Students Encouraged to do their Best

Every K-2nd grade class at Kermit King Elementary "adopted" a 3rd – 5th grade class to support through state CAASPP testing. Principal Kelly Ward says that “it has been a powerful way for ALL students and teachers to be involved in promoting our best efforts! We are proud of all of our Frogs!” Best of luck to all our students taking the CAASPP (California Academic Assessment of Student Performance and Progress).

Georgia Brown Tradition Georgia Brown Elementary 1st grade students demonstrated cultural dances from Mexico in an annual tradition. Parents came out to watch in the morning and then the students performed again in the evening during open house. Great job, Tigers!

PRO Academy Helping Students Pursue Their Passion Taylor Olcott is a PRO Academy student who exemplifies how a flexible schedule can benefit students in our district. Taylor is an incredible polo player and her sport requires quite a bit of training and travel. Taylor needed a flexible school schedule to allow her to travel, complete, but still maintain good grades and attendance. She has done all of this and more! We are really proud of Taylor and all she has accomplished this year!

“Love Buckets” Filled Mrs. Marziello’s kindergarten class at Kermit King Elementary filled up "love buckets" at Brookdale Senior Living Center. The students showered the residents with flowers, candy, and cards.

Student Wins Essay Contest PRHS student, Gavin Hughes, recently won The Morro Bay National Estuary Program Poetry Contest. He submitted a free verse poem called “The Osprey” that impressed the judges and won first place in the youth division. You can read his poem here: http://www.mbnep.org/blog. There will be a celebratory reading tonight at 7 p.m. at Coalesce Bookstore on Main Street in Morro Bay. The youth and adult contest winners will read, as well as the contest judges. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP.org) is a local nonprofit that hosts an annual poetry contest focused on the Morro Bay estuary and the surrounding lands.

Open House Open House at Paso Robles High School was held this week. Open house is a celebration of student work from the entire school year. The evening featured performances from the drama, dance, choir, and band programs. Many clubs were on hand to share information about their organizations. The various departments had activities and demonstrations. And the grand opening of the PRHS Student Store was held with an official ribbon cutting from the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce.

Farm Field Trip Students from Pat Butler Elementary took a walking field trip over to PRHS last week. The students got a chance to visit with the PRHS FFA students. While there, they took a tour of the farm area and got to meet some of the animals.

STEAM Mrs. Wilcox’s 1st grade class at Virginia Peterson Elementary has been working as acoustical engineers. They have been busy testing materials to dampen the sound produced by the rubber bands they used to make simple guitars. Their exploration of sound in this STEAM unit has been engaging and has provided the means for them to utilize the Engineering Design Process.

Winifred Pifer Elementary 3rd grade students use d the Engineering Design Process to create model membranes to keep their fictional frogs alive. The activity is from the California Math and Science Projects "Engineering is Elementary."

Mrs. Farrell’s 4th grade class at Winifred Pifer Elementary continued their work as Geotechnical Engineers by using models to test soil at potential erection site locations for a TarPul bridge. They will analyze the data collected and give final recommendations to the builders as to the best location along the river to erect the TarPul. The students tested organic and rocky soils and then conducted compaction tests to determine how much weight the model would hold. The activity was very engaging to the students.

VAPA News PRHS recently held a dance show highlighting students who are enrolled in beginning dance classes. Over 130 students performed about a dozen different numbers, all choreographed by students.

Culminating events for the after-school VAPA programs at Georgia Brown Elementary and The Arts Academy at Bauer Speck were held this week. Georgia Brown VAPA coach Judy Castro taught percussion to her students and gave an amazing performance as “Bucket Busters.”

Coach Cindy Franklin’s students showed off their piano keyboarding skills at The Arts Academy in their final concert. The keyboarding class was part of the 10-week after school program.

Students are also receiving keyboarding instruction during their school day! Mrs. Prices’ 3rd grade class is pictured left at their piano recital. The recital was attended by many proud parents. Students received certificates of completion from Mrs. Cox who is a 5th grade teacher and also the piano teacher.

The PRHS Beginning Drama One-Act Showcase was held this week. Five different one-act plays were directed by student directors.

PRHS Interpreting Club The PRHS Interpreting Club has been busy this school year. The club is new to PRHS this year and meets every Thursday at lunch with teacher and advisor, Ann Duston. Students have learned medical and legal terminology in Spanish and discuss events that support diversity in the county. They are planning to attend different events in the future to help the community.

Last Friday, the club went to Language Days at the Monterey Defense Institute. Students experienced a celebration of languages, cultures, and diversity. The club also participated in open house earlier this week where they sold out of llama piñatas.

One Cool Earth Corner Submitted by: Danica Smith Big THANK YOU to Treasury Wine Estates for staying active in the community. This week, employees volunteered at Winifred Pifer Elementary. They did a lot of physically demanding work in order to prep the pumpkin patch area for planting and harvest next school year. They started by weeding and spreading more wood chips in the main garden behind Mr. Pisor’s classroom. While some volunteers were weed whacking the “jungle,” others were transporting about 20 wheelbarrow loads full of compost across the grass field to the pumpkin patch area. We tilled the soil with our muscles (sans machines!) using shovels, pick axes, and hula hos! Miss Danica is looking forward to planting with kindergarten through 3rd grade in the upcoming weeks before school is released.

Students during Virginia Peterson Elementary lunchtime garden club learning how and why to braid fresh garlic this week. They also got to munch on the changing mulberry tree...ahh the sweet fruits of springtime :) Yum. Reminder to Virginia Peterson Elementary families that Saturday, June 2, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. is a Family Cooking Event taking place INSIDE the Panda Garden! Sign up in VPES front office soon if you’d like to participate.

If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please contact Danica Smith, our FoodCorps AmeriCorps Member at [email protected] for further opportunities and information. And remember to check out One Cool Earth on Facebook to see when they’ll be hosting community garden workdays at your school: www.facebook.com/onecoolearth or www.onecoolearth.org. From planting to painting signs, there is an activity for everyone.
