ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ
So All May Experience God’s Life-Giving Love
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest…” (Matthew 11:28)
****** Congratulations to All Our Pastors and Churches *********** We met our Goal of 100% in Apportionment Giving for 2015!!!
Great teamwork Pastors and Church Members! I deeply appreciate all your dedication and leadership in pulling together in unity. We could not have made our goal without you and your church members.
Special thanks from our Bishop Minerva Carcaño to the people of the Hawaii District.
As we begin our new year together, let us embrace all willing hands and hearts to continue to pull faithful leadership and service through this new year.
Blessings to all moving forward.
Did you know that when I was in high school I dreamed of becoming a great writer? But somehow I could-n’t accomplish what I dreamt about. My writing teacher taught me how to find what she called “window in” to whatever story I was working on. This was especially helpful when I had been working hard, only to come to a dead end, or when I couldn’t see where the story should go, or when I couldn’t think of anything to write about at all. These “windows in” were often just simple, gentle, small steps but they got me back into the place, and from there I could go on to complete the story. Something similar might be true of a spiritual journey, when you feel as if you’ve reached a dead end, or when you’ve blocked, after a long hard searching journey. It would be great if someone could show you a ‘window in.” In the passage from Matthew, Jesus offers a “window in” to those desperately trying to find God. “The way to know God is...by giving attention to Jesus Christ, for in him we see what God is like.” Ash Wednesday ushers us into the Lenten season. Lent lasts forty days of Jesus’ wilderness experience where he was faced with temptation. In Scripture forty days, forty years is often the duration of a time of punishment, repentance, fasting, or vigil: the children of Israel were in the wilderness forty years; Jonah preached that Nineveh would be destroyed in forty days; Acts 1:3 reports that the risen Christ appeared to his followers for forty days before his ascension. Lent would be a good time to seek that window -- through a Bible study or attending Ash Wednesday Ser-vice, or Lenten Study. It’s a good time to be a window, too -- to invite someone to church, perhaps? Please join with me in forty days of Lenten journey. Grace and peace, Rev. Se Hee Han District Superintendent

“AS WE JOURNEY”
“May our journey lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered.” Aloha and E Komo Mai ! “Happy New Year !” I trust we all enjoyed the “Holiday Season” filled with God’s grace and thanksgiving. Thank you sister Helena Ogle, our Associate District Lay Leader for your article filled with God’s Love for the world.
“Thanks be to God !” “Alleluia !”
I trust the God of Epiphany will continue to appear, to reveal God’s calling to the life of the church. May the sea-son of Epiphany calls the church into a time of unity reaching out to all people. “AS WE JOURNEY” the Good News of Jesus Christ is shared in many meaningful ways that lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered. Yesterday my wife JoAnn and I were invited by our District Superintendent to a special Camp Mekokiko Devel-opment meeting at the District office. Sitting among those with high interest in the progress of the development of the camp were Bill Burton (HUMU), Rev. Richard Matsushita (retired clergy Camping Ministry), and Jim Monk (member of Camp Mekokiko Development Committee). It was such a humbling moment “hearing” the very heart-beat of our people on the Big Island (Hilo, Kona, Naalehu, and Honoka’a churches with a vision and dream to build a camp site on a 36-acre property laying on top of the slope of beautiful and sacred Mauna Kea. With excitement and high enthusiasm this project was launched 10 years ago and currently with tired and wea-ry bodies, we’re just about to see light at the end of the tunnel. The light burns bright and at times not as bright. We close the meeting with prayer and made covenant to continue the dialog in Holy Conference. “AS WE JOURNEY” we start to “feel” the very heart-beat of our people on the Big Island. Ten years of faithful dedication of energy, time, and resources have impacted them physically, mentally, and spiritually. Romans 15:1 We who are strong in the faith ought to help the weak to carry their burdens. We should not please ourselves. May this passage be a source of enlightenment that embodies the Hawaii District UMC as one church, in the spirit of unity, one body in Christ Jesus. “AS WE JOURNEY” we journey together “hearing” and “feeling” the very heart-beat of the church. The vision and dream to built Camp Mekokiko is “our” vision and dream. We the Hawaii District claim proud owners of Camp Mekokiko. Let us collectively start to re-store the excitement and high enthusiasm. These are the signs of Epiphany which I believe God will appear and reveal to us all. “AS WE JOURNEY” in the season of Epiphany like the “Visitors from the East” may we see (his) star and be led to the Christ child. And may we continue to celebrate the “New Year” with great joy and thanksgiving for the best is yet to come. Let us pray: You will lead and we shall follow, you will be the breath of life, living water, we are thirsting for your light. Amen. (the forth verse from No Ke Ano’ Ahi Ahi, music, Traditional Hawaiian melody adopted by David Haas) One in Christ, Francis Fukumoto Hawaii District Lay Leader

There are many important financial decisions to make at retirement. What distribution options are available? What options should I choose? Can I still invest with The General Board in retire-ment? The presentation from The General Board of Pension and Health Benefits is targeted for those clergy who have these and other questions relating to their pension with The United Methodist Church.
Benefit Educator, Peter Hang from The General Board of Pension & Health Benefits will provide in-depth information to: Help you understand the clergy pension plans including the Clergy Retirement Security Program (CRSP), equip you to make informed decisions regarding distribution options, interpret your personal pension projection printout, and he will be available for private consultations at the end of the workshop.
Please register by downloading the registration form from the Hawaii District website under “Events “ + Pre-Retirement Workshop. Bento lunches will be provided for $13.00 prepared by the Aiea Korean UMC women.
Congratulations to Rev. Samuel Cox!
He was recently informed that he was selected for the “2016 Outstanding Contribution to Specialized Ministry Award.” Upon receiving his nomination, the Alumni/ae Awards Nominating Committee unanimously decided that he was truly deserving of this recognition.
Pastor Sam was nominated by his long-time mentor, the Rev. Dr. William Hall, whom Sam met when Dr. Hall helped coordinate the Religious Emphasis Week on the Kansas State Teachers College when Sam was a college sophomore. Dr. Hall has encouraged Samuel’s ministry in social services throughout the past 60 years.
Samuel, who also has a degree in Social Work, was a social work missionary to Japan with the World Board of Missions, before coming to Hawaii as the director of the Moiliili Community Center in Honolulu. In 1975 he helped to found Hale Kipa for Runaway Youth, and served as executive director for 23 years. He also helped found The Interfaith Alliance Hawaii (TIAH), an advocacy alliance of persons of the Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Baha’I faiths. In 1998 he retired from Hale Kipa, and then served for 16 years as part-time associate pastor at Kailua United Methodist Church. In 2013, Samuel offered his home in Enchanted Lake to be a transition house for women rebuilding their lives after serving time at the Women’s Facility (WCCC) in Kailua. The letter from Iliff School of Theology ends with this paragraph: “Because ministry is an act of service, and one that you perform so selflessly, receiving an award for that work can seem somewhat conflicting. Thank you for allowing us to honor you and for repre-senting Iliff so well as you care for many in this complex world.”
