AmeriCorps Assists LocalsAllegany Nordic Group Recieves Aid From AmeriCorps on Trails

Eight AmeriCorps employees assisted Allegany Nordic with maintenance work on the Art Roscoe Trails at Allegany State Park. The crew worked for three days in late July restoring drainage, removing debris and cutting back encroaching vegetation. AmeriCorps employees Ethan Weston, Kelly Gavin, Brian Purcell, Stacey Hightower, Katelyn Almeter, Kyle Cox, Nik Potopchuck and Brendon Scherer were assisted by Allebany Nordic members Andy Dickson, Ray Valeri, Sue Wysse, Bill Weitzel and Mary Lou Deitrich. “It is strenuous work,” said Andy Dickson. “These tireless helpers got a lot of work done around the trail system. Allegany Nordic is extremely grateful for their effort which will pay a big dividend in the upcoming ski season.” Allegany State Park donated the use of two cabins for the group during their service. Food and refreshments were donated by an area charity and Allegany Nordic. Allegany Nordic organized four years ago to address deteriorating trail and ski

conditions. Its mission is to advance the sport of cross-country skiing on the Art Roscoe Trails of the Allegany State Park. Since its inception, Allegany Nordic has organized volunteers every year to address much-needed work around the trail system including unplugging culverts, re-establishing ditches, moving fallen trees off the trail and cutting back branches that have grown into the trail. It draws park and government attention to trails issues,

collaborates with regional organizations, promotes the skiing program and is currently fundraising to purchase new grooming equipment. During the ski season, Allegany Nordic maintains a website with current information about grooming and trail conditions. Its next trail workday will be August 20th. Volunteers are welcome and will meet at the Art Roscoe trailhead at 8:45AM. For more information, visit www.alleganynordic.org.

How on earth are we supposed to watch our waistlines when our local Chamber keeps knocking these awesome summer festivals out of the ball park? It’s been one weekend festival after another, and the quality of each event has been top notch! But why does it seem like I’ve been eating my way through the whole season? Time to ride a little further, walk at a brisker pace and cut those dang calories whenever I can. But not this weekend – no sir. The ever-popular “Taste of Ellicottville” kicks off this weekend – Saturday, August 6th and Sunday, August 7th. Our sidewalks will be filled once again with locals and visitors alike, who’ll be enjoying the

delectable treats from area restaurants while strolling around and perusing our shops and stores. The streets will be lined with tents emanating the most scrumptious aromas, where for a modest fee you can sample many popular and exclusive repasts from our awesome eateries. One thing is certain, this weekend never disappoints. I’ve heard there will be over 100 menu items to tempt the entire family. So, dear readers, hit the gym, cut the ice cream and salty snacks, do whatever you have to do – you’ll want to keep up with all the fun and food served up by the best little four-season resort in the East – Ellicottville, NY. Until next week… JZ

August 4. Include yours by the deadline with form and payment. No faxed application forms will be accepted. The entry fee must accompany the team application, and can be paid by check or credit card. The entry fee for four player teams is $124. The two groups anticipate having over 300 teams and 10,000 spectators from a 100-mile radius to attend the 3-day event and see this as a great opportunity to showcase Olean. The tournament will take place on Delaware Avenue and North Barry Streets in Olean, NY. The tournament, based on basketball played in driveways throughout the U.S., will include players who have no experience to those who have played college and semi-professional basketball. Primarily based on

their age and level of experience, players will be placed in divisions where they will be most evenly matched. Depending on the number of teams placed in a specific division, players and the teams they’re on will be playing for first- and second- and third trophies. Also teams that finish last in their divisions could receive “Toilet bowl” trophies. The Charter Members of the Gus Macker Olean are Park Centre Development, CUTCO/Ka-Bar Visitors Center, and the Kinley Corporation. Organizers also are looking for volunteers to keep score, serve as referees, assist with water and food distribution, and help set up and tear down. To volunteer or for more information, please contact David Carucci at (716) 372-9289 or Meme K. Yanetsko at 372-4433.

Through its participation in a national Medication Safety Initiative with the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), Olean General Hospital (OGH) recently completed the installation of medication pumps to improve patient safety and streamline the medication administration process. The hospital has transitioned from their previous intravenous (IV) medication pumps to Sigma Smart Infusion Pumps, which improve drug error prevention and enable wireless connectivity on a multi-functional platform. “Medication safety is a key priority for our hospital,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System, Bradford Regional Medical

New OGH Safety InitiativeLocal Hospital Participating in National Medication Safety Initiative

Center and Olean General Hospital. “These new smart pumps ensure the appropriate flow and delivery of high risk medications. We made this significant investment to benefit our patients by enhancing our medication administration process and significantly reducing the risk of medication errors, which are a national concern.” Sigma Smart Pumps allow clinical staff to control flow rate and insure rates are within “best practice” parameters. The pumps have a pre-programmed drug library, which helps to ensure that correct dosages of high risk medications are dispensed to patients. Additionally, alerts and/or warnings are easily displayed and addressed, while

medication and pump settings can now be customized by care area. “The new infusion pumps have received positive feedback from our medical staff,” said William F. Mills, M.D., Senior Vice President of Quality and Professional Affairs at Upper Allegheny Health System. “Our multi-disciplinary planning committee, consisting of front-line staff members including hospital pharmacists, nurses, physicians and biomedical engineers, studied national best practices in effective installation, drug library development and data collection. Their research has helped advance clinical practices, improve patient safety and significantly enhance work flow for our staff.”

Wood Honored By County2011 Brooks Patterson Community Leadership Award Given

The Cattaraugus County Planning Board presented, at its July 27th Annual Dinner Meeting, the 2011 Brooks Patterson Community Leadership Award to Robert C. Wood for his outstanding leadership in community planning and development of a comprehensive plan for the Town of Carrollton in Cattaraugus County. The meeting was held at Countryside Sand and Gravel in South Dayton with 106 people in attendance. The topic of the evening was “The Importance of Mineral Resources and the Need to Plan”.

The recipients of this annual award are chosen to give countywide recognition to leaders and volunteers who make lasting contributions to the people and communities of Cattaraugus County and its region and who exemplify the outstanding spirit and example that Torrance Brooks and Donald Patterson set during their lifetime of dedicated service to their respective communities, County Legislature, County Planning Board, and regional agencies.

Mr. Wood is a member and Chairman of the Town of Carrollton Planning Board. Under his leadership, the Town Planning Board, with the assistance of the Cattaraugus County Planning staff and staff from the County Health Department, developed the

Town’s first Comprehensive Plan. This Plan was adopted by the Town of Carrollton in August 2010.

Mr. Wood has been employed by Cattaraugus County Community Action, the Cattaraugus County Department of Community Services, the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, and the Chautauqua County Mental Health Department. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Robert thanked the “team” that helped put together the Comprehensive Plan: the Town Planning Board, the County Planning Staff, and local leaders. He stated that “the Town is very unique since only 48% belongs to the Town with Allegany State Park to the west and the remainder divided by the Seneca Nation of Indians, the (Allegany) River and the Route 219 corridor.” He also thanked Linda Brown from Carrollton for all her help and the typing of the document.

The 2011 Brooks Patterson Community Leadership Award was presented to Robert C. Wood for his outstanding leadership in community planning and development of a comprehensive plan for the Town of Carrollton in Cattaraugus County.

Route 353 Bridge OpenedBridge Opened for Two-Way Traffic for First Time in Four Years

SALAMANCA - The state Department of Transportation has opened the new Route 353 Center Street Bridge over the Allegany River. Traffic will resume both northbound and southbound. However, contruction crews are expected to remain on the job for several weeks, and motorists are

reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. The former bridge was completed in 1940 and demolished in May 2010 to make way for the new $12.7 million structure. The new four-pier bridge will feature bicycle lanes and sidewalks on each side of the

bridge and a public-access fishing pier on the west side. It marks the first time in four years the bridge has been open for two-way traffic, having had several one-lane restrictions since 2007 due to deterioration. A ceremony to dedicate the reopened bridge is expected to be announced in the near future.

Flis Runs to EllicottvilleMan to Run from Grimsby to Ellicottville for Ronald McDonald House

Local runner Doug Flis is ready to take on a 100-mile challenge for charity. The 61 year old Grimsby resident is in training for his 100 Miles of Hope Run this September. Flis will be running from Grimsby to Ellicottville, New York over the course of two days to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Hamilton. He will be starting his run at noon from Fluid Fitness on September 16, and estimates it will take him 24 to 30 hours to reach Ellicottville. It’s not the first time Flis, who operates Grimsby Runners, has challenged himself to run such lengths. 20 years ago, he ran 112 miles in a similar charity run, and each year Flis partakes in his birthday run - running one mile for each year he’s been alive. Flis says he chose Ronald McDonald House because

they cover all illnesses, and 92 per cent of funds raised goes straight to funding and helping the children. He also adds that the money raised will be directly benefitting people from Guelph to Fort Erie. The Ronald McDonald house provides an emotionally supportive, comfortable and affordable “home away from home” for families of children who are seriously ill and being treated at McMaster Children’s Hospital or other area hospitals. The Saturday he arrives in Ellicottville also happens to be a celebration weekend, called “Oldies Weekend”, so those waiting for Flis to arrive will be entertained with live bands and parties in the streets. He planned his run for this date because he thinks of himself as an “oldie”, and that the event is fitting for him. Flis says he’s training hard for this monumental run, having

done a few 50 miles runs to Niagara Falls as well as numerous shorter length runs. Last week, he ran up and down Mountain Road 12 times at three in the morning in preparation. Flis is urging people to sponsor or pledge him and the event. Pledge forms can be picked up at Fluid Fitness, 28 Main St. E., or people can pledge online at www.grimsbyrunners.com. You can also Flis at 905-920-7866. He also invites local runners to join him for stretches of the run, and to raise pledges to help assist in raising money. Flis says anyone can join for any length they choose. Flis is a personal trainer at Fluid Fitness, and manages the Grimsby Runners Club. The club is open to all fitness and experience levels, and aims to help men and women become fit and healthy, offering walk/run and running clinics year round.

Reed For Budget Control Congressman Reed Voted in Favor of Budget Control Act of 2011

Congressman Tom Reed voted in favor of the Budget Control Act of 2011, the House plan to avoid a national default. The act passed the House of Representatives and moves on to the Senate for consideration. “The Budget Control Act of 2011 is not perfect,” Reed said. “Yet it is a reasonable approach toward reducing the threat to our credit rating by dealing with the borrowing and spending problem that got us into this

position in the first place. This plan prevents a national default. At the same time it forces us to adhere to spending cuts and caps moving forward.” “We must govern responsibly. We must stop spending money we don’t have,” Reed declared. “This bill is another step forward on the path that was begun in the 2010 elections. Our economy and job growth depend on the government getting its finances in order. It increases the

prospects of a future undimmed by the insecurity of massive national debt for our children and grandchildren.” “Beyond that, we are changing the culture here in Washington,” Reed continued. “This bill is part of a change to the way business has been done here for decades.” “I hope that the Senate and the President will act responsibly by passing this bill to address our national debt.”

Pottter Honored by OGHLocal Hospital Honors Tom Potter for 20 Years of Services

Olean General Hospital (OGH) officials recognized Tom Potter for more than 20 years of service on the hospital’s Diabetes Advisory Committee. As a Type 1 diabetes patient, Mr. Potter represented diabetes patients throughout the community, and assisted the committee in its focus to remain patient centered. “Tom has worked hard to improve the standard of living for diabetes patients throughout our community,” said Mary Fay, RD, CDE, Clinical Nutrition Manager at Olean General Hospital. “He has played a significant role on our Diabetes Advisory Committee and his contributions have steered the development of our diabetes program over the past two decades.” Olean General Hospital’s Diabetes Advisory Committee was established in 1991 to assist the hospital in its efforts to educate the community about diabetes. The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program is coordinated by Ms. Fay and Diabetes Educator Barbara Walker, RN, CDE, and was recently recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) with a renewal of

its prestigious Diabetes Recognition Certificate. “I was the classic diabetes patient who wanted to deny my disease and not comply with the medical plan to help me,” said Mr. Potter, the former chief executive officer of the Parent

Education Group. “If it weren’t for the staff at Olean General Hospital, I would not enjoy the excellent health I have now.” Olean General Hospital is a member of Upper Allegheny Health System. For more information, visit www.ogh.org.

Route 219 Bridge AwardedAllegany Announces Annual Party for August 12th, 2011

The U.S. Route 219 twin arch bridges over Cattaraugus Creek located in Concord, Erie County, and Ashford, Cattaraugus County, have been recognized with an award from the Association of Bridge Construction & Design (ABCD), Western New York Chapter. Completion of these bridges is a milestone in the development of the C-1 corridor, leaving just 20 miles to go in New York State. They carry northbound and southbound traffic over Cattaraugus Creek at the Zoar Valley Gorge. The design and construction of the bridges were a cooperative effort between NYSDOT Region 5 in Buffalo’s Design Unit C and other stakeholders,

including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, State Department of Environmental Conservation, State Historic Preservation Office and the Erie County Department

of Parks and Recreation. Cold Spring Construction Company of Akron, Erie County, was the construction contractor on the project.

The Rotary Club in Ellicot-tville recognized a need in the Ellicottville School District and surrounding Cattaraugus County. In 2005, they estab-lished the Rotary Club of Elli-cottville Foundation for Youth to address the needs of the less fortunate in the Ellicottville area. The Foundation in that same year joined forces with the new Ellicottville Memorial Library to establish a perma-nent Youth Center in the new Library Community Center. Beyond the Youth Center, the Rotary Club also supports a number of other worthy causes and activities for local youths. The club officially “kicked off” the funding for the Youth Center on June 25, 2004 with a Celebrity Dinner and Golf Tournament, following it with a second event in 2005. With the passing of Michael Kerns,

it was decided to dedicate an annual dinner to his memory and with the help of our local community members and busi-nesses, the past five events have been a tremendous success. In 2010, a great new event was set up with a Caribbean theme featuring a gourmet cocktail party under the sun and stars. “Another Day in Paradise,” a tribute to Michael Kerns is shaping up to be the event of the year. It will take place at Holiday Valley’s Tam-arack Pool Complex on Satur-day, August 27th, 2011. Last year’s party was a sellout and drew rave reviews from all who attended. This new event will continue to showcase the top restaurants in Ellicottville offering a specialty dish. This year the restaurants, hosted by John Harvard’s Brew House at Holiday Valley, will feature a

Caribbean-themed dish. Accomplishing the Rotary Club’s objectives will not be possible without the gener-ous support of sponsors. As a 501c3 Organization, contribu-tions made to the organization are tax deductible. The Rotary Club would greatly appreciate your support with a donation for this years Auction, which is a feature of the event. You or your company will be recog-nized as a sponsor at this year’s event, which last year attracted a sell-out crowd of over 200 people. If interested in donating or sponsoring the event, please call 716-699-6959. The Rotary Club will be happy to assist you with your participation in this most worthwhile project. Don’t hesitate on this oppor-tunity, it’s on of Ellicottville’s finest.

NWHR Raffle ExtendedNeighborworks Home Resources Sets Final Date for September 2nd

The drawing date has been extended for the NeighborWorks® Home Resources (NWHR) raffle to promote its new emergency repair program. The new deadline for raffle ticket sales is now September 2nd, 2011. The top prizes are a washer and a dryer. All money raised will provide help to low-income homeowners for small repairs. “As we work with homeowners on major repairs and rehab, we are seeing a real need for help with smaller problems; these could include broken stairs or windows, for example. We hope this raffle of home-related items will be a good start toward meeting this need in our local

area,” said NWHR Executive Director Mark Sabella. “And, as with all our programs, these projects provide jobs for our local contractors and sales of materials and supplies from our local businesses.” The ENERGY STAR General Electric washer and gas dryer, generously donated by the Olean Home Depot, are being raffled separately. The washer and dryer are on display in the window of the NWHR office, 209 North Union Street, Olean. In addition to the appliances, other prizes to be awarded include a vinyl replacement window donated by Union Sales Corp. of Olean, a $200

gift card for paint from the Olean location of Sherwin-Williams, two one-night stays at the Hampton Inn of Olean, and a $100 gift card for Olean’s Valu Home Center store. Raffle tickets cost $10.00 each, or two for $15.00, and can be purchased at the NWHR office at 209 N. Union St., Olean or from Staff or Board members. The drawing will be held on Friday, September 2nd at the NWHR office at 4:00 PM. Winners need not be present, but will have to arrange for their own washer or dryer delivery. For more information about the raffle, or NWHR programs, please call 716 373-4100.

Closing Night at the SquareTokyo Police Club and The Sheila Divine Wrap Up Thursday Series

Buffalo, New York – Playful indie rock quartet, Tokyo Police Club, will perform at Thursday at the Square on August 4th. The band was formed in Toronto in 2005 and according to the Los Angeles Times, the groups signature sound is like “being in love for the first time, in musical form - that kind of rush.” Prefixmag.com talks about their most recent album saying, “Skittery garagenew-wave-punk this is no longer, but this is as about as good as pop punk can get.” Alternative rock, 1980’s post-punk inspired The Sheila Divine will open for Tokyo Police Club. The band name was inspired by the Australian term, “Sheila” meaning “pansy” or “wimp” and a college friend named Sheila Devine and their solid fan base is often referred to as “the three B’s”: Boston, Buffalo and Belgium. Local artist Potter’s Field will open the final 25th Anniversary Thursday at the Square concert at the Erie Canal Harbor Central Wharf. Thursday at the Square is a ten-week, free-to-the-public

celebration of music, summer fun and Downtown Buffalo, produced by Buffalo Place Inc. The event draws record crowds into Downtown Buffalo and creates spin-off business for bars, restaurants and dance clubs. For every $1.00 invested into the concert series, $6.38 is returned into the local economy. For the thirteenth consecutive year, M&T Bank is the Presenting Sponsor of the Summer Concert Series. Once again, Labatt Blue Light is the Featured Act Sponsor and

official beer of the 2011 Summer Concert Series. Supporting Act Sponsors include Try-It Distributing, Coca-Cola and The Buffalo News – Gusto. The Villager is sponsoring a photography event for local amateur photographers called “A Day in the Life of Ellicottville.” Amateur photographers in the greater Ellicottville area are invited to participate in the project. September 6th is the day chosen for the event. The project is open to photographers of all ages and skill levels, but they must be available for some portion of the 24 hour period. Participants will fan out through the Village and Town to photograph the activities they find. The photographers will be asked to submit their ten best photographs to the paper. A panel of professional photographers will pair down the submissions to the four or five best photos from each photographer. The Villager will then set up a special web site for everyone to view and vote for the top thirty photos from the collection. The final thirty will then be printed and mounted for an exhibition possibly at the library or during Fall Festival. The three photographers whose photos garner the most votes will receive prizes. There will be one organizational meeting at the end of August for assigning areas to the photographers.

Any amateur photographer interested in participating should email the villager at; [email protected] “We thought this would be a great way to celebrate life in our great town,” says Jeanine Zimmer, publisher of The Villager. The decision to use amateur photographer stems from the fact that amateurs tend to be more spontaneous and creative than professional photographers, who sometime over think their photos. Also “we figured why let the professionals have all the fun,” added Dean Whitcomb of the paper. Allowing amateurs to shoot for the paper would give them a chance to see the life of a photojournalist, and gain

some recognition for their work. The popular Day in the Life of series of photo books pioneered by Time-Life books was the inspiration for event. Other organizations took up the idea publishing “A Day in the Life of Australia” and other locations. Photographer Rick Smolan once organized a project called “24 Hours in Cyberspace,” which at the time was the largest online event in history. A Day in the Life of Ellicottville is being sponsored by The Villager and LightSong Photography. As far as anybody is aware this is one of the few times a day in the life of project has been organized on a local level.

Past performances range from New York City’s only dinner theater “The Little Hippodrome” to the State Department in Washington, DC. He is also the chief meteorologist at WKBWTV. The Sunshine Boys by Neil Simon was first produced on Broadway in 1972 and won several Tony awards. The play focuses on aging Al Lewis and Willy Clark, a one-time vaudevillian team known as “Lewis and Clark” who, over the course of forty-odd years, not only grew to hate each other but never spoke to each other off-stage throughout the final year of their act. The stubborn Clark, who was not ready for

retirement, resented the wiser Lewis for breaking up the act when he opted to leave show business. It is now 1972 and CBS is inviting the team to reunite for a special on the history of comedy, with the pair representing the vaudeville era at its best. Clark is convinced by his nephew Ben to revive one of the old routines one last time. The auditions call for three men 25 to 45 years old, one woman nurse 25 to 40 years old, and one woman nurse 35 to 55 years old but the parts are very flexible and multiple parts may be played by the same actor. Performances run October 20 to 31 at Springville Center for the Arts. Scripts are available at the Center. For more info. or to schedule alternate audition times please call 592-9038.

Shooting with SnoopSBU Player Featured in Olympics Ad with Snoop Dogg, Warren G

LONDON - In advance of the London 2012 Olympics, former men’s basketball player Ogo Adegboye ‘11 is featured with rap stars Snoop Dogg and Warren G in an Adidas advertisement for the Games. Adegboye (wearing No. 6 in blue), a two-year member of the Bonnies, was called up to the Great Brittain senior men’s team last summer, where he earned a starting

spot in helping GB qualify for this summer’s Eurobasket Championships in Lithuania. He led the nation in minutes per game (39.0) in his final season at St. Bonaventure and averaged 11.2 points per game to help SBU to its first winning record and postseason appearance since 2001-02. The advertisement features a 3-on-3 pickup game with members of the national team

squaring off against the rap stars and reigning world-champion triple jumper Phillips Idowu. Marketing Director for Adidas UK, Nick Craggs said: “To celebrate one year to go we wanted to give the consumers a glimpse of what to expect from adidas over the next 12 months and capture the imagination of those who are perhaps not yet engaged by the Olympics.”

BY DOug ARROWSmITH

We can learn a lot from Zombie movies. “Uh, what?” You’re probably asking yourself right now. It’s true. George Romero, the Godfather of the genre has always used his films as veiled commentaries on modern society. The original “Night of the Living Dead” tackled racism in America. “Dawn of the Dead” was an attack on rampant consumerism and “Land of the Dead” was really a commentary on distribution of wealth. The later takes place years after the original outbreak of the virus that precipitated the Zombie apocalypse. It portrayed a society where the “uber-rich” lived in towering skyscrapers, protected by armies and walled compounds. They were provided-for by serfs and average citizens that foraged for supplies outside the walls in exchange for an illusion of protection and normalcy. Eventually, of course, this flawed system failed and the Zombies had themselves a nice meal. Which, of course, brings me to our current financial crises. What? You

didn’t see that coming? Every sci-fi book or movie I’ve ever seen or read that portrays a flawed future always builds its story on the same premise. There’s a wealth distribution issue that allows a few to control a lot while the rest of the world falls victim to whatever evil has rendered us the subject of said book or movie. And so it is. While our current crop of elected idiots argue to an impasse on how to handle the financial crises in America the answer is right in front of them. They just refuse to acknowledge it because to do so would be biting the hands that literally feed them. In today’s America the top one percent of the population controls a whopping forty-two percent of all the financial wealth in the country. That’s the largest income gap since the Great Depression, which speaks volumes about where we’re at as a people. In contrast, the bottom ninety percent of the population has been saddled with seventy-three percent of the nations debt. Welcome to the Land of the Dead. The new “serf-dom.” Those striking figures, some would have you believe, are simply a reflection of the so-called American way. Whatever. The top one percent of society has seen their incomes rise eighteen percent over the past decade while those in the middle have actually seen their income fall. Yet, for some unfathomable reason, the idea of ending the Bush era tax cuts for the super rich seems to render the GOP apoplectic. The idea of raising taxes for those who can afford to pay them actually sends

them running for their flags, guns and bibles. What’s the GOP’s plan? Spending cuts of course. That makes perfect sense depending on where those cuts are made. The GOP, however, wants to make sure that those cuts don’t affect their grubby little benefactors. Paul Ryan’s deficit reduction plan, for instance, included a major restructuring of Medicare but protected the Bush tax cuts for the super rich. Every single one of his talking points included cuts that would affect the middle class and the working poor. That upper one percent I’ve been talking about? Their free ride is left intact. The striking thing about our current financial crises is how many people have actually fallen for the GOP scam. The current bogymen on the right are civil servants and the unions that represent them. The recent attacks on these unions and their rights to collectively bargain have come from all sides while people like the Koch brothers in Wisconsin sit in their ivory towers rubbing their hands together like old Hollywood villains. But, much like the end of Romero’s “Land of the Dead” the house of cards is about to fall. Eventually, as people begin to see the lies behind things like the tired Tea Party movement and failed Bush Era tax cuts, the working class is finally going to say enough is enough and leave the walls undefended. When that happens the Zombies are going to have themselves a nice meal and the rest of us are going to stand by and applaud. [email protected].

Saturday mornings!

Over at the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director Brian McFadden is rolling out the welcome mat. “We expect about six thousand folks totally including 2,300 competitors.” He estimates the economic impact on Cattaraugus County at about $3,000,000. “It’s really a big deal (because people) spend a lot of money here.” McFadden is quick to point out you don’t have to be a pro to have a good time. There’s an event within the championship event called the Holiday Valley Bow Hunters Open. If you want to try your hand at bow hunting, now’s your chance. “You don’t have to qualify. You just sign up and shoot the same course as the qualifiers do. McFadden notes that

registrations for the Championships “are up” and the vendor show opens August 10th. “We’ll have about sixty-five or seventy vendors,” some of whom will appeal to other interests besides bow hunting. Then there’s the fun set for Thursday and Friday evening at Holiday Valley’s Tannenbaum Lodge, starting around 5 o’clock.“It’s the spectator side of it, we’ll have shoot offs.” Participants try to win prizes like Rolex watches, all-terrain vehicles, or “whatever they’re shooting for that night.” They will be able to enjoy a chicken barbecue and relax at the bar, and “enjoy these pros and semi-pros shooting for prizes.” Those taking part in the Championship stay for the better part of a week. McFadden says that because participants come from all over the country and the world, they “typically bring their families and make it a vacation.” People will start

filtering in this Saturday. The pros get in some practice time at Holiday Valley’s defense ranges, which are practice ranges. Anyone is welcome to use them. “You get prizes out there too.” The final Championship rounds take place August 13th. At Holiday Valley, they’re busy getting the courses ready. Marketing Director Jane Eshbaugh says the kids will not be forgotten, as there will be plenty of activities for children. “They’re happy while the parents are down on the courses.” And the public is welcome to check out a trade show. “They’ll have bows, targets, and anything you would need if you’re interested in bow hunting.” It’s outdoors, with various companies setting up booths. This is the fourth year Holiday Valley has hosted the Bow Hunters Championship. “It brings a lot of people to town and is great for the whole area.”

KidsDepartment, and there will be free snow cones for all ages. The Rotary will be selling hot dogs and Johnny Barber will be giving funky haircuts (to the kids). Other ongoing activities

will be a petting zoo and horse and pony rides. Scheduled entertainment will start with Glen Colton, who sings songs to delight the younger set, and magic by Michael Johnson. In the afternoon there will be something called Gravitational Bull Juggling (details weren’t available at press time, but it’s

sure to be interesting). The Folk Art Festival is being folded into the Kids Fest. Artists to be featured will be Bob McCarthy, with his outdoor art, Liza Hitchcock showing her birdhouses, and rustic furniture made the kids from the Allegheny School. Watch next weeks Villager for more details.

Community Bank, NA ‘Banks’ the Rally in the Valley for 2011Olean’s Rally in the Valley

Community Bank, NA is proud to be the Thursday night sponsor of the 9th Annual Rally in the Valley. The Rally in the Valley, to be held August 25-28, is a motorcycle fundraiser event, which benefits a host of local organizations. Community Bank is a wholly owned national banking subsidiary of Community Bank System, Inc. (CBSI), and is the second-largest commercial banking franchise headquartered in Upstate New York. It is a full-service financial institution, offering complete consumer, business, and financial services. Community Bank will be the sponsor of a new day with the Rally; Thursday’s Banking on a Good Time Street Dance. The dance, a family affair, will be located downtown on Laurens Street at North Union Street. The band, Wildfire will entertain throughout the dance with hours 7 – 10 PM. This year marks the first year the rally will expand into four-days. In 2008, the event went to three-days. “We’re proud to be involved in the addition of a street dance during the Rally in the Valley,” said Dick Heidrick,

SVP at Community Bank. “The Rally is a family-focused event and what better way to show off downtown but with this new event in the heart of downtown.” This year marks the 9th anniversary of the event hosted by the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce and the Olean Motorcycle Enthusiasts. Rally in the Valley was introduced to the area by local business leaders who saw what other communities have done with similar events and wanted to bring that same type of experience to Olean. They knew the event would draw many people from outside the area and the longer they ran the event the larger it would grow. In addition, they knew there were many bikers in this area that would love an event like this that was close to home. Since 2003, the event has grown: in terms of number of days held (2-4); number of dice run participants (149 - 683); number of contests (3-6); and spectators (2,500 - 6,230). “We have gone to great lengths and take great pride in the fact that our Rally in the Valley continues to be an event that

all members of the family can attend. We get a great feeling just seeing little kids walking with dad and mom looking at all of the motorcycles. It is a great feeling to be able to take a hobby that we are so passionate about, and use it to make money for some very worthy people around Olean. We are very thankful for the continued support we receive from the great people of Olean and the Chamber of Commerce,” stated the chairs of the Rally event, Dennis Jones, Randy Langdon, Dan Jordan, Larry Penman, and Alan Roth. Through the 8th annual Rally in the Valley, we have been able to give more than $116,000.00 to local charities,” said Rally Co-Chair Dennis Jones. The charities that will benefit this year include the Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center; the ReHabilitation Center; the Dempsey Club; Olean Airport Support Group; Mercy Flight; and Southern Tier Military Support Group. For more information on the Annual Rally in the Valley, call Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce at 716-372-4433 or email [email protected].
