TRANSCRIPT

Back to School

I’m a grandmother of 43 grandchil-dren and I still have nightmares ofroller skating to school barefooted orbeing late for class only to find a popquiz delivered in the one class I hadn’tstudied for. I don’t know where thetime flies, but here it is time to resched-ule the calendar to comply with schoolactivities again. And it’s time for back-to-school shopping.

The flip-flops will be replaced by newtennis shoes and the halter tops andswimsuites will have to take place in theback of the drawer to make room for thenew designer tops. I thought I wasthrough with the responsibility of schoolshopping. But, alas, the grandchildrenneed supplies, too. So off we go...

And what better way isthere to celebrate the endof Summer than to planthat one special last week-end outing with the fami-ly. This issue pays tributeto those events that will

help us put a stamp of approval on sum-mer success.

Do you like to bike, run or evenwalk? Then, you need to try out thePumpkinvine Nature Trail inNorthern Indiana. The trail is locat-ed in Elkhart County on an aban-doned railroad corridor that datesback to 1888. Passenger trains onceran along this same route and latermail service well into the 1900s. Thetrail changed hands a few timesbefore finally being silent in 1980.

Friends of the PumpkinvineNature Trail purchased the corridorin 1993 and have worked diligentlyto get the trail up and running to itscurrent state. And their hard workhas paid off. Today, the 16.5 miletrail runs through Goshen,Middlebury and Shipshewana andshowcases some of the best ofNorthern Indiana. While on theirtrail you can view seven wooden-trestle bridges, two Amish schools,thirty-one species of wildflower andif you look closely even a camel

farm!

If don’t have a bike or don’t carryit with you on trips, you can rentbikes at one of three locations – oneeven being right off the trail head.

In total, the Pumpkinvine NatureTrail is comprised of three trailsconnecting Elkhart, Goshen,Middlebury and Shipshewana withtotal distance of 25 miles. And notthat I’m looking for an excuse, butthat is certainly enough to justify aslice of pie at the Essenhaus –which happens to be right on theway. :)

Before you go, be sure and visitthe Pumpkinvine Nature Trail’swebsite. Construction continues tomake the trail bigger and better andyou’ll want to know of the latestdevelopments for you to enjoy.

The weather is nice. The trails arethere. What are you waiting for?
