Volkswagen’s first entrant into the compact SUV segment – the practical, versatile T-Cross – is on sale in the UK priced from £16,995 RRP OTR at launch (April 2019). The fashionable and stylish new compact SUV joins a comprehensively broad five-strong family of Volkswagen SUVs, ranging in size from the compact and adaptable T-Cross to the luxurious and technologically advanced. This wave of new SUVs began in 2015 with the introduction of the latest second generation Tiguan, followed by the T-Roc, Tiguan Allspace and new Touareg. The T-Cross completes the brand’s conventional engine SUV line-up and is the entry point into Volkswagen SUV ownership.

The compact new T-Cross packs no less of a technological punch than its larger siblings, with the standard fitment of numerous safety assistance systems more commonly associated with larger and more expensive cars. This helps to realise the T-Cross’s tag line – ‘I am more than one thing’ – since the new model is compact yet practical, affordable yet stylish and generously equipped as standard. Indeed the latest Volkswagen SUV can justly claim to set the standard for its segment with a blend of usability and style as it boasts the rugged look of a compact SUV, but dimensions and a driving experience suited to urban life.

Arriving in the UK in April 2019, the T-Cross offers a long list of talents, most notably its practicality. The sliding rear bench can move forwards or backwards, providing up to 14 cm of extra leg room in the rear or between 385 and 455 litres of load volume in the luggage area.

Introduction

Based on Volkswagen’s now familiar but almost infinitely flexible Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) the T-Cross shares many strengths with its Polo hatchback sibling, including its range of efficient and advanced petrol engines. Two engine options are available at launch – both 999 cc, three-cylinder TSI units, in 95 PS and 115 PS forms, with the former available with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and the latter paired to either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automatic. Both engine options are compliant with the latest Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

The MQB architecture which underpins the new T-Cross allows the driven front axle to be located well forward, significantly improving this compact car’s packaging and use of space. With a total vehicle length of 4235 mm, the 2551 mm wheelbase is comparatively generous, allowing a spacious interior with enough room for five people. Alternatively, the 385-455 litre boot can be extended to a cavernous 1,281 litres with the seats folded.

Standard equipment for new T-Cross in the UK includes numerous driver assistance systems which were previously reserved for higher vehicle classes. Together with the new car’s outstanding crash performance characteristics and exemplary occupant protection, these increase safety, reduce the risk of a collision and improve driving comfort. Included as standard equipment are the Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking; the lane keeping assistant Lane Assist; Hill Start Assist; the proactive occupant protection system and the Blind Spot Detection lane change assist system with integrated Rear Traffic Alert. Also available as options are the Driver Alert System, automatic adaptive cruise control and Park Assist.

The new T-Cross provides the highest level of networking and connectivity. Even the operation and customisation of the on-board functions are intuitive. Smartphones can be charged inductively, and up to four USB ports – two front and two for rear seat passenger use – provide for comprehensive digital convenience.

Just like its sister model the Polo, the new T-Cross is manufactured at the Spanish Volkswagen factory in Pamplona. Volkswagen is set to invest one billion euros there by the end of 2019 in order to serve the particularly strong growth in the market for compact SUVs. At the same time, approximately 10% more jobs are being created there. For the 2017-2027 period, independent forecasting institutes expect an approximate doubling worldwide of so-called CUVs (Crossover Utility Vehicles) in the small car segment – the class to which T-Cross belongs. In South America and China – two further growth regions – versions of the T-Cross specially tailored for those markets are being made.

T-Cross summary

• T-Cross was previewed in concept guise at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, appearing there in radical cabriolet form as the T-Cross Breeze

• The urban-friendly compact SUV was unveiled to European audiences in production form on Thursday 25 October 2018 at an event in Amsterdam

• Orders opened in the UK on 5 March 2019, with a starting price of £16,995 RRP OTR

• The car is initially offered in the UK with a choice of two efficient turbocharged petrol engines, equipped with petrol particulate filters from launch. They are the 1.0 TSI 95 PS or the 1.0 TSI 115 PS. Five- or six-speed manual, or seven-speed DSG transmissions are available

• All versions of this practical and stylish compact SUV are exclusively offered in front-wheel drive

• Volkswagen’s first ever compact SUV has a length of 4,108 mm and a height of 1,558 mm. It is therefore larger than a Polo (4,053 mm and 1,461 mm respectively) and smaller than a T-Roc (4,234 mm and 1,573 mm)

• The T-Cross will accommodate up to five adults. Load space is variable, and class- leading, thanks to the significant extra flexibility afforded by the sliding rear seat – a rarity in this class – and measures between 385 litres and 455 litres with the rear seats up

• The high seating position in the T-Cross is typical of an SUV: 597 mm at the front and 652 mm at the rear

• New T-Cross offers premium segment connectivity and safety technology such as the availability of Volkswagen’s second generation Active Info Display as well high- end infotainment and state-of-the-art assistance systems

• By virtue of its MQB underpinnings, the spectrum of assistance systems in the T-Cross showcases Volkswagen’s expertise in technology with the likes of Front Assist featuring Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking; Blind Spot Monitor; ACC Adaptive Cruise Control; Lane Assist; Rear Traffic Alert and the e-call emergency alert and support service all available

• Convenient and intuitive features include up to four USB ports (two at the front, two at the rear) and optional wireless smartphone charging for optimum connectivity

• The optional keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access makes access to the T-Cross more convenient, while the also optionally available Light Assist main-beam control system automatically ensures that the driver is always supported with main beam whenever possible

• Personalisation is further elevated courtesy of a variety of bold exterior colours; a contrasting dashpad decor and various interior trim versions

• Worldwide, Volkswagen assumes that over the next ten years the annual global sales volume of the small SUV sector will grow from around 6.4 million units today to around 10.6 million

• The best-selling version of the car from launch is expected to be the T-Cross SE 1.0 115 PS six-speed manual

• Total Volkswagen sales in the UK last year, including CV models, were 203,133 and year-to-date (March 2019) Volkswagen retains second spot in the UK market overall

• The model line-up in UK is the familiar S, SE, SEL and R-Line trims. The car’s starting price is £16,995 for the 1.0-litre TSI 95 PS-engined S model

• A launch edition of the versatile T-Cross, named T-Cross First Edition and totalling 250 cars, is available to order in the UK now priced at £23,155 RRP OTR. Full info on that vehicle can be found here: vwpress.co.uk/ en-gb/releases/3646

• Initially all T-Cross models sold in the UK will be petrol-powered, and approximately half of T-Cross sales are anticipated to be to private buyers. The new model will be available with front-wheel drive

• The remainder of the range opened for order in the UK in March 2019 and T-Cross arrived in the Volkswagen UK Retailer network in April 2019

Volkswagen’s efficient and advanced 1.0 TSI (999 cc) three-cylinder petrol engine exclusively powers the T-Cross at launch, in 95 PS and 115 PS outputs. As an urban-friendly compact SUV, it is also front-wheel drive only – allowing the optimum blend of efficiency and usability for life around town, as well as out of it. The lower-powered option is exclusively available with a five-speed manual gearbox, and is available on S and SE trims. Also found in the Polo, this compact and efficient transverse-installed 1.0-litre three cylinder TSI unit features in-line direct injection with two valves per cylinder. The turbocharged engine is fitted with electric boost pressure regulation, and returns 48.6-48.9 mpg combined on the WLTP cycle, with CO2 emissions of 131 g/km (WLTP).

Peak power for the 95 PS variant is reached between 5,000-5,500 rpm, while maximum torque of 175 Nm is available from 2,000-3,500 rpm. The T-Cross reaches 62 mph from a standstill in 10.2 sec, while the top speed is 112 mph.

Engine, transmissions and running gearSE, SEL and R-Line-spec cars are available with a 115 PS variant of this engine – this engine also appears in the up! GTI, Polo, Golf, and T-Roc. It, too, is a transverse-installed 1.0-litre three cylinder direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, with four valves per cylinder and electric boost pressure regulation. Its peak power of 115 PS is available from 5,000-5,500 rpm, while its 200 Nm torque peak arrives across the same 2,000-3,500 rpm rev band as its 95 PS sibling. Unlike the lower-powered variant, however, the 115 PS T-Cross gets two transmission options – a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic. With a 6-speed manual gearbox, the T-Cross returns 48.3 mpg on the combined cycle, and emits 132 g/km CO2 ; with the 7-speed DSG, it offers 45.7 mpg and 140 g/km CO2 emissions.

As with its siblings in the Volkswagen range, the T-Cross sits on the now familiar MQB – Modular Transverse Matrix, which means it benefits from the latest available technology and shares elements of its underpinnings with other successful new models such as the new Polo, new Passat, Touran, Tiguan SUV and Tiguan Allspace.

The T-Cross enters the Volkswagen UK line-up as the smallest in the five-strong SUV family. The Golf VII is Volkswagen UK’s best-selling car, having found homes on 5,931 driveways in the UK this year so far (March 2019). The Polo takes second spot, with 4,475 registrations over the same period, while the Tiguan and T-Roc take third and fourth with 3,148 and 2,649 respectively.

This prevalence for Volkswagen SUVs is felt across Europe – in February 2019 the T-Roc and Tiguan were Europe’s best-selling SUVs, and the seventh and tenth best-sellers overall across the 27 states. The T-Cross looks to continue this success in the UK, with a substantial amount of interest in the model pre-launch from the UK’s car-buying public. Orders for the new T-Cross opened on 5 March 2019, although a 250-unit run of First Edition cars were available to order for early-bird customers from 5 February.

UK customers are anticipated to configure the SE-spec T-Cross in 110 PS 6-speed manual form more than any other, with a little over half of all UK T-Cross sales expected to be in this specification.

Market information

Outwardly, the new T-Cross is more of a traditional, two-box SUV shape than its larger sibling, the T-Roc, and many of its market competitors. This helps to maximise interior space, while maintaining the rugged look that many buyers of small SUVs prefer.

The Volkswagen SUV DNA is clear to see from the car’s front-end design, however, from the squircular light surrounds in the front bumper, to the three-strip grille with single strip of chrome trim running horizontally through its centre, joining the line of the daytime running lights on each side.

This line resumes at the side of the car, where it dissects the car’s profile with an accent strip which incorporates the door handles. It is here where the T-Cross’s upright stance is most prominent, with roof rails (SE spec and above) adding to the visual height from the side. An exclusive C-pillar decal marks out First Edition models from

Exterior designthe rest of the T-Cross range, while seven alloy wheel designs, ranging from 16 inches to 18 inches across the line-up further distinguish each specification.

At the rear, design elements such as a prominent roof spoiler help to give the T-Cross a sporting, youthful look, while a heckblende connects the rear light clusters, incorporating a full-width reflector bar – a unique feature in the compact SUV segment, and a distinctive flourish.

Customers also have a wide palette of colours to choose from when configuring their perfect T-Cross – in addition to neutral tones such as Reflex Silver, Urano Grey, Pure White, Limestone Grey, Black and Deep Black, vibrant colours such as Flash Red, Dark Petrol Blue, Champagne Silver, Reef Blue, Energetic Orange and Makena Turquoise are also available, in addition to design packs in Black, Energetic Orange and Bamboo Garden shades, allowing a degree of personalization to each T-Cross.

Practicality is high on the agenda for the interior of the T-Cross, but not at the expense of ergonomics and style. As is typical of Volkswagen: functionality is key. Buttons for all major functions, both for the 8.0-inch Composition Media infotainment system and climate control are within easy reach on the dashboard and steering wheel, with other functions accessible through the car’s touch screen.

Connectivity is high on the agenda for the T-Cross – all models above entry-level S trim come equipped with Car-Net App Connect, which combines the functionality of Apple ‘CarPlay’, Google ‘Android Auto’ and ‘MirrorLink’ ™ allowing ‘mirroring’ of a smartphone display on the infotainment touch-screen, via a USB connection. At SE spec and above, the car is equipped with no fewer than four USB charge points for passengers’ devices – two in the front of the car, and two in the rear – located at the back of the centre console.

The T-Cross seats five, with up to 14 cm of extra leg room available for the rear-seat passengers thanks to the sliding rear bench. Each spec includes its own cloth type for the interior upholstery, ranging from ‘Basket’, to ‘Carbon Flag’, or with coloured upholstery if a design pack is selected – Black, Energetic Orange and Bamboo Garden Green.

With the design packs, the T-Cross’s upholstery gains a three-tone design, with the bolsters and headrests of the seats finished in complementary colours depending on which pack is selected. Matching coloured dashpads are also offered in these design packs, as well as coloured trim in the steering wheel and centre console.

Volkswagen offers customers a choice of servicing regime for their T-Cross. They can choose Fixed Service or Flexible Service and the appropriate selection is entirely dependent on how the car is likely to be driven and its general use.

The Fixed Service regime is recommended for vehicles that will cover less than 10,000 miles in 12 months and if the vehicle is likely to be used in the following way:• Predominantly urban driving, short journeys with frequent cold starts• Activities regularly producing high engine loading, for example frequent hill climbs, driving with vehicle fully loaded and towing• Driving with high rpm, hard acceleration and heavy braking. In this case, the vehicle will be serviced at regular intervals, at every 10,000 miles or every 12 monthsFlexible Service is recommended for vehicles with a daily mileage of more than 25 miles, where the vehicle is driven regularly and on mainly longer distance journeys. The vehicle should be mainly driven at a constant speed with minimum vehicle and engine loading, minimal towing and driven in an economical manner.

In this case, the on-board computer informs the driver via a dashboard display, when the vehicle needs a service. A range of engine sensors electronically monitors the vehicle’s oil temperature, oil pressure, oil level and brake pad wear to establish when a service is needed. With the Flexible regime, the vehicle can cover typically between 10,000 and 20,000 miles (approx) or 24 months (whichever is sooner) between oil changes. An inspection service is typically due in the third year of ownership or at 40,000 miles and thereafter every second year for vehicles with an annual mileage of around 10,000 miles.

Customers can choose between Fixed and Flexible at PDI (pre-delivery inspection) and though it is possible to change from one to another during the vehicle’s lifetime it can only be done when a full inspection service is due. WARRANTIESThe T-Cross, like all current Volkswagen Passenger Car models in the UK, has a three-year (first- and second-year manufacturer operated, third-year retailer-operated) / 60,000-mile mechanical warranty. In addition, it comes with a 12-year body protection guarantee, three year paint warranty and a year’s membership of Volkswagen Assistance which includes European breakdown cover. The latter can be extended at minimal cost to the customer.
