BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ENGLISH WITH A CALIFORNIA PRELIMINARY SINGLE SUBJECT CREDENTIAL †The Bachelor of Arts in English with a Preliminary Single Subject Credential provides a rigorous education that prepares students for a career as a teacher of English at the middle and secondary school levels. The program stresses literary analysis, diversity, and critical thinking and written and oral communication skills through a rigorous curriculum of literature, composition, language and linguistics, and communication studies. This program prepares candidates for professional work as single subject teachers. Candidates are required to complete all required coursework as well as the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) to receive a credential.

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE WITH A CALIFORNIA PRELIMINARY SINGLE SUBJECT CREDENTIALThe Bachelor of Arts in Biological Science with a Preliminary Single Subject Credential prepares candidates for a career as a teacher at the middle and secondary school levels. The program stresses a foundation in biological science and its application. This program prepares candidates for professional work as single subject teachers in a changing cultural and economic environment. All candidates must take the CBEST or other basic skills option prior to admission and pass the examination before student teaching. CSET passage is also required before student teaching.

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT WITH A CALIFORNIA PRELIMINARY MULTIPLE SUBJECT CREDENTIALThe Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education with a California Preliminary Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential prepares candidates for a career as a teacher in preschool through and the early elementary grades. GRADUATE PROGRAMS

MASTER OF ARTS IN ACCOMPLISHED COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIPThis program is designed for teachers who wish to become National Board Certified and develop the leadership skills necessary to work collaboratively with school administrators to effect meaningful school change. An accomplished school leader is a teacher with National Board Certification who assumes a collaborative leadership role by serving on school committees, acting as a club sponsor, or team coach, or working with administrators as a change agent within the school. At the conclusion of the program, in addition to receiving a master of arts degree, candidates have an opportunity to submit their portfolios and take the exam required for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification process.

MASTER OF ARTS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING † The Master of Arts in Language Teaching and Learning is for practicing and potential teachers interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills, abilities, and authorization to teach English Language Learners. The program includes specializations for candidates interested in teaching in bilingual classrooms where the students’ language of origin is predominately Spanish. An additional specialization in Teaching and Learning in a Global Society is designed to provide non Spanish speaking candidates with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach diverse students.

THE MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING † (CORE COURSES ARE AVAILABLE 100 PERCENT ONLINE BUT ONLY SOME SPECIALIZATIONS ARE; SEE BELOW)The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree helps teachers enhance their skills, broaden their intellectual and professional understanding of educational theory and practice, and continue to grow as instructional leaders in K-12 settings.

Specializations in, autism, best practices, early childhood education, educational technology, National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) Leadership, reading, teacher leadership, and teaching and learning in a global society can be completed 100 percent online. Specializations in applied behavior analysis (ABA), early childhood special education, and special education are also available. The NBCT specialization is uniquely scheduled to align the NBPTS portfolio submission dates and serves as the thesis project for the MAT degree.

MASTER OF EDUCATION SPECIALIZING IN BEST PRACTICES (WITH A SINGLE OR MULTIPLE SUBJECT CREDENTIAL WITH BCLAD OPTION AND INTERN CREDENTIAL OPTION)Designed for the student committed to completing the requirements for a credential in multiple or single subject in the state of California with a graduate degree specializing in best practices. Courses for this degree meet the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) requirements for a preliminary credential and a master’s degree. It combines theory and practice to drive assessment and reflection as the basis for sound instructional decision making.

MASTER OF EDUCATION SPECIALIZING IN CROSS-CULTURAL TEACHING (WITH A SINGLE OR MULTIPLE SUBJECT CREDENTIAL WITH BCLAD OPTION AND INTERN CREDENTIAL OPTION) This degree is for students who are committed to being instructional leaders in the K-12 setting, and geared to providing candidates with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach the increasingly diverse students in our society. Courses meet the CTC requirements for a preliminary credential as well as meet the requirements for a master’s degree. The internship option provides valuable classroom experience and the opportunity to put theory into real-life practice.

MASTER OF EDUCATION IN TEACHING The Master of Education in Teaching degree was developed for practicing teachers who are currently working in a school district to complete their induction program. National University is able to partner with districts to combine a teacher’s work in the induction program with the University’s requirements for a master’s degree. Currently offered in offsite cohorts only, this program combines the work completed in the preliminary teaching credential, the district induction program, and the Professional Clear SB2042 credential requirements, with a particular focus on preparing teachers for National Board Certification.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN APPLIED SCHOOL LEADERSHIP (Offered in partnership with Santa Clara County Office of Education [SCCOE]) This program is offered in collaboration with the SCCOE “Leaders in Educational Administration Program” (L.E.A.P) and is comprised of six courses leading to the Preliminary Administrative Services (Tier I) Credential. Students must also take an additional six required National University courses for the completion of this degree.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION †In this program, students will gain expertise in matters related to educational leadership and develop the capabilities and personal characteristics essential for efficient school administration. This degree can be completed with or without a credential option for those pursuing a career in the nonpublic education sector. Only the courses in the program that finish the credential are not online

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATIONAL COUNSELING The Master of Science in Educational Counseling is aligned with national standards and prepares students for the position of school counselor. Graduates of this program generally seek employment as school counselors in K-12 school districts and must hold a PPSC credential for public school employment.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIPDeveloping leadership skills for students interested in becoming a school leader or administrator, this degree combines the five National Board Certified Teaching (NBCT) courses with five leadership courses from the Educational Administration program. Development of the NBCT portfolio serves as the thesis project. Adding three more courses within seven years may earn the student a preliminary administrator license.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN JUVENILE JUSTICE SPECIAL EDUCATIONThe Master of Science in Special Education with emphasis in Juvenile Justice is designed for educators and other professionals who want to become more knowledgeable about educational learning problems and teaching strategies to enhance performance of students in alternative educational settings, court school, or those who reside in juvenile hall.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGYThis program is aligned with national standards and prepares students for the position of school psychologist. Graduates of this program generally seek employment as a school psychologist in K-12 school districts and must hold a PPSP credential for public school employment.

Interns must have an offer of employment from an approved school district or non-public school that either has, or is willing to enter into, a partnership agreement with National University. The University Internship credential students meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Available special education internships include:

- University Internship Credential Program for Education Specialist: Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Disabilities

- University Internship Credential Program for Education Specialist: Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Disabilities with Concurrent Multiple or Single Subject Credential with BCLAD option

The emphasis of the professional preparation program is to move special educators beyond the functional aspects of teaching to more advanced knowledge and reflective thinking about their roles in providing effective instruction and an environment for student success.

TEACHER EDUCATION CREDENTIAL PROGRAMSIn these programs, you can earn the specific credential you need for various teaching environments. Earn a multiple subject credential to teach in a self-contained classroom, typically in grades K-12. The single subject credential authorizes the holder to teach in a departmentalized situation, typically at the junior high or high school level. The SB2042 multiple subjects credential and the single subject credential include an authorization to teach English language learners both in the general education classroom and in designated classes. CALIFORNIA READING CERTIFICATE † The California Reading Certificate authorizes the holder to assess student reading and provide reading instruction in response to those assessments. Reading Certificate holders are also authorized to develop, implement, and adapt the reading content curriculum and assist classroom teachers in these areas.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CERTIFICATE †This four-course program is designed to give students the teaching experience necessary to meet the unique needs of children from birth to age 8.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE †This will develop expertise in designing and conducting technology-facilitated instruction in K-12 technology coordination, site administration, home school and virtual school instruction, and online instruction in higher education.

NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE †This certificate is designed for any teacher who may already have a master’s degree, but would benefit by earning graduate credit for five NBCT courses that support them as they explore and develop the NBCT portfolio at any level: exploration only, as a pre-candidate, active candidate, or renewal candidate. National Board Certification serves teachers in K-12 schools and in nearly all subject areas.

MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHINGThe Master of Arts in Teaching degree helps those who already hold a Nevada teaching license enhance their skills, broaden their intellectual and professional understanding of educational theory and practice, and continue to grow as instructional leaders in K-12 settings. Specializations are offered in applied behavior analysis (ABA), autism, best practices, early childhood education, early childhood special education, educational technology, National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) Leadership, reading, special education, teacher leadership, and teaching and learning in a global society. The NBCT specialization is uniquely scheduled to align the NBPTS portfolio submission dates and serves as the thesis project for the MAT degree.

MASTER OF EDUCATION IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION WITH NEVADA LICENSURE This program with Nevada licensure is designed for students who seek to become instructional leaders in the elementary classroom setting.
