From the desk of the CAO...

Happy New Year Port Alice residents. I hope everyone had an incredible Christmas and New Year’s.

This is the second installment in my monthly reports and from what I’ve heard, my December editorial was well received.

Last month many of you noticed large ships anchored off our shores on five (5) different occasions receiving municipal water. That bulk water purchase was authorized by municipal Council on July 12, 2017 through resolution that states,

THAT the municipality welcomes the opportunity to assist Marine Harvest in their efforts to control the harmful effects of ocean parasites on their Atlantic salmon stocks during the summer months.

AND THAT the municipality agrees to sell Marine Harvest municipal water at the metered rates

specified in the “Village of Port Alice Rates and Fees Bylaw” plus any additional related costs.

AND FURTHER THAT the availability and frequency of such water sales will be at the discretion of the

Public Works Department.

The public can be reassured that at “no time” during the transfer of water to the ship was our water collection, storage and distribution system placed at risk, nor was the health and well-being of our community. Public works staff closely monitored the water system during each of the five (5) transfer operations. Sufficient volumes of water were maintained in the system in each instance to support full fire protection. The decision to authorize the sale of municipal water was made only after a detailed review by staff and myself. Marine Harvest is responsible for all costs associated with the supply of water.

The Recycling Depot has now been brought under the umbrella of municipal operations. The posting for the new municipal position is now being advertised, with a closing date of January 9, 2018. Please note the following new hours of operation:

Wednesday 12pm to 6pm Saturday 10am to 4pm

We would like to thank the Port Alice Recycling Society for their years of dedication and service to our community. Without the hard work of the society, recycling would not be where it is today in Port Alice.

The work to build our new 300,000-gallon reservoir above Rupert Avenue is still on schedule, with an expected completion date of late January, or early February, weather permitting. Our contractor advised the material to build the epoxy coated steel tank has now been received at their yard and will soon be transported to the site.

The completion of the major upgrade to our waste water treatment plant has experienced a setback. Staff is working closely with the contractor’s design-build team to address this matter. I will endeavor to keep you updated as the project progresses towards completion.

The detailed design work for the marina project is nearing completion. Council on December 13th approved the

layout for the project. Copies of that plan are available at the Municipal Office.

If you have any comments, questions or concerns with my monthly report or anything related to municipal operations, please drop by to see me. My door is always open to you, the citizens of our amazing community.

In closing, from my family to yours, I would like to wish everyone a safe and prosperous New Year.

** Please note regular Monday to Friday Hours are still in effect for outside depot

Community News

From Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood, through

the turbulence of the 1960’s and on into the

21st century, the songs of Neil Diamond

continue to attract new fans to go along with

the legions of old.

A show such as Jason Scott’s “Diamond

Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond” is

an extremely entertaining recognition to the

music and talent of this legendary singer-

songwriter.

“DIAMOND FOREVER A CELEBRATION

OF NEIL DIAMOND” PRESS RELEASE

A CELEBRATION OF THE

MUSIC OF

NEIL DIAMOND By Ferdy Belland

“Neil Diamond has recorded his music so many times, and changed it so much, that interpreting that music can in itself

be an art.” Says Jason Scott, creator and performance artist for the one man live stage extravaganza. “When you look

at Neil Diamond’s history and career of six decades, you realize the music and the possibilities of that music are

unlimited.”

The process of interpreting Neil Diamond’s harmonious combination of notes is not dissimilar to a symphony conductor

interpreting the music of Beethoven from a score.

Certainly Neil Diamond is not just a simple songwriter, but a composer and performer as well. His music has that

universality and timelessness that transcends his own personality, and the personalities of anyone performing his

music. The proof of this is the audience itself, crossing all generations, with new fans added every year, and the songs

themselves, which are so well known as to be archetypal.

Jason Scott’s musical resume is impeccable. He began attending a Conservatory of Music in Toronto at the age of 5,

achieving first degree honors and graduation by age 15. In his twenties, Scott toured extensively with nightclub and

concert bands and in his thirties Jason was a Canadian record label signed recording artist, writer and performer.

2005 in Las Vegas, Jason was the first ever Canadian international performer to win the “Be a Legend” celebrity tribute

artist competition as Neil Diamond, at the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino. A well received audition followed with “On

Stage Entertainment” owners of the world famous “Legends in Concert”.

September of 2010 Jason Scott was awarded the Sunburst Convention of Celebrity Tribute Artists “Best Platinum

Showcase Award”. In Las Vegas February 2011, Jason not only won the second place “2nd Annual Vegas Tribute

Artist” trophy but was honored to be invited to perform as the opening act for the “Country Superstars” at the “Golden

Nugget Showroom”.

Rescheduled Date!

Rumble Sheet 8 January 2018

February 2012, Jason Scott returned to Las Vegas and performed his award winning show on the “First Street Stage”,

breaking attendance records at “The Fremont Street Experience”.

Scott was also specially invited to perform at “The Reel Awards Show” a yearly gala held in Las Vegas. During the

evenings event, Jason was surprised and humbled to win the “Reel Award” in the “Pop and Rock” category. The “Reel

Award” is considered to be the “Oscar” of the tribute industry.

Jason has made hit appearances at “The Rosen Plaza Hotel” as well as “The Wyndham Lake Buena Vista Resort” at

“Disneyworld” in Orlando Florida and aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship “The Monarch of The Seas”. He has

appeared in Las Vegas at “The Greek Isles Hotel and Casino”, “The South Point Hotel Casino and Spa”, “The Imperial

Palace” and before her demolition, the world famous “Stardust Resort and Casino”.

The biggest news recently has been the official press release that came this past April 2014 announcing that British

Columbia based Jason Scott from the show “Diamond Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond” will be the ONLY

Canadian Neil Diamond performance artist, cast in an upcoming feature length motion picture titled “Diamond

Mountain”!

Currently in post-production preparing for a mid-2017 release, this motion picture was filmed in the United States,

England, Ireland, Australia, Santiago Chili South America and British Columbia Canada. Jason Scott was honored to

be the only Canadian “Neil” performance artist chosen to be part of this film’s 14 artist multi-national cast!

This past April 2016 all of the Cast walked the Red Carpet, screened the “Diamond Mountain” Movie and performed a

multi-cast concert joined by 5 actual members of Neil Diamond’s band on the “Showroom” stage at the Suncoast Hotel

in Las Vegas! As a result of the Las Vegas performance a new show has been created called “Diamond Nation

Celebration” set for up-coming multi-cast performances in Orlando Florida in spring of 2018. This show will not only

celebrate Neil Diamond but will be supporting the charity that provides for the families of the victims of the Orlando

Pulse Nightclub terrorist shooting.

Jason Scott’s performance hands-down personifies and delivers the look the sound the moves and the music of icon

Neil Diamond.

Jason Scott’s “Diamond Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond” is an exciting, must-see evening’s entertainment

event! Enhanced by background stories, humor, authentic costuming, studio recorded audio tracks and incredibly

realistic “spot on” vocals, this highly audience interactive show creates a sight and sound experience that transports

delighted Neil Diamond fans, old and young, down memory lane.

“The music bridge’s generations”, say’s Scott, “The show is structured but also spontaneous, loose and huge fun as its

very audience connected. Sometimes I find myself in the crowd and then other times I’ve found some of the audience

on stage with me. The show is one big “Neil Diamond” Party!”

Neil Diamond himself has said, “If I had one message I would say be open and receptive to the music and possibilities

without giving it too much thought. Really feel it and it will be an immensely worthwhile experience.”

Such an experience is Jason Scott’s “Diamond Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond” coming Saturday January 28,

2018 to the Port Alice Royal Canadian Legion. Tickets are $25. Doors are 6:00 PM and Showtime is 7:30 PM. Tickets

available at the Port Alice Royal Canadian Legion 250-284-3256 or call “Audrey” at 250-284-3261. Public & Members

Welcome!

Happy New Year to Sea View School Families and Friends!

A new year, and a fresh beginning greets us as we return to school and carry on our year of learning

together. There are so many things to look forward to as we scan ahead, but most important are the

day to day efforts and experiences that enable us each to be successful – and happy! Our year-long

focus on developing the Seven Habits of Happy Kids continues, with January focusing on Habit

Number 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. It’s a great habit for adults to work on,

as well as kids – and its one we will be exploring and practicing together.

A learning focus for January will be research projects and preparations for our second Heritage Fair.

Students will each choose from a variety of topics related to family or local and Canadian heritage.

Please plan to join us at the Community Centre on Thursday, February 15 between 11 and 2:30.

There will be student-created displays, a community Potluck Lunch in the Larry Pepper Room, and a

variety of hands-on activities in the afternoon. There will also be skill-testing questions and prizes! We

hope you will join us.

Staff will return to school on Monday, January 8th for a day of professional learning. Students will

return to school on Tuesday, January 9th. See you then!
