o Viscous resistance accounts for >70% of a vessels total resistanceoMore for slow steaming ships

o The biggest component of viscous friction is skin frictiono Skin friction can be reduced by:

1. Reduction of the wetted surface (linear reduction)

2. Speed reduction (quadratic reduction)

3. Improving the interaction between the wetted surface and the fluid (=seawater)

o 1 and 2 are very effective to reduce skin friction but will affect vessel’s operation

o 3 is also very effective and will not affect vessel’s operation.
