Well, April is as fi ckle as ever. We can have sunshine and 70 degrees or 30 degrees and snow. Experienced gardeners are used to the unruly nature of April weather and have learned to adapt. I don’t mind the cool weather since it will hold things back a bit. Root growth occurs when soil temperatures are low and, when it fi nally does warm up, the plants will have a good, strong root system and they’ll explode into growth with plenty of moisture available. A lot of us have managed to use the warm moments to get our beds cleaned out and our lawns raked. I fi nd that these cooler days are a great time to work outside since you don’t get overheated and there aren’t any pesky mosquitoes to drive you crazy.
Someone recently asked me why there aren’t any products that had lawn food, crabgrass preventer and weed killer in one bag. The gentleman thought this would be a great idea since it would save a lot of time. His question reminded me that there is a lot of confusion about the differences between weed killer and crabgrass preventer. Let me try to straighten this out.
Crabgrass, unlike most lawn weeds, grows from seed that the mother plant pro-duced the previous summer. The mother plant dies completely over the winter never to be seen again. In early spring (starting about now) the seed germinate and start to grow. Crab-grass preventer is an agent that dissolves and forms a coating on the surface of the soil. ANY seeds that try to sprout and push a root through that barrier are killed. The best way to time you crabgrass preventer application is to keep an eye on a forsythia bush that is growing in your yard or neighborhood. You MUST have your crabgrass preventer applied before the fl owers have completely fallen off the forsythia. It is a convenient coincidence that crabgrass seeds germinate at the same time that forsythias are fl owering. Spring weather can be fi ckle but, if you use the forsythia as your clock, your crabgrass preventer will always go on at the right time. Remember that crabgrass preventer forms a thin fi lm on the surface of the soil so make sure that all your raking is done before you apply crabgrass preventer. If you rake afterward, you will scratch up the barrier and crabgrass will be able to grow.
Dandelions, plantain and other lawn weeds are perennial plants. They come up from a root system that was established the year before and they survive the winter. Because they are coming up from roots not down from seeds, they are immune to the effects of crab-grass preventer.
Lawn weed killers do not prevent weeds, they kill existing weeds. Weed killers (liquid or granular) are basically plant growth hormones that, when applied at the proper time, cause the weed to die from the shock that occurs when the weed tries to grow faster that it is able to. Sort of like an overdose of stimulants. If weed killers are applied too early in the season (when nigh time temperature are below 50 degrees) they will not kill the weeds. During the cool days and nights of early spring, the weeds are not growing rapidly enough for the growth hormone to cause the level of shock necessary to kill the weed. Every June people complain that the weed killer they used is “no good” or “doesn’t work”. The real reason it didn’t work is because it was applied WAY too early. Sure, you can look out in the yard and see those buggars out there growing but it’s too early to get rid of them unless you want to dig them out. Bide you time and strike when the iron is hot (or when the soil is warmer). The best time to apply weed killers will be during late May or early June. If you apply it sooner you are wasting time and money.
Another important thing to remember about weed killer is that they are absorbed ONLY through the leaves of the weeds. Because of this, weed killers MUST remain in contact with the leaves of the weeds for a minimum of 24 hours (48 is best) for the weed to absorb enough to be killed. Many who use liquid weed killers will soak and soak an area to be sure they get the weed killer into the soil. Any weed killer that isn’t actually touching the leaves is wasted. Since leaf contact is the name of the game with weed killers, don’t mow the lawn prior to applying weed killer. If you mow, you’re removing the leaves that absorb the weed killer.
Keep an eye on the weather and make sure that you don’t apply weed killer when rain is expected within 48 hours after the application. Even a quick shower is enough to wash the weed killer off the leaves, rendering it ineffective. REMEMBER, PREVENT CRAB-GRASS NOW BUT, WAIT TO WAGE WAR ON THE WEEDS. Thanks for the read.

Mohawk Honda to celebrate the Grand Opening of its new Scotia dealershipMohawk Honda will celebrate the Grand Opening of its new state-of-the-art dealership starting at noon on Saturday, April 23.As part of the ceremony, representatives of Schenectady County Community College will be in attendance for the announcement of a new scholarship established by Mohawk Honda. Built with an investment of over $7 million, the new 41,000+-sq.-ft. Mohawk Honda car dealership at 175 Freemans Bridge Road opened in December 2010. “The April Grand Opening date gives us the time to make sure everything is absolutely perfect,” explained Jeff Haraden, president of Mohawk Honda. “The results of this total renovation of the former Salisbury Chevrolet are amazing. So far, we have hired 12 new employees and our plans call for more hires in 2011, bringing the total work force to over 100 at the Glenville location alone.”“It’s a great tribute to our customers,” said Steve Haraden, vice president of Mohawk Honda. “Because of their loyalty, not only are we celebrating 92 years in busi-ness in Schenectady, but we are able to offer them this new, state-of-the art facility in Glenville.” The company continues to sell and service pre-owned domestic and imported vehicles at its first location on State Street, with shuttle service available between the two sites. The State Street location continues to house the collision repair facilities for the company.The Haradens continued, “We spent a lot of time ensuring that the facility would be energy efficient. EYE ALLERGIES CONTINUEDAs stated in my last article, eye allergies are a reaction to irritants (allergens) such as pollen, mold, dust mites, dander or chlorine. Certain medications and cosmetics can also cause eye allergy symptoms. Our body responds to allergens by releasing chemicals called histamines which in turn produce in ammation.
The common symptoms of eye allergies are the result of this in ammation: red, itchy, burning, tearing and swollen eyes. These symptoms may be accompanied by a runny or itchy nose, sneezing, coughing, or a sinus headache. Many individuals also report blurred vision, or that they feel distracted, unproductive, or tired.
The best defense against eye allergies is rst and foremost to try to avoid contact with the substances that trigger your allergies.
When prevention is not enough, consider over-the-counter or prescription treatments that are recommended by your eye doctor or family practitioner.

Avoiding An Auto Repair Rip-Off ByAvoiding An Auto Repair Rip-Off Bycertain kinds of repair. Here are a few suggestions to avoid an auto repair regret or rip-off.
‘I know a guy...’ This is the best place to start. Talk to your friends, family and coworkers. Which repair shop do they use? How long have they been going
there? Would they recom-mend them? Once you have decided on a shop, contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to fi nd out if any complaints have been fi led against it.
If you are satisfi ed with what you fi nd, take your car in. Be as specifi c as possible when
describing the problem; they can’t help if they don’t know what’s wrong. At this point it is a good idea to ask if the shop’s mechanics are ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifi ed. Keep in mind that mechanics can be ASE certifi ed in many different areas, such as brakes, engines, electrical systems, etc., so if you have a problem with your brakes, a mechanic certifi ed in en-gines may be underqualifi ed to fi x your problem.
Next, make it clear that you want to be contacted B E F O R E ANY WORK B E G I N S . Most shops are good about this, but it never hurts to re-mind them. Also state that if any-thing needs to be replaced, you want the old part. This may stop a rip-off before it starts. A dishonest mechanic is less likely to needlessly replace something if you’re going to see the replaced part.
When you fi nd out the diag-nosis, take notes. Have the mechanic explain every-thing to you in terms you can understand. Ask wheth-er the repairs are necessary or only recommended and
then tell them you’ll get back to them about doing the repair.
Now it’s time to use your best anti-rip-off tool-the Internet. Do some research; use a search engine and fi nd out if what they told you is accurate. You can even fi nd parts prices online and fi g-ure out if they are charging
you fairly (be aware that a markup price is standard business pro-cedure). You could also contact a few other local shops and get their price for doing the same repair.
If your in-v e s t i g a t i o n proves the re-pairs are legit-imate and at a
reasonable price, give them the OK to proceed. When you pick up your car, go over the invoice carefully with them and make sure all charges are explained. Also verify in writing any guarantees that come with their work.
We all want to hire someone we can trust, and most me-chanics are trustworthy. Once you do fi nd ‘your’ mechanic, you’ll also be able to say, ‘I’ve got a guy... .’
