trust,andtolerance,whichbringssecurityandfreedomtocampus.StudentscommittotheseidealsbysigningtheUniversity’sHonorCodeintheChapelatma-triculation.TheHonorCodeisatraditionthatismain-tainedbyanHonorCouncilelectedfromthestudentbodyincollaborationwiththefacultyandtheDeanofStudents’Office.
Thewearingofacademicgownsbyfaculty,andbyCollegeandSchoolofTheologystudentswhohaveattainedmem-bershipintheOrderoftheGownbasedontheiracademicstanding,isuniquelySewanee,anodtotheUniversity’shistorictiestoOxfordthatsymbolizestheinstitution’srespectforacademicendeavorandleadership.Thewearingofgownsisoptional,andstudentsandfacultyreadilyshedthemtopursueenvironmentalfieldstudiesontheDomain,collaborativeresearchinlaboratories,andstudyabroad.
ComprehensiveexaminationstakeninthesenioryearofundergraduatestudyconcludetheacademicexperienceatSewanee,andpromptstudentstosay,“I’mcomped,”aftercompletingrigorousoralorwrittenexamsintheirmajor.

academicachievement,fromBenedictScholarshipsforthebestenteringstudentstoalonglistofRhodesScholarsatgraduation.TheCollegeofArtsandSciencesoffersachal-lengingandstimulatingprogramintheliberalartswithanemphasisonmasteryoffundamentaldisciplines.Moreover,theacademicprogramdevelopstheintellectandcharacterofitsstudentsandpreparesthemforlivesofachievement,leadership,andservice.Thehighexpectationsplacedonstudentsarebalancedwiththefaculty’scommitmenttopersonalattentionandencouragement.Withoutquestion,allstudents,whatevertheirdiscipline,developtheabilitytoresearch,analyze,solveproblems,write,speak,andlisten.

AllSaints’ChapelisoperatedunderthecareoftheUniversitychancellor,andworshipisaccordingtothe
usageoftheEpiscopalChurch.TheministryofAllSaints’isecumenicalandopentoall.Thechapelalsoisagather-ingplaceforpubliceventsinthelifeoftheUniversityandcommunity.
Thechapelisstaffedbyachaplainelectedbythetrustees,anassociatechaplain,laychaplain,organist/choirmaster,assistantorganist,administrativeassistant,assistantforministry,andweddingcoordinator.ThemissionofAllSaints’istopromotespiritualwellnessinourcommunitythroughworship,love,andservice.MorningandEveningPrayerareofferedeachweekday,andthreeEucharistsarecelebratedonSunday.
Theadultformationprocess,knownasCatechumenate,isofferedweeklyforstudents,faculty,staff,andcommunitymembers.Thisprocessmayculminateinbaptism,receptionintotheEpiscopalChurch,renewalofbaptismalvows,or
confirmation.Aninformal“come-as-you-are”Eucharist,calledGrowinginGrace,isheldonSundayeveningsandotherinformalgatheringstakeplacethroughouttheweek.

izenscultivatingknowledge,resources,andrelationshipstoadvancetheeconomic,social,andenvironmentalwell-be-ingofitspartnercommunities.Theoffice’sprogrammingencompassescurricularandco-curricularprogrammingandtheintegrationofboth.Inaddition,theofficecollab-oratesandsupportsprogramsacrossthecampusthathaveacivicdimension,suchastheCommonBookprogramandtheRobersonProjectonSlavery,Race,andReconciliation.

Southfirstdreamedofagreatuniversityfortheirregion,anemphasisontheologicaleducationwasanessentialpartoftheirvision.In1872,thefirstSewanee-trainedpriestwasordained.By1878,theSchoolofTheologywasformallyorganizedasasemi-naryoftheEpiscopalChurch,withitsownfacultyandfacilities.In1894,WilliamPorch-erDuBose,describedaspossiblythegreatesttheologianthattheEpiscopalChurchintheUSAhasproduced,waselecteddeanoftheSchoolofTheology.Beginningin1937,asummergraduateprogramevolvedinresponsetothecallforfurthercontinuingeducationforclergy;in1975,thisbecametheAdvancedDegreesProgram,offeringdoctoralandpostgraduate-levelcoursesduringsummersessions.In2013,theprogramcenterforlayeducationwasexpandedandrenamedtheBeeckenCenter.
