Presentation Day 2011 This year’s school presentation day will be held on Wednesday 14 December. This will be a time to celebrate together the successes and achievements of not only those students who will receive awards, but the achievements of all students who have worked so wonderfully ensuring that 2011 was not just an outstanding year, but a magnificent one. One filled with exciting achievements in the academic area, in the sporting arena, in the area of the performing arts and in leadership. I would encourage all parents to join us on the day and help to acknowledge and celebrate what was a truly wonderful year. Student Leader Speeches I was very privileged to listen to twenty outstanding Year 5 students make their cases for selection as a captain or prefect in 2012. The quality of the candidates and their presentations was very high. All of these students are already leading by example. Well done. 2012 captains and prefects will be announced at the Primary Presentation Day assembly. Staffing 2012 Planning for classes and staffing for 2012 is well underway. In order to have a better understanding as to what our student numbers will be for next year, we ask that you please notify the school office if your family will not be returning to Queanbeyan West Public School or returning late in 2012. If you know of parents who wish to enrol their child in our amazing school, or have children commencing Kindergarten in 2012, please encourage them to visit the school and pick up an enrolment form and information package, or direct them to the school’s website www.queanbeyaw‐p.schools.nsw.edu.au. Parent Tips Water Pack a water bottle for your child each day and remind them that they can also get water from the taps or bubblers throughout the day.
Encouraging your child to read at home • Be yourself and involve your child in everyday conversations from an early age. • Read aloud to your child. It will help your child to learn the language of books and encourage the enjoyment of books and reading. • Talk about books together ‐ make reading a
shared, enjoyable activity. • See that there is a range of reading material for your child at home, both fiction and non‐fiction.
• Read to your child in your first language ‐ research shows that using your first language will help your child when he or she learns to read English. • Try not to let television intrude on reading time ‐ set aside some uninterrupted time to read with your child. • Listen to your child read every day, even if only for a short time. • Give books as treats and presents. • Discuss the meanings of stories and words. • Join your local library. Borrow books for yourself as well as your child. More tips at www.schools.nsw.edu.au Healthy lunchbox ideas We are all so busy in the lead up to Christmas, but it is still important to provide your child with healthy, nutritious and filling lunches and snacks at school. The School A to Z website has some great quick and easy lunchbox ideas. The site has printable recipes and food tips as well as allergy buster lunches for the most sensitive. And remember as the weather warms up, freeze a water bottle and place in the lunchbox (wrap in a cloth to keep food dry) to keep food at a safe temperature for consumption. Fitness Tips Ideas to Get Your Child Active At Home
Skipping – all you need are ropes of any size
Hopscotch – a little chalk to mark off the squares, a small stone and good balance and you’re off and hopping
Throwing and catching – give a child something that’s round, rolls or bounces, like a ball, and backyard games will take off. One-handed catching, one bounce catching, high balls, rolled balls, consecutive catches – you name it and you can play it
Targets – take a wet tennis ball and some empty drink cans or plastic bottles and your children will have a great time playing a game that is developing their strength and skills. As long as you don’t mind the odd mark on a suitable wall or the garden furniture, the target can be easily set up and the sound of a wet ball on an empty drink can is always enticing
Hide and seek – everyone knows how to play hide and seek. All you need is the ability to count to 100, or near enough and some imaginative hiding spots
Chasing games – you probably invented your own version of this game – there are stacks of options.
Have a great week Vicki Muscat

QUEANBEYAN RELAY FOR LIFE 2012 NEEDS YOUR HELP!
It’s coming to Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan on Saturday 18th – Sunday 19th February 2012 Cancer Council needs your help and support as we motivate thousands of people to walk for 24 hours. Relay For Life is a team event to raise money in the fight against cancer and an opportunity to educate the community about ways to reduce their risk of developing cancer. CANCER CAN AFFECT YOU, your family, friends, employees, customers or business acquaintances. It is estimated that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Cancer Council NSW aims to defeat this horrible disease by investing heavily in cancer research (over $14 million in 2010); providing support, information and advice to cancer patients and their families; promoting cancer prevention messages to the community and advocating for improved cancer services and prevention campaigns on behalf of others. We’ve all been touched by cancer in some way. For more information please contact Natalie Jupe Sponsorship and Fundraising Co-ordinator, Queanbeyan Relay For Life Volunteer Committee: 0419 161 974 or via email: [email protected]
TAKE HOME A BIG BROTHER OR BIG SISTER
Give your children the wonderful opportunity to have an international big brother or big sister
by hosting an exceptional international student arriving in Australia in February 2012 for their 5 or 10 month programs. Our international
students from France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Japan, Scandinavia and the U.S.A will live as a
local, attend a local secondary school, arrive with their own spending money and
comprehensive insurance cover – all arranged by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange.
