The Waterline

Just yesterday PLM treated the lakes. One of our board members works closely with them to assure that they do the best job possible for our members. We also do a large fish plant every year that one of our board members oversees. We put on a pancake breakfast and Association dinner every year, golf outing, the Waterline Newsletter, the list goes on and on. The Association has monthly meetings that everyone is informed of and invited to but we see very few (a handful) from the Woodbeck Chain of Lakes community who attend. I understand that in today’s society everyone is busy with work and family, but if you could take an hour or two out of your month to attend a meeting and help grow the Woodbeck Chain of Lakes “family”, just think of the endless possibilities we could accomplish. It is my hope that we will begin to see many new faces, make new friendships and maybe even acquire individuals who would be willing to help out or even become a board member. I would like to personally thank the Association board members (who are all volunteers) who work diligently to improve our Woodbeck Chain of Lakes community and the beautiful lakes we have the privilege of enjoying. See you on the water my friends! Tom “Uncle Tom” Stressman WCLA President https://www.facebook.com/Woodbeck-Chain-of-Lakes-Association-133309000037956/?fref=ts

“FIVE LAKES – ONE COMMUNITY” www.woodbeckchainoflakes.com

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT… Greetings Everyone! I recently heard someone say “the only reason to join the association is to get the boat launch code”. I sincerely hope that most people don’t think that way. Being a member of the Association brings so much more to our Woodbeck Chain of Lakes community. Yes we do keep access to our lakes to a minimum, but being an association member also helps to improve the quality of the lakes that we enjoy 365 days a year.

Thank you Volunteers! Our annual pancake breakfast this year was held at Camp Greenwood on Saturday, June 4. Thanks so much to the WCLA board members that helped cook up a storm at the WCLA pancake breakfast at Camp Greenwood serving 132 participants! Jim Bates shared an update on Camp Greenwood and this year we had a Kent County Sheriff officer speak and answer many questions. The resource table was full of wonderful information and brochures from the Michigan Lakes and Streams Convention. Gloria Gibson had all our WCLA t-shirts and sweatshirts available for sale and sold over $200 worth of shirts. Great day to share breakfast with everyone and seeing that we all survived the winter just fine. Thanks again everyone for helping and making this possible.

WELCOME TO WOODBECK CHAIN OF LAKES! We are so lucky to live on our beautiful Woodbeck Chain of Lakes, our own peace of paradise and have many people wanting to live here too… wanting to join our WCLA community, wanting to see our majestic sunrises and sunsets, wanting to swim, fish, boating, kayaking, ice skating, ice fishing, cross country skiing, meeting great people and enjoying many more activities… with that said, we are happy to introduce a few new homeowners who are now enjoying our WCLA community. Please join us in welcoming them to our lakes! Welcome Cory & Jan DeMint, Woodbeck Lake We are the DeMint's from Ada. Cory, Jana, Ira, Ruby and Frances. I, Cory, own restaurants in Grand Rapids and have turned our cottage into a year round house with hopes of enjoying some winter activity on the lakes as well! We look forward to meeting some of you and being outdoors. Our children love friends to play with so please feel free to come and introduce yourself! Welcome Michael & Danell Merren Horseshoe Lake Michael and Danell Merren grew up in Greenville and currently live in Rockford, where their daughters Micah, Kaiah and Maya all attend the district's Spanish Immersion K-12 Program (grades ninth, eight & fourth). Micah is in the Mackinac Island Honor Scouts and a local troop, and Kaiah and Maya are both active in Girl Scouts as well. They are all very active in Odyssey of the Mind and plays in the Rockford area. Having this home on the lake provides them with an opportunity to meet with and host family and friends as they all return 'home' from the diaspora. Michael is the Executive Director of The Pantry, a non-profit in Kentwood and Danell is a Mortgage Underwriter at Lake Michigan Credit Union, her office is also in Kentwood. We chose to buy on the chain of lakes because we'd been dreaming about a place on water for some time, and it was the perfect location- our dear friends, Kirk and Liana Maxon, live just a few houses down, my brother’s in-laws live on Half Mile, and our friend Mike King’s parents have a summer place on Banks Lake. We knew that we’d always know lots of people around, and that’s what we’ve always loved about Greenville!

Welcome Mark & Pamela Bouwer Thomas Lake We don't feel like newcomers. We purchased the cottage from Pam's parents, Vern and Linda DeWeerd. Our family has been on Thomas Lake since 1989. We have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, and many happy family times on the lake. Our home is in Grand Rapids. Mark is currently employed at Advanced Waterfront Equipment. Pam is currently employed at Spectrum Health as a recovery room nurse. They have two married children who live in Grand Rapids, also. Daughter Amanda married to Brett and son Andrew married to Melissa. We love to golf, play tennis, spend time with friends, and enjoy the lake. We are looking forward to getting to know the neighbors on the lake. Thanks for making us feel welcome and creating the community newsletter.

Welcome Sara Lemmerman Thomas Lake I am very happy with the little cottage on Hilltop because it is close to my children and grandchildren. We can visit more frequently because I am only 15 minutes away from them instead of an hour. My husband and I retired from our business in Grand Rapids due to his illness with cancer. We moved to Fremont Lake and spent 10 wonderful years in the community of Fremont, MI. We continued to do business from our home and met many interesting people in Fremont. After he passed in 2010, I put the home up for sale and didn't get a reasonable offer until 2015. Then I made the decision to have a summer place on a smaller lake which seems to be perfect for me. It is a big responsibility to maintain a property and the least amount of effort works well. I'm looking forward to meeting more neighbors and friends in the area. My biggest helper is my son Brett who works in Greenville. He looks after things for me while I get out of the cold and spend the winters in Florida. My hobbies are fly fishing, biking, hiking, boating, and tennis. It is my goal to keep physically fit as long as my body will allow me to be active. The new home on the chain of lakes provides me with these sports. Also, it would be helpful to me if you would mention a free boat lift to anyone who would be willing to remove it from my dock. It is an older lift that the former owners had for their jet ski Free boat lift for jet ski if you are willing to remove – Call Sara at 616-260-2289

Welcome Tim & Kristy Lind Horseshoe Lake Tim grew up in Clarksville, MI and graduated from Davenport University. He is a licensed builder and also works for Enerco Corporation. Kristie grew up in Howell, MI and graduated from GVSU. We have 3 beautiful children Emily, 7, Grace, 5, and Brooke, 3. We are currently renting a house on Banks Lake and intend to stay on the chain of lakes until our home is completed on Horseshoe Lake. We chose this area because we believe it is one of the hidden treasures Michigan has to offer. We also have many friends that either live or visit these chain of lakes. We are looking forward to create many more wonderful memories on the chain of lakes!

Boat Launch Gate Code Change Schedule

Changes to the gate codes are scheduled for "around" April 1st, June 1st, July 1st and August 1st.... After the August 1st gate code change takes place we will leave the code the same until the following April 1st. This will be the schedule for both the Kindy launch and Camp Concordia launch. We say the change to the gate codes happens "around" a date because it may get changed a day or so after that date just depending on the persons schedule. So if you are launching a boat around these dates, use the new code, but if that doesn't work try the old code.

Reminder…if you are a paid member

contact your lake rep for the latest code

Reminder… if you wish to receive all issues of the Waterline Newsletter via email and want to stop receiving a hard black & white copy via mail, email Gloria Gibson at [email protected] – you will then be able to view all the color of these photos on line and help protect the environment by going green.

Our Deepest Sympathy We are sad to report the passing of two great individuals who recently left us: Mary J. Malling, 80, passed away March 25, 2016, wife of Gerald Malling, Half Mile Lake Karen Kay (Zahm) Blonshine, 67, of Greenville, died June 13, 2016,wife of Gerald Blonshine, Horseshoe Lake

Loons on Woodbeck Lake A pair of loons that have been seen and/or the most wonderful thing heard on our lakes. Easily disturbed and stressed, adult common loons may desert their nest if approached too closely by a person, boat or other water vehicle, or wake from such a vehicle.

MISSION STATEMENT The WCLA will promote the preservation of lake/water quality, provide education about boat safety & etiquette and initiate social activities to promote community friendships and interaction. It will encourage membership and participation in the Association and will facilitate a sense of community amongst riparian property owners.

As mentioned in todays Letter from the President “the only reason to join the Association is to get the launch code”, we thought it be a good idea to refresh everybody’s memory of what our Association does so here are just a few things for our new homeowners and a reminder to our WCLA community:

Here’s how the WCLA operates:

• In late Auguest, Lake Reps from each of the five lakes are elected by the general membership at the annual meeting to serve on the Board of Directors for the next fiscal year (Sept thru Aug). At the following Board meeting, officers for the Association are elected by and from the newly elected Lake Reps: Officers are President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

• Members of the Board work with volunteers from the general membership on various committees that meet to implement the purpose of the Association as mention in the Mission Statement above.

• The Association maintains a private boat launch on Kindy Rd at the Woodbeck/Horseshoe channel and has a working relationship with Camp Concordia for members to use their boat launch on Half Mile Lake. There are no public boat

launches on the five lakes so membership in the WCLA provides convenient boat access to the lakes.

• The Association publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Waterline to inform members of the WCLA activities. Email communication on important Association events are also made to members who have supplied the Association with their email address.

• The Association plants fish every year – primarily Walleye – to provide quality fishing for members

• BOTTOM LINE: Membership in the WCLA (only $35 a year) is a great investment and all lakefront and lake access owners are encouraged to join!

Many of our volunteers have served as lake representatives for many, many years and we thank them for their unconditional service. We are always looking for “new blood”, new volunteers to share their experience, new volunteers to give the Association a new perspective, and new volunteers to bring new and fresh ideas! If you would like to volunteer, please contact any board member or lake representative. You can find the latest updated list in this issue of the Waterline.

The Woodbeck Chain-of-Lakes Association (WCLA) has a special agreement with Camp Concordia in order for members to get their boats in and out of the lakes. CC does NOT get paid for WCLA use of its private land. It is offered as a neighborly gesture to WCLA paid members.

In respect for the property of Camp Concordia, to ensure the safety of the children on site during the times of organized events, and to continue our good relationship; the Camp Concordia Board of Directors asks that the members of the WCLA kindly follow these guidelines for the use of the boat launch in in 2016.
