2012 SOUTH CAROLINA FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE 182 Intro Staff Players Review Records History Bowls Info the university The University of South Carolina is home to more than 200 years of history and tradition, rising from a single building in 1805 on what would become the heart of the campus, the Horseshoe. Today, the 11 buildings that make up the Horseshoe frame a lush lawn that is an irresistible gathering place for students, faculty, staff and alumni and the scene of many important university events. And while the Horseshoe will always be the symbol of Carolina’s proud tradition, the university’s presence and reach stretch across the Palmetto State, with baccalaureate universities in Aiken, Spartanburg (Upstate) and the sea islands (Beaufort and the gateway to Hilton Head), and two-year regional campuses in Allendale and Walterboro (Salkehatchie), Sumter, Lancaster and Union. Together, they are building economic prosperity; fulfilling the university’s mission of teaching, research and service to the state, and preparing future leaders in business, law, education, the arts, tourism, communications, medicine and the health sciences. The university has launched Carolina’s Promise, the state’s largest-ever capital campaign with a goal of $1 billion to benefit the institution’s eight campuses. The university’s Columbia campus has more than 324 degree programs through its 14 degree-granting colleges and schools. Students at the University of South Carolina have earned 588 national fellowships and scholarships valued at more than $16.6 million since 1994. University of South Carolina faculty generated $226.9 million in funding for outreach, research and training programs in fiscal year 2011. Five professors at the University of South Carolina have been named 2012 fellows in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society. USC’s faculty now includes 29 AAAS fellows. The University’s South Carolina Honors College was ranked the No. 1 honors college in the nation by the 2012 “Review of Fifty Public University Honors Programs.” The Darla Moore School of Business broke ground on its new building, which promises to transform business education at the university and serve as the front door to Innovista. The school is pursuing LEED Platinum and a Net-Zero rating for the new facility. Cocky’s Reading Express, USC’s innovative collegiate literacy program, has its own 22-passenger bus, thanks to a gift from BP. The bus will enable more students to participate and deliver more programs to S.C. elementary school children. USC’s Columbia campus, which boasts more than 6,500 trees, has earned a Tree Campus USA designation for the third consecutive year. The first class of students in the Gamecock Guarantee program graduated from Carolina in May. The program offers financial incentives and an academic support structure to low-income, first-generation college students from South Carolina. Political science professor Lee Walker has been named faculty principal for the new Carolina International House, a living-learning community for 180 American and international students that will open in fall 2012 in the Maxcy College residence hall. USC has been named a Bicycle-Friendly University at the bronze level by the League of American Bicyclists, the only school in South Carolina and the Southeastern Conference to receive the designation. A study on USC’s economic impact on South Carolina showed that the university’s eight campuses and alumni pump $4.1 billion into the state’s economy every year and that USC and its alumni support nearly 1 in every 37 jobs in South Carolina. UNIVERSITY HISTORY In 2001, the University celebrated the bicentennial of its charter, but 2005 also marked a watershed an- niversary: 200 years since the first classes began at South Carolina College, as it was then known. Caro- lina has endured the Civil War and Reconstruction, closings, and name changes. Permanently chartered in 1906 as the University of South Carolina, it grew throughout the 20th century and today is building its reputation as a cutting-edge research institution.

Harris Pastides was named the University of South Carolina’s 28th president on Aug. 1, 2008, after a decade of service as a professor, dean, and vice president. He was the first internal candidate to be elected President of the University of South Carolina in more than half a century. He has stressed leadership and civil discourse as primary values of the university and be-lieves that athletic and academic success go hand-in-hand in preparing student-athletes to be successful on the court, the playing field and in the classroom.

academic servicesWhenUniversityofSouthCarolinaAthleticsDirectorEricHyman talksabout “theDodie,” the$13millionstate-of-the-art facility thatopened in thespringof2010,he enthusiastically refers to it as, “the heart of the athletics department and the place wheretheebbandflowofstudent-athletes’daysarecentered.”

“The Dodie” is named for Dolores F.Anderson ofGreer, S.C.,whose philan-thropic gift helped fund the center for University of South Carolina student-athletes. Anderson is the widow of Rob-ert Anderson, the former president and chairmanofAndersonHardwoodFloors, the largest privately-owned hardwood floor manufacturer in the United States. A 1981 graduate of USC Upstate with a degreeininterdisciplinarystudies,DodieAnderson is co-owner of Anderson Hard-woodFloorsandalongtimesupporterofUSC Upstate’s athletic programs.

The three-story, 40,000-square-footcenter is located across Heyward Street from Stone Stadium, the Gamecocks’ soc-cer facility, in the 41-acre footprint known as “the Roost.” It isthe focal point of and the first piece in the re-developed area that eventually will include a coaches’ support building, a new tennis complex, a basket-ball practice facility, a parking garage and updated soccer prac-tice fields, softball stadium and outdoor track facilities.

Student-athletes are in and out of “the Dodie”throughout the day as they use computers and study areas, receive tutoring, counseling and ad-vising and even eat their meals.

Those early teams must have been a feisty and spirited group. A gamecock, of course, is a fighting rooster known for its spirit and courage. A cock fight, which was a popu-lar sport throughout the United States in the 19th century, would last until the death of one of the combatants. Cock fighting has been outlawed by most states for humanitar-ian reasons, but it is still held surreptitiously in many areas.
