NOTES FROM THE CHIEF

MEETINGS

My first San Diego Pontiac Oakland Club International meeting was at El Torito in Mira

Mesa around 2008. I had just bought a 1971 T-37 with a 389 V-8 engine and automatic

transmission and was excited to join this Chapter. Another meeting was held at

Callahan’s in the same shopping center. I think Alan Sugarman was the President. Other

meetings were held at Boll Weevil, Casa Grande, Studio Diner, Bumper Doc, JBA Speed

Shop and Mission Valley Café. We even held our meeting at a car museum in Sorrento

Valley many years ago. Have I forgotten any, please let me know? I think that it was Bill

Baugh that secured the back room at Sizzler for the recent meetings. I have talked to

JBA about holding a meeting there, but the virus hit. Now what?

I hosted a Zoom meeting for our Chapter and it went well for my first rodeo. It was a lot

easier than I thought. Everyone had a chance to talk or voice his or her opinion in a

discussion. Some members wore their San Diego Pontiac Club shirt. One wore his hat. I

saw a red GTO in the background. We even saw a dog on the screen! Geoff Fischer gave a

Treasurer’s Report. Bill Baugh gave us the Car Council report. I missed OM Taylor

giving a Wangers update. Roland Short told us about Chapter activities. Motions were

made and voting was done by holding up our right hands or saying “Aye.” I banged the

gavel on my Wife’s cutting board to start the meeting and when motions were passed. It

was very similar to the way I held the past meetings except we had no food! August’s

meeting will be the same way, online. It was a lot of fun to see those who logged in at

their homes or shop but it just was not the same as everyone meeting together in one

room.

Will that be a thing of the past? Let us discuss this topic at our next meeting along with

other Chapter business. I hope you will join us. Let me know if you want to set up a

“practice meeting” to get familiar with Zoom. It is so easy, even a Caveman can do it!

When was the last time you drove your Pontiac and where did you go? Do you start it up

and drive it every weekend as I do just to charge the battery? Driving nowhere is a great

place to go. Wherever you want. Around the neighborhood or stopping at a store, it is

fantastic to get out and so much fun to drive a Pontiac! Do it. Just drive around and I will

see you on the road!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Tom,

I hope you are doing well, sir. As always, another interesting and informative

Newsletter. Thank You!

I'm responding, not to be argumentative, but to offer the other perspective on COVID-19 that

mainstream media and the medical elite just don't allow us to hear. The numbers of new

cases are up because the numbers of people being tested is at an all-time high. When you

look at number of deaths compared with total # of reported cases, that % continues to get

smaller and smaller (currently about 1/4 of 1%), making cv-19 less lethal than the seasonal

flu. Mainstream media and the Fauci/Gates elite don't report this because mandatory

vaccination is a multi-billion dollar, continuous revenue stream for the Deep State.

The fear-mongering perpetuated by the media is unfortunate. There is no "true" science

behind the wearing of masks and for a COPD patient like myself, the extra CO2 breathed in

as a result is downright dangerous. Dr. Fauci and the WHO both stated back in February

that masks don't have any affect in suppressing the virus. Why do you suppose they have

changed their tune? Herd Immunity has always been nature's way of letting a virus peak

and allowing human beings to develop their natural, permanent immunity to a bug like

this. That's what we did as kids with measles, pumps, chicken pox, etc.

Tom, I'm only responding to your editorial comments because there are truly 2 sides to this

issue, but unfortunately, we are not allowed to hear both sides. That is not the American

way that we are accustomed to. It is sad to see the hysteria generated over COVID-19 and

the unnecessary affect it has had on our lifestyles, personal freedoms and economy.

I wish you, your friends and family a safe and relaxing 4th of July weekend as we celebrate,

now more than ever, the freedom and independence that we enjoy and take for granted in

the USA.

Sincerely,

Dan Birgelaitis

*************************************************************************************

As I read through Tom’s engine article I’m not sure everyone can fully appreciate what those

APU turbines spinning at 64,000 RPM means. That equates to almost 1,100 revolutions per

SECOND. Most of us can’t even grasp that kind of velocity in our minds. For some Naval jets

I flew in my career, my engine turbines also spun at that speed when at maximum power at

101.5%. I often thought of the rotor spitting out those turbine blades at material failure

which they did on rare occasion. Fortunately, the turbine housing contained all that ‘way

beyond’ supersonic shrapnel. We have some amazing machines...

JULY MONTHLY MEETING REPORT

This is what you missed.

On Saturday, July 11 2020, I hosted the first virtual online monthly meeting of

the San Diego Pontiac Club International. This was my first time using Zoom but

I had some help and instructions from my Daughters. The meeting notice was

sent out along with a reminder to join at 4 PM. We had nine members show their

faces on screen with John Tolerico texting in his comments and wisdom. Besides

my Wife Camerin and I, we were glad to see Paul Aguilar, Bill Baugh and his dog,

John Wilkinson and his GTO, J.C. Dumas in his shop, Roland Short, Geoff Fisher

represented by the American flag, and Alec Barbiarz trying to show us his motor.

I called the meeting to order, introduced the Officers and asked everyone what the

temperature was at their place. Geoff Fisher gave a Treasurer’s Report and

commented on having a few car show entries to refund. We discussed giving half

of last year’s car show profits to the Police Historical Society. J.C. Dumas made a

motion to pay them and John Wilkinson seconded it. The vote was unanimous so

the motion was carried and so ordered. Bill Baugh gave a short Car Council report

and announced the cancellation of our Cops & Rodders Fall Pow Wow by the Port

District. He does have a date for next year’s car show. Under Old Business, we

talked about our latest Pontiac & Burgers at STP Bar-N-Grill on May 30. Under

New Business, I reported that I have sold a full-page advertisement for the

newsletter to Firebird Central and are negotiating with Year One to get their

banner on our website and a full-page ad in the newsletter. I sent a birthday card

to Jim Wangers from our Chapter in June. POCI’s Western Director, Ron

Berglund wants me to run for his office as he is running for President of POCI. If

you joined the Zoom meeting, you would have found out what happened to Geoff

Fisher’s 1969 Firebird when he parked it on my street. Finishing up, I thanked

everyone for attending the meeting and asked if anyone drove his or her Pontiac

today. A few members raised their hands besides myself and one member said he

would right after this meeting. Although today, we are not paying our dinner bill

nor are we tipping our waitress, we will soon. The next monthly meeting using

Zoom will be in August. Camerin made a motion to adjourn and John Wilkinson

seconded it. Another unanimous vote closed the meeting. Thank you to everyone

who made this monthly meeting possible and I look forward to seeing more

members in August. This is Chapter business. Your vote counts. Join us next

meeting for some fun!

THE NATIONAL POCI CONVENTION HOSTING INFORMATION PAGES

A LETTER FROM LARRY CRIDER,

POCI PRESIDENT:

To the Members of the San Diego Chapter of POCI:

Glad to hear of interest in the possibilities of hosting

a convention. Hopefully I can enlighten you on the

many changes.

First of all, the big changes are, POCI pays

everything, the local chapter is out nothing.

POCI office personal now handles all of the

registration and any printing and mail outs which is

a huge burden off the chapter. The only items from

the chapter for registration is somebody to help Paul

and Ramona hand out Pre-registered packets and

selling convention shirts at registration.

What we do need from the chapter, is usually a team

of about 8 people to help plan, since Art and myself are not from that

area. Monthly meetings between those 6-8 people to help organize the convention

with the help of Art and myself.

All contracts with hotels and event centers are handled by Art. We do need

suggestions of locations that might fit our convention, then usually the local

committee approaches the local CVB and they usually assist with the cost of bringing

Art and myself out to look at possible property to use.

You do not have to rent an indoor center as usually they are too costly. But

sometimes we can find event centers that work with us on a free building or low cost.

Again, Art works on that and can give them numbers to show our benefit of bringing

the convention to their area.

Yes, we suspect a lower number that far west but that’s ok, it's not about numbers

but giving that area of country and our members a chance to attend a POCI

Convention.

I think in Ontario we had about 250 vehicles but would plan for 250-350. Usually we

ask for space to park 200 trailers and trucks but again that might be a much lower

number as well....

I will attach a guideline of minimum number of workers and area they work. It's just

a guideline. Gettysburg had over 100 volunteers, but Wichita only used about 30.

We are hopeful the chapter will consider to help keep moving the convention to

different parts of the country.

It's also a great way to build your chapter and bring in new people.

Merry Christmas and wishing all a Happy New Year.

Larry Crider

JOIN THE PONTIAC OAKLAND CLUB INTERNATIONAL (POCI)

We Invite You To Join!

Keeping The Pontiac Legacy Alive…

Formed in 1972 by a small group of enthusiasts who wanted to pool as much Pontiac and Oakland information as was possible, the first convention was held the following year in Camp Hill, Pennsyl-vania. Since then, POCI chapters have formed all over the country and POCI Conventions have been held every year in a variety of locations. The events include a car show, tech seminars, presentations, drag racing and a great swap meet. GMC trucks were included in 1998, due to their close relation to Pontiac.

The club’s magazine, Smoke Signals, also started in 1972 and has evolved into a world-class, award-winning monthly that continues to raise the bar for non-commercial publications. Smoke Sig-nals was redesigned in 2006 and again in 2013. Today, it is a 92 to100-page, full-color publication printed on heavyweight paper and also comes in digital form.

We are very excited with the future of the Pontiac hobby and we invite you to join POCI and start receiving Smoke Signals. Please note that members get access to download our digital editions that go all the way back to 2006.

We welcome anyone and everyone with an interest in Pontiacs, Oaklands and GMCs of any age or type to join us. Just use the membership form provided and get in on the action.

Whether you have an early Pontiac, a muscle-era GTO or Firebird, a full-sized Wide Tracker or late-model Trans Am, Solstice, or G8, we have a place for you and your car.

We thank you for your time and look forward to seeing you at a POCI event soon!

AUGUST 2020

The San Diego Chapter of the Pontiac Oakland Club Inter-

national (POCI) was founded in 1989. We are a club dedi-

cated to the preservation and enjoyment of all models of

Pontiacs of all years. We drive ‘em, work on ‘em, polish

‘em, restore ‘em, break ‘em, put ‘em back together again

and have great fun doing it! We are individuals, couples,

and families that enjoy getting together for a variety of ac-

tivities. We host an annual Fall Pow-Wow car show every

summer, and participate as a club in other local and re-

gional shows. We hold annual pool and Christmas parties,

participate in many of the San Diego cruise nights, organ-

ize automotive factory, speed shop and museum tours, and

join in a variety of other events throughout the year. The

cars in the club range from Concourse cars, show cars, daily

drivers, drag racers, and cars undergoing restoration. Our

goal is to have FUN while driving our Pontiacs.
