The West Essex Directory is published bi-monthly by E4 Publishing. Our distribution covers most of Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. We deliver to half of each area one month, and the other half of each area the following month (approximately 7,500 households per month, or around 15,000 households in a two month distribution).

Printed on FSC accredited paper. For every tree felled significantly more are planted.

Vegetable based inks are used throughout, which are far more environmentally friendly than oil based inks. Waste paper from the printing and

binding process is recycled and goes back into providing pulp for recycled paper products.

W elcome to the September/October edition of

The West Essex Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory.

We’ve undergone a radical overhaul recently here at Direc-tory Towers. A top consultation firm (a smashing bunch of people, all called Jacintha by coincidence) has been looking at how we operate with a view to major re-branding on a top-to-bottom basis. Their recommendations are just in, and, because we spent several zillion pounds on their services, I feel it only right to share their ideas with our loyal public.

At the heart of it, a need was seen for Continuity on a Real-Time basis. Identity was obviously key in this. Our Core Values were reassessed on a Cross-Platform Model and great value was placed on Inter-personal Interpretation (on an ad hoc basis – obvi-ously) (with ongoing amendments when needed – of course).

The really clever part is that you’d never even know that the consultants had been here at all. They were that good. We hope that you enjoy this edition in its brand new, revolu-tionary, unchanged format.

T here is a county whose coastline is longer than that of Cornwall or any

other county for that matter. There are cliff walks and rugged coves, marshes and mudflats, tales of pirates and Saxons, tall ships, lightships, big ships and little ships, islands estuaries and creeks, pastel beach huts lined up like gum drops by sandy shores, piers, fossils, and traces of every stage of our history. Where, then, is this glorious county? In case you hadn’t guessed, it’s Essex.

Over the next few months (or, to be realistic, years) we can walk together through this scenery. And where should we start? Where, after all, does Essex start?

Well, just about everything (except for Friends repeats on E4) starts and ends somewhere, and Essex starts at Harwich. You could also argue that it ends there, if you happened to be proceeding in an easterly direction from London. And, we should add, if you were walking around Essex in a clockwise sort of a manner, then Harwich might be just about any-where. But it isn’t. It’s there on the map, where Essex starts (or ends). Across the river, Suffolk ends (or starts).

Not famous as a holiday location. Not Cancun. Not really even Marbs. Let’s face it, it’s not even Bognor. But therein lies its charm. I feel awfully out of place on the beaches of Cancun, all sort of pink

and plumpish, and they laugh at me in Marbs for all the wrong reasons. But in Harwich I blend. Just another plumpish pink bloke. Not a tourist gawping. All of which releases me to gawp as a tourist as much as I like. And, believe it or not, there is plenty to gawp at. So come with me on this wild voyage of discovery. To Harwich. Where Essex ends forever. Or starts.

The coast from Harwich heads south and west-wards towards London, with several towns along the way, as though the county were rehearsing its art of seaside resorts before hitting the nail on the head with Southend-on-sea.

Many of the places have a suffix, which all tend to be references to water of some sort or another. Frinton-on-sea and so on. As though the weary traveller arrives and says “Ah – I was kind of won-dering what those wet waves were.”

Harwich, once a major harbour, sits on a crooked finger of coastline, looking across at the massive container ships unloading at Felixstowe rather like an aged grandfather watching his descendants working hard in a field. Great ships, laden with who-knows-what, plough in from the sea, blocking the horizon before mooring alongside lines of cranes that pick their carcasses of their goods.

The town has trails that highlight its maritime history, and although Harwich now has a somewhat unglamorous reputation, it’s easy to carry oneself

back to earlier times, when Harwich was the only safe haven between London and the Humber. The town thrived and, by 1657, was heavily defended with forti-fications and guns.

These days, the military structures lie unused, the threat of invasion from Holland having subsided. The main maritime activity is the ferry to The Hook, which fills the town for brief periods of the day with travellers either com-ing or going – but seldom, sadly, staying. I stayed. The hotel couldn’t understand why, and thought that I must be lost, or mad, or both. But I liked it there, the bustle across the water and the promise of the whole Essex coast stretching into the distance.

One morning, an autumnal mist spread across the estuary so that the distant cranes of Felixstowe loomed like giants. A booming foghorn reverberated in the still air, bouncing and echoing from shore to shore. Out of the mist, as though it was pushing

aside a gossamer curtain, a huge ocean liner heaved its way up the river, towering above our breakfast room so that its passengers could see my fried egg, should they wish. Or else they could admire the view of lovely Harwich as it woke to another day. That’s it. The end. Or the beginning. Depends.

Sue Lavery

HAVE FUN LEARNING TO PLAY BRIDGE Ray Green invites you to join the East London Bridge Club. I decided to join one of Ray’s bridge courses to try it for myself. I know a few people who play bridge and find it a stimulating and sociable game. I had also interviewed Ray for the articles in The Chingford Directory for 2011, 2012 and 2013. The article also appeared in The West Essex Directory in 2012 and 2013.

There were about 12 new players when I joined and Ray started us off with games of mini bridge progressing to bridge. I found the lessons were well planned and challenging and Ray gave us lots of mate-rial to follow up each lesson. It was fun learning with others and there was always plenty of support and encouragement from Ray and the other players. This is what Ray said,

“Bridge is a trick taking game of skill and chance played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at the table.

Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit and a learning process that never ends. It can be exciting, challeng-ing, frustrating but never boring.

It is a social card game that includes strategy, trust and teamwork. You can develop friendships with others who are learning and already playing bridge. It is also a great way to sharpen your memory and exercise the brain.

Once you have learnt the basics of bridge you are able to practice with friends. The only cost is a cou-ple of packs of cards and the tea and biscuits.

From Monday 20th October I shall be giving eve-ning lessons from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. These will be on every Monday except Christmas and bank holidays.

I am offering a 32-lesson course that will cover all aspects of this interesting game and help you to be ready to play in one of the many local bridge clubs.

Each 2-hour lesson including a tea/coffee and bis-cuit break is £10 per person. You only pay for the lessons you attend and will be given the opportunity to cover missed lessons on a later course. On these lessons you will be partnered with another member of the class. You are of course welcome to join with one or more friends and learn in a relaxing, comfort-able home environment.

Later in this course I also offer supervised bridge play. There is a 2 hour supervised play session on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30pm for £5 per person.

For those who wish to improve their bridge play I organise intermediate evening lessons on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 7.30 – 9.30pm.”

If you are thinking of joining Ray’s course and would like to take advantage of the special beginner’s offer send your cheque for £50 with your name, address, home and mobile phone numbers to Ray at the address below. For more details contact Ray on 020 8281 8376 or go to www.eastlondonbridge.co.uk.

Profile: East London Bridge Club

SPECIAL BEGINNER’S OFFER If you wish to pay in advance for the first five lessons of the course, you will be given the course book (retail price £25) free of charge on the first lesson. Payment to arrive before 10th October. If you wish to take advantage of this offer, please send your cheque for £50 to RAY GREEN 22 Horsley Road Chingford London E4 7HX

T hese 3 books are the first instalment in a series of spiritual and philosophical

thoughts of the popular icons of our day. Richard Gere, Bono and Carlos Santana are the first to be published and, in the pipeline are Oprah Winfry, John Lennon and Steve Jobs. Each title covers chapter headings on subjects such as ‘spirituality and purpose’, ‘humanitarianism and obligation’, ‘art and inspiration’ and ‘self discovery and virtue’. Published by Backbeat Books in hardback and Kindle, each provides a short biography of the star, and dozens of quotes on topics such as compassion, happiness, commitment, truth, family, character and reflection. These are delightful keep-sakes which contain deep and wise messages to help us grow and develop on our spiritual path and will motivate and inspire all those who read them. What wonderful gifts to bestow on friends or to keep by the bedside to read each night! Visit: www.backbeatbooks.com
