An Historical noteThe Walled Garden once formed part of the Knill Court Estate,
of which the Court no longer exists.
At the turn of the 20th Century there were probably at least
three gardener’s cottages forming part of the wall of the
garden. In the mid to late 1900’s these were amalgamated to
create The Walled Garden as it is today.
situationThe small hamlet of Knill is some 4 miles south west of
Presteigne. In the most perfect of settings, tucked away
and yet very accessible, this is the perfect spot for tranquil
living. The house has a wonderful southerly aspect looking
over its mature beautiful garden. The Hindwell Brook, which
eventually flows into the River Lugg, between Shobdon and
Presteigne, mainly forms the southern boundary.
description The lane to Knill ends at The Walled Garden, having passed
St Michael’s church. The drive crosses a gated cattle grid and
sweeps around the curved wall of the garden and under an
arch with a courtyard clock above, to the back of the house.
The setting is special. There are three entrances into the house
along this elevation, the formal one being a Porch leading into
a Hall with the front staircase and cloakroom. Opposite is the
Garden Room with french doors out onto the panoramic terrace.
The Drawing Room has a central chimney with a wood burning
stove serving both sided and French doors on the gable end.
The Dining Room leads directly into the fully fitted Kitchen/
Breakfast Room with its Aga and attractive window seats. Off
the rear Hall is the back staircase with a cupboard under, Pantry
and Utility Room with the central heating boiler and back door.
The second and larger Porch also acts as a Boot Room. The
Sitting Room has an adjoining Bathroom and a glazed door out
into the garden. There are five Bedrooms on the first floor, one
of which is used as a Study, three have their own bathrooms and
the fifth bedroom is off the rear landing.
The adjoining Cottage, called Owl Cottage, is self- contained.
The small reception Hall has a cloakroom and staircase. The
large Living Room adjoins the Kitchen with its back door.
There are three bedrooms and a bathroom, two of the
bedrooms are above the open ended two car garage.
the gardenThe high brick wall of the walled garden is three sided, the open
side being on the south side along the brook and divides the
garden. Outside the wall, the drive has a mature wooded bank
of trees on one side with oak, ash, yew, cherry and lime. A pretty
chestnut has autumn crocusus near the entrance. The back garden
has a large greenhouse and lawns divided by box hedging and a
new mower shed and garden store. The grotto and bog gardens
form the edges of the garden on the north and west side. Within the
wall the expanse of lawn sweeps down to the brook. To one side is a
mature ash. Within the wall are two particularly ornate wrought iron
gates. The terrace beside the house also includes a raised pond.
