By now you have probably heard that Jennifer

Miller, our Program Manager, will be moving to La

Crosse, where her boyfriend has already started a

new job. La Crosse is home to Jennifer, with

many family members and friends, so the draw to

that area is understandable. Jennifer will be

looking for a position in the La Crosse area, but

hopes to be able to stay here with us long enough

to help select and train her replacement. Jen,

thank you so much for all the great work you

have done for Verona area seniors, and best

wishes for much happiness now and in the future.

~Mary

From the

Director’s Desk What does DNR mean to you? No, I’m not

talking about the Department of Natural

Resources. DNR, also known as DO NOT

RECUSITATE is a common term used to let

healthcare providers & others know your

wishes in the event your heart would stop. This

month, our TRIAD presentation will be

informative and one not to miss. Jasmine

Hudnall, D.O from the UW Verona Clinic &

Deputy Chief Cindy Diedrich from Fitchrona

EMS will be here to discuss the definition and

use for a DNR & how to apply choices. They

will also cover what your DNR status means to

EMS and other first responders. This truly is a

presentation that you won’t want to miss. This

presentation will be Thursday, February 11th

at 12:30.

February 17th is National Random Acts of

Kindness Day. My oldest son works at a fast

food chain, and he smiles every time he comes

home telling me about the strangers that pay for

the meal of those behind him. I love seeing what

that does to his 15-year-old soul.

Carry out a random act of kindness, with no

expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that

one day someone might do the same for you ~

#3 LEAN PROTEIN. Helps build muscle,

increases calorie burn to lose fat, helps you feel

satisfied to reduce hunger. Seafood, poultry/

eggs, and beef/pork (select sirloin or tenderloin

cuts) are good choices.

#4 BENEFICIAL BEVERAGES. Helps

hydrate; packed with nutrients, antioxidant.

1-2 cups of coffee are ok, but tea is better for

you. Water, Green or Black Tea, Black Coffee,

Milk, (organic: almond, soy or fat-free cow’s

milk), Red wine (1 serving per day), and Cocoa

powder.

#5 FABULOUS FLAVORS. Helps

provide healthy nutrients that are good for the

brain, digestion, heart and liver. They

increase metabolism, slow aging and decrease

inflammation. Fresh herbs, bulbs/roots, spices

and dried herbs and 70%+ dark chocolate are

good examples. A perfect ending….

CHOCOLATE!! Happy Valentines Day!!

THE CHRONICLE ~ FEBRUARY 2016 | 3

Health Bits from Barbara

February is American Heart Month.

Knowing the warning signs of heart problems

and what to do about them is of utmost

importance. But did you know there is a list of

the “Top 5 Food Categories for Your Heart”?

There are five new food categories that will

tune up your heart, energy and waistline.

#1 FIBER. Helps hunger, is nutrient

loaded, detoxifies, prevents constipation,

promotes weight loss, improves blood sugar and

cholesterol and slows aging. As flour increases

blood sugar levels, aim to get your fiber from

whole foods. Fruit: blueberries, raspberries,

blackberries, strawberries, oranges, grapefruit,

apples, pears, and cherries. Beans: Lentils,

kidney beans, black beans, organic soy,

edamame, pinto beans, cannellini beans and

peas. Nuts: walnuts, almonds, pecans, and

pistachios. Vegetables: artichoke, asparagus,

avocado, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots,

cauliflower, celery, kale, okra, pepper, spinach,

sweet potatoes, tomato. Grains: Avoid grains

ground into flour, rather choose whole grains,

not to exceed one cup of grains at a meal. Select

oats, quinoa, brown rice, or wild rice. For your

information, 20% of the population is gluten

intolerant (wheat, barley, rye).

#2 HEALTHY FAT. Helps improve

circulation, brain function, and artery function.

Decreases cardiovascular disease without

gaining weight. Examples: extra virgin olive oil,

walnut oil, almond oil, avocado oil, nuts, dark

chocolate.

improvement.

Pilates Workshop: Healthy Feet

Tuesday, February 2 at 12:15 PM Join Lindsay Pelletier from Hometown Pilates.

This free neck workshop is designed to inform

you on how to maintain proper head alignment

in your daily life. Healthy alignment is key to

being pain free! When a person has improper

alignment, joints and discs will wear out faster

than they should. Just like aligning the tires on

your car to prevent immature wearing down of

the tires- you want to do the same with your

body! If you currently have neck pain, this

workshop will teach you ways of moving that

will help. We will also work on stretching other

areas of the body that can impede the ability to

have proper alignment in the neck. Did you

know that your feet can affect your neck? Come

and learn more! Sign up at the Senior Center

front desk.

Functional Fitness Tuesdays at 9:00 AM

This exercise program is a low-impact

physical activity program to challenge your range

of fitness levels. The next session will begin on

Tuesday, February 2.

feet or low back were a little stiff? If this sounds

familiar, then this MELT Class is for you. In this

8-week session, all-levels class you will learn the

primary cause of pain and will be taught simple,

self-care techniques you can do at home to

remain active, healthy and pain-free for life.

Using specialized soft body rollers and small

MELT Hand and Foot Treatment Balls to

simulate the results of manual therapy, you will

learn how to reduce inflammation, ease chronic

neck and low-back strain, and more. The MELT

Method was developed for the general public as

a self-care tool to prevent and relieve chronic

pain. It’s an essential addition to any wellness or

fitness routine. The next session begins March

2.

Volunteer Drivers Paint a brighter

picture for Seniors and Veterans We all know seniors and veterans who can’t

drive anymore and don’t have alternate

transportation. It’s a challenging reality for

thousands of people that can leave them isolated

and struggling to maintain their independence.

Thankfully, Dane County has a transportation

safety net that serves seniors and veterans/

veterans’ families. Retired and Senior Volunteer

Program (RSVP) partners with senior centers/

programs in Dane County communities to

schedule rides and provide home-delivered

meals. Volunteer drivers receive mileage

reimbursement and extra liability insurance. If

you’re interested in driving for seniors and

home-delivered meals call Gene Kundert,

608-441-7896; and for veterans/veterans’

families call Tom Poppe, 608-238-7901.
