What is a Learning Menu ?

Empowering students through CHOICE while ensuring adherence to

important LEARNING GOALS.

A type of learning that provides a “menu” of activities-some that all

students must do, and some that allow students choices.

Ensures that each learner focuses on knowledge, understanding and

skills designated as essential.

27

Choice Board -MATHS

SCIENCE

Assessments :- 4 Formative and 2 Summative assessments over three terms

Term 1:- 1 formative and 1 summative

Term 2:- 2 formative ( Year 9 will have summative assessments in Eng/Math/Science)

Term3:- 1 formative and 1 summative

Formative assessment :- is ongoing , based on day to day classroom practice, home

learning, projects given during the holidays, where both teacher and student use

feedback to improve learning and identifying what the next steps should be. This helps

us to form groups of children who are given specific support.

Summative assessment – end of unit, end of term, end of year. It is to measure the

level of success that a student has obtained and to evaluate student’s learning at the

end of the term.

This comprehensive assessment programme helps in obtaining a clear picture of where

a student is relative to learning targets. The more we know about individual students as

they engage in the learning process, the better we can support to ensure that all

students continue to achieve and move forward in their learning.

34

Marking and Reporting

Formative:- Peer and Self Marking

Diagnostic Marking

Target setting

Summative:- End of unit tests, termly assessments and end of year exams.

These are marked according to National Curriculum level

descriptors, IGCSE grade bands for year 9 English and Maths.

International Benchmark Assessment: Progress Tests in English, Maths and

Science for years 7, 8 and 9. and CAT4 for years 8 and 9.

Tracking and recording data – Students’ progress is tracked and monitored regularly.

Underachieving students are identified and offered support.

Teacher marking is done in green ink-once a week, peer marking in blue and self in

pencil as and when in the class.

Report:- Three reports, one per term.
