Dear Parents and Friends

Yesterday the whole school attended the Parish Mass for Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday begins the liturgical season of Lent. There's no better time than lent for expressing our solidarity with our neighbours. Throughout Lent, we commit to

strengthen our faith through prayer, reflection, fasting and giving.

Our Cross Country on Tuesday was another great school event. It was wonderful to see the students participate and show such great sportsmanship. I want to thank the parent helpers that assisted on the day and those that helped with set up at 7am. I also thank our staff for helping with set up and ensuring the smooth running of the event and Mrs Carlton for her organisation. This was then followed by our Pancake races which is always a fun event. Our community spirit is strong and it is wonderful to see so many parents and

grandparents supporting these events when they can.

Mrs Cintia May, our guidance counsellor, is organising National Day of Action against bullying and violence which is next Friday 15 March. We are asking that students wear orange so that we can raise awareness of this important issue. Students will also enjoy having lunch with their

buddy class.

This month our policy we are focusing on is the Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy. An important part of this is Student Protection Training for parents. Parents need to complete the online training every 2 years and submit the signed document at the end of the training to the school office. I encourage all parents to do this training so that they are able to assist with sporting days, excursions and any school event. The training is available on the BCE website http://www.bne.catholic.edu.au/students-parents/

Next week, we are sending a team of teachers to a 2 day STEM symposium which is a significant part of our strategic plan over the next 5 years to support differentiation in the classroom. Mrs Thomas, Ms Barnes, Ms Cristina, Mrs Simpson, Mrs Marrinan and myself will be attending. Mrs May and Ms Shears our School Chaplain will be attending a two day course on Youth Mental Health First Aid which is important work in supporting our students’

SCHOOL WIDE EXPECTATIONS

Our SJV School-wide Expectations:

Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe Be a Learner

Value: Service

To “Be of Service” as described in the First Letter of Peter 4:10, asks each one of us to serve others through our thoughts, words and actions. This can be as simple as sharing a smile with someone through to giving up time to help someone in need. Both, St John Vianney and Nano Nagle, were devoted people of service.

Policy of the Month

Child and Youth Risk Management Policy

This policy is available on our school website under student protection and our parent portal.

Catholic Dialogue Schools Project

On Wednesday last week our teaching staff participated in an evening staff meeting from 3:30pm – 6:30pm engaging further with the Catholic Dialogue Schools Project. Our introduction to this was last year when parents, staff and students were asked to complete a survey around our school’s Catholic identity. During the meeting last Wednesday, staff were taken through the three scales that were used to analyse the results of this survey. We then looked at the recommendations based on the findings of these results which have now been identified in our school’s strategic plan. The last session of the evening was used to review our school vision given our new learnings around the Catholic Dialogue Schools Project and the values which underpin all that we stand for at SJV. Although there was a lot to cover in the three hours and some of the content was quite intense, our remarkable staff remained engaged and participated enthusiastically, resulting in excellent drafts for our new school vision. (These

went on display during our pancake races so parents could provide their feedback).

SJV LEARNING POWERS

Ash Wednesday

Yesterday the whole school gathered together with Fr Frank and SJV parishioners to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass. The students participated beautifully with their singing and responses. Thank you to our senior students

who assisted with the various readings/prayers, altar serving and procession.

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of our Lenten journey as we prepare for the Easter Season. Receiving ash on our forehead is a powerful gesture of embracing a simple way of life, doing penance and turning away from sin. Our Liturgical

colours change from green to purple.

A Prayer for the beginning of Lent

Receive the cross on your forehead. Learn to know Christ and follow him.

Receive the sign of the cross on your ears, that you may hear the voice of the Lord. Receive the sign of the cross on your eyes, that you may see the glory of God. Receive the sign of the cross on your lips, that you may respond to the word of God. Receive the sign of the cross over your heart, that Christ may dwell there by faith. Receive the sign of the cross on your shoulders, that you may bear the gentle yoke of Christ.

Receive the sign of the cross on your hands, that Christ may be known in the work which you do.

Receive the sign of the cross on your feet, that you may walk in the way of Christ.

Project Compassion

During the Season of Lent we support the work of Caritas Australia through Project Compassion. This year the theme is ‘Give Lent 100% - Lives Change When We All give 100%’. Each classroom now has a Project Compassion box for donations which we will continue to collect during Lent. Last year we raised

$1029 so this year we are aiming to raise $1250.

A portion of our Fish and Chip day will also go towards Project Compassion. If you wish for your child/children to have fish and chips on Friday 22 March, please order using Qkr! Orders will close on Monday 18 March.

Have a wonderful week and may peace be with you.

Shrove Tuesday

On Tuesday this week we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with our annual SJV Pancake Races. All students were given the opportunity to carefully balance their pancake on a ruler while racing across the oval. The winner of the Golden Pancake went to Celeste! Congratulations! It was

wonderful to see so many parents come along to watch the races.

LIBRARY

This week was Qld Schools Libraries Week. #Students Need School Libraries. The theme: School Libraries Create Connections - focusing on

the many connections between our students, our community, and the world, that are facilitated by the school library.

As part of QLD Schools Libraries Week, we celebrated Dr Seuss’s birthday with stories, a treasure

hunt, and competitions. Thank you to all those that entered and congratulations to all our winners.

"Every school needs a school library—it’s a no-brainer. Reading underlies every area of the curriculum and the key is having a well-stocked school library and a passionate school librarian who

can put the right book into the right hands at the right time." Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton.

The SJV library continues to be busy at break times as students engage in reading and activities - a wonderful thing to see as a parent and educator. Our Readers Cup teams are demonstrating great commitment to their reading, being part of a

culture of literacy that we continue to create here at SJV.

Book Club catalogues have gone home and orders will close next Friday 15 March 2019.

Happy Reading!
