10 Questions to Ask Your Student’s TeachersThe Viking Voice asked H-F’s depart-ment chairs for questions to help parents get the most out of their con-ferences with teachers. Suggestions include.:

#1 — What can I do at home to help my student succeed in your class?

#2 — What is the best way to commu-nicate with you?

#3 — Do you have ways that you com-municate electronically with students and parents? If yes, what are they?

#4 — How much and what kind of homework should I expect my student to be completing for your class?

#5 — Are there any major assignments, projects or exams coming up that I should be aware of?

#6 — Does my student actively partici-pate in your class?

#7 — Does my student ask questions in class when clarification is needed?

#8 — Are you available before and/or after school to assist my student? If not, what other tutoring options are

available in your subject?

#9 — Are there any web-sites you can recommend for supporting my student’s learning?

#10 — What are two things my student should work on to find success in your class?

The first quarter of the 2019/20 school year wrapped up on

Friday, Oct. 18, signaling that it is soon time for Parent-Teacher Conferences. H-F faculty and staff members will be available during the afternoon from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and in the evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. to meet one-on-one with par-ents and guardians on Thursday, Nov. 7. In order to allow teachers time to prepare for the meetings, students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. The complete academic schedule for the week of confer-ences is:• Monday, Nov. 4 — 7-period day; regular 50-min. classes (Periods 1-2-

3-4-5-6-7)

• Tuesday, Nov. 5 — 7-period day; regular 50-min. classes (Periods 1-2-

3-4-5-6-7)

• Wednesday, Nov. 6 — Regular Wednesday Block Day (Periods 1-7-6-5-4)

• Thursday, Nov. 7 — Regular Thursday Block Day with student dismissal at 11:30 a.m. (Periods 1-2-3)

• Friday, Nov. 8 — Institute Day (No school for students)

If this is your first year at H-F, please know that H-F conferences use a format known as arena conferencing, instead of an individual-classroom format. Faculty and staff will all be located in the North Building’s Fieldhouse, seated by depart-ment, and will be available to meet on a first-come, first-served basis. No appoint-ments are necessary. Due to the number of parents wishing to meet with teachers, individual conferences will be limited to five minutes. This will allow all parents waiting in line an opportunity to meet with — and to see — the greatest number of teachers possible. If there is a long line for one of your student’s teachers, please proceed to a different teacher who may have fewer parents waiting, then return to the other teacher later. At H-F, we look forward to parental involvement at all levels.

For questions about conferences, please contact the

Principal’s Office at 708-335-5541.

Please share the news with junior high students in your neighbor-hood! Attending Voyage to Excellence is a great way to become acquainted with the curricular and extracurricular programs at Home-wood-Flossmoor, as well as to meet interesting people and animals (including our visitinig macaw, Bella, pictured here). Incoming families will be able to meet department chairs, teachers, coaches and sponsors as they tour the campus. Booths from the school’s academic departments, clubs, sports and activities will be run by current students, teachers and sponsors, who will provide information on their organizations and how to get involved. Approximately 300 course options are available through H-F’s nine academic depart-ments. There are nearly 100 clubs and sports to join, as well, includ-ing ZooBots, Friends of Rachel, Viking Broadcasting, French Cuisine & Conversation and Lacrosse.
