The USS Maddox
In 1964, the U.S. sent the USS Maddox and other ships to the Gulf of Tonkin to patrol the coast of Northern Vietnam. These ships shelled many offshore Islands. On August 2, 1964, the North Vietnamese responded by attacking the Maddox with three torpedo boats.

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
After the USS Maddox was attacked by the Northern Vietnamese, President Lyndon B. Johnson responded with an air strike. This attack was continued and it became known as the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. The Gulf of Tonkin served as a major factor in the war.

Tet Offensive
One of the NLF’s most diabolical plans in the Vietnam war was the Tet Offensive. The Tet Offensive was a plan to attack every major city and province in Southern Vietnam. The attack was launched on the first day of a Vietnamese holiday Tet, January 30, 1968.

• After President Nixon made the decision to enter Cambodia many were outraged with his decision.

• After the first day of protesting the Cambodia decision the Ohio National Guard was sent to Kent State University.
• On May 4, 1970 the Ohio National Guard shot into a crowd of protestors.
• Four students were killed and nine were injured.
