“which one do I do”? Well, it depends… The annual Great Valley Firemen’s Regatta is ready to rock this weekend, with over 3,300 participants looking forward to this annual rite of spring. More than 1,500 boats, rafts, and (basically) anything that floats will be plying the waters of Great Valley Creek on Saturday at 9 am. Thankfully for the “boaters” there will be pit stops along the way to make sure these dedicated paddlers won’t die of thirst. You don’t have to drink beer, but I understand it aids in your paddling technique. Coming up next weekend is Gowanda’s Zoar Valley fest: you can read about fully on this week’s cover. The popular, family friendly event is put on

by the Gowanda Chamber as a fun way to introduce and educate the public about all the great things Gowanda and the Zoar Valley Region have to offer. Spectacular vistas, world class Steelhead fishing, white water rafting, kayaking, stores, shops and a score of excellent restaurants are just a few of the things visitors can expect when they get there. So, dear readers, whether you “Gotta Regatta” or “Gotta Gowanda” just make sure you and your family aren’t sitting around the hacienda these next two weekends. All work and no play make for a really long work week to follow. You wouldn’t want that now, would you? Until next week! Jeanine Zimmer

The little red schoolhouse is one of those iconic memories that none of us really has. The day of the single room school is long since past, and yet when we see one it conjures nostalgic feelings of a remote rural past. A vision that is complete with images of barefoot kids, carrying a satchel suspended from a stick over their shoulder, as they wend their way to class. Huckleberry Finn on a good day. What could be more

nostalgic than living in one? Just five minutes from downtown this piece of history, built in 1900, has been lovingly converted to a three-bedroom two-bath charmer. Freshly painted with the traditional red, the home sits on just over an acre of park-like land that includes a detached two-car garage, and a studio shed. The back yard has a sunny patio, and a custom built pond with a waterfall and live fish. The inside has been completely remodeled. The kitchen has new granite counter-tops, and beautiful oak cabinets. The dining

room table is in a cozy corner by the sliding glass window to the 3 acre back yard. Just off the kitchen is a family room with a pellet stove and an entertainment center. The sunny master bedroom is on the main floor, and features a good-sized master bath. The laundry is on this floor as well. Upstairs are two more bedrooms and a large game room. It’s big enough to host a game table, a wide screen TV and a home office. A wood stove warms the room and you can relax on the balcony that overlooks the pond. It’s hard to imagine anything nicer than capturing this piece of history, and especially one that harkens back to a simpler place and time. Even better is that it’s located in one of the best recreation areas anywhere: with golf, skiing, biking and our own historic downtown. Music SpotlightChecking Out The Tunes & Other Stuff In Ellicottville

Written By:Robby & Sherman Wilkens

We are entering May and our great summer weather is emerging. This weekend, The Great Valley Firemen’s Ya Gotta Regatta will be the main FUN-producing event happening in our neighborhood. Floating crafts of all shapes and sizes manned by contestants from several states and Canada will be launched in The Great Valley Creek creating the focal point of this wildly FUN weekend happening. For more information on this event check with the events web site, www.yagottaregatta.com. The other FUN STUFF happening in and around Ellicottville will also be intensifying, such as golf and other outdoor happenings. The golf conditions at both Holiday Valley and Elkdale Country Club are shaping up rapidly. Call either location for a T time, then get out and enjoy the FUN that a round of golf brings to those that play. Our weekly line up of music and other FUN stuff, beginning Friday May 2, 2013 and continuing through Thursday May 8, 2013 will, besides The Ya Gotta Regatta, include nine Bands, three DJ’s, one with a Karaoke show as part of the gig, a couple of Sound System Music Events plus all of the excellent food and beverage specials offered by our wonderful clubs and restaurants. Madigans will have their Sound System playing Madigans Party Favorites beginning around 7:00 PM most evenings of the week. Then at 10:00 PM Club Madigans will take over increasing the FUN & GOOD TIMES till close. This weekend will be the warm-up weekend for Big Ken & Chance’s Mothers Day Bash, which will happen on Friday May 10, 2013. The Untouchables will provide the music for this really FUN celebration and party night. THURSDAY, the week kicks off with one band and a DJ including a Karaoke show. The FUN begins at 8:00 PM in The Gin Mill with Fred & Tuck doing their excellent and good time acoustic, folk rock to country music show. FUN cover tunes performed in their unique style will, again, create a really FUN Gin Mill Music Night.

Then at 9:00 PM Thursday, The PUB in Great Valley will bring on DJ Felony, and his Karaoke Show. As always, this neat show gives The PUB Patrons two options. Be part of the show or just kick back and enjoy The Local & FUN PUB Good Times. Moving to FRIDAY, a three band and a DJ night. Balloons starts us off at 7:00 PM with the return The Funktional Flow. This four-piece band was here last February and is a driving force within Buffalo’s music scene. From their website and our past experience, “The Flow can take you from a reggae style upbeat vibration to unique funky blues jam at the drop of a dime”. They are enjoyed by audiences of all ages. Like we have said before, Balloons will be ROCKIN again this Friday night. Following The Functional Flow, the FUN carries on from Balloons Sound & Light Booth with DJ Frightening Frank, who also doubles as Ellicottville’s Party Monster, doing his all ages friendly show including neat danceable tunes and FUN chit/chat till close. Returning to 9:00 PM Friday, The Gin Mill will have RT Live in house. As most of us know, RT does an acoustic solo gig consisting of mainly classic rock. However, he also will show a bit of a country twist to a number of his cover tunes, which adds to the FUN happening in The Gin Mill. Also remember, The Gin Mill serves their wonderful, reasonably priced menu till midnight on weekends. Also at 9:00 PM Friday The PUB in Great Valley will have Roll The Dice on board as part of their Ya Gotta Regatta celebration. Here we have a local, retro, classic rock to country band. Their music, consisting of everything from the Rock A Billy era through the eighties, has a bit of a country sound or twist. The interesting combination of music they produce will add to the FUN Times Happenin in The PUB this Friday. Now on to SATURDAY, where we have another three band and a DJ evening. Balloons will start the FUN at 6:00 PM with a performance by The Strangers. This Ellicottville Favorite Band is a four-piece group featuring Mitch on lead vocals & bass, Jerry on lead guitar & vocals, Bud on keys & vocals and drummer, vocalist, Jeff, The Beaver, are continuing on with their new music mix. This new mix is enhancing and moving their neat classic rock sound forward. The Strangers, as they always do, will again put on a really FUN show Following The Strangers DJ Flakey Frank, The Party Monster, will return to Balloons Sound & Light Booth. Frank, now a resident on a two day leave from The Disoriented DJ Home, will again show off his party skills with a FUN & danceable selection of

tunes, and his all-ages’ friendly chitter/chatter till close. Returning to 9:00 PM Saturday, when The Olean Band West will be ROCKIN The Gin Mill. West has performed in Ellicottville for over fifteen years. Ron and Terry, the driving force of West, always put on an excellent Classic, Rock N Roll Show. Their tunes, mainly cover from the last several decades, are done in True West Style. This Gin Mill Regular Band will, as they always do, have the house ROCKIN. Also at 9:00 PM and adding to the FUN of The Ya Gotta Regatta, The PUB in Great Valley, will host a new band for our neighborhood, Screamin’ Lou, This three-piece, soulful, rockin blues, dance band, plays cover tunes from the likes of Jimmy Hendricks, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton and Cream, plus many more soulful artists whose music you can feel all the way to your soul. Another FUN music night is on the way to The PUB this Saturday. Adding to the FUN will be their special chicken BBQ. SUNDAY will be recovery day and music free. Moving to MONDAY, which, as of now, is a one-band evening. However, The Meal Deals are still happenin. The Gin Mill, while music free, will offer their great menu including their wonderful spaghetti dinner. With Crasher Conner on bar duty, The Gin Mill will be a FUN to be this Monday. Balloons Monday Delights will also take place. Balloons great pizza & fifty cent wings plus their happy hour drink specials will be available and hosted by Domino Derrick. Lovely Tiffany is still on leave and will be missed. Monday rounds out at 10:00 PM Sharp with Madigans Church on Monday taking place. Reverend Jack and Deacon Dan will again be doing their original Honky Tonk to Rock-A-Billy tunes in their own FUN and entertaining way. If this Monday is anything like last Monday, Madigans upstairs Party Bar will really be BOPPIN, WEAVIN & ROCKIN. . WEDNESDAY at 8:00 PM our week’s final music gig happens in The Gin Mill with Joe Wagner &Friends doing their traditional and almost thirty-year stint of their acoustic folk to southern rock music show. Joe’s friends usually include Bongos Freddie and Gary London. As always, Retro Little Joey is also a probable friend. The music & good times in The Gin Mill are further enhanced by their excellent chicken wings, which are among Wednesday’s specials. C U Round The Music Scene Good Stuff No Worries With Personable DJ John Barry doing his LIVE Personality Show Off Show. As always, John’s show will include neat danceable tunes and FUN chitter/chatter till close.

Inside Business TrackEllicottville Oasis Spa - Xtreme Lashes

By SharoN turaNo

An “escape from the pressures of modern life” can be found at Ellicottville’s Oasis Spa, where eyelash extensions have been added to the spa’s list of relaxing menu services. Joanne Timkey, esthetician and spa manager, is a certified lash stylist with Xtreme Lashes. According to the lash company’s website, www.

xtemelashes.com, it offers “larger, thicker, luscious and natural-looking” lashes. They are synthetic strands applied one-by-one, with medical-grade adhesive. Touch-ups are needed every two to four weeks. “You can wake up in the morning looking fabulous,” Joanne said about why people may want to try the lashes. Mascara, she said, is no longer needed when using them. She went through days worth of training to become certified to apply the lashes and will continue with other ongoing classes to remain up-to-date on their use. The lash extension treatments are just one of many services offered by the Ellicottville Oasis Spa, where clients can also enjoy massage therapy, “DUO” couples massage, hot stone massage, therapeutic sports massage, pre-natal massage, facials, body treatments, waxing, manicures and pedicures. Gift Cards can also be purchased in any dollar amount and can be delivered electronically for last minute shoppers. The spa’s website, www.e l l i c o t t v i l l e o a s i s . c o m , provides a more-detailed description about all of the

spa’s services, which are provided by New York state-licensed professionals. “This is a place where your mind and body can get away from it all,” states the website, adding the spa allows clients to focus on “enhancing their health and vitality in a free-spirited environment.” “Relaxation is the word,” said Joanne, describing what clients can find as they enter the doors of the spa. Those doors opened in the fall of 2004 after she realized the need for a full-service day spa in Ellicottville. The four-season resort town sees many visitors that come for skiing, golfing, weddings, girlfriend get-a-ways, honeymoons, corporate visits and more, she said. Village patrons can also visit the Ellicottville Oasis Spa, which will enter its 10th year of business this fall and features nine treatment rooms, handicapped-accessibility and private parking. The spa is open year-round, Tuesdays to Saturdays and select Sundays and Mondays. To make an appointment for any of the spa’s services, including the new eyelash extensions, call 699-8996 or book on-line at their website.

score of excellent restaurants are just a few of the things visitors can expect when they get there. Festival start time is 11am, and event headquarters are at Creekside Park which is located behind the Shop N’ Save grocery store on the sharp turn of Route 39 and 62 (Buffalo Street). Gowanda Chamber Treasurer and Festival Chairman Megan Pankow-Walker says there are a quite a few new additions to this year’s activities. “Building on last year’s successful event, we decided to add more unique outdoor related activities and vendors to this years festival to really showcase what Gowanda and the Zoar Valley region has to offer”, Pankow-Walker said. Here’s a rundown of the days activities: • The Army National Guard will be at Creekside Park with their giant Rockwall set up and ready to scale.• 45 Minute Carriage rides over the Gorge will be available from Misty Ridge Carriage Rides. Call Misty Ridge at 716-532-5859 to reserve a ride.• The N.Y. State DEC will be at Creekside with their Back Yard Bass and Fish Pond. A great way to learn how to cast and reel in a fishing line by tossing out plastic lures and trying to catch Velcro fish images. Lots of fun for the whole family! DEC staffers will also be glad to talk about the excellent Steelhead Trout fishing that can be found on Cattaraugus

Creek.• The Zoar Valley Paddling Club will be on the water all day in their canoes, kayaks and rafts demonstrating proper fast water techniques and welcome visitors to give it a try free of charge -just ask!• Excursion Train rides over the gorge will be available throughout the day. one.” The featured artist will be Todd Plough of Ellicottville, well known for his nature landscapes. They will also have woodworkers, photographers, and jewelry makers, “Along with all kinds of hand crafts that people take pride in,” according to Mrs. Smith. The general admission price into the park will include the Arts and Crafts Show. Admission is $4.50 for adults, $3.75 for seniors, and $2.50 for children ages 6-12, while kids five and under get in free. During the show, with Sunday being Mothers Day, mom gets in free as well. Cindy Smith notes that she and her husband, Dale, have owned Rock City Park about eleven years. The family is well known in the community, as

the Worth W. Smith hardware family. Their son, Nate Smith, now runs the family business, which leaves the older Smiths, “Sort of semi-retired.” Mrs. Smith is quick to point out that they have been busy improving the park. “We added a 5,000 square foot building to what we had, which has allowed us to have a nice museum, as well as a gift shop and souvenir shop. And we sell refreshments. We have a nice picnic pavilion. It (the park) is a really unusual place and a great place to own.” If you are interested in the history of the park, you can find that in the museum. Mrs. Smith notes that in the early 1900s, people visited the park by train in the thousands. You can watch a video that describes the period, which also saw construction of a huge hotel, a dance pavilion, a tennis court, and guest speakers. “I always say it was a precursor to Disney World, because people came from far and wide to visit the park.” Some of the vendors who take

part in the Arts and Crafts show have come back repeatedly because they really enjoy it, according to Cindy Smith. And the show is very family oriented. Some of the Smith grandchildren, who are ten and under, are going to have a table. “The children have been busy making little crafts, in the Smith tradition of doing retail.” In the course of owning Rock City Park, the Smiths have done a number of fundraisers, including two or three for the Southern Tier Symphony, plus Halloween parties and dances. “The venue is really good!” The Rock City Arts and Crafts Show is supported by the Greater Olean and Bradford Chamber of Commerce, and Cattaraugus County Tourism. Vendors can contact Theresa Smith at [email protected], or at 716-560-8562. Additional information about the park, directions, and vendor registration forms can be found at www.rockcitypark.com., or by calling 716-372-7790.

Since last fall, the Ellicottville team has been working on a challenge from NASA to create a humorous performance about two main characters that act naturally to themselves but appear to be strange to others. The team must also perform

in a “spontaneous problem” that tests their ability to solve a problem quickly and with little preparation. The creators of the program wanted Odyssey of the Mind to be a way to teach students how to work together as a team while thinking critically. According to the official website, Odyssey of the Mind is the largest worldwide, creative problem-solving tournament. The team’s faculty advisor,

Colleen Bower said, “This team is very deserving of the title ‘State Champions.’ The members are bright and creative. I have known these talented young people for many years. I am very proud of them and their accomplishments.” For more information visit www.odysseyofthemind.com, www.nysoma.org or www.caboces.org or call CABOCES Student Programs at 716-376-8284.

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.

Good luck!
