Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ

So All May Experience God’s Life-Giving Love

The church calendar is interesting one. Last Sunday, we celebrated the festival of Christ the King. During this past year our liturgical cycle has moved from the whole world waiting for its Savior, through the coming of an infant in poverty and obscurity, his dying, rising, and returning to the Father, the church's own pilgrimage in the image of Christ, to his final coming trailing on clouds of glory. We reach the liturgical end of the story.

Now we are in the season of Advent. The season also challenges us to fulfill John the Bap-

tist’s exhortation: “Prepare the way of the Lord” (Matthew 3:3). The word “Advent” means com-ing or arrival. In its basic meaning, it refers to the historical coming of Christ in human form. It also refers to the ascended Lord, who will return at the end of time, to bring in the fullness of God’s Kingdom. Advent is the season to watch and wait, expectantly, joyfully. It is also the time to make ready for the coming of Jesus Christ.

Are we ready? In this spirit of preparation, let us reflect on our readiness to receive the Lord. Have

we kept our hearts open to Christ? Are we ready and willing to receive his transforming presence in our lives? As we prepare for Christ’s birthday, are we preparing for our own personal rebirth?

As a church, have we maintained a state of preparedness? If Christ were to appear in our

doorway during Advent, would we run toward or away from him? More importantly, would he walk in, or walk by? How have we – members of Hawaii District of United Methodist Church – prepared way of the Lord? Maybe we can join the campaign of Imagine No Malaria and helping pregnant women and children.

Hope to show the light for those who lost their way of life and try to find the way out in

their situations. Let's show the light, hope, love for others in this Christmas season if you are ready.

Peace to all,

Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han

Double Your Giving on #givingtuesday Imagine No Malaria

In Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria kills mostly pregnant women and chil-dren under the age of 5, every 60 seconds. But, malaria is 100% pre-ventable and we have just about $1.7 million to go in achieving our goal of $3 million here in the California-Pacific Conference. We would like to ask all Hawaii District UMC churches to come together and give a combined donation to the Imagine No Malaria campaign by April 2016.

Please make the check payable to the “HUMU”.

“AS WE JOURNEY”

“May our journey lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered.” Aloha and E Komo Mai! “Happy Thanksgiving” Thank you Jailu Navarrete, our Associate District Lay Leader for your inspiring article advocating for Social Justice. The Social Principles of the United Methodist Church should be our guide post as Meth-

odist proclaiming the “Good News” in our every day lives. “AS WE JOURNEY” we celebrate one of the great traditions of the United Methodist Church. Local churches are held accountable for the expectation and hope in the sharing of the “Good News” of Jesus Christ as we gather for our Charge Conference where we acknowledge and recognize the body of Christ in ministry. We are thankful for the clergy for their endless shepherding of the church. We are thankful for the laity who is the com-munity of faith living out the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are thankful for the UMC in support of laity in ministry. The UMC equip and develop lay people to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. In my last article I shared the Walk To Em-maus Ministry as a vital program in the development of leadership in the local church. As we continue to celebrate laity in ministry, we recognize other programs. The Basic Lay Servant, the Certified Lay Servant, the Certified Lay Speaker, and the Certified Lay Minister are just a few effective programs in the UMC. As the UMC continue to equip and develop lay people in ministry, the fruits we bear will perpetuate our identify as United Methodist. “AS WE JOURNEY” in Sunday worship, we see laity in ministry in the Order of Worship, from the Proclamation of the Word to the Response. We see lay people leading Bible Study of all ages, preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, assisting clergy in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. We see them leading in singing praises to the Lord, in prayer, in times of reflection, devotion, meditation, revealing God’s glory in an inspiring worship. From an inspiring worship experience we continue to worship with an outward expression of God’s love. “AS WE JOURNEY” in ministry we evangelize Christ with acts of compassion for those in needs with prayers and kind words. We prepare and serve hot meals to the homeless in shelters. We visit the sick in homes, nursing facilities, in hos-pice care, and those in prison. We are in ministry advocating for the common god for all humanity. Today we have Labor Unions looking after the rights of workers. Today we have Common Cause advocating for social justice from immigration to gender equality. Today we have FACE (Faith In Action for Community Equity) a faith-base organization of inter-faith communities that advocate for reform in government. These are just a few places where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered. “AS WE JOURNEY” let us be pro-active and be a part of the solution in making our community a better place by connect-ing with these agencies. Through the years my wife JoAnn and I have come to know Matthew Taufetee. Today Matt’s life changing experience in Christ gave him a second chance. Matt’s appreciation and love for Christ is the Executive Director of Life After Prison (LAP). It is a program for the incarcerated transitioning into the community in a group home on the campus of Pacific Islander UMC located in Palolo Valley. Matt has a story to tell, with confidence our District Superintendent and I encourage you to invite Matt to your church to share his testimony. As we continue to celebrate laity in ministry let us be thankful and celebrate “Thanksgiving Day” with great joy for the best is yet to come. Let us pray: We are called to heal the broken, to be hope for the poor, we are called to feed the hungry at our door. Amen. (The second verse from No Ke Ano’ Ahi Ahi, music, Traditional Hawaiian melody adopted by David Haas)

One in Christ, Francis Fukumoto Hawaii District Lay Leader

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Monday, January 18, 2016

Ala Moana Beach Park, Magic Island

It's that time of the year again when United Methodists from across the island of Oahu come to-gether and march for peace; march for justice and make a joyful noise and witness. It is time for our annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march on Monday, January 19th.

As we are marching this year, let us remember to celebrate and honor memory of Dr. King's contribution to the Civil

Rights movement and racial equality. But let us also remember and commit ourselves to his belief and commitment to

non-violence and the power of Jesus Christ's central commandments to love our neighbors and to love God. And this

includes loving our enemies. As Dr. King stated: "Hate can not drive out hate. Only love can do that." And, "I have de-

cided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden." We need this message to resonate in our culture and society (and

world) now more than ever -- and on many different levels.

So, come join us. As usual we will meet at Magic Island, Ala Moana Beach Park. We need to gather

at no later than 8:30 a.m. As usual, I am sure we will be able to find one another, march together,

and sing some songs as we march to the Kapiolani Park Bandstand. Many of our churches make

this a day-long celebration. There are plenty of vendors, plenty of entertainment -- and the beach is

just across the street. Besides the annual district meeting, this event has drawn more churches

and members together than any other event during the year. If you have any questions, please call

Roman Leverenz at 779-7084.

HO’OKU’IKAHI RECONCILIATION COMMENORATION Sunday, January 17, 2016

Harris UMC On July 17, 2016 7-8:30pm the 23rd Annual Ho'oku'ikahi Reconciliation Commemoration Day will be hosted by Harris United Methodist Church. All are invited to attend this Interfaith justice and reconciliation worship service. The twenty-seven legislature of the State of Hawaii on February 27, 2014 passed the Senate Resolution 21 recognizing January 17 of every year as Ho'oku'ikahi Day. Or Reconciliation Day, in honor and remembrance of justice, reconcilia-tion, and nonviolence of Queen Lili'uokalani. The Hawaii District Leadership team on July 18, 2015 voted unanimously to endorse this event to join the partnership and collaboration with historic churches such as Kawaiahao, Central Union, Kaumakapili, St. Augustine, Cathedral of St. Andrews and community groups and organizations including the Interfaith Alliance of Hawai'i, the Forgiveness Project, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and many other non-profit organizations. The worship service will be representative of the many groups that support forgiveness, reconciliation and non-violence that is grounded within their own beliefs and practice. Hawaii District Superintendent the Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han will be one of the special guest speakers of the evening.
