TRANSCRIPT
The Vienna Main Station overall project with a
size of 109 hectares is currently the most impor-
tant infrastructure project for the town and its
people. Just 2.5 kilometres as the crow flies from
Stephansplatz, a new district is being created,
which is characterised by the best possible trans-
port connections and a high quality of life, with
the new Vienna Main Station at its core.
The new mobility center Nowhere else in Vienna
offers such quick and easy access to destinations
in Austria, Europe or anywhere in the world, with
the main station, the inner-city public transportation
systems and the connection to Vienna Airport.
Keeping up with the times The new district
offers the mobility that is needed today and at
the same time offers living space in a central
location, with full city infrastructure and a little
piece of nature outside the front door.
VIENNA MAIN STATION OVERALL PROJECT
Michael HäuplMayor of ViennaThe main station is a key project for Vienna and symbolises the pivotal role of our city in the
heart of Europe. The station is of great importance to Vienna not only as a modern transportation hub, but also from the point of view of city development policy and the economy. It represents Vienna’s role as a na tional centre and, at the same time, enables the development of an attractive new district of the city.

Doris BuresFederal Minister of Transport, Innovation, and TechnologyThe expansion of rail transportation and
finding ways to make it more attractive is more important than ever. People are using the train in increasing numbers; passenger numbers are rising steadily. In addition, an infrastructure project of this size and importance means an additional revival of
the economy and creates thousands of jobs during the construction phase and after completion.

TRANSPORTATIONHUB
The new main station is being constructed as a
through station. For the first time, trains will arrive
in the capital from all directions to destinations in
all directions. Up to December 2009, the old Süd-
bahnhof is the end station for trains arriving from
the south and east. By creating a high-performance
north-south and east-west connection, the station
will become the most important hub for regional,
national, and international transport and a central
junction in the trans-European rail network.
An opportunity for Vienna The city is strength-
ening its position in the heart of Europe and as
a business location, gains a fast and high-perfor-
mance connection to the most important markets.
This new, state-of-the-art station will become a
calling card for Vienna as a centre of tourism and
a business location in the heart of Europe.
Optimum regional, national and international connections For passengers, this means faster train
connections, greater convenience when travelling
because changing trains is simple and connections
are optimised, as well as accessibility in line with
the latest standards. The new station brings the
cities of Europe closer together and makes borders
disappear. It will be possible to travel from Salzburg
to Budapest directly via Vienna’s Main Station in
five hours instead of the current time of approxi-
mately six hours. Speedy, direct connections will also
be available for local and regional transportation.
From the airport to St. Pölten or from Wiener
Neustadt to Bratislava – without changing.

Christian KernSpokesman of theManaging Board of ÖBB-Holding AGTo be completed at the end of 2014, the new
Vienna Main Station is the most significant infrastructure project for the city and for ÖBB. In the future, ÖBB will stand formodernity and openness. The new main station expresses this as the face of thismodern company. It affords travellers greater comfort and convenience. It will be a central point in the European railway network of which we can be proud.
Franz BauerBoard Member, ÖBB Infrastruktur AGIn its implementation, the Vienna Main Station project must meet
the expectations of and demands on technology, logistics and communications. Hundreds of professionals – from planners and architects to construction managers and craftsmen – have been working hard to ensure that by December 2015, the project can fulfi l its destiny as an internati-onal transportation hub. Thus, ÖBB Infra-struktur is creating a rail system for the next generations that excels not only through its tremendous functionality, but also through its attractiveness and sustainability.
Around the station, an entirely new urban district
is gradually emerging on the 59-hectare former
ÖBB site right now. Altogether, approximately
5,000 apartments are being built to accommodate
13,000 residents, offices for 20,000 employees
and space for hotels, shops, services and caterering
operations. The municipal development area is
framed by the Wiedner Gürtel to the north,
Arsenal strasse to the east as well as Sonnwend-
gasse and Gudrunstrasse to the south and west.
The area south of the site is designated primarily
for an attractive residential district around the
7-hectare Helmut Zilk park. The corner of Wiedner
Gürtel and Arsenalstrasse is destined to be the
future home of the Erste Campus, the new head-
quarters of Erste Group Bank AG. Immediately
south, a real estate developer is constructing an
office/residential complex. The southern forecourt
of the train station is designated for the ÖBB
Group headquarters, set to open by mid-2014,
with space for up to 1,700 ÖBB employees, based
on the site plans of Vienna architects Zechner &
Zechner ZT GmbH.
New model of urban development In 2012,
a new model in urban land use, created through
a collaborative process, was designated for the
11-hectare northeast section of the municipal
development area. The goal: to optimise the
urban development landscape and to place greater
focus on small-scale structures. Plans call for the
creation of a vibrant, liveable district for 3,500
residents, featuring homes, offices, retail, caterers,
local supplies and amenities, as well as counselling
and social services facilities, by 2016. Largely free
of through-traffic, the area will host an abundant
array of open spaces with high quality recreation.
ÖBB-Immobilien will commence with the sale of
these lots in the fall of 2014.
CITY DEVELOPMENT AREA
STATION BUILDING
The new main station is being constructed on the
site between the former south and east stations
and Südtiroler Platz. The design of the new
station, with its main entrance on Südtiroler Platz,
will be light and easily accessible. Escalators and
elevators convey travellers to the station‘s ten plat-
forms. The approximately 90 shops, caterers and
other services entice visitors to relax, browse and
dine in the 20,000 m2 space. The shopping centre,
with its meticulously selected retail and business
mix, serves as a superb local supplier and source
of amenities for travellers, visitors and, of course,
residents of the new city district as well. Below the
station area, a garage is being constructed that will
hold more than 600 cars, as well as three bicycle
garages with around 1,100 spaces.
Modern roof architecture The eye-catching visual
feature of the new station is the folded, diamond-
shaped roof, which extends over the platforms.
This translucent roof of around 25,000 square
metres in size ensures a bright and friendly atmos-
phere. Clear guidance systems help travellers to
find their way. Intensive work has already been
carried out on the station accessibility concept to
ensure that the traffic situation is designed in an
accessible manner in accordance with the current
state of the art.0607
About 100 kilometres of new track, 300 state-
of-the-art switches, and countless signals turn
the station into the high-capacity transit hub at
the centre of Vienna – and the heart of Europe.
The railroad infrastructure component of the
overall project – specifically the platform systems
and the station itself – cover about 50 hectares
and stretch along six kilometres from the Wien-
Meidling train station in the west to the South-
West junction bridge (A23). Under this project,
nine bridge support structures on the access routes
to the new Vienna Main Station are slated for
extensive restoration and expansion or even
complete renovation by 2014.
Innovative switching technology: the inter- locking centre south The location of the central
nervous system of the main station is the newly
constructed interlocking centre south on Laxen-
burger Straße, which entered operation in January
2010. Hundreds of kilometres of cable have been
laid in the ultra-modern building and eight termi-
nals have been assembled to control signals and
to clear or block the tracks for trains. From this
high-performance control centre, seven Austrian
Federal Railways employees in each shift will con-
trol around 600 switches and crossings to ensure
that the trains arrive at the correct platform.
In the new central through station, travellers and
commuters benefit from direct and rapid connecti-
ons and will be able to change trains quickly and
conveniently on the same platform. The U1 sub-
way line connects the main station directly to the
city’s subway system and the city centre. The Vienna
Main Station will connect suburban railway trains,
currently running along the main north-south
stretch, with those which will be running continu-
ously in the east-west direction in the future. The
extended tram line D, bus lines 13A and 69A, tram
lines O and 18, as well as regional buses will gua-
rantee local connections. Plans are being drawn
up to link the southern part of the city district via
subway line U2.
The direct, weather-proof connection to the U1 subway line and the S-Bahn (commuter light rail). Passengers can directly access the
subway (U-Bahn) and commuter light rail (S-Bahn)
through a new subterranean pedestrian walkway
that leads through the redesigned, ultramodern
Südtiroler Platz station. Taxi stands, Kiss & Ride
zones, handicapped parking and a bike garage will
be erected on the station‘s south forecourt. Drivers
can also reach the underground parking garage via
the south forecourt. The installation of a rail con-
nection in Kledering will allow future long distance
trains arriving from the west to travell all the way
to Vienna/Schwechat International Airport via
Vienna Main Station.

The new urban district is composed of 32 hectares
on the former premises of the old South/East Train
Station. Altogether, more than 5,000 units will
be built for about 13,000 residents around the
7-hectare Helmut Zilk park. Groundbreaking for
the first phase of residential units was in the spring
of 2012. By the summer of 2013, the first tenants
were moving into their new, ecologically sophisti-
cated and ultramodern subsidised dwellings.
Homes for all styles of life Over 1,100 units are
slated for completion and move-in by the fall of
2014. Completion of the remaining apartments
will occur in phases over the next few years. Just
as exciting: Vienna‘s very first SMART apartments
will be constructed in the Sonnwendviertel starting
in 2014. These units are especially appealing be-
cause of their maximum space utilisation and par-
ticularly affordable lease rates, especially for coup-
les, single-parents and singles. A total of 300 of
these units are being built in the Sonnwendviertel.
Abundant recreational options In addition to
the diversity of styles, the apartment mix in the
Sonnwendviertel also reflects the principle of “so-
cial sustainability” quite clearly. Multi-generational
homes, common spaces, public meeting spaces
and home offices, combined with the ample selec-
tion of recreational opportunities in the new park,
collectively reinforce the sense of living together in
the new district from the very start. And speaking
of living together: the satellite office for district
services/urban renewal* 10, located directly on
site, provides an ideal starting point for those in-
terested in service and information matters.

The subject of education also plays a vital role in
the new city district. Beginning in the fall of 2014,
the educational campus in the Sonnwendviertel
– staffed by a team of 200 educationalists and
administrators for 1,100 children and teen agers
– will offer a diverse and full-day schedule of pro-
grammes. A kindergarten that accommodates 11
groups, a 17-class full day elementary school, and
a 16-class new middle school (also full day) will
provide for all kinds of excitement, interest and
appeal in educational matters. Together with the
7-hectare Helmut Zilk park, the educational campus
represents at the same time a very noteworthy
choice for all residents who already reside in this
part of the Favoriten area. This also includes a new
youth centre that is scheduled to open in the fall
of 2014.
Perfect local amenities The splendid local
infrastructure that already exists on site further-
more adds to the quality of life. It includes the
diverse mix of retail along the pedestrian zone
on Favoriten strasse, the Victor Adler Markt,
which serves as a local supplier, the Amalienbad
swimming hall on Reumannplatz and the Therme
Oberlaa thermal baths, which can be conveniently
reached on the extended U1 subway line starting
in 2017. The new shopping services at Vienna
Main Station are also part of the mix.
New connections The entire development
plan – from the Belvedere district commercial centre
to the new Vienna Main Station and the new
Sonnwendviertel – dramatically enhances the site
of the former South/East Train Station in Vienna‘s
Favoriten area. Taken together, the bridges and
streets, warm lighting, tree-lined boulevards and
bike paths additionally guarantee passage through
and freedom of movement within this new urban
district. The former barrier that the 170-year-old
South/East Train Station site once embodied is
now history. Two new bridges (“Arsenalsteg” and
“Südbahnhofbrücke”), three underpasses and a
diversity of new street pathways permanently
connect Favoriten to its neighbouring districts,
Wieden and Landstrasse.
HIGH QUALITY OF LIFE IN ALL AREAS
1213
The planners of Vienna Main Station have already
put a premium on the diligent and sustainable
handling of the environment: Overall, three envi-
ronmental impact assessments have been perfor-
med. The effects on a wide range of areas such as
the burden on noise and climate pollution, ground
water, air pollutants and other pollutants were
investigated and assessed. An impressive example of
the protective measures laid down: around 14,000
soundproof windows and eight kilometres of
soundproof walls.
Environmentally responsible construction In the
construction of the main station, Austrian Federal
Railways also committed itself to environmentally
friendly planning and construction of the building
site. All recyclable material, particularly concrete
rubble and track ballast, were processed and
redeployed on site. Excavated earth that was no
longer of use at the construction site was hauled
away by train. A dedicated loading track was in-
stalled for this purpose. To meet the huge demand
for concrete, the builder‘s own onsite concrete
mixing system produced up to 180 m3 per hour.
All of these measures mean that planners could
dramatically reduce the time spent hauling to and
from the site.
Energy-efficient buildings Equal priority was given
to the use of sustainable materials and to achieving
the greatest possible energy efficiency. Geothermal
energy, solar energy, district heating and cooling
networks, an integrated CO2-modulated ventila-
tion system and grey water utilisation: together,
these resources make Vienna Main Station a model
project of energy-efficiency, in which resource use
is minimised and the environment protected.
Energy balance sheet With the aid of geothermal
and solar energy systems, Vienna Main Station
generates 13 percent of its entire energy needs
directly on site. Overall, ÖBB at Vienna Main
Station covers 100 percent of its power require-
ments from renewable energy resources.
