I have had them for years, but saw them again at the CKI gift shop. 10.Consider traveling. It maybe too late for this year. But what about next year? Next year in Jerusalem, or, next year in the Moab desert of Utah with the Adventure Rabbi. What I have learned, and need to relearn every year, is that it’s OK not to get so stressed about Passover. (And I still will.) It is OK to not clean under the refrigerator. It is Blu Greenberg, the author of How to Run a Traditional Jewish Household, says that the day after Purim, her preparation for Passover begins. This book, together with 1001 Questions and Answers on Pesach Questions, becomes my bible during Passover. There are always lots of questions about Pesach. Ask them. The answers may surprise you! I am available to answer them, to have debates about Ashkanazi and Sephardic practices, to guide you through what is OK and what is con- sidered not OK. In times past the Shabbat before Passover was one of two times the rabbi gave a sermon. I’ll spare you the sermon. At CKI we have already begun the thinking, the scheduling, the hard work that goes into preparing for Passover. And let’s face it, Passover is hard work. Passover requires us to clean. But the dust bunnies under the refrigerator and the schmutz on the windows are not really chamatz—I am hoping you were not planning to eat them. So what is with this spring-clean- ing-on-steroids ritual? I don’t think it is so we are so tired when we get to the first night’s seder that reclining is all we can do. Because Passover is also fun. It is uplifting. It celebrates freedom and spring. It is the ulti- mate educational experience. We are com- manded to tell our children what the Lord did for us when we went forth from Egypt. What? We were there? That is what the midrash tells us. All of us were there and were led out of Egypt, out of Mitzrayim, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. The word Mitzrayim is interesting. While we translate it as Egypt, it has a sense of being out of the narrow places. Each of us, at some point in our lives, have escaped out a narrow space. That is what free- dom is about. How, then, do we get out of the trap of clean- ing for an entire month only to be too tired to enjoy the freedom that Passover celebrates? 1. Try a new Haggadah. As I write this article after a mostsplendid, awesome, and fantasticweekend—our 120th Anniversary

Celebration weekend—I am so thankful toeveryone who participated.

The weekend started with the return of “FridayNight Live” at the Friday Shabbat service. Thiswas my first experience with this event and I soenjoyed the evening. We welcomed DaveKaptain, the Mayor of Elgin, who read aProclamation from the City of Elgin congratu-lating us on our 120 years in Elgin. We had agreat service, followed by a very delicious onegprepared by our Sisterhood and sponsored bythe 120th Anniversary Committee.

Saturday morning Shabbat services were veryspiritual and inspirational, and were followedby a Kiddush also prepared by Sisterhood andsponsored by the 120th AnniversaryCommittee.

Due to “Nemo,” the snowstorm on the EastCoast, the Robert Klein dinner and perform-ance were postponed to April 21, 2013.

The culmination of the Celebration Weekendwas a brunch prepared by Becky AlbertCatering and sponsored by the 120thAnniversary Committee. The entertainment bythe Maxwell Street Klezmer Band Quartet andthe dancing was such a tremendous delight.Representative Keith Farnham was in atten-dance, and he read a proclamation from theState of Illinois in honor of our 120th anniver-sary. The afternoon culminated with a videopresentation that was assembled from ourTorah School students’ interviews with ourlong-time members. They were asked aboutdifferences at CKI from when they were youngercompared to CKI today. Great job to all who hada part in putting the video together!

I am so proud to be the President of CKI at thistime and being able to honor our PastPresidents at our Celebration Brunch:

Albert Zimbler: 1967Donald Lesser: 1970-1973; again in 1980Jerry L. Goldstein: 1981-1982Paul Glaser: 1994-1996; again in 2005Susan Johnson: 1997-1998; again in 2004

President’s Message (cont’d from page 2)

The Purim Carnival was a huge success and lots of fun was had by all!! Purim is the holiday thatfalls on the 14th of Adar and is observed in celebration of the deliverance of the Jews from a mas-sacre by Haman. The Megillah reading (which is a reading fromthe Book of Esther) was a chance for the children to do what they do best—make lots of noise!!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped with serving food, set up and clean up, as well as facepainting and managing the games! Special thanks to Sue Zemel, Barb Razowsky, Amy Robinson,Sabina Bernstein and Marcy Cohen-Tremmel for planning the event.

DefEATing Hunger

We had our first CKI garden planning sessionSunday, Jan. 27. Many important decisionswere made regarding the site, size and somecrops. Several congregants expressed a desireto participate this spring, but do not want todrive distances to get to the garden. Inresponse to that obstacle, we decided to have3 smaller locations: DefEATing Hunger EAST: wewill plant a raised bed at Judy and Mike’s eastside residence; our WEST location is at thehome Eva and Rich Kruth; and our CENTRALHEARTLAND location will be a raised bed atCKI. Many thanks to both the Kruths and theGantz/Rubenstein-Gantz for offering not onlyplots of land, but also the use of tools on-siteand free water. Plan to participate! This is agreat opportunity to spend family time togeth-er; be a role model for your children and teachthem both Jewish values and nutrition.

We are still in need of more volunteers—twosite managers (West, and Central). The CEN-TRAL HEARTLAND location gardens is slated tobe planted for Earth Day (on Sunday, April 21)at the synagogue. This will be the CKI Torahchildren’s garden consisting of cool weathercrops such as salad greens and herbs such asparsley. Many of the transplants will be theseedlings the children planted on Tu B’Shevatwith the help of Rabbi.

In support of our project, we have received alarge donation of seeds from Ball SeedCompany.

Special Volunteer (See form on page 11)

Katie (minor’s name withheld) has decided thatfor her Bat Mitzvah project she is going to bethe Co-Site Manager of DefEATing Hunger,Central Location, here at the shul! I could notbe more proud of her. In addition to theadministrative duties of scheduling volunteers, she also intends this project to be a mini-MBAprogram including speaking about communitygardening, educating and mentoring theyounger volunteers, and planning activities; aswell as being a terrific role model. One of hergoals is to enlist a Torah School parent to bethe other Co-Site Manager. You could not havea more capable and dedicated co-SiteManager. Please contact Katie or myself.

In addition to the physical CKI garden,DefEATing Hunger also is actively working toenlist other houses of worship, civic groupsand service organizations to also create gar-dens and donate 100% of the harvest to Foodfor Greater Elgin. I was invited to be the guestspeaker at both the February Hadassah meet-ing and the February Cosmopolitan Club, ElginChapter, in addition to “manning” a table at theElgin Alive Volunteer Fair held on Feb. 19 andalso made a “plug” at the Elgin HispanicNetwork where I met several dedicated peopledoing some wonderful things with at-risk kids(who have the potential of being the first inthe families to go to college). I am also tenta-tively slated to be the speaker at the April Elgin

IT'S NOT YOUR MOTHER'S BOOK CLUB! The“CKI” book club meets oncemonthly, generally on the thirdWednesday of the month. We are NOT exclusively CKIpersons. All adults are welcome; you do not haveto be an “official” CKI mem-ber to participate. We welcome all new mem-bers. It has a warm, socialatmosphere and is free.

For the March 13meeting we are reading The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan. The meetingis at Rabbi's house at 7:30 pm.

Looking Ahead to April, 2013

CKI’s 120th Anniversary Committee has committed to staff Food For Greater Elgin

during the week of April 15 (not includingSaturday, of course). Daily service hours vary:Monday (6:00-8:00 pm), Tuesday (9:00-11:00 am),Wednesday (11:00 am-1:00 pm), and Thursday(6:00-8:00 pm). Each shift requires workers toarrive 30-45 minutes early for orientation.

Those who speak Spanish would be very help-ful. Computer-savvy volunteers can assistchecking clients in. Those age 14 and over arewelcome to work alongside a relative/parent in the warehouse. Eight volunteers per shiftwould be optimal.

In the Kitchen with WandaWe will be turning the kitchen over for Passover on Sunday, March 17.

If you or your group has any food in the freezer or refrigerator, it is now time to start removing it. Anything left as of the 17thwill be disposed of.

Also, last year we had a wonderful group of volunteers who helped clean the stove, saving the Sisterhood over a thousand dollars. It involves, basically, disassemblingthe stove, cleaning it, and reassembling it. I won’t fool you, it is a big job. If youwould be willing to help that Sunday afternoon, please let me know.

THANK YOU!
