DEVELOPER NEWS:Dedication of Longview ParkOn Aug. 11th, 2016, Longview Park was dedicated in honor of Larry Rodgers.

The park was dedicated in Larry’s honor because of his tireless volunteer work on behalf of the Meridian Ranch community. He served on the Design Review Council #1 Board. After that he served on the Upper Black Squirrel Groundwater Management District (UBS) Board. Meridian Ranch’s

water is derived from groundwater, and lies within the UBS. After his stint on the UBS Board, he became a board member of the Meridian Service Metropolitan District and served on the board until he his health prevented him from doing so. Larry passed away on Oct. 7, 2014 after a valiant battle with cancer. We will always appreciate Larry’s efforts and dedication to this community.

Chris also took the time to research other houses for sale in Meridian Ranch to help determine the best price for our house. Chris was available to answer all our questions through the whole transaction. FALCON FIRE DEPT. FAQs about

Fire ExtinguishersHome fire extinguishers can help keep small fires from spreading, but like all life safety equipment, they must be in good working order and used properly to be effective. Here

are some common fire extinguisher questions received by the Falcon Fire Protection District.

What kind of extinguisher should I buy for my home? FFPD does not endorse any particular brands, but the extinguisher should carry the label of an independent testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Choose a multi-purpose extinguisher that can be used on all types of home fires.

Where is the best place to keep an extinguisher? Fire extinguishers should be stored in locations that are easy to access and where all family members know to find them. Consider obtaining fire extinguishers for kitchens, laundry rooms, and garages as well as near fireplaces, wood burning stoves, and barbecues.

Where can I have an extinguisher recharged after it’s been used? Most home fire extinguishers are good for a single use and cannot be recharged. Extinguishers designed for commercial use (like those in stores, offices, schools, etc.) can be recharged after use and must be inspected annually by a certified technician.

My fire extinguisher is old. Is it still good? Home fire extinguishers typically have a 5-15 year lifespan; however, their effectiveness can degrade with time. Check the label to see if the manufacturer has a recommended replacement date. If the extinguisher has a dial, the needle should be in the green area. Make sure the extinguisher is undamaged.

Where can I discard an old or used fire extinguisher? The El Paso County Household Hazardous Waste facility at 3255 Akers Drive accepts fire extinguishers for disposal.

How do I use my fire extinguisher? Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. When a fire happens, the priority is always life safety. Make sure everyone has exited the building and someone is calling 911 to report the fire. You should use a fire extinguisher only if the fire is small, the room is not filled with smoke, and you have a clear exit path. Remember the mnemonic PASS:

Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism. Aim low. Point the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire. Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

September 2016Design Review Council News

As we approach the beautiful fall weather Colorado brings with the changing of the colors and cooler nights, a couple of items to remember for tree, shrubs and lawn care:

Perennials:

It is time to plant perennial seeds and bulbs! Yes, perennials count as the minimum requirements for the front yard. One gallon perennials work well for front yard flower gardens. In the spring it gives the yard a nice burst of color.

Trees:

Fall is also a good time to plant trees. Fall planting encourages good root development, allowing the plants to get established before spring. If weather is dry, provide water up until the ground freezes.

Lawns:

September is one of the best months of the entire year for seeding or sodding new lawns. If the lawn needs thatching, it can be done during the early fall. Over-seed old lawns with fresh seed to help fill in the bare spots and crowd out weeds and mosses. (1)

Landscaping guidelines from the Meridian Ranch Design Guidelines:

1. Shrub and perennial beds must be mulched with rock or wood mulch and lined with landscape fabric or other acceptable weed barrier material. The combining of rock and wood mulch in the same planting bed is not permitted.

2. Rock mulch shall be a minimum of ¾” and a maximum of 1 ½” diameter. Larger rock is allowed in drainage areas only.

3. Acceptable rock mulch color includes natural, earth-toned colors. Lava rock, white marble, white quartz, black granite and bright, harsh colors are prohibited.

4. Wood mulch must be of high quality and natural in color, with no added pigment. (Chipper mulch is not an acceptable material due to its tendency to be easily blown by the wind).

5. All mulched areas adjacent to turf should utilize an edger to define the planting bed.

PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR PET:It doesn’t take much to remember that we have pets in our community. If fact, if you don’t watch your step, you’re liable to step in on such reminder!

Besides being unsightly and smelly, animal waste can be hazardous to the health of our children who play in the community and other pets. One of the most common forms of disease transmission between dogs is through their fecal matter.

When walking your dog in our community, remember that it should be leashed. Also, it is important to remember to immediately clean up after your pet. Take a baggie along with you to pick up waste and then dispose of it properly.

By taking a few simple steps to clean up after your pet, you can contribute not only to the beautification of our community, but also towards the elimination of one of the most irritating nuisances in our community. Thank you for your cooperation.
