Spring is a time or new beginnings. With new beginningsusually come bittersweet endings. Every quarter, studentswork hard, putting in long hours, going through sleeplessnights and having to juggle classes and homework withmaybe several jobs at the same time. Every year, they puttogether their own exceptional projects rom each course to

build their portolio. They create their own side projects toorm structure and help develop their crat.

The Ai Austin instrutors push them weekbyweek improvingtheir skills and preparing them or later challenges. They trainthem or the uture and their potential careers. They share theircurrent job experiences in the hopes to carry on the knowledgeo how it is to be truly ullled in the real world.

They endure it all to get to this very moment...Excited, nervous, and proud these are only some o thewords that could describe the amilies and riends that attended the graduation ceremony held on June 15, 2011 at thePhillips Event Center in Austin, TX. By 5:00pm, thirty eagergraduates were in a private room away rom the audience

waiting or their time to arrive. As an aspiring graduate, it was easy to be eager or the

ceremony to begin. Some o the students o the graduating class are good riends o mine so I elt reminiscent o aproud sister cheering on with all o the others. Having beenthere through some o the challenges that they had surpassed was something that I elt privileged to be a part o.

    HAPPENING AT AI AUSTIN

Student groups Shudder Budder and the Ai Austin Film Clubhosted the Digital Rumble Wednesday May 18th to showcasethe hard work o uture photography and lm alumni. Laughterand chatter lled the halls o Ai as students and sta membersgathered or a showing o work rom young and talented artists.Free pizza and drinks were available to the viewers.

The short lms presented contained a wide variety o lms, including zombie, action, and comedy shorts. A documentaryshort o a local underground metal scene captured a number ounexpected reactions as well. One student stated, I can relate

The Art Institute o Austin hosted a Veterans Day Dinner onMay 10, 2011 to support all o the veterans that attend classes

on campus. The Veterans Dinners are held quarterly to allow those students who have served or are on reserve tocome together.

and appreciate some o the emotions that were expressed during the interviews being a metal enthusiast mysel. It was kindaunny watching everyones shocked reactions to some o what

was said.I you enjoyed the short lms, then photography had just

as much to oer. Student photographers captured images oabstract, nature, landscapes, andsports images. Photo essays included a documentary o a localphotographer and a documentary o a ew proud students playing or the University o Texas atAustin Longhorn Marching Band. One Ai viewer commented, Iveexperienced perorming in ront

o big crowds or my high schoolmarching band. Once you stepout onto the eld, the adrenalinerush was overwhelming. I canteven imagine how much greaterthe rush would be or a crowd that massive.

Overall the Rumble was a success. Even weeks ater the showthere were still talks o what had been seen that aternoon. Thehope o another is denitely in the air.

President Monica Jes began the dinner by thanking thosewho attended and opening up the oor to discussion overthe new changes in legislation regarding the dierent unding. The Yellow Ribbon Program and VA orms were some othe main topics.

The administration wanted to make sure the veterans werebeing taken care o to the best o their ability. They invitedspecial guest speaker Bobbie Evans to come speak to themabout PTSD. She discussed the dierent trauma levels andhow it was not a onesizetsall deal, that everyone hastheir own experiences and everyone has their own activa

tions or it and that coming together to discuss it helps.Among the aculty we want to be there, even i it is just totalk, Susan Turner adds in.

The idea urther turned into a club that could come aboutbetween the Veterans. I thought it was cool, very inormative, useul and could help us change or the better, DetrickJales, whom is enlisted in the Navy, said ater the dinner. He

was quite excited to hear a ormation o a Veterans Clubbeing considered. So keep your eyes open, there could beanother new club ormed by next quarter.

On Tuesday April 26, 2011 The Art Institute o Austin heldPizza with the Pros. Special guest David Karabinas, Production Manager at The Texas Crew, Inc. was the Pro o this lecture.

As the students consumed ree pizza, David started o bydescribing the details o what his job entails. They lm and

produce television documentaries and eatures or manyclients including NBC Sports, 60 Minutes, Dateline NBC, MTV,CocaCola, NFL Network, and Fox Sports.

Once he went through the work he does, it was time or thestudents to ask questions. What audio do yall deal with?one student asked. David explained how it was not only lmengineers they use, but audio engineers as well. They usequite a bit o audio men as well as cameramen, especially onthe eld.

Pride Alliance held their nal meeting in a bit o an unexpected way: they wanted to end the quarter in a un, yetproductive event. For their last meeting, they held a PaintWar; a Paint War that would be a un way to show our prideand have a great time together without excluding anyone, as

Ai Austin student Leah Short said.

I thought it was very interesting. Especially when he talkedabout the dierent experiences he has had working at TexasCrew, Huck Medrano says.

Even though I am not a lm major, I ound the talk veryinteresting. The speaker was able to clearly answer the questions asked and gave a good idea on what to expect with thatjob position. I think it was really helpul to more than just lm

students, Ai student Pedro Zendejas said. One main thing that David wanted the students to takewith them was the quality o their work. His crew gives theirbest quality whether the job they are working on is goingto be seen by 2 people or by thousands o people. It is hardto come across, but it stands out rom our crew. At the endo the day it is not how much you get paid or i you want todo the job, it is that you put the same quality o work into allyour projects.

The Paint War was held o campus, over o o ShorelineDrive. The hidden idea behind the idea o having a Paint Warwas an alternative to having shorts printed ater the budget

cut, Short says. Ater abouteleven people showed up,the paint was opened and thewar began. The paint ew inall directions. The color o therainbow was seen on clothes, aces, grass, and even cameras. There were a ew unexpected changes to plan at the

last minute, but overall we had a good turnout, made someawesome shirts, met some new riends, and had the coolestendoquarter meeting ever! Short adds.

Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and nobody even mindedhaving the paint slung over them, covering them rom headto toe. So i youre looking or new ideas in your clubs, thismight be inspiring as an idea to keep in mind.

    Film Reviews

We are in summer blockbuster season yet again. Thankully,Hollywood is apparently back on track ater a tepid seasonlast year (all lms called Inception aside):

Director J.J. Abrams Super 8 is the story o a group oyoung wannabe lmmakers in a small Ohio town who suddenly nd themselves in a plot straight out o the Romeroesque short they are attempting to make: a mysterious trainaccident, a military coverup, and an alien cube recoveredrom the wreckage. J.J. Abrams draws inspiration rom theSpielberg lms o the 70s and 80s, playing homage to thelikes o Close Encounters o the Third Kind and E.T., but hethankully avoids the pitall o melodramatic sentimental

ity that oten undercuts the sincerity o Spielbergs work.Abrams rmly grounds the lm in the emotions o his characters. Even as the town is plagued by a seemingly extraterrestrial menace, it never loses ocus o main character Joe Lamb(played by newcomer Joel Courtney) as he deals with hismothers death and relationships with his best riend Charles(Riley Griths), ather (Kyle Chandler), and new love interestAlice (Elle Fanning). Even though it occasionally indulges inexcessive and unnecessary action set pieces (Abrams stillcannot seem to avoid those in his lms), the perormances

are solid all around especially rom actors so young.I still marvel that they manage to avoid spending the whole

lm screaming in each others aces (yet another improvement over the work o Spielberg.) Fanning in particular recallsa young Sissy Spacek. For me at least, it was a wellcratedbit o nostalgia, as i I had rewatched a avorite lm rom the80s and discovered it was even better than I remembered(and believe me, that almost never happens.)

X-Men: First Class, on the other hand, rests rmly in therealm o comic book sized emotions and ambitions. Thelm ollows Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) as he begins thejourney that will lead him to create Xaviers School or Gited

Youngsters with the help o his adopted sister Raven (Jennier Lawrence) ater they are recruited to stop the villainousSebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) by CIA agent Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne).

Meanwhile, Charles orms a close bond with new ally, ErikLehnsherr (Michael Fassbender), even as the latters past asa Holocaust survivor/human test subject threaten to sendthem on drastically dierent paths (can we say: Magneto,

the Master o Magnetism?) Anyone who is amiliar with thecomics or the previous lms knows where this is going, butdirector Matthew Vaughn brings a 60s air that keeps thingsinteresting even i they are never particularly deep.

It is a welcome change ater the garish and bland sciencection trappings o Bryan Singers tenure as X-Men director.Shaw attempts to use the Cuban Missile Crisis to his advan

tage, and he sports a Nehru jacket and stealth nuclear subhidden in his yacht. Telepathic villainess Emma Frost (JanuaryJones, very much at home here ater her time on Mad Men)sports outts that would have made Emma Peel envious. Allo this makes or an enjoyable summer lm. I it has any major aws, it is that it relies too heavily on callbacks to Singerslms. I eel a ull reboot is in store, and the lm cannot makeup its mind whether it is that or a mere prequel. Marvel is stilla bit short o nding an equivalent to Christopher Nolans Batman lms, but they are getting there.

    Music Reviews

For those o us that could deal with a little less pop artistryin their lives, two alternative giants have recently releasednew albums:

TV on the Radio ollows up 2008s Dear Science withtheir new album Nine Types o Light. It is a logical progression that has brought them rom the abstract punk noise otheir earlier albums to ully eshed experimentation o thisnew album. They may have lost some o the distortion, but

they still crat songs o controlled chaos around samples ohorns and wailing saxophones. It is not many bands that canturn out prog rock numbers like Killer Crane as readily asthey do Princestyle unk songs like New Cannonball Blues. They o course still remember their roots with the anarchy otracks like Caeinated Consciousness.

However, whether they are reerencing the 80s with Repetition or creating beauty out o electronic uzz on All Falls

Down, TV on the Radio manages to always sound exactlylike themselves and their various experiments are never justposturing. The deluxe edition even includes two remixes othe song Will Do, and the Switch Remix runs circles aroundthe original.

The band Low also continues to push the envelope o its ownsound on their new album, CMon. While not as successul as the masterpiece Drums and Guns, it still eatures the

band mostly awake rom the ten year minimalist daydream otheir early career. Loud guitars, loud or Low anyway, eatureheavily in menacing tracks such as Witches and Especially Me.

They return to their stripped down roots on songs like

$20 and Majesty/Magic, and Alan Sparhawk and Mimi

Parkers vocals are still harmonized, beautiul desolation. Onlybythenumber tracks such as Try to Sleep and You SeeEverything hold the album back. However, Low more thanmakes up or these missteps with the eight minute opusNothing But Heart. The song starts slowly and quietly andbuilds to noisy ury by the end, a commentary on Lows musical career it seems. Somethings Turning Over closes thealbum perectly. Though it is not the best Low album, it is stilla really good album and still worth a listen when you need alittle icy chill out during your hot summer nights.
