Of course none of it would have been possible without the play’s director, Mr.Hughes.

“Sweeney Todd” tells the story of a dark and brooding barber who returns to London after serving 15 years in Australia for a crime he did not commit. The barber, formerly Benjamin Barker, now goes by the name of Sweeney Todd and collaborates with Mrs.Lovett, a baker known for making

Cuomo’s reform efforts cause backlashBy M.J. Lee

News

Governor Andrew Cuomo claims that the key to a success-ful education system is a better teacher evaluation method. This claim is based on the fact that the new Common Core exams show only 30% of students passing, while in previous years, before the Common Core was put in place, approximately 80% of test takers SDVVHG&XRPR·VÀQJHUSRLQWLQJat teachers, as well as his new proposal which he backs with the possibility of an increase in the state’s educations spendings by $1.1 million or 4.8 percent, has been extremely controversial due to its forseen effects on teachers in public schools throughout the state.

According to Cuomo’s plans, about 50% of the evaluation of the “effectiveness” of teachers in the classrooms will consist of school observations (35% independent observers, 15% principal), and the other half will be dependent on students’ performance on state-conducted exams. Cur-rently, state exam results only make up 20% of a teacher’s rat-ing. This evaluation may appear to be more appropriate than what Cuomo is suggesting, but it still does not take into consideration that state exams do not directly correlate to teachers’ teaching abilities. A variety of other factors are involved, including the most important and often overlooked factor: the individual student’s

intellectual ability.What Cuomo’s proposal sug-

gests is that students are all of the same intellectual capability. Cuomo’s system is drawing a great deal of criticism for its unfair point of view, as teachers, students, and parents alike are arguing that effective teachers may be teaching slower learning children, students with disabilities, less motivated kids, etc. All of these factors may result in lower test scores, leading to an the teacher being misjudged. Applying this same logic, an area with more wealth and more motivated, faster learning kids can have teachers that are completely ineffective, but are rated “effective” due to the fact that the students score well independently on the state exam. ,QDGGLWLRQDIWHUÀYHFRQVHFX-

tive years of attaining a status deemed as “effective,” teachers have the option to apply for ten-ure. This increases the chances RI OHVV HIÀFLHQW WHDFKHUV EHLQJDEOH WR REWDLQEHQHÀWV VXFKDVjob protection, provided solely by the work of their more motivated students. On the other hand, objectively better teachers who work harder and truly deserve tenure might not receive it due to Cuomo’s new system. Oppos-ers of his ideas are arguing that by reinforcing their positions, having ineffective teachers in schools can and will harm the students’ education system. The students’ scores acting as 50% of the evaluation can immensely

skew the results and in turn, the status of their teacher.

Niskayuna is economically VWDEOHDQGLVÀOOHGZLWKQXPHURXVstudents with parents working for well known companies such as General Electric and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. There are many competent teachers in Niskayuna, but the students here are also generally motivated to do well in school and learn at a fast pace, esecially compared to the rest of the students in New York state. For that reason, Cuomo’s education reforms would not change much of the structure in this district. The same instruc-tors would teach because their students tend to do well on state exams. However, this could also go for ineffective teachers, and may eventually ruin the district, if ineffective education was not regulated.

One of the most speculated outcomes of the enforcement of the new plan is a possible change in the prioritization of the material taught to students. Protesters of the changes are

anxious that teachers may shift their focus away from their usual curriculum to the state exams, and spend more time in class preparing the students for the tests, rather than teaching other material they would previously have taught. Such change could not only threaten Niskayuna, but could potentially affect all public schools in the state.

This reform is currently con-tinuing to receive heavy scrutiny, for threatening to harm many teachers’ job security and the education of students. Good teachers could lose their jobs, and WKHDWWUDFWLRQWRHQWHUWKHÀHOGRIeducation would likely diminish, decreasing the overall quality of New York’s public education. The students wouldn’t be learning the necessary material, and ineffec-tive teachers would continue to instruct students. Due to the massive criticism the proposal has received, it is unlikely that the reform would pass. However, if it does, it could cause uproar from those in public education throughout the entire state.

head, sat down to answer a few

questions regarding her interim

position.

Natalia Romanzo: Could you

describe a typical day as as-

sistant principal at Niskayuna

High School?

Eva Jones: I help students

with different things they want to

do in the building. Many want to

fundraise for a club. I meet with

teachers; today, for example, I

talked with some of our teach-

ers about their curriculum for

courses they are teaching. I meet

with students who are having dif-

ÀFXOWLHVLQFODVVHV,DOVRHYDOXDWHteachers and observe classes;

earlier today, I visited the child

psychology class as they had

little kids come in. I’m about to

start working on different proj-

ects related to scheduling. Along

with the other administrators, I

make plans that have to do with

budgets.

NR: So overall it’s a big mix of

daily tasks?

EJ: Yes. A lot of meeting with

students and teachers and other

faculty members.

NR:What are the greatest chal-

lenges you have faced as assistant

principal?

EJ: I would say getting used to

the different duties. I don’t know

if you’ve heard, but I’ve also held

the job as the English Depart-

ment Director and Social Studies

Department Director.

NR: Do you still hold those

positions?

EJ::HOO,KDYHRIÀFLDOO\EHHQgranted absence from acting as

the English Department Director

and Social Studies Department

Director, but I still oversee these

departments. I work with the

teacher leaders in these depart-

ments to plan and been sure

things are running smoothly.

NR: So are you the permanent

DVVLVWDQW SULQFLSDO ÀOOLQJ LQ IRUMr. Treanor or is this an interim

position?

EJ: This is an interim position

so it’s temporary.

as assistant principal?

to talk about making changes.

NR: I just have one last ques-

tion. Have you worked at any

other high schools, and if so,

how does working in Niskayuna

High School differ from those

positions?

EJ: I’ve worked at two other

schools, but was not an admin-

istrator. I started my career at

a small rural school. I mean it

was very small; there were only

30 kids in the graduating class

and kindergarten through twelfth

grade were all in one building. I

was also an English teacher and

department chair at Norwich.

ÀIWHHQ\HDUVDJRDQGZDVDPD]HGat how the students and faculty

challenge us to get smarter. The

kids want great things and that

makes me want to work harder

too. In projects like the upcoming

week long fundraiser in which

students are making and donat-

ing items to a different charity

every day for one week, students

are in charge and the high school

comes together to work together.

We all challenge each other to get

better and that’s great.

NR: Thank you for answering

my questions. I appreciate the

time you took out of your busy

schedule and look forward to the

improvements you will make as

interim vice principal.

Eva Jones is looking forward to

the new challenges and opportu-

vice principal. Thus far, she has

been supporting the high school

in many departments and for that

the student and faulty bodies are

thankful. Although the position is

title holds. After answering these

questions it is now more clear as

to what changes are being made

in the high school faculty.

great admiration for Mr. Treanor.

I have worked with him for a long

time. He is a role model for fellow

students and administrators.

what I’ve learned from him and

take everything one day at a time.

NR: What’s currently on your

agenda?

EJ: Right now, I am focused

on getting to know teachers and

students who I don’t know too

well. I’m familiar with the social

studies and English teachers, but

I have had less interaction with

the rest of the faculty.

NR: Do you plan on making

any changes?

When the news of Brian Williams’s “mis-rememberance” of his experiences covering the war in Iraq broke, the American public was shocked, and with good reason. One of the most famous and trusted news anchors in America had lied for years about his KHOLFRSWHU EHLQJ XQGHU ÀUH LQ D ZDU ]RQH

When NBC News sent Williams to cover WKHZDULQ,UDTLQKHÁHZLQD&KLQRRNhelicopter, part of the US forces, to capture a unique view on the war. He originally reported that when he was on the ground, word came that the Chinook ahead of them had almost been shot down by a Rocket Propelled Gre-nade. Through the years, these events were misinterpreted by the media, as they were the ÀUVWWRZULWHWKDW:LOOLDPV·KHOLFRSWHUZDVWKHRQHXQGHUÀUHHPEHOOLVKLQJKLVVWRU\7KLVevolved to the point where Williams himself was telling sources that his helicopter had EHHQ XQGHU $. DQG 53* ÀUH ZKLFKcan pose a serious threat to an aircraft.

In late January of this year, Williams hon-ored a veteran at a New York Rangers game, but prefaced the segment by repeating his VWRU\DERXWEHLQJXQGHUÀUHRQWKH1LJKWO\News. In response to this, Williams stepped down from the anchor chair and took a self-induced leave of absence from the news. He also issued lengthy apologies to all who were involved on Facebook, and on his broadcast, saying that in the time since the events occurred, he began to “misremember” them. On February 9th, Williams was sus-pended for six months without pay by the President of NBC News, Deborah Turness.

Many think that this suspension was not harsh enough, however the American public may have been too quick to judge Williams. What Williams did was no doubt wrong and by lying to the nation, he disrespected the men and women who have valiantly served in the military. It is no joke to risk one’s life for this great nation, and by lying Williams took some of the meaning away from that risk.

That being said, many Americans watch news that frequently strays from facts. News networks such as Fox News skew essential facts yet market themselves as fair and bal-anced. Sean Hannity, one of the most famous Fox News anchors, called three couples onto his show to tell the viewers that Obamacare

was hurting them. After the show a reporter, Eric Stern, fact-checked the statements that Hannity and the couples made. He discovered that the couples on the show had been lying about Obamacare hurting them, and Hannity had also been using false “facts.” Stern then wrote and published an article which gained attention from many national news sources. In response to this Fox News did nothing, as did most of the American public. Hannity continued to host his show daily. School policy is behind the timesBy Noah Rohde

opiNioN

On August 13, 2014, the Board of Education reviewed the high school code of conduct for the 2014-2015 school year. While I am sure they performed this duty to the best of their ability, there are large sections of the code that are either outdated, not enforced, blatantly disrespected. One of the most glaring issues that comes to mind when I consider our student code is the school’s cell phone policy, which is not enforced or fol-lowed to even the slightest degree.

Section VII, Subsection F, Title 9, of the student code of conduct essentially says that phones are to be put away from the hours of 7:45am to 2:45pm except in four designated areas: outdoors, the New Cafe, the Old Cafe, and social commons. Students are not allowed to use phones while passing in the hallways and will be told by staff, it states, to pocket the electronic device. The staff hold the power to take phones away from multiple offenders.

Phones are also prohibited in all class rooms, the media center, the computer labs, or any other learn-ing environment. Furthermore, the code of conduct reads that, “Wireless communication devices with photographic capabilities are prohibited from being used for the purpose of taking photographs or recording images during the school day, unless proper autho-rization has been provided.” This means that not only Snapchats, but also any photos of notes taken on cellphones would be violations of the code of conduct. Seeing as none of these rules are followed or enforced, my personal recom-mendation is that the section be revised or struck from the code.

The problem that the school code addressed was based off of the assumption that cellphones KDYH QR EHQHÀFLDO SURSHUWLHVThat has since changed. Phones now have become more able, and they have begun to replace certain resources. Need to look up a word in another language? Pull out our phone. Need a calculator? Pull out

your phone. These uses and more are a clear indication that the code of conduct, at least the part on phones, needs to be changed.

Other than the usefulness of the devices, what has changed since the section was drafted and approved is that every child and their mother, father, siblings, and pig have a phone. With the ubiquitous nature of cell phones in our modern world, it is silly to WU\DQGVWHPWKLVÁRRGRISHUVRQDOcommunication devices. Parents now give their children a phone in ninth grade, if they haven’t already, because they feel it is a necessity. The code of conduct VKRXOGUHÁHFWWKLVEXWLWGRHVQRWIf the school actually enforced the current rule, many parents would complain to the administration that their kids need to have a phone on them at all times–“what if there were an emergency?”

Now, why does this matter and why should you care? It matters because if these rules about cell phones are not followed, or en-forced, why should other more im-

portant regulations be followed? When a rule is put in place, it is supposed to be listened to by all, no matter what. An agency that selectively enforces their policy undermines their own authority, one that is crucial to our learning experience. Why you should care? You should care because you at-tend this school, and by not striv-ing to improve and uphold a set of laws, you are failing at your civic duty. If you don’t do anything now, when there is a way to improve the rules, what will you do when the opportunity is no longer there?

All I ask for is for an updated version of the code of conduct or an enforcement of what codes we currently have. It is everyone’s right as a Niskayuna student to receive an education that is safe and orderly. As I see it now, the school does not have that, mak-ing the introduction to the high school code of conduct contra-dictory to its singular goal, this one standard that is to provide an acceptable facility of study to the population of Niskayuna.

Many people claim to know that Fox News is biased, yet it continues to have the highest cable news ratingsThe viewership of America has been gradually been shifting in the recent past in a situation where as many people rely on cable networks as they do on the nightly network news. The American public can-not criticize Williams from embel-lishing his stories and then turn around and continue to watch Fox News, which delivers them news with a clear slant from an-chors like Hannity and O’Reilly who don’t deliver the truth.

If the public continues to watch

and patronize cable news net-works, taking their words as the GHÀQLWLYHQHZVHYHQ LQ OLJKWRIevidence that those anchors twist the news and their personal expe-rience, we should not hold Brian Williams to a higher standard. The gap that placed network news above cable news must be shut, as studies show that cable news is beginning become the dominant television source for news. Brian Williams made an inexcusable mistake, but everyone deserves a second chance, especially if we as a people continue to watch cable news channels whose an-chors have been proven to lie to the public time and time again.

Art is cool. Really, really cool. But however often and however loudly I say that, no one can really tell what that means. Art is more than paint, pencils and markers, paper, canvases, and it’s more than violins, pointe shoes, and opera. You can never tell someone that what they’re doing isn’t art, because if they say it is, then it is. Who are you to tell them otherwise? Recognition of a work’s beauty, elegance, required skill, simplicity, functionality, etc. is all that’s required to classify a work as art, in my opinion, and if \RXJRRJOHWKHGHÀQLWLRQRIDUWWKHÀUVWUHVXOW\RXJHWis, “the expression or ap-plication of human creative skill and imagination”. That’s KDUGO\DGHÀQLWLRQ,W·VIDUWRRbroad to assign as a descrip-tion of any one activity, skill, RU GHÀQLWLYH FKDUDFWHULVWLFbecause “human creative skill and imagination” is limitless and ever expanding. That being said, everyone has their own art. For some it’s playing guitar, for oth-ers, constructing guitars, or maybe dancing to guitar music. Others still may even call computer programming and coding an art. I myself ex-press my art mainly through illustration and music.

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve loved to draw car-toons and comics. Over the past decade, my drawing style has changed, grown. Now my drawings are more detailed, more proportional with greater depth, and I am reaching the point where I am beginning to move away from a lifetime of cartoon, comic, or “manga” style artwork.

Art often has impacts on its creators, and often times, it’s for the better. I’ve found that the act of creating art, be it a drawing or music, in a way that takes form in an aesthetically or melodically pleasing way gives me a rush of joy, a creativity high. When I am practicing and I have in-spiration, it’s like the draw-LQJ MXVWÁRZVRQWKHSDJHand I don’t want to stop until I run out of ideas. Sometimes

that it helps her to connect with everyone around her, even those outside of the art community. Jonathan Rettig, singer, guitarist, percussion-ist, and martial artist loves his art because it frequently presents him new challenges to overcome, as well as virtu-DOO\LQÀQLWHSRVVLELOLWLHVIRUcreative expression.

Some people believe that nothing we create is origi-nal, but rather,“original” ideas are just subconscious interpretations of that which we’ve already experienced. The vast majority of my ar-tistic ability has come from imitation. I’ve watched cartoons all my life, read comics, and some of my greatest inspirations have been Bill Watterson’s comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, Jeff Smith’s graphic novel Bone, Michael Dante DiMartino and Brian Konietzko’s Avatar, the Last Airbender, and Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. If you were to look back at my sketchbooks from each of these eras of inspiration and compared their contents with each of these works, you would immediately notice parallels. In recent years, I’ve tried to expand beyond just comics, and have found myself inspired by other artworks, not necessarily of similar media. Even forms of sport and physical arts, like dancers, gymnasts, and cir-FXVSHUIRUPHUVKDYHDOOLQÁX-enced my artwork recently.

So there you have it, art is cool. And the exciting part is that art is changing for the better. I will not express my-self in the exact same ways I do now in ten years, and that doesn’t upset me at all. The possibilities for art in the future absolutely excites me.

Art’s beneficial effects

Dear readers, this week we featured some very talented S.T.E.A.M. stu-dents and we hope you enjoy reading their perspec-tives on science, technology, engi-neering, art, and math. S.T.E.A.M. is truly the future for our generation and we hope these articles will show you why.Love,The Editors

ideas are big visual concepts, other times they’re as simple as a different way to make a pen stroke. Art has also made me more aware, observant, and most importantly, appre-ciative of the world around me. Growing up illustrating the things that I saw helped me to see the beauty that is to be found in so much of that which surrounds us. Art has varying effects on different people however. Noah Rhode, who expresses his art through pattern and abstract media, says that art has made him a better person, that what-ever his state of emotion, art helps him to think and to process his thoughts and feel-ings. Beca Piasick, a student photographer, claims that her art is like therapy, and
