Sunday mornings spent on the field, at the pool, on the slopes, in the gym, or in the studio have a negative effect on one’s relationship with God and the Church. When one gets older, there is no desire to go to church, one has no relationships with anyone at church, one doesn’t know anything about church and greatest of all one lost the opportunity to learn about

God. We cannot turn back time! We must carefully guard our priorities and cannot allow other commitments to push out what is most important. It is obvious that the time spent on other activities directly affects chil-dren’s relationship with church and this directly affects their relation-ship with God. Church attendance is not the goal... however, church is the way that God has provided for people to grow in knowledge and love of who

God is and build relationships with other likeminded Christians. Church is important. Step back a bit and think about the children you are raising. What if, when they get to their early 20’s and have no relationship with God? Will we look back and say, “Well, at least they made it to the championship soccer tournament!”? When I was a kid, there was never anything scheduled on Sundays. We never had to choose between sports and church. Sundays were saved for church, family and gathering with friends. I urge you to do what you can to maintain consistency for your children to be at church and build relation-ships with other kids and youth who know and love Jesus! I will not tell you what is best for your fami-ly...I can only encourage you to take some time out to prayerfully consider this, talk it over with your family, and make sure your priorities determine your calendar and not the other way around.

If you wander off the road to the right or the left, you will hear his voice behind you saying, “Here is the road. Follow it.”

(Isaiah 30:21)

You find yourself sitting on a soccer field on a beautiful Sunday morning enjoying a hot cup of coffee. You are also experiencing frustration and conflict. You are frustrated because you see several families from the parish who are also there. You are con-flicted as you reflect on how you got into this situation. You know the value of church. You know that consistency is very important for your children to build relationships within the church family and to grow as be-lievers in Christ. You have made decisions over the years to say “no” to other things in order to say “yes” to church, yet, here you find your-self on a soccer field on a Sunday morning! Today many families I’ve talked to feel like they have no choice for a variety of rea-sons; it’s a sport the child loves, there are opportu-nities that would be missed if you said no, you feel an obligation to the team, there’s real potential in your little athlete that may never be recognized. There are many reasons that one comes to the deci-sions that keep families away from church. I, as a priest and a father understand how we got here – but I also know the long term affect that missing church will take on families. I’m not saying that one missed Sunday is going to curtail your children’s spiritual growth. But the way things are today it is almost impossible for con-sistent worship. Unless one is vigilant to protect a church commitment, one can quickly find that one Sunday missed has become many Sundays missed, and before long Sunday worship is reduced to something we do when we don’t have anything else to do. When we say “yes” to one thing, we say “no” to something else. I have seen it too easily happen that without meaning to reject church, families say “yes” to extracurricular activities – but this “yes” is a “no” to church.

DECISIONS WE MAKE

The Gospel of Matthew Matthew was one of Jesus’ chosen 12 disciples. Once he was a despised tax collector, but his life had been turned around by Jesus. He followed Jesus during His earthly ministry; then after Jesus’ resurrection, he served Christ for life - preaching, teaching and writing. The Gospel of Matthew was written to his fellow Jews to prove from their own Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah and to explain God’s Kingdom We cordially invite you to come join us each week as we gather together to glorify God through fellowship with one another and to study God’s Word, the Bible. At St. Johns’ Church, we believe the Bible is true and that it tells us how we can obtain new life through a re-lationship with God. Likewise, the Bible provides practical answers to life’s questions for all who are willing to listen and obey what it teaches. Come and simply enjoy a warm, friendly atmosphere where God’s Word is clearly taught and Jesus Christ is honored and glorified.

Πως θα καταφέρουμε να μείνουμε επικεντρωμένοι στην πίστη μας μέσα σε ένα κόσμο που αλλάζει συνέχεια;

St. John’s

Greek School

Our Greek School meets on Fridays from 5:15pm to 8:15pm, for children in grades PreK – High School and it concentrates on teaching the Greek lan-guage, culture, history, mythology and dance.

The academic year 2019-2020 starts on September 13th, 2019. Each year our school has special events with plays, poems, songs and dance performed by our students for the entire parish.

Our Greek School teachers are trained for language teaching and they use age- and level-appropriate methods that are fun and productive. Our curriculum successfully combines language learning with senso-ry stimulation and play. The students learn in a re-laxed but challenging setting, where we speak, listen, sing, write, move and play games. Books and other supplies are provided for free to all students.

Starting this year, we offer a new Preschool program, tailored to children with little or no Greek language skills. Our new Pre-K class will be contacted almost entirely in Greek with focus on conversation, rhymes, songs, dancing, learning of letter formation and first words.

We also offer a Regents class for students in grades 8 and above who are interested in receiving three high school credits in a foreign language. The Compre-hensive Examination in Modern Greek is aligned to the Checkpoint B learning standards for Languages Other Than English (LOTE) as described by the New York State Education Department.

If you are interested in participating in St. John’s Greek School, please vis-it www.stjohnsbluepoint.org/education/greek-school to fill out the Registration Form. You can also email our Principal, Mrs Yiota Theophilou at [email protected] .

We begin our 2019-20

Sunday School year on Sunday,

September 15th!

We have provided our Sunday School Curriculum for this year! Each Sunday School grade is an important building block to helping children and young adults better understand, participate and grow in their Ortho-dox Faith.

Preschool and Kindergarten: God Loves Us, Happy With God Our preschool and kindergarten program focuses on the importance of love. The program enables children to understand God's love for all of us through special lessons and projects. We focus on God's love being a course of joy. We introduce aspect of worship and sto-ries from scripture that highlight specific examples of and reasons for joy centered on Christ.

First Grade and Second Grade: Me and My World, Loving God This program focuses on Creation as God's gift. Chil-dren come to learn that family, friends, church and school -- all come through God. The program focuses on daily experiences in God's world that foster an un-derstanding that God is real, loving and caring. We also focus on the theme of "Loving God." Through Biblical examples of men and women and saints chil-dren begin to understand the difference between right and wrong and the importance of forgiveness in the light of God's love. They learn about the importance of respecting other people, of doing good in His Name, taking care of the environment and loving God uncon-ditionally.

Third and Fourth Grade: Sharing God's World, Growing this God. Jesus learn about sharing through the examples of je-sus and are inspired to observe these same examples in the Divine Liturgy, the Sacraments, and other services of the Church. Children are also introduced to the mu-sic of the church through hymms and songs. This pro-gram is devoted to helping children learn how to use and appreciate the Bible. The class introduces exam-ples of living the sacramental life -- attending services, fasting, praying, observing feast days, helping others, learning about the saints and the Church of Christ.

Fifth Grade and Sixth Grade: God Calls Us, The Zine Series In Fifth Grade and Sixth Grade, we focus on how God

calls us to faith as we delve into the importance of faith, the importance of ethics, speaking the truth, the nature of Jesus Christ, and how we are called to ser-vice. We review the importance of stewardship and serving in God's World. The program talks about fac-ing peer pressure, honesty and knowing Christ. Stu-dents come to understand the Journey through holy week, the relevance of Great Lent and the beauty of the Diving Liturgy.

Seventh and Eighth Grade: Rejoicing in One Lord, Jesus Christ In this class we focus on the foundational elements of the church. Students are encouraged to memorize the Nicene Creed and understand what it means. There is a review of the foundation of our Faith and our Tradi-tions.

High School: How to Live a Christian Life

Students in grade 9 through 12 are encouraged to at-tend this important program that focuses on life choic-es, life styles, making good decisions and what it means to be an Orthodox Christian. Contemporary is-sues are discussed through the lens of Orthodoxy.

Sunday, September 15,

Kick off the school year right!

We invite all students to bring your school

bags to church with you to have blessed!

Parish Ministry PHILOPTOCHOS

NEWS

Our Philoptochos has had a busy summer season!! From Festival Baking, the Feeding the Hungry pro-gram, assisting in the celebration of St. John’s feast day, to kicking off the planning for our Lights, Camera Auction fundraiser for November, our members have had a productive summer.

When Philoptochos sees hunger, we aspire to offer sus-tenance! On the last Tuesday of every month with the help of sponsored chapters, National Philoptochos feeds the hungry of New York outside of Penn Station. Our Philoptochos Chapter volunteered to be the spon-sor chapter on Tuesday July 30th, one of the hottest days of the summer. The blistering heat could not keep our volunteers from smiling and serving the guests!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank every-one who donated toiletries, undergarments, clothing, food items and funds to assist us with the Feed the Hungry program. Additionally, thank you to the vol-unteers who assisted in packaging the items and the meals, as well as the group who drove into Manhattan to serve the meals and to distribute the clothing.

Our first meeting of the 2019-2020 year has been scheduled for Thursday September 19th at 6:30pm in the Cultural Center. We have had several new mem-bers sign up for Philoptochos in 2019 and if you are interested in becoming a member, feel free to join us at this next meeting or email us at [email protected].

Mark the date: our new board and officers will be sworn in on Sunday September 22nd at the end of church services.

Our annual Chinese Auction has been scheduled for Tuesday November 12th at the Watermill at 6:30pm. Please support this event by purchasing raffle tickets, donating a gift card or gift basket, being an event spon-sor and most importantly, attending the event. Our theme this year is Light, Camera, Auction and we are planning a glamourous, star studded evening for you!!

The New

Translation of

the Divine

Liturgy Through the Synod of Bishops we have a new translation and text for the parishes of the Archdio-cese of the Divine Liturgy.

Why? Language is always evolving, and for trans-lations to approach the sense and meaning of its original, it must be refreshed. This translation in-cludes in-depth comparisons with existing transla-tions, new translation of the original text and re-view by select clergy. We now have a liturgy book to effect uniformity of practice and understanding throughout the parishes of the Archdiocese.

The cost of the new pew Liturgy books is $2,500

News From Our Hellenic

Dancers

In February 2019, a group of volunteers came together in

St. John’s hall with the hope of spending one night a

week learning Greek dances to have fun, get some exer-

cise and form some camaraderie

Fast forward 6 months later and the St. John’s Hellenic Dancers of Blue Point are flourishing thanks to the sup-port of Father Dean Panagos and the St. John’s commu-nity. The group has already performed over 10 times

around Long Island at Greek festivals and cultural nights with a growing portfolio of dances from various re-gions of Greece. Our group consists of students, teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs and professionals of every background from multiple parishes on Long Island. We are currently open for more volunteers to join our ‘Dance Star’ family. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older to join and willing to practice a minimum of once a week. Currently the group is fundraising to get more authentic costumes so be sure to come to the Fall Kick Off Picnic where we’ll be selling t-shirts and home-made gifts. For updates on upcoming shows be sure to follow the St. John’s Facebook page and follow the monthly bulletin.
