MAY, 2017
CHANGE THE
WORLD DAY
IS MAY 20!
Change the World Day is
part of a larger UMC
initiative for the May 20-21 weekend, and for Charleston
WUMC, the Church and Society Ministry Team is planning
FIVE service projects for Saturday, May 20: (1) serving lunch
at PADS, (2) a Helping Hands Ministry work day, (3) nursing
home/homebound visits, (4) activities by younger children
and their families to spruce up the exterior of the church,
and (5) a rice/beans packaging project in partnership with
the Wesley Foundation. There will be opportunities to serve
and help for folks all ages and interests. Sign-up sheets will
be available in the sanctuary hallway on Sunday morning
SOON so that you, your family or your class can sign up to
be a part of this amazing opportunity to “Change the World”
in the Charleston area!
CHANGE THE WORLD shirts
can be ordered by stopping by the table
in the hallway in between worship
services during the month of April, or by
clicking on “ORDER YOUR CTW SHIRT!”
on the website to print the order
form. DEADLINE TO ORDER IS MAY 1st. Shirts are $10 each
(all sizes) and we hope all volunteers for Change the World
Day (May 20) will purchase one to wear on that day and
beyond. (You don't have to volunteer to purchase a
shirt!) *Shirts are available in adult and child sizes. The
shirts are 100% preshrunk cotton, and run "true to size”.
We encourage EVERYONE to wear their
Change the World shirts to worship on Sunday, May 21!
Wesley’s Monday afternoon Prayer
Group will be on hiatus this summer.
The group will resume meeting after
the Labor Day holiday. However, our
email prayer chain and Facebook
prayer team are always available for
prayer requests. You can submit
prayers through the church office,
on the Wesley website and via the
Prayer Wall located just outside the
sanctuary. Let US pray for YOU!
HAVE YOU
WALKED THE
LABYRINTH YET?
The chapel labyrinth is finished, and
you are invited to walk it any time
the church building is open. The
southeast (Early Learning Center)
door opens by 7AM and remains
open until 5PM. The west doors
open at 9AM and close at 4PM. We
are considering offering a labyrinth
class during Sunday school time in
the near future. Watch the worship
bulletin, Facebook page and future
newsletters for more information!

THE HELPING
HANDS
MINISTRY
WANTS TO
CHANGE
YOUR WORLD!
The Wesley UMC Helping Hands Ministry will be
working to Change the World of our
homebound and senior members the morning
of Saturday, May 20. Ministry team members
do chores such as cleaning gutters, trimming
bushes, replacing light bulbs, batteries or filters,
and other light home upkeep projects. If you do
not have family members or other helpers to
perform these tasks for you, please use the
comment section of your Making Connections
card to request help. Be sure to include your
name(s), projects to be done, and your address
and phone number so we can send the correct
number of Helping Hands volunteers to provide
this service to you. You can also call or email the
church office, or email Pastor Janice Kahl at
[email protected], or text/call her at
(915)540-2362.
The Month of May is not only teaming with flowers blooming all around, but much will be blooming at Charleston Wesley as well! Sunday, May 14 – Be sure to join us for Mother’s Day. Whether you bring your mom to Wesley to worship or she brings you, we want to honor our moms and the women in our lives who have had significant impact on us.
Saturday, May 20 – Change the World Day May 20 is the day United Methodists all over the nation are moving beyond the walls of the church and into local communities to be a blessing. For the first couple of weeks in May, we will have sign-up sheets in the hallway next to the Information Center. You are encouraged to look at the different areas and sign up to serve in the area that most speaks to you. Buy a Change the World T-shirt online or in the hallway and wear it proudly as we seek to make a difference in our community on that day! Sunday, May 21 – To celebrate the day of service and to honor our graduating seniors, we will have a potluck dinner after second service in the Fellowship Hall. For those who served on Change the World Day, it will be a time to celebrate together. For those who couldn’t serve, it will be an opportunity to talk with those who did, celebrate our graduates, and simply enjoy a time of fellowship. Also on Sunday, May 21 – Rev. Adrian Garcia will be speaking at both services. Adrian is a United Methodist pastor in our conference serving at Peoria First UMC. Adrian works on a daily basis with the Hispanic community in Peoria and knows firsthand what that community is living with on a daily basis. In between services, during the Sunday school time, Adrian will be in the sanctuary for a presentation and Q&A. Don’t miss this great weekend of worship, as we seek to better understand what immigrants in the US experience. Sunday, May 28 is Memorial Day Sunday. Last year, we celebrated by releasing butterflies in memory of someone who has joined the Church Triumphant and to celebrate the hope and promise of the resurrection for each of us! We hope you will join us for this very special weekend.

MAY MISSION PROJECT: OUR CONFERENCE/OUR KIDS
Our May mission project is the “Our Conference/Our Kids” endowment sponsored by the United Methodist Illinois Great Rivers Conference. The 2017 Bishop's Golf Open, was held April 21 near Auburn, Illinois, and was the soft opening for the “Our Conference/Our Kids” endowment. The major kick-off for this fundraiser will be at Annual Conference in June. The plan is to raise $2,500,000 for an endowment that will fund the “spiritual life” programs at our Conference Children's Homes which include: The Baby Fold, Chaddock Children's Home, Cunningham Children's Home, Lessie Bates David Neighborhood House, and the United Methodist Children's Home. If you would like to help with this effort, please make your check to Wesley UMC with Kid's Endowment on the memo line or visit our church website at www.charlestonwesley.org and click on the $ button at the bottom of the page. If you prefer to make a cash donation, there are blue mission offering envelopes in the pew backs. Thank you very much for your support.

NEW WOMEN’S
BIBLE STUDY
A new Beth Moore Bible study for women will
begin Tuesday, May 30, at 9:00 a.m. in the
WUMC parlor. The study, entitled "Entrusted,"
is a study of 2 Timothy. We were never meant
to take this journey of faith alone or in secret.
God has entrusted us with the great and mighty
gift of the gospel, something too precious and
life-giving to keep to ourselves. In this 6-session
Bible study, Beth will encourage you to guard
what God has entrusted to you, further His
kingdom by sharing Christ with others, and pour
into future generations just as Paul once
mentored Timothy. Because in this journey of
joy and hardship, we need each other to stay the
course and live a life of faithfulness. The study
will meet the following Tuesdays: May 30, June
6, June 13, June 27, June 11, and June 18. We
hope you will be able to join us.
GRADUATION
RECOGNITION
Sunday, May 21st will be
the day we recognize and
celebrate our 2017
graduates. If you have
someone in your family that is either graduating
from high school or college, please send an
email to Wesley’s youth director, Ben Pertl at
[email protected] or call the church
office at 217-345-3917 to be sure they are
included. Please give us their name, parents’
name, school graduating from, and the
graduate’s future plans (if applicable).
Love One Another as I Have Loved You . . .
In John 15:12, Jesus says, “This is my
commandment, that you love one another as I
have loved you.” Loving and caring for one
another is not just the pastor’s job—it’s
something Jesus calls us all to do! Stephen
Ministry is a ministry in which people with
special gifts for caring ministry can put those
gifts to use in an organized way, bringing Jesus’
love and care to those who most need it.
If you know someone who is going through a
difficult time, contact Nancy Marlow about
Stephen Ministry; you can reach her in the
church office (217-345-3917) or by e-mail
at [email protected]. Wesley’s
Stephen Ministers are ready to provide focused,
confidential, one-to-one Christian care—to help
that person experience the healing power of
Christ’s love.
Gifts were given to the
Memorial Fund in memory
of Debbie Green,
Joann Sanders and
Rosie McMorris Baker.
