Microbial MatsA Marine Easy Clean product

In any water environment such as rivers, lakes, ponds and aquariums it’s all about the microscopic bugs as they clean water by the nitrification and de nitrification process. Good bug life means good water. Now there are different bugs that handle the different stages of the nitrification process.

The Water Cleanser blocks become the bugs’ home. In that home we provide all the trace elements (vitamins) required for all the different bugs to multiply and do their job, which is to keep the water clean and healthy.

In Aquariums there are biological filters. In these systems you place filter medium down for the bugs to live on; an example of a medium is bio-balls, these are good and you still use them in conjunction with the Water Cleanser blocks, but the bio-balls don’t have the trace elements required to keep the bugs multiplying and healthy. The biggest factor is the holding density. The Water Cleanser blocks hold 10,000 times more bugs per square centimeter than any other medium, thus creating a visible microbial mat. A microbial mat is a layer of bacteria that can be seen by the naked eye.

Microbial Mats are intense water cleaners, new bugs do the first stage of the nitrification process whilst older mats have the bugs that do the final stages of the de nitrification process.. Therefore for the best results replace The Water Cleanser Block every 10 weeks, but leave the old block in for a further 2 weeks to let the bugs migrate to the new block and establish new colonies. This maintains the new bugs for the first stage of the nitrification process. Leaving one or more old Water Cleanser blocks in the tank will speed up the establishment process of the new bugs while keeping the levels of older bugs, which do the final stages of the nitrification process.

On The Water Cleanser blocks in the photo below, the microbial mats are so intense you can see them on the blocks; the different colours represent different colonies of bugs during the different stages of the nitrification process. In this case we placed one 50 g block in each of the three filter stages in the one 600 litre tank. It is recommended to put a new 100g block in every 10 weeks and maintain 3 old 50g Water Cleanser blocks.

A microbial mat is a multi-layered sheet of microorganisms. Microbial mats are the earliest form of life on Earth and have been the most important members and maintainers of the planet’s ecosystems. Microbial mats began to produce the atmosphere we know today, in which free oxygen is a vital component. Because of microbial mats’ ability to use almost any waste as “food”, they are natures own natural way of performing water treatment and cleaning up pollution without the side effects

that occur from chemical treatment.

How the Water Cleanser WorksIncludes study results from Curtain University

Archaea microbes and certain Bacillus Spp. bacteria consume hydrocarbons, and this is how they clean the water.

Hydrocarbons are the oldest form of organic waste which we know as paraffinic crude oil a precursor of fuel used in our cars. Further, we all use olive oil and vegetable oil which are young organic hydrocarbons too.

Well! All organic material produces a percentage of organic hydrocarbons which has multiple uses. Nature uses these natural oils as a food souse for many things as well, but the most important for The Water Cleanser is the organic oils in conjunction with phosphates that gives “nutritious” value to algae blooms and disease causing bacteria.

The Wax Block itselfThe wax block itself has been specially formulated. If you look at the wax block under a powerful microscope, it is full with millions of microscopic capillaries that progress from one end through to the other, these microscopic capillaries provide the ultimate home for all the required microbes that maintain the health of water. The wax block itself is a powerful biological filter media which also provides the required trace elements for all microbes to thrive and function to their optimal levels.

How does this process control Algal Blooms Algal blooms are mostly fed by the breakdown of organic waste in water e.g. fish poo, excess food not been consumed by fish or anything that has died in that water system. Now in the natural nitrification process by Nitrosomonas spp bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite and then Nitrobacter spp bacteria convert nitrites into nitrate. Now the Achaean microbes and Bacillus oil eating bacteria remove the organic oils which phosphate uses, the phosphate is now biologically unavailable to be a nutritious food source for algae. Hence, removing organic oil compound makes the phosphate harmless and provides no nutrition for algae. This is why we still find phosphate present in the water but it is now like us eating cardboard, with no nutritional value.

Why does this process lower diseases and allow higher stocking densitiesThe organic oils that are produced in the nitrification process have the highest nutritional value to algae and disease causing bacteria so the overall removal of organic oils from this process provides us with the water that can sustain higher stocking densities of fish with minimal chances of disease outbreaks.

Why can’t Archaea microbes and Bacillus oil eating bacteria do this without “The Water Cleanser”Whilst Archaea microbes and Bacillus Spp. bacteria can consume organic oils, organic oils in themselves do not have the right trace elements for these particular microbes and bacteria to thrive and multiply. The Water Cleanser has been specially developed and designed to provide these groups of microbes and bacteria with these special trace elements that allows them to multiply exponentially whilst providing them the perfect home to function.

Water Colour Changes as the Archaea Microbes and Bacillus Spp bacteria become the dominant pathway in lakes and pondsThe change from green to brown of the water means that The Water Cleanser is working because the Archaea microbes and Bacillus Spp bacteria have grown to very large numbers in order to consume the excess organic waste. As the waste is brought under control their numbers naturally lower and the water clears.

After adding The Water Cleanser blocks, the Archaea Microbes and Bacillus Spp bacteria quickly multiply to become the dominant species over the harmful bacteria and algae. The cleaning of the water can take up to 4 weeks and then they take time to do their job which can be another 6 weeks till the water clears.

When the Archaea microbes and Bacillus Spp. bacteria multiply rapidly and populate themselves, the system will abruptly transit from a green, algae ridden water system to brown water as the Archaea Microbes and Bacillus Spp bacteria do their job, the system then turns to clear water. This occurs once the Archaea Microbes and Bacillus Spp bacteria are in control of the organic waste.

Remember, if outside influences such as fertilisers continue to enter the water, algae can become more dominant and the water will remain a light brown colour. The activity of the Archaea microbes and Bacillus Spp bacteria, as a result of the introduction of The Water Cleanser, will still result in healthy water levels with a good level of dissolved oxygen which is essential for a healthy system.

Browning water in AquariaBrowning of water in aquaria is caused when there is too much organic waste, which usually occurs due to over feeding. The microbes and bacteria must increase in numbers to clear the water; these large numbers of microbes and bacteria will initially give a brown look to the water. By lowering the feeding amounts as in this chart, the water will clear again.

The Water Cleanser is all about helping beneficial bacteria and microbes that are in the environment to do the nitrification process better. Over 99% of all bacteria and microbes in the environment are beneficial to the environment in some manner or form; we look at them doing a bad job only because they have been overwhelmed by the quantity of work they have to do in extreme situations. Because of this man has developed ways of killing off bacteria and microbial life believing it will be beneficial to the environment.

The fact of the matter, killing off bacteria and microbial life just causes ongoing problems in the future as the nitrification process has been stalled and toxic waste accumulates which eventually starts causing toxic algal blooms and disease.

So the correct solution is to assist the bacteria and microbes in times of need and this is where The Water Cleanser plays the biggest part by providing those critical trace elements and a home for the bacteria and microbes so they can get the nitrification process working at its full strength whilst lowering their BOD and COD by 50% throw this process.

Soil Oxygenation

Soil oxygenation in the environment is a critical part of nature been able to maintain the health of water system; basically it stops the natural toxic dead zone from polluting the waterways.

Deoxygenation of surface soil generally occurs when a waterway is overwhelmed with excess organic waste and the natural bacteria doing the nitrification process require more oxygen than is available in the water system, so they suck the oxygen from the soils which then starts a chain reaction of unhealthy water as the dead zone soil is now polluting the waterway as well, which leaves us with large algal blooms and disease-causing bacteria.

How does the water cleanser oxygenate surface soilThe Water Cleanser does not directly put oxygen into the soil, but it does lower the BOD and COD of the nitrification process by 50% whilst increasing the conductivity by 100%. This intern allows oxygen naturally to come back into the water system and the excess oxygen then is taken up by the soils, which stops the pollution from the dead zone soil. This then begins the full recovery of the water system.

One major thing noticed during trials and projects is the oxygenation of the surface soils in aquariums. This has major implications as in all rivers and bays where it is the top oxygenated soil that protects the health of the water system as a small amount of oxygenated soil stops toxins from the dead zone soil from entering the water body.

Trials using the Water Cleanser Image 1 [pictured right]: Shows a tank after 3 years with no water replacement, no aeration and no filtration. Within this time we poured offal into this tank which should have killed everything; however 6 weeks later when it cleared up there were 20 more baby fish in the tank.

You can see clearly the toxic dead zone, and then above it you have the oxygenated soil which is topping all of the natural toxins from below from polluting the water.

Image 2 [pictured right]: Shows an aerated and filtered tank with no water replacement in 12 months. This tank once again shows clearly the toxic dead zone and then a good 2cm of oxygenated soil keeping the water clean.

Trials in canals over 12 months have caused dramatic improvement in the health of the canal system. When the project was started on low tides the canal smelt from the rotten black mud. 10kg of WC was placed every 50 metres throughout the canal. Six months later the Archaea microbes had oxygenated the top 1cm of the soil, shown on a low tide as a clean light brown layer with no smell.

Conclusion of Projects and TestingThe Water Cleanser is completely safe, with the product having been used initially in fresh and salt water aquarium tanks and during eleven years of trials no harm was caused to any fish, coral, sponges, crustaceans or frogs. It has been granted APVMA approval in 2009 and 2011 as a non-chemical product as it does not destroy, stupefy, repel or inhibit the feeding of algae or aquatic life and the product does not leach any trace elements into the water

Reusing Pond Water after The Water Cleanser has lowered the phosphorus

Free carbon dioxide is a waste product from healthy microbial activity. To have it rise shows how good The Water Cleanser is at maintaining good water quality. Marin Easy Clean recommends that 4 other tests should be considered in order to see the full benefit of The Water Cleanser:• Conductivity • Chemical oxygen

Demand• Temperature Electrical Conductivity is used as a measurement of Total Dissolved SolidsAll testing was conducted for the Waikato Raupatu River Trust through Water Cleanser NZ Limited, the agent in New Zealand.

As stated by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NZ) one of the two key contaminants to lakes and river systems is disolved reactive phosphorus. The tests undertaken by Marine Easy Clean have clearly shown that through the use of The Water Cleanser, a 66% reduction of dissolved reactive phosphorus been achieved in dairy effluent ponds. The water from these ponds is then sprayed onto paddocks. The run off then ends up in lakes and rivers systems. This massive reduction in dissolved reactive phosphorus will only benefit the future health of all ponds and lakes adjacent to dairy effluent systems.

The test results also show that in this intense waste environment The Water Cleanser needs to be replaced every 10 to 12 weeks, with a two week overlap of product rotation to maintain constant water conditioning.

String Algae ProblemFull of string weed causing an ugly look and bad odour which

was upsetting the residents.


The ProblemThe City of Gosnells Cannar Lake design does not allow for any natural eco-system to evolve, it is basically a large swimming pool without the benefits of a filtering system or chemicals.

The ApplicationThe lake is approximately 60m x 40m x 1m with a contributing small lake only 4m x 2m. The lake is feed by stormwater and has an aeration (fountain) system. We placed 4 x 5kg blocks in each corner and 1 x 5kg block near the aeration fountain. Also 1 x 1kg block was placed in the small contributing lake. Total 26kg5kg block, tied to a household brick to sink the product.

Conslusion After 12 Weeks: The water is a greenish colour as the weeds have gone to mush at the bottom of the lake. It is important to understand that a lake needs to be murky to a certain level. Weed and algae requires sunlight to grow, murky water blocks sunlight. Part of the healing process is for the water to go green then brown then brown/blue.After 20 Weeks: The lake looks fabulous in comparison to ugly lake of 20 weeks earlier. The greenness has completely gone from the water and is now a brown colour, reflecting the colour of the bottom of the lake. The water is clearing and you can see the bottom.Ongoing: The lake has almost completely remediated and with ongoing use of The Water Cleanser the lake should continue to be relatively algae free. We believe as the microbes eat more of the organic waste on the bottom of the lake the water will continue clearing

The Water Cleanser has been used on trial in Lake 5 since November 2012.

This trial was originally to eradicate the use of blue die which makes the lakes look nice and starves the algae of sunlight, but the long term environmental impact is unknown, is time consuming to apply, and renders the user blue from head to toe. Whilst conducting our trial, the park, which is water tested by the local authorities, was given a high e coli reading in some of its lakes.


As cam be seem by the above table, the results have been astounding.

The council has been provided the test results and they are over the moon as are the owners. The Water Cleanser is now being used on the other lakes.

Bring back the birds Eliminating the odour and clarifying the water in the City of Mandurah lake system

The Newport lakes are 200m apart both were toxic, dirty with odour issues and no wildlife. The City of Mandurah had tried several different applications but with no positive results.


The SolutionWe treated only one of the lakes initially for comparison reasons, floating 18kg Industrial grade Water Cleanser blocks into the 200m2 lakes (well away from the edge), and waited for 6 months.

The ResultAfter approximately 6 months, there was a noticable improvement in the clarity of water, no odour and already a return of marine and wildlife.The Water Cleanser had also re-oxygenated the surface soil resulting in the return of healthy trees, grasses and plants around the lake.

TestimonialWith the state of the degraded lakes in our Council and all of the ineffective solutions we had tried it was decided to trial this new exiting product.

Within a week of treatment the birds returned and over a six month trial all plant life has come back to full health with no more algae blooms or bad smells.

With the simplicity of application for our staff and low cost of the product we are now treating 32 lakes in the City of Mandurah.

Removing the Stink Using The Water Cleanser to clean Sewerage Ponds

The client came to us with the problem of their Sewerage Ponds being extremely smelly and dirty. Local

residents were complaining to the Shire that in certain wind conditions the smell of sewerage emitting from the ponds was blowing right through town and ran the risk of causing a down turn in tourist activity.

The TestInitially a test was run with Sewage Water being placed in a controlled environment with approximately 400g of The Water Cleanser added to 40L of sewage water. Aeration was provided to all the tanks during the test.By day 29 the water was as clear as drinking water, the waste having settled to the bottom of the tanks as hard flakes.

The SolutionThe blocks were thrown into the water away from the edge and spaced evenly around the ponds. In this case 4 blocks were used (5kg per pond).

The ResultAfter 25 days, 20kg of the water cleanser has made a dramatic difference to the quality of the water. The overflow pond was completely clear (for the first time ever). The Residents were happy that the Sewerage ponds no longer had a foul smell.

Golf Course LakeToxic, green water with koi struggling for survival.


The ProblemThis lake was brought to our attention by a pump specialist who had been working with the golf course to fix this lake. The aeration system was not remediating the lake and the water was so toxic that the aeration system was actually spewing green water. Even with bad water this is not a common phenomenon.

The ResultAfter 7 weeks the lake was reading a pH level of 9, this pH is extremely high; recommended levels should be between 7-8. High pH can be a caustic acid issue, suggesting an influx of lime. As this lake is feed by stormwater we surmise that local building practise (bricklayers washing cement and lime down the drains) could be the issue also the use of fertilisers could be a contributing factor.As the lake was in such a bad way we double dosed the lake with 12 kilograms of The Water Cleanser.Our product in such a contaminated environment could take 2-3 months to gain results and at 7 weeks with only subtle improvements and the pH at dangerous levels we recommended an influx of fresh water into the system, 10 000 litres was added. After a further two weeks the pH had dropped to7.8. We continued to monitor this lake to see if the pH rose again.Week 11 has seen the pH steady around the 7-7.5 mark and the fish are swimming below the surface and the water is staring to improve in clarity.The water has gone from the pea green to a dirty brown indicating the product was working well, however the storm rain water quality will always affect the quality of the water and the lake will need continuous monitoring and use of The Water Cleanser.Fertiliser run off from the fairways can be a contributing factor to poor water quality. We recommended a review of their fairway management policies to reduce the usage of fertiliser.

Saving Farm Water Eliminating Algal Bloom and Cleaning the Farm Dam to allow the livestock to Drink

The client came to us with the problem that their sheep in this paddock would not go near the dam. The same water was being run up to the residence for general use in cleaning and flushing the toilet.

The Famer was at a total loss how to remove the large algae bloom, which was toxic and extremely smelly.


The SolutionWe floated 2 of the 1kg Industrial grade Water Cleanser blocks into the dam, and waited for a result.

The ResultAfter approximately 8 weeks, just 2kg of the Water Cleanser has made a dramatic difference to the quality of the water. The algae bloom has disappeared, and the sheep have returned to drinking at the dam, which can be seen in the image showing they have grazed the grass back to the waters edge.The quality of life has also been returned inside the house to the Farmer and his family, with the simple joy of being able to see the bottom of their toilet for the first time.

Other Uses on the FarmSeptic Tanks The Water Cleanser is perfect for septic tanks, just apply a 1kg block of industrial grade into each tank. This will reduce odour and the amount of organic waste in the tanks.

AIM

The aim of the research project was to evaluate the efficacy of ‘Water Cleanser’ (called

the PRODUCT), marketed by The Marine Easy Clean Pty Ltd on the growth performance

and the water quality of the cultured goldfish (Carassius auratus).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A laboratory based trial under semi-controlled environmental conditions was

carried out for 14 weeks with commercial stocking densities (9 fish/tank) of goldfish

(Carassius auratus) in 15 recirculating glass aquaria. Initially, for 12 weeks, three

treatments were replicated 5 times in the randomised design. These three treatments

were (i) fish tank attached to standard biological filters, containing standard biological

filter medium (control), (ii) fish tanks attached to the biological filters containing an

equal volume of the product and the standard biological filter medium, without

changing the total volume of the filter medium and (iii) fish tanks attached to the

biological filter where all medium was replaced by the product only. Two weeks before

the commencement of the trial, another treatment was introduced where fish tanks

were without any filtration system. The growth parameters tested were the survival,

growth rates, total fish biomass and biomass increments of the fish. The water quality

parameters tested were pH, nitrogen metabolites and phosphorus in all the

experimental tanks. The parameters were analysed using One way ANOVA for significant

differences (p<0.05) in SPSS version 21.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The water quality parameters in all fish tanks were within acceptable ranges and

goldfish survival was high. The product improved the survival of the goldfish (Fig. 1.) .

The product efficiently removed the nitrogen metabolites from the gold fish tanks,

including nitrates (Fig. 2.). These results demonstrated that the Water Cleanser was an

effective bioremediation product that could be used as an alternative to normal bio

filters and its use improves the survival and water quality of the culture environment.

The product also increased the biological carrying capacity of the fish by approximately

31%.
