family of the weekRoger, Colleen, Emma and Jason Wentzel
Your family...We are the Wentzel family - Roger, Colleen, Emma (12) and Jason (9). We also have two English Pointer dogs who love keeping the children company in the garden whilst keeping an eye out for the local hadadas. Roger is the Store Development GM for Cashbuild and Colleen is a grade R teacher at Roosevelt Park Preprimary. Emma and Jason both attend Blairgowrie Primary, as did Roger. He grew up in the area and we now live in Linden. Roger went to high school at Parktown Boys and Colleen went to Parktown Girls, we met through mutual school friends. We enjoy sport, spending time at the Vaal dam sailing and being with family and friends.
Your connection to St Columba's...Roger’s family has been a part of St Columba’s, beginning with his grandparents who lived in Lurgan Road, since the 1960’s. Roger was baptized into the church in 1976. Colleen grew up with parents who were very involved in their Anglican church. We were married by Chunky and both Emma and Jason were baptized by him as well. We feel a strong connection to St Columba’s and believe that being part of this church provides a sense of community and builds our faith for our children to guide them as they grow up.
Your situation during lockdown...
We have found ourselves in a very fortunate position during lockdown with a garden and long panhandle driveway four our children to ride their bikes and be outside. We are even managing to run a 2km course around our property. We are blessed to continue to work from home, adjusting to zoom meetings and classes and managing to provide our children with a balanced day of school work and play. We are lucky that we will be able to look back on this time with happy memories of riding bikes, playing board games, pitching tents, picnics, virtual tea time sessions with grandparents and lots and lots of baking!
Any insights gained during this period...One thing lockdown has been for us is that positive nudge into learning new skills. From technological skills, that were once avoided, to improving our own primary school Maths skills as we attempt to help our children with grade 4 and 7 activities - both our Maths teachers would be proud! We have also learnt the art of bartering: exchanging a bottle of Roger’s whisky for cricket coaching sessions when lockdown is over. Our street has a constant supply of avocadoes being passed along, as a few of us have trees in our garden bearing an abundance of fruit. The group chat will ping with someone saying that they have placed a box full of avos for anyone who would like to help themselves. When we ride our bikes, go for a jog or walk around our suburb we feel a renewed sense of community as people’s eyes shine brightly with a cheerful gesture or a muffled “good morning” through their mask. For many lockdown must be a difficult and challenging time, so these small but meaningful acts of kindness remind us of our blessings. Sending prayers of positivity, good health and love.
