Welcome to Wellington Secondary College, an academic secondary school with a strong tradition of scholarship, commitment to excellence and global citizenship. These philosophies are reflected in our College Motto: Caring, Striving and Learning.

A Secure & Enjoyable TransitionThe focus of Year 7 and 8 is about students making the successful transition to the secondary setting. An outstanding program of support, engagement and academic rigor has been established by the Junior and Wellbeing Teams to ensure that all students feel part of the’ Wellington Way’ and are well equipped to meet the challenges of this new learning environment.Their adjustment to the greater complexity of secondary school is markedly assisted by a specialist transition team and a separate Junior School Centre which includes its own amenities with locker bays and dedicated campus recreation areas.

Junior School: Strong FoundationsThe College emphasis in Years 7 & 8 is on core competencies: Literacy, Numeracy and the integration of Learning Technologies across all areas in the curriculum. The subjects offered provide a solid introduction to a range of areas which are based on the Australian Curriculum. They include English, Mathematics, Humanities, Science, Physical Education and Health, The Arts and Technology. Effective study habits, regular homework and pride in achievement are encouraged, expected and rewarded.

Specialist ProgramsWellington Secondary College offers a range of programs to extend our gifted and talented students as well as those with specific learning needs:• Select Entry High Flyers class at Years 7 to 9 in

Mathematics, English, Humanities and Science.⊲ This program offers the opportunity for

students to sit for financial scholarships and to be part of a learning group that focuses on the development of 21st Century Skills: - Creativity - Critical Thinking - Communication - Collaboration

⊲ Students can have access to teacher mentors to support their particular areas of interest which can be developed over the 3 years of the program. Students will be expected to participate in a range of subject competitions and learn a musical instrument in Junior School.

• Accelerated learning in Mathematics⊲ Selected students have the opportunity to be

accelerated in Mathematics, culminating in the study of Mathematical Methods, Units 1 and 2 in Year 10 and Units 3 and 4 in Year 11

• VCE Advance Placements in Year 10⊲ Approved students have the opportunity to

study a VCE/VET subject in Year 10 in order to maximise their ATAR(Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank)

• Empowering Literacy ⊲ This is an elective designed to enhance literacy

skills across the subject areas and can provide a pathway to VCAL at the senior level

• Numeracy Applications⊲ This is a personalised mathematical course

which focuses on basic concepts and practical skills. Class sizes are reduced to enable more 1:1 support for students

Middle School: Growth and PreparednessYears 9 & 10 are marked by broadening choice and increased self reliance as students grow toward maturity and independence. A solid core curriculum is supported by an elective program and co-curricular activities that recognise the differing needs of students at this stage of their development as well as providing a solid foundation for VCE.

Senior School: Achieving Intended PathwaysInitiative, personal responsibility for learning and a strong sense of commitment to academic achievement is central to life in Senior School (Years 11 & 12). A highly disciplined and collaborative work ethic among staff, students and their families supports each student’s quest for success and rewarding career pathways.

Our broad and engaging VCE curriculum at Wellington is designed to maximise each student’s beyond-school life expectations, so that they may flourish as capable young women and men, confident and assured of their ability to shape their future.

The College is committed to achieving excellence. Both tertiary and vocational pathways are provided through the Victorian Certificate of Education and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning. Every student is capable

of obtaining a successful outcome to their studies with help and careful choice of subjects.

An extensive range of subject offerings caters for a rich diversity of needs which means that Wellington students are more likely to study the subjects needed to achieve their personal career and further educational goals. Specialist programs include Business, Science and Mathematics, however over 35 VCE subjects are offered annually including a strong EAL program.

Senior students enjoy and benefit from a young adult learning environment in the Senior School Centre, which has its own study hall and recreation facilities. They are supported by extensive counselling and tutoring which includes advice on study skills, time management and exam preparation. We are proud of the outstanding results achieved by our students at Wellington Secondary College. They graduate well prepared for entry into the University, TAFE institution or vocation of their choice.

Exciting PathwaysVCE Enhancement subjects, VET Courses and VCAL work placement projects provide many new opportunities for University and TAFE studies and exciting pathways to the future for many of our students.

Information TechnologyThe College has a fully networked wireless environment. Advanced learning technologies are available to teachers and students within every classroom in the school. All students are expected to own their own approved computer device. In order to keep current in the constantly evolving world of computer based technologies, the College annually updates the suite of devices and applications available for classroom use across the campus. Four fully trained on-site technicians support student usage.

Sport and HousesSport is prominent in the life of Wellington Secondary College. A full range of Inter School and House sport provides students with the opportunity to develop personal skills and fitness and to enjoy the benefits of teamwork in a spirit of healthy competition. Many students perform in interschool sports at state level.The school enjoys a robust House Competition. Students are encouraged to pursue their interests in a variety of intra and inter school sports with Basketball, Table Tennis and Soccer being particularly strong.

Beyond the Classroom Co-Curricular ProgramsDevelopment of the whole person is a particular focus of Wellington and is reflected in its variety of cultural, physical and intellectual activities. The College is distinguished by the scope and range of its outstanding co-curricular programs which develop leadership qualities, creativity and character.

School life at Wellington is enriched through participation in co-curricular programs such as sport, music, drama, debating, chess and many other lunchtime clubs and activities which provide students the opportunity to develop skills in areas of talent and passion.

Student Leadership and CitizenshipThe College offers an excellent Student Leadership Program and our student leaders are provided with full training and ongoing mentoring and support. Wellington exposes students to challenges which develop personal and social skills, initiative and self reliance. This is achieved through activities such as a College camping program, the Future Leaders program as part of the Victorian Youth Advance Program, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. An active campus leadership program includes Peer Support, School, House, Music and Form Captains and a Student Representative Council.

MusicWellington has a strong instrumental music program which provides students with opportunities for performance as a member of a music ensemble as well as individual excellence.

Regular musical and theatrical productions involve students at all year levels.

The diversity and talent of our student body is celebrated at our annual Multicultural Concert as well as the Winter and Spring Concerts.

International Student ProgramA strong international perspective enriches the life of Wellington, one which values the harmonious diversity of cultures within the College.For over twenty years, Wellington Secondary College has been an accredited provider of a quality International Student Program (Years 7 to 12), educating up to 90 international students every year from all over the world.

The College is also a specialist provider of Intensive English Language taught in our on-site, accredited English Language Centre.

Wellington students can choose overseas study tours to a range of destinations in Asia, Europe, the Pacific and the Americas. Through the digital classroom, the College encourages student interaction with fellow students and schools from across the world.

Our CollegeThe grounds and facilities at Wellington Secondary College are spacious and modern. The College has recently benefited from an extensive modernisation and our students enjoy attractively landscaped gardens and grounds, ideal for sport and recreation as well as state-of-the-art learning facilities.These facilities include well equipped specialist science laboratories, a Performing Arts Complex, two multi-purpose gymnasiums, a specialist sports hub, a separate Senior School Study Centre and a dedicated Year 7 Centre.

The College is well serviced by public transport to the Waverley area and school charter buses to Mulgrave, North Dandenong, South Springvale, Keysborough and North Noble Park.

Our CommunityStudent learning is enhanced when there is an active and positive relationship between the College and families. Parents, friends and the community are warmly welcomed into the life of Wellington through bodies such as the College Council, the Parents’ Club, the Music Parents and Friends group and the many volunteers who support the school’s canteen, uniform shop and at social functions.
