We will be visiting the Indianapolis Art Museum during the Audubon exhibit, the Freedom Museum in Cincinnati, the Ark just across the border in Kentucky, and the Gasthof Amish community near Bloomington. And, of course, the crowning event – Cubs versus the Reds at Cincinnati. All in all a lot of great opportunities and we have kept the costs at the bare minimum for each trip. On the Joy Luncheon side? Well, as a matter of fact I just got home from our first one and it was terrific – a great lunch from Panera and Valentine’s music with Ernie Coleson and friends. We have moved the venue from the Fellowship Hall up to the North/South Parlor and we filled every corner of the room. Programs scheduled include a Celtic program on St. Patrick’s Day, a visit from Winston Churchill, an Amazon Adventure, Mayor Broderick, and more. The meals will be varied from month to month and will often match the theme of the day. If you haven’t taken advantage of these programs I hope you’ll give them a try this year. The fact is, many of our regulars have been aging and our numbers have dropped a bit during some months. In the past we’ve advertised age 55 and over, but this year, we’ll let you come if you happen to be younger! There’s no easier way to visit these venues, spend some time with friends, and enjoy a fine dinner. Pick up complete brochures on J.O.Y. and Bon Ami from the office.

A Message From Pastor Jeff In recent years one of our great church programs has been our senior ministry. Bon Amis and Joy Luncheon have flourished under the leadership of Pastor Donna and have continued to be strong in the past eight months.

We have just completed our planning and scheduling for the events that will take place in 2017, and I’m glad to announce that we have a terrific line-up for both programs. Full year schedules for each program are now available, and we hope that this year will be the best year ever.

On the Bon Amis side we have a schedule of musicals and plays including - local theater at the Arts Center (Othello), Emens at Ball State (Mamma Mia), Beef and Boards (My Fair Lady), and Blue Gate Theatre at Shipshewanna (Mennonite Girls Can Cook); we have our annual favorites like the Fourth of July Symphony on the Prairie at Conner Prairie and the Christmas program at Purdue University.

Why Lent? Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. Lent is a great time to “repent” — to return to God and re-focus our lives to be more in line with Jesus. It’s a 40 day trial run in changing your lifestyle and letting God change your heart. You might try one of these practices for Lent: FASTING: Some people have been known to go without food for days. But that’s not the only way to fast. You can fast by cutting out some of the things in your life that distract you from God. What do you need to let go of or “fast” from in order to focus on God? What clutters your calendar and life? How can you simplify your life in terms of what you eat, wear or do? SERVICE: Some Christians take something on for Christ. You can collect food for the needy, volunteer once a week to tutor children, or work for reform and justice in your community. You can commit to help a different stranger, co-worker or friend everyday of Lent. Serving others is one way we serve God. Learn how giving of yourself is prayer. PRAYER: Christians also use Lent as a time of intentional prayer. You can pray while you walk, create music or art as a prayer to God, or savor a time of quiet listening. All can be ways of becoming more in tune with God. **Taken from alivenow.upperroom.org and umc.org

Lenten Book Study: 40 Days With The Holy Spirit

By Jack Levison

The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8)

40 Days with the Holy Spirit by Jack Levison is our Lenten book study this year. The author helps keep us attentive to the scrip-tural witness and to the continuous and critical place of the Spirit. But he also gives witness through stories from his own life. This book is like a companionable witness and conversation that should help us recognize, appreciate and value God’s “breathing” on us, making His presence known. (From Eugene H. Peterson’s foreward)

God at Work at First United Methodist The Faces of Gateway

We all know, but often forget that there is a wonderful program for children and families which operates Monday through Friday in our own First United Methodist Church facility. Occupying the south wing of our building, Gateway is the only nationally credentialed child care center in Anderson and it serves children from two through 12 years of age.

Gateway also supports families off-site through respite care, a short-term and temporary care which provides opportunity for the primary caregiver of a child or adult with special needs to get some relief and much needed personal time away.

During the week 40 to 50 children and their families come through the doors each day. If you were to wander the halls of Gateway you would see children playing, exploring and experimenting with all kinds of materials. You would see happy, excited children and staff. You would also see children who struggle with the demands of daily life and learning, for Gateway is committed to the wellness, early care and educational readiness for all children, regardless of their individual or special needs.

When you drive into our parking lot and see the Gateway sign, or when you walk through the door into that wing under the Gateway logo on a Sunday morning, offer your prayers for Sara Krumme and her staff that they might serve the Gateway families with compassion and love. Pray for the children that through the services provided by Gateway their potential for success and joy in life might be realized.
