On Palm Sunday, 28 March, at the endof the solemn celebration of the Mass, the Holy Father recited the Angelus withthe faithful and the pilgrims gatheredin St Peter's Square. The following is atranslation of the Pope's Reflectionintroducing the Marian prayer:
As we come to the end of this celebra-tion we cannotbutthink of Palm Sun-day 25 yearsago.Itwasthe year 1985,which the United Nations had pro-claimed “International Youth Year”.Venerable and beloved John Paul IItook that moment to commemorateChrist's entry into Jerusalem to theacclaim ofhisyouthfuldisciples, found-edthe annualWorldYouthDay.Sincethen, Palm Sunday has acquired thischaracteristic: every two or three yearsit takes place with great global meet-ings, following Jesus in a sort of youthpilgrimage across the whole planet.
Twenty-five years ago my belovedPredecessor invited young people toprofess their faith in Christ who “takesupon himself the cause of man”(Homily, 31 March 1985, nn. 5, 7;L’Osservatore Romano English edition 9April 1985, p. 2).
Today I renew this call to the newgeneration, to bear witness with thegentle and luminous power of truth sothat the men and women of the third
millennium may not lack the most au-thentic model: Jesus Christ. I entrustthis mandate in particular to the 300delegates of the International YouthForum, who have come from all overthe world, convoked by the PontificalCouncil for the Laity.
