THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

October 6, 2019

When you are doing your share of Catholic Church ministry – volunteer or pay – are you working for God or doing God’s work (Opus Dei)? There is a huge difference. Working for God, I can kick and scream, talk about (God) my boss around the water cooler with the rest of the office; protest he’s unfair, and explain with good example that I know better than “that fool”. I can voice how stupid he is, how poorly he plans, pays, and how carelessly he chooses and promotes his collaborators. Working for God, I promote myself, my ego, and climb a ladder to a higher position in the business. I need to be noticed. Doing God’s work is a moon shot different. God’s work is plowing the field so that the Word of God will grow, seeing to it that nobody is left alone, to eat alone, to cry alone, that all people are “raised to a new hope.” Doing God’s work requires union

with God that prayer brings. If you have difficulty with today’s Gospel, good for you! You realize that you are not yet fully redeemed. God’s work still has a chance. You have hung on and have not quit. You cooperate with God to serve all people after the example of Christ and his command to love one another. You pray. At the beginning of each day, pray to have strength to love God’s people, His planet, indeed His creation. At the close of the day, give thanks “I’m tired, I’ve done God’s work today. God has allowed me to be the presence of Jesus. Someone is better because the Jesus in me responded with mercy and compassion. I am used up in service.” You have done God’s work. At the close of the day reflect on what could have gone better, pray for courage to carry you through tomorrow. St. Juliana’s Fall Festival is the best in the Diocese of Orange! The reason is simple: we come together to do God’s work. He wishes that we gather and enjoy each other and our neighbors. God’s work is planned with prayer and continued with grace. That’s how we do it. Thank you, all of you, who made the Fall Festival such a delightful weekend. Without YOU it could not happen. To the Kohauts, Lamberts, and all who contributed volunteer time and talent and treasure – it is parish stewardship – it is what happens because YOU BELIEVE and participate, you pitch in and do God’s work here with this great community of St. Juliana. God’s work is done when “all are one”. We are just better together! God bless.

Bishop Kevin Vann offering a blessing upon the Fall Festival.

Each October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month to

proclaim the immeasurable value of every person from conception to natural death.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops(USCCB.org) has created resources to help

people "understand, value and become engaged with supporting the God-given dignity of every

person — which naturally leads to protecting the gift of every person's life."

Respect Life Sunday is Oct. 6.

Prayer for Respect for Life Prayer for life by Saint John Paul II

O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life: Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies to be born,

of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy.

Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time.

Obtain for them the grace to accept the Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives

and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life.

~~ SaintJohn Paul II Encyclical Letter "The Gospel of Life"

Given in Rome, on March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, in the year 1995.
