The Wildcat Crier Musical Issue

April 6, 2017

by Madi Young and Dominic Toncich

When most people think of plays or musicals, they think of a dramatic, semi-serious story, but the musical, The Drowsy

Chaperone, flips the script.

To get some insight on this year’s musical the Wildcat Crier asked some of our star seniors for their opinions on the musical and the characters.

Sarah Pais plays a young woman named Janet van de Graaff. Janet is very classy, but she is also oblivious and absent

-minded. Sarah feels that Janet has a strong, diva-like personality, and she can relate to that.

“Honestly, The Drowsy Chaperone is so funny! Even if you don’t like the music, the whole show is entertaining,” says

Sarah.

Sarah has been in every EA musical ever since her freshman year. She says she “becomes every character she plays.”

Because of this, she has never had stage fright, she just has fun!

Nathon Nicholson plays the narrator in the musical. He relates to the character because he doesn’t like to dance or sing.

Thus, it comes as no surprise that he only decided to join because “he needed something to do after band season.”

Nathon thinks that people should go see the musical because it’s “the funniest musical in EA history.” His favorite

character is Perry Hyman, and he believes that “the man in the chair” is the perfect role for him.

Haylee Harmon plays the role of the titular Drowsy Chaperone. She said, “We’re both quirky and neither of us pay any mind to other’s opinions!” She decided to try out for musical

freshman year after a friend begged her to join. She loved it so much she kept going back.

Haylee agrees that the musical is hysterical and entertaining. In order to memorize her lines, she would sit in front of

her script with her parts covered up and try to complete the scene.

Haylee is also a four year musical veteran. When asked how she copes with stage fright she responded “I guess I just

power through it.”

Matt Sanchez plays Robert in the musical. Matt said that ,“Robert is very happy and outgoing.

He’s very genuine and optimistic, which is a lot like how I act.”

Matt also agrees that the musical is “funny, entertaining and it will make you feel something.”

When asked how hard it was to perform in his costume Matt said, “Roller skating blind-folded isn’t

easy. This should be interesting.” The Drowsy Chaperone comes to EA on April 6, 7, and 8, so get up and go see it!

Why you should be in this picture

by Sarah Pais

As you walk down the halls, you may be hearing a lot of talk about musical and not even think about what goes on behind

the scenes. Through my experiences in cast for the past four years, I have discovered what really happens.

My freshman year, I played “Passenger 2” in Anything Goes. I was involved to the extent to I would go to the rehearsals I

had to and leave when rehearsal was over. Although I was not very involved, I began to establish friendships with my fellow

cast members.

Moving into my sophomore year, I earned the part of “Uzo” in Godspell. Although my responsibilities remained almost

the same other than some added rehearsals, my relationships with the cast grew. Contrary to the previous year, Godspell was

a very emotional show. There was a scene where the character of “Jesus” told us He was leaving. As a group of about 25 ac-

tors make themselves so vulnerable and open to the audience in a moment of so much sadness, you can feel something on-

stage that is almost impossible to describe.

During my junior year I was casted as Fiona MacLaren in Brigadoon. This is when my responsibilities sky rocketed. I

started staying later and helping out behind the scenes. The more involved I got, the more I appreciated all that Mrs. Rosco

does. Not only is she the director, but she helps with choreography, costumes, set design, and pretty much anything else you

can think of.

This year, I will be playing Janet van de Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone. If anything, in comparison to last year, the time

I put into the production has only grown. I have found myself being more involved in the behind the scenes issues. Obvious-

ly, the more you work with people, the better you know them. I have been blessed to have worked with such amazing people

such as our set designer, choreographer, costumer, etc. It is incredible how people from such different backgrounds with com-

pletely different roles in a production can come together and make a show come to life onstage.

With that being said, everything is worth it in the end. It is a feeling that cannot be described, but every night, when you go

out onstage, you are able to forget about everything and live through your character. You get to think through a different per-

spective, figure out what would bother him/her, and what makes him/her happy.

East High vs. EA—Wildcats have more in common than just a mascot. Find out what HSM star your personality matches!

Pisces: You’re just like Kelsi Nielsen! You’re a very talented, creative, and you have a strong

passion for music. This may be your way of expressing yourself since you can be quite an introvert.

You’re shy and forgiving, which isn’t bad, but try sticking up for yourself at times. Aries: Your personality matches directly with the diva Sharpay Evans. You know exactly

what you want in life and won’t let anything or anyone in the way of it. You can be bossy, and

you’re totally a drama queen. You’re very popular, but with your deceiving ways, this can make people not like you.

Taurus: You might want to star t calling yourself Chad Danfor th! You’r e a fr iendly person,

athletic, loyal, and very overprotective about your friends. You can be stubborn at times though, and should work on adapting to change. Things aren’t going to always be what you’re used to. And

there’s nothing wrong with change, especially if it’s a positive one.

Aquarius: You’re Ms. Gabr iella Montez! You’re kind, calm, enjoy helping others, and easily

make friends with people. You love to sing, you’re shy, and you’re actually a geek! Though, one thing Geminis hate is when promises are broken.

Capricorn: You’r e the famous Troy Bolton! You’re the most popular , charming, romantic,

and multi-talented person. You worry way too much about what others might think, though. You’re great at almost anything and shouldn’t be afraid to show it.

Scorpio: Like Ryan Evans, you’re energetic, determined, and passionate. You’re such a fash-

ion icon and sometimes can be witty. You should work on being a better friend, though. You try to do the right thing, but you don’t always do what’s best.

Leo: Mar tha Cox is a fun, exciting, and cool person. Star ting to relate? That’s because your

personality is just like hers! You love hip hop, dancing, hanging out with friends, and you’re also

very smart. It probably wouldn’t be a surprise if you decided to join a cheer or dance team. Virgo: You’r e personality matches with Zeke Baylor . You’re a very secretive person, when

you shouldn’t be, because most of your secrets are actually pretty great things. Don’t be afraid to

open up to people about the real you. You’re a great person, so if they don’t accept that, let it go. Sagittarius: You’re kind, car ing, sweet, and want what’s best for the people around you, ex-

actly like Gabriella’s mom. You enjoy traveling and you’re a very accepting person.

Cancer: Just like Mr. Bolton, you’re a pr etty cool person, but always on top of your game.

You believe that your high school life is based on how your future should be, which means there is no time for distractions.

Libra: You’r e the dr ama teacher Ms. Darbus! You’re passionate about the things you enjoy.

You’re talkative, supportive, and known for giving credit when it’s due. Gemini: You’re awesome, very exciting, and a fun person. Your personality matches Skater

Dude #1! You enjoy being active and being around friends.
