MESSAGE FROM
OUR MODERATOR
Giving Thanks!
Sometimes circumstances cause changes in the normal flow of family celebrations, espe-cially around the holidays. Work schedules are one of the main reasons for the shuffle. The fact that the Christmas holiday can fall on any day of the week, and Thanksgiving ALWAYS falls on Thursday, makes it difficult for those who work and/or travel.
Large families, such as mine, usually change plans several times during the year in an attempt to accommodate as many family members as possible. The usual compromise is for those who travel to come home for one holiday, but not both. Work schedules and requested time off making a big impact on which one to attend.
I once read that necessity is the mother of invention and creativity is the father (author unknown). Since my grand-son, Josh, who lives in Texas, could only come for Thanksgiving, my daughter Robin came up with a simple plan several years ago. She has a Thanksgiving Tree, decorated appropriately with holly berries, miniature pumpkins, and fall colored lights. Underneath the tree are “presents,” decorated boxes, each one labeled with something to be thankful for: Family, Health, Friends, Food, Holidays, Employment, Home. A wonderful way to remember what Thanksgiving is all about.
May we all take the time to make our own list of what we can be thankful for, especially the fact that we have freedom of worship, the best present of all.

ADVENT BEGINS
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1
What if this Advent we opened
our hearts and prepared enough
room to receive not just the baby
sweet and mild in the manger, but
the man and ministry that
changed the world and has the
ability to change our lives?
Prepare, our Advent devotional, is available.
Contact Annie Galbreath if you have not received
your copy yet. Starting the first Sunday of Advent,
December 1, each five-minute devotion includes
scripture, a reflection, and a prayer.
This booklet is a daily, four-week resource to help
us hear God’s call to faithfulness in Jesus being
made flesh in our world. When we hear that call,
how do we hope and pray and change -- and live
differently?
