SEASON WITH YOUR
LOVED ONES!
Parent Teacher Conferences
Thank you to the many parents and significant adults who took the time to conference with their child’s teacher. Parents who take an active in-
terest in their child’s schooling send a very powerful message of support and encouragement that will pay high returns for their child’s success in school. We are pleased that each year over 96% of Voyager’s parents at-tend fall conferences.
Newsletter and More Online
Parents can access the Voyager school newsletter and more by visiting the Voyager website at www.howellschools.com. Click on “schools”, then “Voyager”, and you can view Voyager’s events. Please note that Voyager lunch menus and newsletters are only available online. If you or some-one you know does not have Internet access, please inform your teacher or the school office that you need a hard copy of this information. If you did not fill out the email address request form at the beginning of the year or at conferences with your teacher, please be sure to request one from the office. Your signature is needed to process your request. Those of you that do not have Internet access, and have notified the office or your teacher, will continue to receive hard copies sent home.
Cold Weather News
Students have been coming to school without warm jackets, hats and gloves. Children go outside daily for recess. Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather.
School Start Times/Building Entry
Your students should be entering the building at 8:45 am and be in their classroom by 8:50 am. Many students are still being dropped off after these times and are receiving tardies on their attendance record.

Hello Voyager Families! Howell is fortunate to have elementary counselors avail-able for students and families. We are here to help with and support the personal, social, and emotional experi-ence for students. In light of recent, tragic events in our community and our world, we wanted to share some tips for talking with chil-dren about traumatic events. Whether it is a significant change in the family, a violent crime, or a natural disaster, talking with children about “big” things can be difficult. Children are likely to know when something bad has hap-pened, or is happening, because they see images on TV or hear people talking. Here are some tips to get you started – talking with your children about their feelings will be helpful. Create a safe and reassuring atmosphere: let them know they can talk with you about their feelings and reassure them you will keep them safe and comfortable. Tell the truth: answer their questions honestly, and with words they understand. Don’t overwhelm them with de-tails unless they ask for specific information. Help them cope with their feelings: encourage children to talk, draw, or play with toys to express themselves and find comfort. Focus on the positive (for example, point out all the people that help out during an emergency) and keep things as consistent and “normal” at home as possi-ble. Manage the media: Monitor, and talk with them about, what they see and hear. Look for signs of anxiety: watch for changes in behavior and appetite; consider talking with a counselor or another trusted health care professional. If a loved one is involved in a tragedy: spend extra time with your children and help them feel secure. Consider creating a special support group for the family. For more information or support, you can reach me at [email protected] or 517.552.7500, ext. 46124. For the full article, visit www.journeyworks.com. In partnership, Kim Martin School Counselor
