THE UNSEEN ROSE

'Tis said, 0 Rose, thou many a time Art born to blush unseen,

And that in many a desert clime Thy wealth has wasted been.

Yet, faster would thy beauty fade, Thy fragrance faster go,

XVrere mortal eyes upon thee laid,

Did men thy beauty know.

Unseen! but not by Him whose brush In thee His art hath shown,

Who on thy petals put the blush, And shook thy sweetness down.

What matter, then, if thou be lost, And be a hidden joy ?

Thy Maker can admire thee most, Admire and not destroy.

Full maniy a heart will thus unfold Its grace where none can see,

And, did admiring eyes behold, \Vho'll tell what then imight be ?

But He who fills the desert air, And loves the lonely rose,

WVill look, and love the heart where'er Its hidden beauty blows.
