Dear AGS Members, I am honored to serve another term as President of AGS. As I have stated before, this is a responsibility that I take very seriously and pledge to do my very best to continue to serve the membership of this society. AGS continues to grow every day. As of this writing our membership numbers have nearly surpassed our total for all of last year and we are on pace to exceed expectations for income growth as well. It is an exciting but challenging time for AGS and I am glad to have such enthusiastic direc-tors and volunteers working for the betterment of AGS. As I write, the Judges Com-mittee is working on a total revision of the Judges Training Manual which was long overdue. Another goal for this committee is to establish a viable judges training pro-gram which is accessible and affordable to all members who wish to participate. The Show Rules Committee is performing a thorough review of the show rules regarding any conflicts or discrepancies. AGS has selected a new Editor for the VOICE who is eager to get started with the next issue. Personally I am glad to hand the re-sponsibility off as I was beginning to think the temporary editor label was becoming permanent. Later this year a complete revision of the Members Handbook will take place. There are of course other committees busy at work and we are looking for more volunteers to serve on certain committees. Please review the list of commit-tees on the inside back cover of the VOICE and contact me if you are interested in contributing in any way. I want to thank the NENDA group for a job well done with the 2005 AGS National Show and Convention. My understanding is that the event did turn a profit as expected. Like many of you, I am already looking forward to the 2006 event in Duncan, Oklahoma. As always I want to thank the general membership for keeping this soci-ety strong and moving forward.

Message from District III - Gary Whitehead

Hi Everyone, My name is Gary Whitehead, and I am the newly elected Director of District 3. I am married to my lovely wife, Sandra, for more than 31 years. We have three sons, Jonathan, Brandon, and Aaron. Brandon and his wife have 2 children, Dylan and Haleigh plus they also raise Nigerians. Our youngest son Aaron is married to his wife Kelly. I am a letter carrier for the Post Office for 23 years and my wife is a CEI Lab Teacher for the Cleburne School District. We have been raising and showing Nigerians since 2000. Our Herd Name is Pecan Hollow and we reside here in Nemo, Texas. We have a herd of about 60 goats, some chickens, rabbits, and several dogs and cats. I am very proud to serve as a Director of District 3 and I hope that I can do the best job possible. I have an open ear to all, and for us to keep improving our registry please feel free to let me know your views, so together we can work for the betterment of AGS. My platform is to open doors for the Pygmys and the large Dairy Goats to "Come back" to AGS. I Thank You for the opportunity to serve.

Message from District IV- Tim Flickinger

Hello AGS members, I would like to introduce myself as the newly elected director for District 4. My name is Tim Flickinger and live in Mishawaka, IN where my partner Justin & I raise Sables & LaManchas under the herd name Flick's-Acres. I'm also a licensed AGS Judge since 2000. I have served on committees such as Pure Gold Sale. I'm currently the 2005 ISBA (International Sable Breeders Assoc.) breed club Chairman.

I have been involved in dairy goats since 1987. Within that time frame I have seen the dairy goat industry being more recognized and evolving into a viable option to breeders & the general public. Whether your interests vary from being a commercial dairy, breeding stock, or showing we all have a concern for the future of our registry. My goal as director is to listen to your concerns & suggestions for our association, then to take those concerns/suggestions of the majority to help AGS move into a progressive registry to suit the many different needs of our members!

I look forward to being a voice for the District 4 members. Please feel free to contact me as your representative.

Director’s Reports

Message from District I- Bonnie Chandler

Hi, I'm Bonnie Chandler, new AGS District 1 Director. I have been involved with animals all my life but got my first goats in 1992, when I bought two Nigerian wethers from Anne Petersen of Rosasharn and a doe from Holly Long of Southview Farms in New Jersey (through Judy Veale of Stonewall Farm). My main interest at the time was milk-ing, but when Judy and Anne organized the first Nigerian dwarf show here in New England in 1997, I entered it, and my life has never been quite the same since. My farm, Fairlea Farm, is located on 2.73 acres in Harvard, Mas-sachusetts, and now boasts 17 Nigerians – three bucks and 14 does. (Not to mention six sheep; chickens; ducks; two Shetland sheepdogs; a cat, and, until recently, a horse.) I have two children, Holly (22) and Cedric (18), and my husband, John, is an astrophysicist. I work part-time (more and more part-time, as my goat hobby expands) as a news reporter for two local papers, The Harvard Post and The Bolton Common. In addition to the goats, I com-pete with my dogs in conformation shows, obedience, and agility and have held board positions in several dog clubs. I look forward to the opportunity to serve as a district director and to help in communications between the AGS board and local members. --Bonnie

THE VOICE OF AGS

Greetings from the office! We hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far and you are having tons of fun at those summer shows! The office is now able to accept credit card payments over the phone and we are very excited to offer this new service. Things in the office are very busy - but we are trying to keep the turnaround time to less than two weeks. Remember this is from the date received to the date we return your completed paperwork. Please look in this issue for the minutes from the annual Board meeting as there will be some changes in fees and procedures starting September 1, 2005. We are experiencing a phenomenal amount of paperwork coming into the office with errors. I’ve listed below some of the most common problems we are seeing with registration applications.

Incomplete registration applications – we cannot register goats that are missing, sire and dam, color or birth date information, tattoos or signatures.

Registration applications that are missing service memos – if you are not the owner of the buck at the time of service you must turn in a service memo with the application.

Appropriate fees – most commonly we see that people forget to include a transfer to new owner fee when registering kids not of their breeding.

Faxed paperwork – we seem to have a rise in the amount of paperwork that is being faxed into the office. We are glad to offer you this service, but ask that you keep in mind a few things. We ask that you send a cover letter explaining what you are wanting done (are you requesting stamped duplicates or just wanting your packet to get in line?) Please remember payment must accompany your fax.

We try very hard not to have to return paperwork for lack of information. We try several avenues to collect missing information such as phone, fax and email. We ask that you please give a return call or email within 5 days so that we can better serve you and provide a faster return rate. As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact the office by phone or email. We thank you for your cooperation and look forward to working with all members to make this organization the best it can be!

Remember you are AGS!

Notice of fee increase At the annual meeting in June, the Board voted to increase certain fees. Effective September 1, 2005, the charge for fax services and certificate revisions will be increasing slightly to keep up with the rising cost of supplies. The fax fee will change from a flat $2.00 fee to a $2.00 plus 50¢ per page. The certificate revision fee will increase from $1 to $2.50. The current fees are not covering the actual costs involved with these ser-vices. The cost of purchasing a Life Membership will increase from the current $155 to $200 effective January 1, 2006. Even with the pending increase, the cost of an AGS Life Membership will still be a superb value. If you have been thinking about purchasing a Life Membership now is the time to do so and save.

Secretary’s Corner Postal Ballots

Ballot 022105

The CPA firm we are currently working with has recommended that AGS purchase

an updated version of QuickBooks. Intuit, the maker of the software, has now come out with a version for Nonprofits that includes all the tax forms and financial tables needed to

maintain proper records. The full version of Quickbooks: Premier Nonprofit Edition 2005, cost $399 with a mail in rebate of $120 the final cost (including tax and shipping)

would be around $300. This software is necessary to maintain the financial records of the Society. Should the board instruct the office to purchase the recommended software at the price stated?

Yea, 11 votes, William Kowalik, Keith Harrell, Kellye Bussey, Dale Carlson, Sunni Florence-Milligan, Joanne Karohl, Jean New, Cheryl Smith, Penny Hamers, Gayle Nelson, Eddie Fugate, Nay, none, abstain, none

Ballot 022705

The discuss_ags list is currently accepted as the “official AGS list” and one source of official notices from the AGS office and the board. There have been numerous member complaints about the negative “feel” of the list. As the “official list” many members accept posts to the list as being the “official” word from AGS whether or not this is actually the case. The proposal is to remove the official sanctioning of the discuss_ags list and return moderator duties to the owner of the list. This action should not result in shutting down the list but, in contrast allow more flexibility to the members of the list without AGS being held accountable for the content. As a replacement, AGS would start an online message board through which AGS could make official announcements and keep the membership informed of board, committee, and office activities. This list would not be interactive, meaning only office staff and the moderator (on behalf of the board) would be able to post to the list. It may even encourage more AGS members to subscribe to the list since the volume of e-mail sent would be greatly reduced with the new list. Members would still be encouraged to contact their directors, the committees, and the office should they have any questions or concerns. Should AGS remove the “official AGS list” sanctioning from the discuss_ags list and create a new message board as the “official” source for AGS information in an e-mail format?

Yea, 11 votes Dale Carlson, Joanne Karohl, Sunni Florence-Milligan, William Kowalik, Kellye Bussey, Keith Harrell, Debbie Gesick, Penny Hamers, Cheryl K Smith, Gayle Nelson, Eddie Fugate Nay none, Abstain - Jean New, Did not vote - Fred Phillips

Ballot 030305B

It has been motioned by Director Carlson and seconded by Director Nelson that: "The Office manager's position, as currently spelled out, will carry a gross annual salary of $12,000, paid monthly. In addition, a performance bonus be paid monthly equal to 10% of all gross revenues. Additional expenses that are necessary in the completion of prescribed duties shall submitted by signed voucher and must be approved by the Board prior to payment. This salary is to be reviewed, adjusted if necessary and approved annually, by the Board, as part of the budget process. The Office manager must be given a minimum of six month's notice of any decrease in the gross annual salary." Shall we accept this proposal as written?

Yea, 12 votes Sunni Florence-Milligan, Debbie Gesick, Jean New, Joanne Karohl, Dale Carlson, Keith Harrell, Penny Hamers, Cheryl K Smith, Kellye Bussey, Fred Phillips, Gayle Nelson, Eddie Fugate Nay none abstain William Kowalik

Ballot 030505

It has been motioned by Director Bussey and seconded by Director Hamers that Amy be given a one-time salary adjustment in the amount of $2445.26 to bring the total salary for 2004 to $16,639.70, as calculated as a percentage of MRT's less life memberships. This ballot replaces ballot 030305A, which has been withdrawn. Should the Board approve this motion?

Yea, 12 votes, Dale Carlson, Cheryl K Smith, Joanne Karohl, Penny Hamers, Fred Phillips, Kellye Bussey, Jean New, Keith Harrell, Sunni Florence-Milligan, Debbie Gesick, Gayle Nelson, Eddie Fugate Nay none, abstain, William Kowalik

Ballot 032205

It has been motioned by Director Harrell and seconded by Director Hamers to accept the recommendation from the Data Management Committee. That being to accept the software recommended, and reimburse William Kowalik the $1000 for purchasing the Animal Tracs Software. Said software to become the sole property of AGS. The Data Management Committee has agreed that the AGS Registry Program, developed by the Animal Tracs Company, is working well for AGS and should be considered sufficiently tried and tested. We have heard from William that it supports our current database well and is performing as expected. The designer of the Program has provided more than adequate support and assistance. The AGS Registry program is the property of AGS. It is a "beta" program and as such, will have no additional costs relating to problems or "bugs" in the existing program. It is expandable, meaning the Program can be modified to adapt to future changes and growth. As most already are aware, William personally backed this project with his own money and assumed the risk that it would suit the needs of AGS. At this point, he has $1,000 invested - $450 for the initial Beta software, $280 to link all records (animals, owners, etc.), with the remainder being the customization charge. There was no charge for incorporating the records from the old Access database and splitting the name field into five separate fields. It is the recommendation of the Data Management Committee that the AGS Registry Program be accepted as our working system and that William Kowalik be reimbursed $1,000. Should we accept the software recommended by the Data Management Committee, and reimburse William Kowalik the $1000 for purchasing the AGS Registry software developed by Animal Trac?

Yea, 12 votes, Cheryl K Smith, Jean New, Sunni Florence-Milligan, Fred Phillips, Keith Harrell, Dale Carlson, Penny Hamers, Joanne Karohl, Kellye Bussey, Debbie Gesick, Gayle Nelson, Eddie Fugate Nay none abstain, William Kowalik

Ballot 041105

It has been motioned by Director Harrell and seconded by Director Florence-Milligan to adopt the new herd name policy as written.

Application for a new herd name:

To apply for a herd name and tattoo sequence, the Herd Name and Tattoo Registration Application must be completed and submitted to the AGS office. Each Family or Individual membership (including all categories of Individual membership) may have exactly one herd name associated with it. Please keep in mind when choosing a herd name that names of goats registered with AGS are limited to 30 letters and spaces.

The Office Manager will determine whether the requested herd name is distinct from any previously registered herd name according to the rules that follow. Because it is impossible to specifically address all possible permutations in a written policy, the opinion of the Office Manager on this matter will be definitive, unless the member appeals his or her decision to the Board of Directors.

Appealing the Office Manager's decision:

If the member applying for the herd name wishes to appeal the decision of the Office Manager not to register a proposed herd name, that member may contact the Board of Directors in writing, either by e-mail or by US Mail, addressed to the AGS office. A decision on whether or not the proposed herd name is consistent with AGS policy will be by simple majority vote of the Board of Directors. This decision is final.

THE VOICE OF AGS

This was another good year for DHIR testing. There were twenty-six herds on test in fourteen different states.

There were four herds testing standard sized does. The rest were all Nigerians.

There were 172 lactations completed in 2004. Some does completed more than one lactation. There were 101 qualifying records.

There were thirty-five applications for one-day tests made in 2004, of which twenty-eight tests were completed. There were four group tests and twenty-four single herd tests done. There were 157 does tested, representing twenty-five owners. Ninety does made qualifying records.

Twenty bucks qualified in 2004 for their plus sire titles, and five bucks qualified for their second plus. Six does qualified for their stars through their progeny.

There are eighteen herds signed up for DHIR testing in 2005, and hopefully more owners will apply later on. We’ve had one one-day test already.

It’s easy, inexpensive, especially now that AGS offers the Owner-Sampler program, and lots of fun to milk test your

animals. Why not make this year the year you try it for the first time?

Office Manager.

2) Alternate spellings of common words are acceptable but will not be considered to be distinct from other words that are homonyms.

Example: hunny and honey will be considered to be the same.

3) The following list of words, when added to an existing herd name, either before or after the existing herd name, will not be considered to produce a distinct name: The, Farm(s) Acre(s), Ranch, Goats, Kids, Herd(s), Caprines, Valley, or any breed name, singular or plural. Other similar words may be disallowed at the discretion of the Office Manager. This list is not exhaustive and may be added to at any time.

4) Reserved herd names consisting of two or more words are unique in the combination and order of words, and the addition of another word in front of or behind the phrase will not be allowed. The separate words in those phrases are NOT reserved, and may be used in other combinations.

Example: Pleasant Valley Nubians--use of Pleasant Valley would violate rule 4. Pleasant, or Valley, or Nubians may be used alone or in other combinations.

5) Adding or deleting hyphens, apostrophes, or other punctuation to or from a reserved herd name does not create a new herd name. Breaking a one word herd name into two words with no other words added is not a new herd name, nor is turning a phrase into one word. Changes between lower or upper case in one or more words of a reserved herd name does not create a new herd name.

Example: Red-bud is not distinct from Redbud. Twincreeks is not distinct from Twin Creeks.

6) Re-registration of animals from other registries: If application is made for re-registration of a goat with AGS from another registry (ADGA or CGS), and the registered name of that animal would conflict with the above rules, that animal will be registered with AGS using its current registered name with the initials of the other registry (ADGA or CGS) as a prefix. Those initials will not count toward the 30 character limit on registered names. The groups of initials "AGS", "ADGA", and "CGS" will not be allowed to be part of any herd name registered with AGS.

Example: Mugwumps is a registered AGS herd name. A goat registered with ADGA as Mugwumps Alice may be re-registered with AGS as ADGA Mugwumps Alice. Should we accept the proposed herd name policy?

Important Tattoo Information Some AGS members are in the process of dual registering their animals. A few issues regarding reconciliation of AGS tat-toos with those of other registries have come to the attention of the AGS office, and at least one member has altered tattoos on AGS registered animals such that the registration of those animals is in jeopardy. Because of these problems, the AGS Office has asked that we clarify the tattooing procedure to be followed for dual registration. The most important thing to remember is DO NOT alter your AGS approved ear tattoos EXCEPT in one very special case!! More on this later. To reconcile tattoos so that any AGS goat with ears can also be registered with another registry without placing your AGS registration at risk: Find out what tattoo the other registry wants to appear on the goat. Put it on the tail (left or right tail web, or center tail). Fill out the other registry’s application and INCLUDE EVERY TATTOO that is on the goat, including ears and tail. Keep in mind that when checking tattoos at shows, ADGA rules require the judge to either fill in a tattoo for each possible place there could be one, or write "none" on the show report if there is none. If a tattoo is present that is not on your registration certificate, your goat does not match your certificate. As of yet, this is not required of judges at AGS shows. Further, at this time, if you add a tail tattoo to a goat with ear tattoos that match its AGS registration certificate, it is not necessary to return your registration certificate to AGS to note the added tail tattoo as a change of tattoo, though of course this is permissible. Here is the special case where you may change ear tattoos in pursuit of dual registration. You may add one or more digits to an AGS registered goat's right (herd of origin) ear if and only if BOTH of the following are true:

1) The herd of origin tattoo of the BREEDER of that goat (not your tattoo, unless you are the breeder) has been officially changed with AGS. – AND- 2) The new herd of origin tattoo was derived from the old tattoo by adding one or more digits to the beginning or end of the old tattoo. Example: My original tattoo with AGS was JK. My new tattoo with AGS (and ADGA) is JK5. Anyone may add a 5 to the right ear of a goat of my breeding that is tattooed JK, send in that goat's papers to AGS for a change of tattoo, and dual register that goat with ADGA with JK5 noted as the right ear tattoo.

IN NO OTHER CASE SHOULD EAR TATTOOS BE ALTERED, OR YOU MAY PLACE YOUR AGS

REGISTRATION IN PERIL.

AGS Awards Scholarships The AGS Board voted to accept the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee and award the following scholarships:

The AGS Scholarship was awarded to Cedric Chandler and the John Howland Scholarship was awarded to Jake Cie-synski. Congratulations to both students. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please see your members handbook or contact the office for more information.

The Scholarship Committee has also been asked to review the application process and seek other sources of funding to pos-sibly increase the amounts awarded in future scholarships.

Former Director Dies Loren Johnson became active in AGS about the time we started registering Pygmies, what was that--around 1975? He got his judges license and was used frequently in So. Cal. shows. His Chino Acres Pygmies were among the best on the So. Cal show circuit, and he promoted them strongly as a dairy animal. He always showed his does with a full clip even when his competitors didn't clip theirs. He was a former AGS director. He had a funny, dry Scandinavian type of humor that some folks didn't get. When he wasn't involved in AGS, he 1) taught math and science or special ed., 2) ran a commercial wholesale nursery, 3) played in a recorder orchestra, 4)cooked gourmet meals and made pomegranate jelly, 5) traveled with the Sierra Club to repair remote hiking trails, and 6) traveled extensively with his wife, Janet, wherever a) she wanted to paint scenery, or b) he took craft classes like furniture building and woodworking. Loren Johnson was a true renaissance man! Alice Hall

The Convention and National show is scheduled for June 4-10, 2006 in Duncan, OK.

More information will be available in the next issue of the VOICE.

The preliminary schedule is loaded with fun events for the whole family.

Make plans to attend!

Revisions will soon be made to several AGS forms including the work order form. The new forms will include a space for you to fill in your membership number. Your membership number can be found on any invoice from the office or on your member-ship card. The main reason for this minor change is that many family memberships include individuals with different last names. Our computer database is capable of handling multiple variations of ownership listings for family members or joint own-ership of animals, however, it does help if we know where to start looking. We are happy to have an ever growing number of family memberships and we want to make sure your work requests are processed as quickly and accurately as possible. Please help us to continue to provide the best service possible by including this information.

On a related note, we remind everyone that Classification is a member service and is not available to non-members. Your membership must be current when the Classification is performed. Having your membership number available or carrying your membership card with you when you plan to have Classifications done, will help assure that there are no misunderstandings later.

In order to further communication between AGS and it's members, a new AGS Announcements list has been created. This is an announcement only list, which will be used by the AGS Board and the AGS Office to distribute information in the most timely, concise manner possible to the membership. This list is available to every AGS member. We hope this will further the family atmosphere of AGS. Members of the AGS Board will still be on hand to discuss matters of importance to AGS members on the Discuss AGS list, and the new Announcements list will provide direct information from the Board to the membership. Those members who do not wish to read the numerous posts on Discuss AGS will now have a venue with which to receive information about the Society, and every member will benefit from timely updates. You can subscribe to the new list at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AGSAnnouncements
