The Voluntary Trumpet A PUBLICATION OF THE CHARLESTON CHAPTER
OF THE AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS
OCTOBER 2019
The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral
music. We encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; inspire, ed-
ucate, and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; provide networking, fel-
lowship, and mutual support; nurture future generations of organists; promote the organ in
its historic and evolving roles; and engage wider audiences with organ and choral music.
DEAN’S LIST It was great to see so
many of you at Ms.
Rose's for our opening
Eat, Meet and Greet. Be-
ing together was a great
way to move beyond the
anxiety that Hurricane
Dorian brought just days
before and to set the tone for the new academic year.
For our October program we are excited to have one of
our newest members, Matthew Swingle, presenting to us
at CSU. Matthew will be presenting an organ recital with
Julia Harlow on Friday, October 11th and delivering our
program the following Monday at 7:00 p.m. I hope to see
many of you at both events!!

OPENING DINNER OF THE NEW SEASON
Hurricane Dorian arrived a few days before the Charleston Chapter’s opening dinner at Ms. Rose’s Fine
Foods. Power was out for around 72 hours in that part of town, and we weren’t sure how things would
turn out. It all came together in the end, the weather cooperated, and 22 of us gathered for a convivial
evening. To round out the evening, Dean Loretta Haskell devised a quiz for us that was way too hard. In
spite of that, a good time was had by all.
ORGAN WORKSHOP WITH JENNIFER PASCUAL
Fox Music House is sponsoring a FREE organ workshop with Jennifer Pascual
at its showroom at 4248 Dorchester Rd, North Charleston, SC 29405. Ms. Pas-
cual was appointed Director of Music at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City,
in 2003, the first woman to hold his position.
The workshop begins at 10:00 am and continues until noon. A luncheon is pro-
vided. A head count is necessary! Please RSVP to George Hiatt at (843) 296-
8901 (text) or email [email protected].
