Dear Parents/Carers,

Wow, Week 4 already – where has the Term gone?

This week, we had our External School Review. A review officer and two peer Principal panel members from the Department for Education were here on Monday and Tuesday. Over the course of two days, they spoke to many different staff groups, random student groups and parent groups, as well as visited classrooms to elicit information about how well Playford Primary School is tracking and to provide feedback into areas that we can improve. Like all schools, we want to get even better, so that we are providing your children with a high quality education, by high performing teachers and support staff. We should receive a report in a month or so, providing directions for us for the next 3 years. Once we receive this report, it will be published to the school web site for transparency to our whole school community.

We would like to stress however, that if you have feedback, suggestions, or areas in which we can improve, then we encourage you to contact your child’s class teacher (if it pertains to them) or if it’s a bigger, school issue / item, then make a time and come and speak to a member of school leadership. We do not want people to wait for the next External School Review in 3 years’ time to identify any issues or concerns. We are here to help but we can only do that if we are aware of the issues.

Next week, and the following week, we have swimming for Years R-5 students and we know that the students are looking forward to going swimming. We have tightened the supervision requirements this year, around students and changing back into their school uniforms, so please take the time to read these changes in the swimming section of this newsletter. We know that this may be an inconvenience to some, but we would rather inconvenience people and maintain child safety, than have an unknown person have access to our students – your kids. If we could book the Playford Aquadome out in entirety, then we could relax the rules as we would know that all adults inside, are parents / carers or have permission to be there. Unfortunately, we are unable to do that as it’s a public space and therefore have implemented further measures.

We are still seeking any parent volunteers who may be interested in supporting us and the students as traffic monitors. If we get enough support, we would like to have crossing monitors (adults) on Somerset Grove whilst we continue to work with the City of Playford Council. Alternatively, we need some helpers to form a Fundraising Committee. If you are willing, able and want to help make a difference – then please come in and speak to us about becoming a volunteer.

We recently had our Reverse Interviews in the gym for our start of year Acquaintance night. This was something completely different and we would love to hear your thoughts as parents / carers. How did we go? What did we do well? What could we do better? Send us an email at [email protected] and provide us with some feedback, as we would love hear your thoughts.

PLAYFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER ISSUE 02

Given that R-5 swimming is occurring next week and the week after, we need to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. The recent ‘Reverse Interviews’ were great, in that it gave teaching staff the opportunity to meet parents, so that we can put faces to names. Our concern is, that during Swimming week, the Playford Aquadome is open to the general public and therefore, anyone can have access to our students.

As a precautionary, and to ensure the safety of your children, we are asking that you inform the class teacher, if someone else (other than the child’s Parent / Guardian) will be attending the pool, and whether they have permission to assist (younger children) in changing out of wet bathers back into their school uniform. If we do not have consent, via the class teacher that ‘Aunty, Grandma, Family friend’ has your direct permission to assist your child, then we will refuse them entry into the changing area. These people will need to provide identification, to verify who they are. Quite simply, no Identification, no entry. If the class teacher has not met you (as the parent / carer), then you may also be asked to verify your identity via photo ID.

Whilst we acknowledge that this adds another layer of inconvenience, we would rather inconvenience people, and maintain the safety of your children, than be negligent. Your kids are your greatest asset and it is our core business to educate and protect them.

We will have lanyards available to provide parents / carers (people with permission to assist young children change) so that they can be easily identified, and so that we all know, who has been verified as we have a number of classes at any one time and whilst the class teacher may know who you are, other staff may not. These lanyards will need to be returned at the end of each session.

Tuesday 17th March, 7.00pm ~ All welcome.

Vacancies exist for 2020 — 2022. If you would like to know more about how the school operates and have input into the directions and decisions we make for the school, then please consider becoming a member of our Governing Council.

As a member, you attend two evening meetings a term that go for approximately 1.0 – 1.5 hours. If you wish to find out more about the role of the Council, please contact the school and we can give you the name of a council member to speak to.

Governing Council has a number of sub-committees: Finance, Fundraising, Canteen, and OSHC. These provide parents/carers with the opportunity to be involved in a specific area of the school. The committees are very important to our school’s operation. Please consider joining one of these committees. You do not have to be a councillor to be involved. A list of the committees, and their roles, can be obtained from the Front Office.

Nomination forms for Governing Council and Sub-Committees are available on page 5, from the Front Office or we can send one home with your child.

Fees are due by Friday 6th March.

Payments can be made at the Payment Office every morning from 8.30am-9.15am or via our secure Payment Slot in the Front Office any time during office hours. Receipts will be sent home via the class courier bag. Payments can be made over the phone to the school using your credit card (total amount only). If you would like to pay your fees in instalments please contact the Payment Office to complete a Direct Debit instalment plan.

Don’t forget if you are eligible for School Card please lodge your school card form for 2020 as soon as possible. School card applications need to be completed at the beginning of each year. Applications can be completed online at:

Eucalypt West We have been busily getting into our learning and building our unique teams.

It is all happening in Eucalypt West!

In E01, we have been focussing on developing our growth mindset and interoception activities. We have been doing 2 interoception activities every day to help self-regulate.

In E02, we have been practising 2 of our learning assets. First we practising self-managing by listening to a story with a malteaser in our mouths and not eat it! (How many can do that at home?) We also have been developing our communication skills by trying to explain a secret drawing to a partner and they had to try to copy by only listening to the directions.

Students in E03 were developing their collaborative skills by working together to create the longest paper chain.

In E04, we have been blasting off into our launching into learning where we have been focusing on developing our growth mindset by challenging ourselves with new things and never giving up!

RESOURCE CENTRE NEWS

We have had an amazing start to the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year with many children adding to their reading record sheet in the first couple of weeks. Last week we asked children to find a suitable book for their reading ability that has a blue cover! This week, the challenge was to read a book that has only one word in the title. It has certainly made for some interesting choices, finding books that meet our unusual categories. If you’d like to know more about our new-look reading challenge, call in to the library to see the idea our 2019 Civics & Services classes designed.

While classes visit the Resource Centre on a weekly basis, all books are on loan for two weeks with a loan limit of 3. As part of our regular procedure, the first overdue notices have been sent to classes. A blue note will be sent home for books more than a week overdue. We encourage you to help your child take responsibility for looking after their library books. Please do not hesitate to contact the Resource Centre with any concerns about lost or damaged books.

We are open before and after school every day and welcome you to come in and read with your child or help them with their selections.

PLAYFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER ISSUE 02

Dear parents/carers,

Did you know Playford Primary School has been part of Credit Union SA’s School Community Rewards program since 2017.

The program brings a direct financial benefit to our school and is available for you to participate in at any time.

Who is Credit Union SA?

Credit Union SA is South Australia's third largest credit union, with over 50,000 members, and unlike the major banks, Credit Union SA’s profits go back to their members and the communities they live in.

How does School Community Rewards work?

The School Community Rewards program allows you to nominate our school to receive a financial benefit for every product you have with Credit Union SA. So every home loan, car loan, insurance or savings account held by you will generate an ongoing annual benefit for our school.

You’ll get the benefits of Credit Union SA’s great rates and products, while also raising funds for our school without having to donate your time or money!

How will it help our school?

Funds generated through the School Community Rewards program will help us develop and upgrade our facilities, allowing us to further create a fantastic learning environment for all students.

We have already raised over $6,500 through the program and have put the money towards playground equipment, a nature play area and resources. So just imagine what we could achieve with greater involvement from our School community.

Where can I find more information?

To find out how you can participate in School Community Rewards, please contact our representative, Lucy Brooks on 0428 787 230.

All members of the school community must consider their own circumstances and obtain their own advice before joining School Community Rewards. The school takes no responsibility for any advice or product offered by Credit Union SA Ltd. This information is general in nature and doesn’t take into account your own personal circumstances. It is important for you to consider the terms and conditions or Product Disclosure Statement before acquiring any of our products or services to help you decide whether they are suitable for you. Conditions and fees apply. Lending criteria apply to all credit products.
