UPDATE FROM LOU our Volunteer Coordinator

As time goes by, this saying means more and more to

me. It’s so important to enjoy today, not worry about what happened yesterday or what is going to take place tomorrow.

Joint Commission Reminder As usual, things are busy all over the hospital and with the Foundation. We are still awaiting the visit from the Joint Commission and the time is getting closer. Just remember that if you are asked any questions by a Joint Commission inspector, the answer may be on the back of your badge. Remember RACE and PASS and definitely what the different codes are.

Foundation Update At the Foundation the office is abuzz planning for multiple upcoming events to benefit our hospital.

• While not for several months, planning is well underway for the 13th Annual Hearts for Our Hospital Gala to be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Savannah Center. Based on discussions thus far, the gala themed, “Serengeti Sunset,” promises to be an event to remember!

• Also on the forefront is The Big Bike Weekend, scheduled for November 9 and 10 at the La Hacienda Recreation Center. This event will feature five route options (10, 20, 32, 64, and 100 miles) for cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

• To help support our mission Cebert Wealth Management is hosting three Charity Golf Tournaments (October 8, 11 & 22) at the Country Club of Ocala.

The cost to participate is $50 and includes 18-holes, lunch and awards afterwards. This is open to all who love the game of golf.

Again proceeds from these events come to the Auxiliary Foundation. There is more information on these events in this Hummingbird issue.

A Recruitment Event On October 27th we will host a recruitment event for prospective volunteers in the Atrium above the surgical waiting lobby from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. If you have family or friends that might be interested in volunteering, please tell them to come visit us on this date. As of today, we have over 95 open shifts so we can definitely use help.

Year to date our volunteers have provided 116,891 hours of service to The Villages® Regional Hospital. My grateful thanks to each of you for the time you give to our Hospital!

If you have any questions or suggestions for me, please email them to [email protected]. I love to hear from you. We have the BEST VOLUNTEERS anywhere.

YESTERDAY IS HISTORY, TOMORROW IS A MYSTERY AND TODAY IS A GIFT,

THAT’S WHY IT’S CALLED “THE PRESENT.”

SMILES ARE INFECTIOUS,

KEEP SMILINGCan you believe we are into October? September 23, 2018 was the

first day of Autumn, but the Summer is still with us. Hopefully, soon we will be having cool weather. As we all know October is a beautiful month with the changing of the leaves, coolness in the air and of course"Halloween." We also welcome our "Snow Birds" back.

Flu season will be upon us, so please get your Flu Shots, whether here in the Hospital or someplace else, this is important. Please bring your information into the Day Captain's Office and then in a week or so you will receive your green sticker to place

on your badge.

Again, as I was looking through our Membership Handbook, I came across

"Dress and Appearance" which is on pages 9 & 10. Take a moment and check to see that you are following our Auxiliary Requirements. It is a pleasure to see you dressed in your uniforms as I walk through the Hospital. Your appearance is important to the Hospital.

Thank You for all you do as Volunteers for our Auxiliary. Keep up the good work.

Children visiting the emergency room are often treated to a stuffed teddy or dog or doll, thanks to Lynn Nichols and a Villages club called "Busy Hands, Happy Hearts." ED Admit volunteers in the waiting room keep a stash for kids who not only need a doctor, but also may often be waiting with parents or grandparents. Lynn regularly begins her Saturday morning shift by loading the “stash” with a garbage bag full of those welcoming treats.

Stocking emergency rooms though has been Lynn’s job and her passion for more than seven years. Other ED volunteers know that she goes above and beyond her job description. Recently she created labels for all of the rooms, created an order sheet for refrigerator supplies and created more little jobs for herself, such as cleaning the lockers in the breakroom and training a new recruit. She often meets with administrators, offers advice, takes suggestions and implements newer, faster, better methods of maintaining all of those rooms.

“I find satisfaction in knowing that the rooms are clean and ready for the next patient, and I’m helpful to the nursing staff,” she said. “I love delivering those urinals!”

Volunteering suits Lynn’s current interests because for 21 years, Lynn and her husband worked in Tokyo, Japan, at a private international middle school where she set up the computers for students and faculty; hence, her current disavowal of all technology. Her social work degree in Wisconsin, though, prepared her for helping patients and visitors. “I get a lot of personal satisfaction in being able to help people,” she added. “In often unpredictable situations, I can listen to people and provide comfort and information.”

Lynn’s knowledge of the hospital comes from over 1300 hours served, one year in Patient Care and more than seven years in the Emergency Department. She also greets

nurses, doctors, technicians and custodians throughout her shift and understands each role in the complicated process of tending to sudden injuries and illnesses.

Lynn’s not all about the hospital, though. She travels, recently to Switzerland and Wisconsin, next to Germany. And, she serves as treasurer to the Busy Hands, Happy Hearts club whose members knit, crochet, and sew for over 25 charities like Shepherd’s Lighthouse, Voices for Children, nursing homes and Hospice.

Like the childrens' lives she touches with those little stuffed dolls, Lynn’s touch throughout the Emergency Room is always noticed nd appreciated. ~~Submitted by Peggy Keaton Roche

I’ve grouped the graphic & the text so you can easily resize the logo. Your Café graphic can appear on your copy and somewhere on the ad / collateral you must include the logo.

We can’t change the font of the logo and if the logo is used in print (external usage) we must have the disclaimer included on the bottom

THE VILLAGES is a federally registered trademark of Holding Company of The Villages, Inc., and is used under license. The Villages® Regional Hospital is a part of Central Florida Health.

Note: Once you settle on 1 graphic it should be used on all collateral (ads, flyers, coupons)…wherever possible – you’re the TVRH Café -

We would imagine that each of you, at some point in your lives, have heard stories about teens that make you think or say, “what is the world coming to”? Well, please read on, this is NOT one of those stories.

Meet Zach Edelman, summer teen volunteer. Zach has lived in The Villages for more than 8 years. He wanted to volunteer at TVRH because his mom is a nurse at the hospital and she thought it would be a rewarding place to volunteer. Like many of Mom’s suggestions, she was correct, and Zach believes it has been a very rewarding experience.

When he interviewed with George Councilman, he chose the Cafe because he wanted to gain retail experience and that area seemed like a good way to serve people. In addition to volunteering in the Café, Zach also volunteered in the Supply Chain Department.

Once his summer intern volunteering opportunities ended, Zach decided to continue volunteering in the Café because he wanted to make sure he had enough volunteer hours to be eligible for numerous college scholarships. He is grateful to be volunteering at the Cafe to obtain those hours, but more importantly, to help serve the community.

When asked about his favorite part of volunteering in the Café, Zach said he gets to make people very happy because he has learned they love the freshly baked cookies and the Starbucks coffee. He also said it has been interesting getting to know some of the employees as well as family members of the patients.

He volunteers at the Café on Sundays during the 12:00-4:00 pm shift with Kathy Weber. Kathy was thrilled that Zach continues volunteering during her shift. “Zach is a conscientious, intelligent, personable gentleman and best of all, the customers love him. I’m blessed to have Zach working with me.”

Zach also appreciates working with Kathy.

“She is very kind, helpful, and really enjoys being a volunteer”.

In his spare time, Zach enjoys building models and playing video games. He also likes watching car racing at the dirt tracks.

We are grateful to have such a positive teen volunteer as part of our team in the Café. If you’re ever in the hospital on Sunday afternoon, please stop by the Café and thank Zach for his continued service to TVRH Café!
